Best Restaurants in the Texas Hill Country | Eater Austin

"Deep in the heart of Texas, you can have a taste of Thailand. Located on the Texas wine route 290 in Stonewall, Texas, Hye Thai fires up the wok to cook some of the best pad Thai in the state. Chile garlic udon, curry fried rice, green curry, stir-fries, and tom kha gai round out the Southeast Asian dishes. Housed inside a black and white home with a matching interior, Hye Thai features colorful plates loaded with umami and signature Thai sauces balanced out with fresh rice noodles or rice. Dining inside offers a sense of intimacy as the smaller interior has a select few tables, but the patio brings more of that casual party atmosphere." - Deven Wilson

Best Restaurants and Wineries in Stonewall, Texas | Eater Austin

"Despite the name, this Thai restaurant is actually in Stonewall, but also serves up really fantastic Southeast Asian food (which happens to pair well with white wines). There’s the usual suspects — noodles, curries, larb, crispy fried chicken, and papaya salad. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

My husband and I came after a long day in the sun swimming. I was worried that I would be under-dressed, but it was pretty casual, thank goodness. The food was so good and I’ve never had Thai food this fresh with a different range of spice and tangs. The tilapia was a bit salty, but spiced really well. We are huge Thai food enthusiasts, and my husband was so pleased and excited about the flavors and presentation, that when the chef came out to greet us mid-meal, he had to thank him and give him his props! Well done!

Google
The food was delicious. I ordered the Udon with Crab and Shrimp, Wings and Firecracker Shrimp. The service was impeccable. Hannah did a great job tending to our table. Loved the atmosphere! We chose to sit outside for an early dinner. It was shaded, breezy and offered great live music. Highly recommend. Perfect location, food and ambiance to finish your day in the Hill Country after Wine tasting and touring the vineyards.

Google
Food was excellent and I would highly recommend. Nice atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating options. They have 5 levels of spice, I like spicy but was warned that they do not mess around and choose level 2. It was plenty warm while still enjoying the flavors.

Google
If I could give 0 stars, I would. This was the most disgusting Thai food I’ve ever tasted in my life. Everything was either burnt, ridiculously salty, or just plain nasty. It felt like they dumped the food in salt and forgot it was meant for humans. To make it worse, the waiters were insanely rude and acted like they were doing us a favor by even being there. We were starving and ended up with this garbage—honestly, it felt more like a punishment than a meal. Never coming back and wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Google
We stopped here on our way to San Antonio and the food is truly amazing, the fried brussel sprouts were soooo good (a must get) and the banh mi bowl was incredibile and tasted really fresh. The owners were lovely and super welcoming, overall amazing experience here and would definitely recommend!

Google
Wonderful ambiance with live music that added to the experience. The service was quick, and every dish we tried tasted fresh and full of flavor! Would love to come back again when in the area.

Google
An absolute treat!! You won’t regret going, the food is amazingly delicious!! Our waitress Hannah was awesome, her attentiveness was top tier!!!! I enjoyed the Cucumber Salad as an appetizer and the Fried Chicken Bowl for my entree, the wings were awesome too!!! I don’t normally enjoy being on the patio, but the experience was so serene and the live music was relaxing and a nice treat!! The owner greeted us and made sure we were totally satisfied. Kudos to Hye Thai owner and staff!!!! I’ll definitely be back!!!!

Google
This restaurant far exceeded our expectations. Having come from the east coast, we have really great Thai food there and wasn't expecting Thai food in a small Texas town to come close to comparing. But they sure impressed! I had their Pad Thai, and enjoyed it very much! It's clear they make their own sauce and put a lot of care into making a delicious dish. My husband had the green curry and that was also quite delicious. Plus, they make their own Thai Tea in-house, pour a generous size glass, and give refills! I was not expecting that since I'm used to having to savor a small glass because other places charge for a second glass. Their staff is attentive and super friendly. We will DEFINITELY be coming back next time we visit!

Yelp
My wife and I finished a tasting experience at a nearby winery and were looking for some lunch nearby. Hye Thai was at the top of the list! Off the bat, in my personal experience, the ratings and reviews were very correct!!! If you're in the area make the stop and enjoy some delicious Thai food!! The location of the restaurant is right off the road between Johnson City and Fredericksburg--the restaurant itself was really nice inside and out, giving off the traditional "Hill Country" vibe. Once you enter the smell of Thai food fills the room (delicious). They have a good amount of tables inside, probably 10 or so, with some outdoor seating. The service was prompt--we were seated right away and orders were taken very quickly. I ordered the Crispy Fried Chicken Bowl: Fried Marinated Chicken over rice, greens, house pickled vegetables with fresh herbs. It came with a chili aioli on the side. It was a good portion of food and everything tasted SO FRESH. The fried chicken was not overly bread-y and wasn't super salty or greasy in any way. It was moist and actually soft. The mixture of the aioli with the rice and greens provided a good and fresh balance with the fried chicken. The aioli was creamy and had a small kick and enhanced the flavor of everything else! It was a perfect combination and although eating the whole bowl, I don't leave feeling overly full or anything. I highly recommend it. Hye Thai is a wonderful gem in the area and we will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
Our first time after hearing great reviews from our friends. Went for date night. It has the potential to be a romantic spot, but the large party was feeling no pain so will remember that if we need a quiet place to talk. The food was incredible! Huge portions are an understatement. I had green curry, the veggies were legit and fresh. Spice level was spot on. Wait staff was attentive and friendly. Would definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
It's SPICY! After an afternoon of wine tasting nearby, we wanted to grab a bite somewhere local before heading back to Austin and Hye Thai caught our eye! There's plenty of parking, there are other businesses next to it and it's hard to miss off the road. My go-to Thai dish is a Chicken Pad Thai so I went with that and requested it medium on the spice level. UM..that wasn't medium, that was more like hot for me, but man it was good! The noodles were flavorful so was that CHICKEN which you never know sometimes, it was just wow, spicy, juicy, and not dry! You can crank it up to a 6 level heat so heads up there. I did notice that the dish had a lot of grilled/sautéed onion which I personally am just not a huge fan of. The space has about 9-10 tables indoor and some seating outdoors. Service was okay as well. Lovely spot to dine at if you don't want the typical burgers/pizza/bbq around the hill country! Will come back and scale back on the spice level.

Yelp
I made reservations for @covingtoncellars last Sunday and was looking for a place to have lunch. @hyethaitx is close by so we thought to have lunch before wine tasting. @hyethaitx is family-owned and run by John, his wife, and his son as the chef. They started in 2019 and recently moved to their Stonewall location. Dad had Lemonade, Hubby had Green Tea, and I had Happy Dad Pineapple Seltzer. We started with the Fried Spring Rolls and Papaya Salad. We had Crispy Fried Chicken, Crying Tiger, and Pad Thai with shrimp. Everything was very flavorful and tasty except the Crying Tiger meat was a bit chewy. This was a gem of a find in the area. There was so much food, we had leftovers. If you're in the Hye, Stonewall, or Fredericksburg areas, definitely stop by.

Yelp
We were in the area for the 2024 eclipse, and though we ate a number of tasty things on the trip, Hye Thai served up the best meals we had in Texas. I'm from the SF Bay Area and have spent time in Thailand, so I feel lucky to have sampled a lot of good Thai food in my day. With that backdrop, Hye Thai is a truly excellent Thai spot. The Crying Tiger was the best piece of meat I ate during our whole BBQ-and-TexMex fueled journey (and that dipping sauce was incredible). Those crispy, saucy Brussels sprouts are something else - we bought it twice! We also loved the pork larb, Thai fried rice, green curry, udon noodles, fresh salad rolls, grilled shrimp skewers - basically everything we tried was a banger. If you're passing through Texas Hill Country, make sure to visit this lovely spot for flavorful eats.

Yelp
I am a huge Thai food fan and I was hoping this place in Hye would be good. Unfortunately, I left very disappointed. The staff was friendly and the service was fast but the food was very disappointing. The fresh tofu spring rolls were dripping because of the picked carrots and radish. The dipping sauce was not very good but was needed since the spring rolls themselves were bland. The chicken pad thai was not edible. It was extremely salty and there were only a few pieces of chicken. The noodles were cooked well but I don't know how anyone could eat the dish when it is as salty as it is. They may have other dishes that are better but based on this experience, I would not go back.

Yelp
I tried the stir fry with crispy fried chicken at Hye Thai and it was really good. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the vegetables were fresh and flavorful. The portion size was generous and left me feeling satisfied. The customer service was great - the staff were friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Overall, I highly recommend Hye Thai for delicious Thai cuisine and excellent service. I will definitely be returning. Also, the brussels sprouts were absolutely amazing and the presentation and delivery of the food was stunning as well.
google avatar

Lexi H.

Yelp
We came here after our wine tasting in Fredericksburg after our wine host recommended it. I'm not a big Thai person but my main dish - the Crying Tiger - was great! We got the cucumber salad, which wasn't my favorite. I love a Japanese cucumber salad that's sesame and spicy vs this one was sweeter. My mom and sister shared the stir fry with chicken

Yelp
Incredible cuisine. This restaurant opened up after a successful food truck run and it's clear why. The brussel sprouts and larb are fantastic (and sizeable) appetizers. The curry fried rice and chili garlic udon were flavorful hits. For the spice lovers a 2 or 3 is really solid, and even a 1 has a good heat to it.

Jaycee N.

Yelp
I work at one of the local wineries and I've been scoping the scene out for good food spots to get lunch at. I love Thai food and this is definitely going on my list of places to hit up in the area. The service was fast and they were super friendly!
google avatar

Yelp
Been going to Hye Thai since it was in a small track at Hye Cider. Came by for lunch today while in town. Ordered the chili garlic udon with a double order of fried chicken for my protein. The amount of food that came out was impressive.. The spice was perfect, the fried chicken was some of the crispiest and most flavorful fried chicken that I've ever had. Everything was fantastic. You wouldn't expect excellent Thai food in this area of Texas but it really is great cuisine.
google avatar

Kent K.

Yelp
What a gem on the wine road!! Friendly service, tasty offerings...I can't wait to come back. BTW - the house made chili crisp and crispy onions are a tell-tale sign of a chef driven menu.
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
We started out with the fresh spring rolls with added shrimp. They were thick and fresh. I loved the pickled carrot flavor. Very nice fusion. We asked for Saracha on the side.!nice homemade peanut sauce. I had the Banh Mi salad with pork. Nice portion size and fresh vegetables. The pork was cooked to mere perfection! There was a salad drizzle on top. A nice mint flavor to n the background and spinach with rice. Nice size portion. My hubby had the Green curry rice with fish and a fried egg on top. I had a bite and I have to say it was a nice flavor. The right amount of curry and green onion. Nice service but it was a little nickel and dime for the sides. I get it it's a business. We still enjoyed it. They do not serve and alcohol. FYI. We'll be back.

Yelp
What a GEM!!!!!!! My husband and I were at a winery when trying to decide where to eat. This place showed up and certainly looked popular. Thai in Hye we thought? Why not! This place was GREAT! The menu is not over loaded with items. It is perfect! Chef John is GOOD!!!!! The perfect Thai options made your way. The food is tasteful and delicious!!!!! The portions are generous! The service is amazing! They have indoor and outdoor dinning. They serve you on real plates and nice silverware with good napkins. No plastic anything and hard to open packets. It is very clean. We look forward to going back and sharing it with our friends.

Yelp
Great Thai inspired Texan food!! Pick up or dine in option. High quality ingredients and awesome customer service in the middle of Hill Country!

Yelp
Ok I'll be the first to say that as soon as walked in and didn't see any Thai or Asian looking people at the register I was skeptical if the food was going to be good or not. Well I'm happy to report I was so wrong. The food although not authentically Thai, had inspired Thai flavors and was a fusion. Everything we ordered was delicious and I wish I didn't live so far away because I would definitely make this a regular spot.

Dora V.

Yelp
Alrighty then we were coming from Fredericksburg to Stonewall and my GPS said take a left on RR 1623. It should be reading RR 1623 N. Which We had to call the restaurant itself to get directions since we are not locals. We tried several different things on the menu including the fried chicken, the papaya salad, spring rolls, and beef and broccoli. We love the chicken and the spring rolls. Only two of us like the papaya salad, which is very sour which was delicious. The beef and broccoli the beef was pretty tough . The flavors were great and the service was excellent. I would like to go back my sister-in-law not so much. We did order one of the soups to go, but they were unable to come up with the ingredients or something. We don't know the result of that just that we did not get the soup.

Doris H.

Yelp
Hye Thai is an amazing gem nestled conveniently along the main road of the Texas wine trail. The food is so authentic and flavorful. You will be amazed to find out that the chef is not Thai but lived in Thailand to train. His culinary knowledge and skills really shine through each dish. Love it here.
google avatar

Jared E.

Yelp
We stopped in today after doing some wine tasting nearby. THE WORST THAI FOOD WE HAVE EVER HAD! We had the "fresh" spring rolls, Pad Thai and Green Curry - we regularly eat Thai food and thought these would be safe options, even in rural Texas. Wrong! We could not finish a single dish and we were all sick afterwards. Do not stop here! Terrible food and mediocre service!
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
Great Thai food in Hye! Who woulda thought, but I'm a believer! Spring Rolls were great too!
google avatar

Brandie S.

Yelp
Great food! Fresh and yummy friendly owners too! We love having a Thai restaurant in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
Always great food. It's nice to see them in a brick and mortar. I haven't had anything on the menu I wouldn't order again. Good, fresh, food.
google avatar

jen m.

Yelp
Great food (we had brussels sprouts, pork spring roll, pad thai and green curry), friendly and prompt service. We will be back next time we're in the area!
google avatar

Marisa P.

Yelp
What thai food in the middle of the hill country? Yaaassss! I tried the pad thai with tofu on level 2 and it was spicy goodness. If you don't like spicy I would definitely let them know. Tons of curries and apps, a great stop along the wine trail.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
Food here is decent. Ambiance is okay. Service is sufficient. I got the chicken pad Thai which was simply OK. I would go somewhere else next time.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Loved the food. They are located next to Chocolates El Rey and will be moving in to their own physical building there soon. Super friendly servers delivered our food to to our shaded table. Loved the Shrimp Spring Rolls- they tasted super fresh with a slightly sweet twang. Didn't like the curry flavored peanut sauce though. The Green Curry Tofu with jasmine rice had super complex flavors: the lime, lemongrass, and coconut milk melded well together. Our favorite by far was the Shrimp Pad Thai. Amazing noodles and flavoring. Order 1-2 to go for a late night snack like we did or for the road.
google avatar

Kasbah N.

Yelp
Spring rolls collapsed and could not be eaten- The Udon noodles were so hot and spicy could not be eaten even though we ordered #1 spicy out of 5 !. Small portions, expensive pricing.

Maria Z.

Yelp
Customer service, amazing!!! Atmosphere, great! Food, fantastic!!! Highly recommend this place!!
google avatar

Deb Y.

Yelp
We decided to see if Hye Thai has changed any. Open mind. Boy, were we surprised! We ordered Pad The with pineapple, Green Curry, and Larb gai. The Pad Thai had plenty of sauce. Larb Gai was seasoned perfectly and the Green Curry did the sneak up on ya thing that is so good. Be careful about how spicey you order your food because they really know how to make it spicy. In other words, trust the spicey chart cause they mean it. So yes, Hye Thai has improved immensely since we first ate there. We will definitely go back and I recommend it.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Great Food. Fun family owned restaurant Awesome atmosphere Fun company. Give it a try the go get Ice Cream next door
google avatar

Pam M.

Yelp
What a surprise !!!!! Excellent service and the food was off the charts - compliments to the chef- plan on bringing friends all the way from Wimberley to to enjoy
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
As an Asian American family, we 100% recommend Hye Thai! We were driving through on a little excursion in Fredericksburg and needed to grab lunch. Noticed this 5-star restaurant... and voila! I might dare say -- best Thai food we've had in Texas, or even the entire USA! We got the chicken satay, fried chicken, spring rolls, and green curry. Food was excellent and service was amazing! Come give it a try!!!

Mallory T.

Yelp
This was really a substandard meal. Curry lacked flavor and the chicken in the Phad Thai was rubbery. We are big fans of this kind of food and have eaten at many excellent Thai restaurants, even in Thailand. This restaurant was not good by any measure. We rarely give bad reviews, but hopefully this review will provide some useful feedback to the owners and kitchen staff.
google avatar

Alexandra W.

Yelp
I had the special chili udon noodle with chicken and it was phenomenal. The owner and server were both incredibly friendly and you could tell they were living their passion. Honestly this rivals or may be better than Thai food in Austin at its best. Keep it up!

Leslie S.

Yelp
I went TWICE last weekend and I'll definitely be back! We had the chili udon noodles, curry fried rice with fried chicken, Brussels sprouts, spring rolls, the shrimp roll, and green curry. Everything was amazing! The portion sizes are generous and the flavor is on point. I was told that starting at level 4 they add habaneros. A level 5 is double a level 4 and a level 6 is double a level 5! The level 3 udon was spicier that the level 3 curry. I'll probably do a level 4 next time. I'm already craving it again and it's only been a week!
google avatar

Me M.

Yelp
Good food, you can adjust the spiciness to your taste, reasonable prices, big portions, nice people running the business.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is worth your visit! We went here for lunch and it was not packed (fortunately). It is our first time to visit this restaurant that have inside and outside seating. A lady who was assisting all orders were patient and nice to get everyone's order. The place was so simple, they use mostly natural lights and they are connected to a small convenience store (gas station store alike). The inside sitting was spacious and can surely cater groups of people (dine in). While we decided to eat outside where they have long table and chairs ready. We ordered "Crying Tiger" and "Fried Pork Spring Rolls" and it was DELICIOUS! The herbs, condiments, marination and combination of these foods was perfect for our taste. The tenderness of the meat was really on par, I am kind of sensitive with meat as I do have braces and it is a struggle to chew. But this meat was really good and tender. I would love to go back to have the same order (I miss the taste of it) and will surely order some of the menu. For more reviews, please visit @roadtwoadventure!

Min P.

Yelp
Very generous portion sizes. The green papaya salad was completely soaked in (too much) fish sauce. Pad thai was okay, but slightly too sweet. Stir fry was okay, a lot more vegetables than meat. Ambiance was good, service was just so-so. When we feedback about the green papaya salad nothing was done. (But tbh we didnt expect a new dish either, just wanted to give some feedback.)

Vincent W.

Yelp
Quite delicious Thai food was our experience. Legit Thai food (been to Thailand several times) but they moderate the spice level to your liking. The staff were OUTSTANDING in every single regard. We will return.
google avatar

Carey B.

Yelp
Great experience and food. Loved the patio seating and service was perfect. We will visit again. I have been known to choose ambience over food and here both are great.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Drove out to a nice winery we hadn't tried and stopped in Hye Thai for lunch today. It was very good. You could tell it is all fresh and made to order. Highly recommend and wish we lived closer.

Michael H.

Yelp
A Texas Thai experience. Good portion sizes. Unpretentious and small family run. Almost everything is gluten free! A gem in the hill country. Check it out!
google avatar

Mariah F.

Yelp
I got the tofu pad Thai and it was ok. The tofu as well as the noodles seemed burnt and that was the main flavor with the underlying typical pad Thai flavor coming through just a little. The tofu was hard I wouldn't recommend getting that as your option. I haven't tried anything else here, but I probably won't be back, which is unfortunate given I was extremely excited to try this place out
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
It was a bit crowded when we were there, but our food came out promptly. By the time they came around to ask if it was okay though it was too late to do anything about it. I ordered a level 3 on the heat scale but it was waaayyyy to hot. My husband got the level 4 and he was okay with his. Mine seemed about like his dish, perhaps they were cooked together. If we go back I will only go up to the level 2 or medium.
google avatar

Kat J.

Yelp
Great food! Will be back! Food was fresh and delicious. The price was affordable. We have needed good food like this.
google avatar

Derek B.

Yelp
New location and same great food!! Newly opened, so the inside is still under construction so to speak but looks so awesome. Crying tiger will come back too. In the meantime, I highly recommend the curry fried rice or the pad Thai (but really we have not had a bad thing from here) so happy to see this place grow!

Lindsey K.

Yelp
We've eaten at Hye Thai all three times we've visited Stonewall / Fredericksburg over the last three years. The food is delicious and the portions are huge (good for after a long day of wineries!). We've tried the fried rice, the curry, and the pad Thai. We've also had several of the apps. They've all been great. It's located right off the main strip and is easy to take to-go, or they have ample space inside and out for dining in if you prefer. It's an order-at-the-counter spot. Highly recommend Hye Thai! Plus, get some cooling gelato from the place just next door after your meal. Nom!
google avatar

Jenn D.

Yelp
So good! Definitely try the brussels sprouts. They have a new recipe with lemongrass that's soooo good. Everything is great, but these were the star.
google avatar

Anita C.

Yelp
This rating is ONLY for the food. The food is good but not quite authentic Thai. The Banh Mi bowl was great but doesn't taste like Banh Mi. I would go back for the flavors. I would NOT go back purely because of the woman who works out front. She does not read social cues very well. She over talks and kept trying to sell us more shit when we kept trying to finish ordering, pay, and sit down as soon as possible. When my bf tried to ask for more soy sauce she said "what do you want?" He said "soy sauce." "Didn't he already give you some?" She also tried to get us to move the trailer and wouldn't drop it when we only planned to be there for a few minutes. It's part of a convenient store with plastic tables, so we weren't planning on hanging out and having a romantic meal.

V G.

Yelp
We were looking for something different to eat / lighter fare. Hye Thai hit the spot. Service: We were greeted and informed of how to order. They were open on a Sunday! Located east of Stonewall, Texas and west of Hye, Texas. (Wine country in Texas- Fredericksburg to Johnson City) The wait staff did check on us. Ambiance: Clean - New place Low playing music Inside/Outside eating (Too hot, 101, so we ate inside) Inside does have 8 tables and 4 bar stools. Small but perfectly quaint. Food: Fried Chicken Bowl. The chicken was cooked perfectly/w-an amazing crunch. The white rice-sticky! Just the way I like it. Lettuce-pickled veggie (radish/carrots) YUM! The sauce was a combination of great flavors. Oooh, with a bit of spice. My husband had the stir fry and said it was delish, too! Wish I had a picture, but I ate it all! Stop in and give this place a try-we will be back.
