"Hymie’s is preparing start-to-finish Passover meals that comes with soup, matzo, appetizers, entrees, sides, and cake. The menu at the Merion deli includes gefilte fish, brisket, kugel, haroset, potato pancakes, and more. It’s $26.95 per person with a five-person minimum, but you can always freeze leftovers if you don’t have five people this year. Order by April 15 for pickup on April 22 or 23. A la carte delivery from Caviar and DoorDash is also available." - Ernest Owens, Eater Staff

"Hymie’s might be the area’s most well-known Jewish deli. Since 1938, Main Liners have flocked to the New York-style eatery for all-day breakfast, kippered salmon, hot sandwiches, matzo ball soup, and baked treats like black and white cookies and hamantaschen." - Sarah Maiellano

All the locals told us this is a do-not-miss place for their NYC-style deli sandwiches, wow, they were right! One of the best corned beef and pastrami sandwiches around! Plus, they offer a free pickle station. Kim, our server, was one of the best, friendly, funny, and wittiest. Quantity & quality of the food, excellent service, all made it one of the best value places for a casual dining experience. Will go again when in that part of Philadelphia. Oh, their cakes are a must-have too! Reminder, each slice was enough to feed the four of us.

Hymie’s played a special role in my life and this is where I met my best friend for life Paul, This was one of my first jobs in the early 80s and I would switch back back-and-forth to their other store city line deli, for the first couple of years as a teenager. And from time to time, I would come back to pick up work to earn extra money to fill gaps , and they were always welcoming. Sam Barson was the owner at the time, I learned many great work ethic skills from him along with the deli manager at that time Ivan, Sam’s son Louis took over the operation years later and has done an incredible job taking this establishment to a different level with the same great style deli food and with a lot of new added menu items. I came here looking to revisit where my cooking career started and also some vegan options while they don’t have a vegan section they have an açai bowl, salad section , an impossible burger, and many items can be made vegan. When I entered the store I was immediately greeted and immediately seated. One of the many things that are special about a place like Hymies is the service is second to none and the servers are always accommodating and present. I ordered a everything bagel with a side of lettuce, tomato, green pepper and onion and black olives kind of a build your own sandwich with a side of olive oil it’s made for the perfect vegan treat. The bagel huge fresh and scooped and grilled like I asked and was done perfectly. Served with the freshest of tomatoes, lettuce, and onion you can ask for you’ll see in the pictures. It was kind of fun to build and this was so delicious. It’d be nice to see a small vegan section or maybe a menu insert, it’s very simple to do with the ingredients they already have on the menu , Just add a little bit of tofu, tempeh, edamame and seitan, with a few tweaks, you have a vegan menu, it’s that simple. If that ever happens, I’ll be the first one there . I find that a lot of the vegan products have a nice shelf life that being said most vegans know when you go to a place we look at the menu ahead of time and if it’s not vegan, We are able to break the menu down and make our own dishes as long as the restaurant is willing to and I find that most are. Great memories here I highly recommend this if you’re looking for old school delicious giant sandwiches done perfectly and of course their deli is at the top of their game. Thank you too Louis for doing such a fantastic job. Keeping this suburban legend alive!

Google
It's been a staple for 70+ years for a reason. Whether you choose takeout, dine in or catering, they are one of the best delicatessens in the Philly-suburb area. Featured here is the 'best of both worlds' Ruben (pastrami and corned beef) and the 'yelby' (hot brisket French dip). Plus the whitefish salad is amazing (no picture, but trust me), you won't be disappointed!

Google
Always great. Every time we are on the main line we go and have a wonderful experience. Don’t forget to bring home some sweet treats on the way out, especially the black & white cookies. (No time to take a picture of the cookie because we ate it right away)

Incredible authentic deli food. Really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu

Visiting relatives in Malvern, five of us went to Hymie's as our family was told great things about the restaurant. The wait wasn't long and the waiting area was small, but comfortable. The staff were efficient and friendly. We enjoyed our lunch. For appetizers we had a knish, latkes, and two matzoh ball soups. For the main event we ordered eggs Benedict, a hot pastrami sandwich, a pastrami Reuben, and two Best of Both Worlds sandwiches. The appetizers were good. The eggs Benedict was good and so were the sandwiches. The pastrami Reuben was a bit too dry while one of the Best of Both Worlds sandwiches was the opposite with lots of Russian dressing to the point the otherwise tasty bread was soggy. The meat was sliced too thin for our personal taste but it was quality. The pickle bar was the standout feature of our visit. It was such a wonderful addition to the lunch and every type of pickle was delicious. There was a mix up with our server with our order and it carried over to the bill, but nothing that made the experience unpleasant so I will leave it at that. Overall, I highly recommend Hymie's if you are in the area. We drove up from the DMV so we won't be back soon, but if I lived in the area, I would be back regularly to try other menu items or the deli.

Google
Great Jewish deli with all the usuals. The staff is wonderful & very accommodating. Just realize that it's very pricey ($16 per sandwich) and I've found even my grilled chicken was very salty. My parents also noticed how salty the gravy tasted. Great pickles! My Mom said the cole slaw at Red Robin is better. However, she loves the brisket of beef sandwich & the sliced tongue. Dad always has the roast beef & always loves it. You will need quarters for parking.

Google
I bought ALL the ingredients to make a Hymie’s Reuben for my husband back in NY. I put it together, grilled it up and he said he likes it better than Katz’s. They slice the pastrami so incredibly thin. Tomorrow he’ll try the corned beef + pastrami combo. P.S. the sauerkraut is ridiculously good, I wish I bought more! Kim was our server and is what makes a family restaurant so inviting. And the guys behind the counter have great energy and seem like they’re having a good time too. Hymie’s will be a stop anytime I’m in Philly.

Susan T.

Yelp
Have enjoyed breakfast and lunch items here - always great quality, good service and fun atmosphere. Travel a distance to get there but we try to stop by when we're in the area.

Yelp
"When are you taking me to Hymie's again?" That was the first thing my younger brother Kyle said as his reuben-induced religious experience neared its end. After his last bite, Kyle jumped his way out of the place, overwhelmed with joy. My new goal in life is to enjoy something half as much as Kyle enjoyed this sandwich, and my egg & cheese sandwich was a pretty good start

Toby I.

Yelp
food was tasty, but not sure if its worth the price. I hope it's not a tourist trap but the sandwiches were good. The dessert we had which was a massive piece of cake was extremely sweet. Would probably come back to try this place out again though :) The service was ok, they were giving us a smaller slice but we saw how much it was and how the slices were all uniform except for the one they were trying to give us, so we opted for the other one.

Yelp
I know this iconic deli has a long history and many fans but I've never been impressed when I've tried it every several years over many decades, each time full of hope it's improved. The corned beef had chewy, gristly bits -- a former employee said they don't trim it properly. Their chopped liver was ghastly sweet. (Same former employee said they switched to cheaper, sweeter mayo.) The rye bread was cut so thin it disintegrated from the moisture of their sandwich. Just not any reason to return when there are better deli options to be had. (But not at Murray's across the street as they both have the same owner for a while now. Ironically, people are loyal to one or the other, but they are essentially the same.) Disappointing. Again. Not awful, but not a destination.

Heidi K.

Yelp
What bad is there to say? Complimentary pickles and an amazing Pastrami, Corned Beef, Coleslaw and Russian dressing on Rye bread. Just DELICIOUS! If your are in the mood for a good Jewish Deli- go. If your are in the mood for just good food- go. You leave full and happy,

Meredith R.

Yelp
After too many months in SW Florida, I was eager to head north. Today, we (sort of) satisfied my craving for Jewish 'soul food.' 'Sort of' because the meat was too dry -- an element of fat adds flavor -- it was sliced too thin, and pastrami was almost indistinguishable from corned beef. Remembering the crisp and delicious fries from NYC delis, T and I shared an order. These were a little too soft, and a little too bland. I did however enjoy the pickle bar, and of course a can of Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray. Hymie's is a mainline institution. After hearing accolades, I was happy to finally see for myself. Good, but if you're expecting Katz's, forget it! Btw, a few years ago my daughter brought home blintzes from Hymie's. They were fabulous: cheese-filled, with a fruit compote. Next on the agenda: Hymie's for breakfast.

Tanya D.

Yelp
Horrible service. I have come here serval times, and I cannot seem to get an order that is correct. Ordered a turkey Ruben 3rd time this has happened. Made wrong! I'm totally disappointed. Asked for a Ruben no kraut.. I end up with a hot turkey sandwich!! No! Spoke with Dominic, and he had no explanation nor a fix in the moment as they were closing.. telling me to come in tomorrow. I'm hungry now and by tomorrow I will not want to see you. Money was refunded, but why not just make the sandwich correct from the beginning?

Jessica M.

Yelp
This place just never disappoints. No frills and the ambiance is like a different kinda diner... with a deli/pastry store on the side (p.s. order some cookies or salads - they are yummy). The waitresses are lovely and the food is solid. We have come here more than a few times and it never ceases to please me. The wait can be hit or miss - you either get in immediately or have to wait - but the wait is worth it. In my opinion you need to have the pastrami sandwich or the corned beef sandwich, I've had both. Most places that serve this type of meat give you a lot of fat - this place, it's very lean and juicy and just amazing. Sliced to order. Order it on Rye and enjoy. They have a few specials like with Russian dressing and coleslaw. I've tried it all- fabulous. My better half has gotten a chicken sandwich it was good - but go for the goods in terms of the pastrami/corned beef. And don't sleep on the Matzo ball soup - it's so delicious. Also the pickle bar!!!! (included with your meal)

Ellie A.

Yelp
this is the family meet up brunch place. It's always packed. Food is extremely consistent. Well-made and wait. Time is never too long. Extremely reasonable prices as well as they did not go above and beyond with inflation. Often we get treats to go that are always great. pickle bar is always an added bonus. I know that the males in our family love the pickles. Staff is so friendly and it's very clean. good for the family and capable of accommodating large parties !

Elisabetta D.

Yelp
We visited this place after church on a Sunday and had a wonderful experience. The service was exceptional, and we never felt rushed, even when we lingered for a conversation after most of the crowd had left. Coming from New York, we truly appreciated the care put into the food. I was thrilled to see knish on the menu--it brought back cherished childhood memories of my mom getting knishes for my brother and me. The pancakes were enormous, and the pickle bar was a delightful and fun addition. Overall, it was a fantastic visit, and we look forward to coming back!

Edward K.

Yelp
We were on a visit to Philly from GA and happened upon Hymie's. Nostalgic Jewish deli that we really don't have back home (they try, just not as well). We had blintzes, lox, eggs, and onions. Great! Our server was certainly the friendliest I've ever encountered in a deli of this nature. We enjoyed it so much, we visited again on our way out of town. Let's just say "We got chai at Hymie's!"

Sacha B.

Yelp
Our server was super nice and attentive. Food came out fast and was delicious! Atmosphere was typical deli with art depictions of their patrons on the wall. Our booth was dedicated to one of their long time patrons.

Chris B.

Yelp
Ordered a turkey hoagie and got a tuna hoagie instead. Went back and they made a new sandwich but $16 for a dry turkey hoagie is insane!

P E.

Yelp
Went to order takeout. on 1/20/24. Temporarily closed due to water main break. Yelp would not allow me to report it as such. Left note with Yelp team. Check the webpage as that is where I saw it.

Larry G.

Yelp
Not a kosher deli!!! Jewish style only. Good trafe food. If you're only interested in style then go to Hymie's.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Always fantastic!!! Wonderful Jewish deli outside of Philadelphia. Great Matzo Ball soup with a huge variety of foods on the menu. And the pickle bar is outstanding!!

Alyssa F.

Yelp
my first review didn't fully go into my newfound passion. after getting this a second time, I can say i'm impressed. literally a beautifully made breakfast sandwich. this place will be my new go to for them. cheesy, well cooked eggs, fresh kaiser roll, great presentation. fast as well. cannot recommend these breakfast sandwiches enough

Emil G.

Yelp
As a lover of free food, I was very excited to see they offer an all-you can-eat pickle bar for free when you dine in. I tried all of the different types, but none of them appealed to me, sadly. Most of them were too salty--and I'm a pickle connoisseur who's eaten entire jars in one sitting. Their mushroom soup is delicious. Unfortunately, I realized too late that the soup base is chicken stock since their few vegetarian options are not marked. I also don't believe any of their menu items are vegan as-is. If I recall correctly, their beyond burger option comes w/ dairy cheese as a default. On the bright side, the servers are always personable and prompt, and the food arrives quickly. I also have to mention the salads which are well-portioned and fresh.

Ronald R.

Yelp
I am confined at home and have ordered the same things for months now. However, I will never do it again! The Mensh sandwich was the worst I ever had! First, it looked like it was slapped together. Second, made Iwith wrong ingredients, Called and phone answered and then hung up. Sorry that you business was damaged. My advice to all. STAY AWAY!!!! Everything is horrible now find another Delicatessen to go too

David L.

Yelp
Amazing classic Philly Jewish deli. All the classic foods and more! Corned beef was hot and piled high, pastrami melts in your mouth, matzo ball soup like penicillin for your soul, and the latkes (potato pancakes) were delicious. They also have an amazing bakery to boot. If you come on Saturday or Sunday be prepared to wait. But trust me it's well worth it. Also gotta love a free pickle bar with amazing half sour pickles!

Joanne U.

Yelp
We live in Conshohocken and finally ventured to Hymies. What a great find!!! Best service (especially Laura however they all ROCK) The food is excellent. Nova is the best. We don't mind the little drive for such a great experience. Highly recommended.

Dan K.

Yelp
When one comes to Narberth for a Jewish deli there is often a debate between Hymie's and another deli that we will call "M". This review is based solely on a comparison of two quarts of matzo ball soup from each deli for takeout. We went quart to quart and here is my analysis: Price: Hymie's: $13 M's: $14 Packaging: Hymie's: broth and balls separate M's: broth and balls together Temperature: Hymie's: broth is appropriately hot. Needs some time to cool before consumption M's: warm (and the matzo balls were cold in the middle) Broth: Hymie's: good flavor with some carrots celery and chicken M's: nothing but broth. Balls: Hymies: fluffy and nondescript taking on the flavor of the broth M's: a little denser but they have a bit of a flavor that I didn't care for Overall: we were expecting these two competitors to be fairly equivalent but were surprised to find that hymies is the clear winner across all metrics. We will leave another review when we sit down for a full hymies experience next time!

Dave R.

Yelp
Was in town packing up after the semester with junior and cane across Hymie's on Yelp. Though I didn't need the additional 2,000 calories, I did it anyway, and I'm glad we did. I went for the half Pastrami half Corned Beef Ruben and despite the restaurant portion being closed for the remainder of the day, we perched on the benches out front and enjoyed our monster sandwiches....taking care of lunch and dinner for me! Very tasty and great service from the guys at the deli. I will definitely return when in the area- though hopefully when the restaurant is open in order to soak on the ambience further.

Fia M.

Yelp
Great food, great service and great location. The matzo ball soup is always a hit, along with the sandwiches, love coming here for lunch.

Karen F.

Yelp
5 stars for PA - 4 stars for NYC (lol). Hymie's is "where it's at" for a Jewish-style deli - no, it s not Kosher - they serve meats AND cheeses and I think even shrimp salad. The food is terrific - I usually get the "pick 2" for $12.95 - which is a 1/2 sandwich (Their sandwiches are huge so 1/2 is plenty for me) and/or soup and/or salad. The Matzoh ball soup is great. Just be aware - they get crazy busy - especially on an Eagles Sunday - and that is where the service can really go to shit. CHECK your order before you leave the store (for take out). When I need a classic corned beef on rye or some Jewish penicillin, Hymie's is the spot!

Sarah A.

Yelp
A casual Jewish diner with a wide range of breakfast options. Finding the diner itself is a bit difficult due to its location in a small strip on Montgomery Avenue. I found it by sheer luck despite having Google Maps. Once found, there is a small metered parking lot that you can get space. The later you come, the harder it is to snag a spot. There is another lot nearby but you will need to walk. The food took incredibly long to arrive. The server told us that they prioritized pick up orders over ours so it took close to 45 minutes to show up. It was appalling because all these other people got their meals who came and ordered later than we did who had similar meal orders. Once the food arrived (piecemeal ofc), the food was just...bland? I had the banana walnut French toast which tasted like nothing. The challah was dry, the walnuts were candied or glazed or anything. Just dumped a handful of Costco kind of stale walnuts from a bag. Moreover...there was maybe four tiny pieces of burnt banana as an afterthought on the edge of the plate. They gave portions of sour cream but that couldn't rehydrate the bread interior. My dining companion had a corned beef hash but informed me it was overly salted but since I didn't try it myself, I can't say that much on it. Overall, I don't get the hype of this place and likely won't go out of my way to visit again.

Archie M.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place. Today drove up to The Kettle to find that it was closed for the holiday, so the opportunity presented itself. The veggie and swiss omelette was very good, filled with asparagus and mushrooms. The side of home fries was also seasoned and cooked well. The highlight of my trip was Rowana, my server. Delightful young lady full of warmth and energy. The trip would've been worth it just for her. Lots of great looking deli goodies, and the cakes looked to die for. I'll be back to try lunch

Sara G.

Yelp
We drove out to Hymie's today for the first time since the pandemic and we didn't realize their hours maybe changed? The seated service ended at 3:00 and we walked in at 3:15. We drove for a while with a four year old, who immediately started melting down. It was a mess and we felt horrible. A young waitress went back to her manager and asked if she could seat us and offered to personally wait our table. It was one of the kindest things a person has done for me in a long time. I don't ever expect special treatment, it was completely our fault for not checking the hours, but this absolutely touched my heart. And then they did not rush us or make us feel weird. It was just so--honestly special. The people that work there and the people who come to buy things are always kind. We loaded up on cookies on the way out because they are some of the best you can find in the area. We always ordered a turkey Reuben, regular Reuben, and matzoh ball soup before the pandemic and after the pandemic it was all just as good or better. Our daughter came with us for the first time and her pancake was incredible. It was special that the first time with her wasn't ruined by our mistake. I don't know if any of the management will see this, but we came at 3:15 on 12/9 and the people working that shift saved our day. Thank you all! We will be back much sooner next time!

John P.

Yelp
This place is f#%^ing amazing. I had the best Ruben of my life here. No exaggeration. It was a combination of pastrami and corned beef. Sooo damn good. The pickle bar was an added plus. We had a few of the half sour pickles yum!! Next time I will have to try their fried matzo!

Laura P.

Yelp
It's one of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots, I don't know why I didn't review it earlier! They have really great breakfast foods and a pickle bar(used to have pasta salad and sauerkraut too), they refurnished the whole place since last year and pickle bar was closed because of Covid! I am glad they reopened it again! Kinda sad they removed the mix-mash soup from the menu:( it was my favorite!

Melita D.

Yelp
Good food, generous portions, clean establishment and the staff is great! Go for breakfast or brunch... Jumbo White Fish Platter is enough for two or three depending on the appetite.

Mejire A.

Yelp
Love coming to hymies, the staff is super friendly, and always willing to help guide you in the right direction when looking to try something new. They get Busy in the morning so be aware! The food is always great, my go to is the lox sandwich but today I went with the T.k sandwich, and it tasted so good!

Bridgette T.

Yelp
Love the Matzoh Ball soup, best place to grab lunch and a bite to eat if you're passing through.

Eric L.

Yelp
Saturday morning, typically busy at this local deli and neighborhood, full staff filling orders. Me " everything bagel toasted with lox, capers, onion, cucumbers, thank you." Gruff guy "can't do capers without giving you a platter." Me, confused, have placed this order for 30 years from NYC to Palo Alto to Boston to Bryn Mawr - not unusual order I don't think until today. I see manager/owner, "to clarify, I just want a bagel sandwich with lox, capers, onion, cucumbers. What is the platter? I just want a sandwich." Manager, "yes, this is what you want." Ok so the platter comes and it is a large platter in a box with the bagel wrapped separately - not at all what I ordered. Young lady "let me fix that for you." Very kind. Get home to hopefully enjoy this sandwich, not so fast, it has lox, tomatoes, lettuce, lemon, cream cheese, onions. no cucumbers, no capers. I can't have dairy, so the cream cheese leaking out everywhere - sandwich goes into the trash. By the way, this was a $21 sandwich/platter they charged me for. Sadly while I live 2 blocks away, this was my first and last trip to this establishment. I also sign the order for catering from Hymie from my company. I will be asking my admin to cater from elsewhere, if they can't even get a sandwich order right, I don't want them to have our weekly commercial business. Apparent Hymie wants you to have your sandwich the way they want to make it for you, not how you order.

Sarah A.

Yelp
We got to Hymie's right at it's lunch rush, so the cashier line was long and it was unclear where we should go to order takeout. The staff was helpful and friendly, showing us how to maneuver to where we could place orders. The Gantzer Knaker (corned beef special) was terrific--such well-made rye bread--and the Best of Both Worlds (corned beef and pastrami reuben) was piping hot, especially great because we ate outside on the sidewalk in the 37°F snow flurry (they do not have an outdoor dining area) due to COVID-19. Each sandwich came with a little container of potato salad and a quarter of a pickle (spear)--pickle was well wrapped to prevent brine leakage. Last but not least, the side order of fries was just what we wanted: plentiful and flavorful. There were so many other things I'd want to return to try: rugala and assorted cookies, marbled rye and bagels, matzo ball soup, smoked fish, pickled tomatoes, etc.! Note: It's now open for indoor dining: looked like they were spacing out the tables. Staff were masked and gloved, and hand sanitizer was available.

Rick R.

Yelp
When my wife and I get a craving for some comfort food and taste for childhood memories it's a no brainer Love the matzah ball soup and Corn Beef Special My Mother-in-law May she rest in peace also loved the pickles Stay safe

David H.

Yelp
Fabulous Jewish deli with all of the required/expected elements. Great sandwiches, salads and baked goods. I only wish they were closer to where I live !!

Barbara M.

Yelp
Clean. Friendly. Best pancakes I ever had. Matzah ball soup was perfect. Can't wait to go back.

Jessica A.

Yelp
Love their Mazta ball soup on a day like today. Great deli sandwhiches. Good service mostly.

Debra M.

Yelp
I grew up close to Ben's Jewish Deli so visiting Hymie's was a special treat. Great food and service. We will be back.

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Philly I crave their meat! The corned beef and pastrami can't be beat!

Edward C.

Yelp
I am a New Yorker and I lived in the Bronx and Brooklyn communities and I love good Jewish delis.Hymie's did not disappoint. Hymies' pastrami was very good. Their home made rye bread was delicious! The reason for the four stars is I don't like to be up sold aggressively when I came in for just a sandwich. I understand selling but it was a bit much!

Carissa L.

Yelp
I got takeout from Hymie's for the first time and was excited to see what it was all about. Firstly, I didn't know how much was offered - tons of cookies and refrigerated prepared items as well as all their hot food. Yes! I had just come from the dentist, so I needed soft foods. I got a potato knish and mushroom barley soup. The staff was super nice, which is a great bonus. The soup was okay - I loved that they had a vegetarian option and it had a bit of heat to it. The knish was really yummy - I didn't realize how much I missed eating them until I dug in. Think: mashed potatoes with even more delicious carbs on the outside. ;) I have to go back to the dentist later this month, and I'm sure I'll go back to Hymie's, too!

Stacey V.

Yelp
The go-to Jewish deli in the neighborhood hands down! I'm partial to the Matzoh Ball Soup but there's so many more delish options from bagels and lox to generous omelets. Great table and takeout deli service.

Staci S.

Yelp
I just need to take a minute to say how incredible disappointed I am in Hymie's in Merion!. They said that they are too busy with Holiday parties to prepare a Shiva tray for Thursday-as if a family can plan for needing a Shiva tray!! They should be embarrassed that Pumpernicks in North Wales is going to prepare and drive the tray an hour to the Shiva House and Hymie's is too busy to provide this service to a family 10 mins away! Pumpernicks understands the needs of the community helping where they can and Hymie's apparently does not seem to care for the members of it's community-Shame!

Eric M.

Yelp
Good Jewish deli food on a par with places in NYC. Free parking behind the restaurant and lots of shops to explore within walking distance.

Posh P.

Yelp
Amazing deli!! Pastrami was melt in your mouth and the service was great. The desserts are delicious!!

Yelp
Food is always top-notch service is always timely and engaging and ambience is a busy deli restaurant that is always warm and welcoming

First time visiting Hymie's but it certainly won't be my last. I had chicken matzo ball soup and a corned beef and pastrami sandwich. The soup was good but the sandwich was amazing!! The service was fast and friendly. In and out in 30mins for dine in service at lunch. They have a large selection of baked goods that I'm looking forward to trying the next time I visit.
