Owner Hy Aisenstat opened the 1st Hy's Steakhouse in Canada in 1955 & subsequently expanded in Canada & US. He died in 1988, & wife Barbara took over until she died in 2008, & son Neil became its President/CEO. In 2011, the Japan-based G. Lion Group acquired ownership of the Hy's Steakhouse in HI, which also operates La Vie & Quora restaurants at the Ritz Carlton Waikiki.
Hy's Steakhouse HI opened in 1976 & has maintained itself as an old-school award-winning, fine dining steakhouse located in the Waikiki Park Heights condo where prime grade steaks are aged, trimmed on site, grilled over kiawe wood, & served in an elegant old-world ambiance. It's a perfect place to celebrate special occasions.
My daughter's family lives in Wailuku, Maui & had planned to join us on Oahu for the holiday weekend. Granddaughter Kayla was to turn 9 that weekend, & w/ my hubby's birthday just a few weeks prior, it was a perfect time to have a celebratory dinner at Hy's Steakhouse. Called 3 weeks prior for a reservation, but there was no availability during prime dinner time. W/ a 9-year-old, you know that 8:15p reservation, which they had available, would be way too late. I explained the situation to the hostess who put us on a waitlist which eventually cleared.
We were treated to an excellent dinner:
* Cheese garlic bread. Served warm, the cheesy, garlicy bread sticks were addictively delish! It was complimentary; however, if you request additional bread, there is a charge.
* French onion soup. Perfectly made w/ caramelized onion & gruyere, mozzarella & Parmesan cheese, no skimping of cheese here! Love the rich, flavorful soup that complemented the melting cheese.
* Delmonico steak (16 oz). Chose mashed potatoes & sautéed veggies to complement the juicy, soft, & flavorful steak. Daughter's choice, & she loved it & could finish only 1/2 of the generous portion. (This cut is named after the Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City, made famous in the mid-19th century. English in origin, it's named after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, which was one of his favorite dishes.)
* Beef Wellington. Excellently prepared with mushroom duxelle, prosciutto, Dijon mustard & served w/ a tasty truffle demi-glace & fully loaded baked potato & sautéed veggies. So glad that my hubby & I shared this dish (carved at tableside), as 1/2 was such a generous portion & so filling. Our son-in-law also ordered it, but could finish only 1/2 of it. It was wrapped w/ a buttery, flaky pastry crust & had a nice crunch that contrasted w/ the tenderness of the juicy beef. Really old-school dish that you hardly see around.
* King crab legs (side order). Had a craving for crab legs, & the sweet juicy crab meat did not disappoint! Good sized crab legs served w/ clarified butter.
* Kids' spaghetti w/ meat sauce & garlic bread. Kayla enjoyed her spaghetti, which was a generous portion.
* Chocolate Lovers Flambe. Definitely a must-order item & a show stopper w/ our waiter creating a burst of flames at tableside in cooking the chocolate sauce w/ burgundy, chocolate, amaretto, coffee liquor, & brandy & pouring it over Haagen Daz vanilla ice cream w/ pineapples, bananas & strawberries. Although I love bananas foster, 2 chocolate lovers in our family defaulted to this choice. No complaints, as it was heavenly & so refreshingly delicious!
While we ordered only one order, our waiter made 2 separate dishes, each w/ its own scoop of ice cream & fruits for the 5 of us & a candle each for the birthday person. (The Japan-based owner made a management decision to NOT offer any complimentary dessert for special occasions. Wish management would reconsider, as fine dining establishments locally oftentimes provide a complimentary dessert for such occasions, & diners are paying high prices at these restaurants. Thanks to our waiter, Jason, for accommodating.)
Excellent customer service provided by tuxedoed staff that made you feel like VIPs. Our waiter, Jason, was over the top & ensured that we enjoyed our dining experience, esp. w/making our flambe desserts into birthday desserts. And he took our picture & gave us two framed photos as keepsakes. Jason's finesse was exceptional!
Entertainment by Vernon Sakata, an acoustic, classical guitarist from the 70's group Schnazz, from Wed to Sun, 6:30p to 9p. Sadly, our favorite Audy Kimura of "Friends & Lovers" fame, retired.
W/ high ceilings, rich dark wood paneling, plush leather booths, authentic Tiffany stained glass & library book shelves, the ambiance creates an old English mansion & is a special occasion favorite.
Reservations only. Dress code of required collared shirts & closed-toe shoes for men; no beachwear or flip flops. Complimentary valet parking only. Open daily 5p to 9p.
An outstanding experience of excellent food, great ambiance, & superb customer service made this a special dinner for us. Nine-year old Kayla summed it up perfectly by saying, "too fancy!" Yup, she's learning that it is how it should be.
