Hy's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar

Had a really nice dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse. The food and service were great overall. We ordered the New York peppercorn steak. The steak was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The peppercorn sauce was good, though it felt a bit more buttery than peppery for our taste. Still enjoyable. We also had the Caesar salad, which was fresh and tasty, but slightly heavy on the oil this time. On our last visit, everything was fantastic, so this felt like a small thing. Overall, it was a good experience and definitely worth checking out. We would happily come back again.

My fiancé and I wanted to try a new place for our 9th year anniversary, so we decided to make reservations here. We found out after I had booked, that it was the same spot where my dad popped the question to my mom, decades ago! We started with the prawns and the cheese toast which was absolutely divine, I know the cheese toast sounds pretty whatever at word value but trust me when I say it’s life changing! I had ordered the rib steak and she ordered the steak Neptune. The meat was cooked flawlessly and literally melted in your mouth, excellent flavour and beautifully marbled fat throughout the piece. The disappointing thing was the mashed potatoes and gravy, they weren’t bad but they didn’t punch out of their weight class like the rest of the meal. Everything else was excellent, so it still gets an 5/5 in my book. That being said I would highly recommend checking this place out if you are looking to treat yourself!

Our server, Viktor, made our experience absolutely amazing. We ordered the 20oz rib steak—it was cooked perfectly and more than enough to share. The mashed potatoes were a great pairing. They also have a large wine selection to choose from. We also tried: Cheese Toast – a must-try Foie Gras Terrine – a must-try Caesar Salad – prepared table-side and definitely a must-try Beef Wellington – delicious Bananas Foster – another must-try If you’re in Calgary and looking for a great steakhouse, this is definitely a must-visit!

I ordered the crab cake and Caesar salad to start and the vegetarian pasta for my main course since I wanted something light. The food is decent, but it does have that chain-restaurant feel. Nothing wrong with that. Excellent customer service and atmosphere though.

The steak great. The cheese toast, to die for. We also really enjoyed the crab cake and banana foster which they prepare table side. In previous visits we had the Caesar salad which is also very good and prepared table side as well. I had the halibut on this visit - I think it was seasonal and it was only okay. I’d stick to steak.

Incredible experience overall! I had the beef Wellington and it was so good, the side asparagus was also great and complemented the dish well. The dessert was bananas foster, and it was also incredible. Great presentation, it’s fun to see them make it right in front of you.

We visited Calgary in early September and had dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse. We ordered the New York Strip and the Rib Steak Neptune; hands down the best steaks I’ve ever had in my life. I’m still dreaming about that steak! The flavor, tenderness, and quality were on another level. Of course, the amazing Alberta beef definitely played a big part in how incredible those steaks were. I’d highly, highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Calgary.

Oh my god — I’m truly impressed. This will definitely be my favorite place in Calgary. Everything was perfect, from the warm and welcoming hostess to the amazing ambiance. The décor is beautiful, the bar is stylish, and the seating is both comfortable and elegant. The service was exceptional — my waiter was attentive, kind, and genuinely pleasant. I didn’t manage to try all the dishes this time, but I will definitely be back. The oysters were simply outstanding, and the happy hour was one of the best I’ve experienced. I highly recommend this restaurant — it’s an absolute gem in Calgary, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Great service relative to Toronto equivalent! I'm a torontonian and was reluctant to go to a chain that I had at home. Was pleasantly surprised with the great service and experience here. This Calgary location definitely embraces being a premium experience. Our server Bruce was fantastic and carried himself perfectly. Rib steak was delicious. Cheesy bread was fantastic.

Our 2nd time at Hy's , our first time was the best experience, our steak Diane was a little overcooked for our liking, we want our steak medium rare and it came out well done, maybe because they have to cook the steak table side the 2nd time. The prawns and scallop are good. The cheese toast is the best, unfortunately the serving is small as well as the bananas foster is small but very good and prepared table side. Good service And Ambiance has the feel of luxury.

Everything about this place is not only nice but so well thought out. I was told about this place by a local while at a bar and just happened to come across it while I was exploring the area. The vibes here are unmatched for a steakhouse. Between the dim lighting, the art, and the live music, the ambiance wad just out of the world. The service here was also phenomenal. Our waiter was so helpful. He gave us back history on the place, told us about the quality of their meat (which is top 2% in the country btw), and helped us decide on what to order and which wine paired we'll with our meal. The food was nothing short of FIRE. I ordered the steak Neptune, and my co-worker ordered the Gorgonzola filet. We were practically quiet while we ate because everything about it was delicious. The steak melted in my mouth, the sear was perfect, and the temperature was just right. The bill came out to about $180-200 after a good tip. Come check this place out!

We had an exceptional dinner! The food was delicious. Tableside Caesar salad is a must. Had the filet Hy's way and the filet with Gorgonzola. Both cooked to perfection. But the stand out was the service. Dino as our server was amazing. Great recommendations and so attentive. We will go back just to see Dino again and try some more of his other recommendations.

Food good but ambiance terrible. Table near bar with horrific elevator "music" being played by DJ. Spoiled a special birthday meal. Longview Steakhouse a much better choice.

Very welcoming upon arrival. Take them up on the coat check option. Very helpful plus not many areas at the tables to stash them. Cool vibe with the amazing behind the glass grill station. Also several old school table side prep options. The table tried the amazing cheese toast and the census was it is delicious however nothing exceptionally different. Table side ceasar salad was a very nice presentation. Our waiter went above and beyond to make sure all of our preferences were managed so he made three different bowls. One no anchovy, one gluten free and one standard. They were good but missing that bite! That flavor punch. We tried adding a bit more red wine vinegar but still we weren't wowed. Each of us had a different entree the two happiest ordered a filet which was cooked perfect and the half chicken also flavorful. The fish of the day was average and the pasta choice fell flat. The other reason for the minimal stars was the live music choice of the night. It made two out of the four get headaches. He sang a cappella which sounded like very odd ranting for over an hour. No harmony. Unfortunately tonight's experience fell flat although there were highlights I'm not sure I'd rush back.

Solid 4 stars. Would have been 5 but the table side Caesar Salad was lacking. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. I have been here a couple times and you can't go wrong with their Steaks. Most recent visit I had the chicken and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Food was great! Got oysters Rockefeller and ahi tuna for the starters - fresh and tasty. Bone in rib was perfectly done, and went well with the "only" sauce. Also got the onion rings which we loved! We were there on a Fri night with no reservation and got seated at the bar (bartender was super nice). Live music was played. Also saw some live cooking at some dining tables - seems cool experience. Overall highly recommended!

The food was very delectable and the drinks were good. The service was very nice. Pascal is an amazing waiter... the ambiance is really cool! It is very high-end luxury type area but then there is a celebrity wall plus a little bit of a regular steakhouse vibes. All in all this is a must if you are visiting Calgary, celebrating an occasion, or you just want time go out. I highly recommend!

I had been referred to Hy's by several locals, so I had to give it a try. I wasn't exactly dressed "business casual", but I was able to take a seat in the lounge for happy hour (and full service) My server suggested a great starter, with the seared scallops and caesar salad. She also advised that they use only the best sourced beef in Canada and there were really no bad choices on the menu The caesar salad is prepared table side, the preparation was quick and the food did not disappoint! The desserts looked but I was too full to try ‍

We invited our husbands for their birthday celebration. The server was very attentive and nice (Alex) at the beginning of the night, but when I pointed that the bone-in rib steak 32oz (162.95$) was burned and tasted bitter, Alex became defensive and made a simple explanation and said that next time will be better. My friend complained about her baked potato being hard. It was not well done and it was a simple thing to bake and they couldn't even nail it. It was our first experience in this restaurant and we were very disappointed. We will not coming back and we would recommend you to save your money and expend it in a burger king , you will have a better experience for the price you pay.

I visited Hy's in Calgary awhile back. Overall, this restaurant has a nice atmosphere/decor. The Canadian Black Angus bone-in rib steak was good (the marbling was really good) and I'd give it 8.3/10 considering the price.

The food was great, ambiance is worth it. Definitely recommend and I will be back soon

We had a party of 14 that went there during the Calgary Stampede. The food was delicious! I was even able to get a "Rusty Nail" cocktail. Something a lot of bars don't know what it is. Over all we had a great time. This is a high end steakhouse. It's worth it but it is expensive. One other thing is that a couple of us had items added to our bill that we didn't order. Something to watch if you go.

First time in Calgary Canada and i looked up this place which had great reviews. I have to say this place did not disappoint. They had exceptional wine and the steak, THE STEAK!, had to be one in my top five steaks I have ever had. The atmosphere, the service and the food lived up to all the hype. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Calgary.

Walked into Hy's about 45 min before closing on a rainy Sunday night. We shared the place with maybe two other tables, so it was quiet. Beautiful place with comfy seating. Low lights which is nice for a date night. This was my first visit to Calgary and Hy's did not disappoint. Service was exceptional. The filet was delicious. Thanks for a great birthday dinner!

Beautiful place and great service from Evandro for our party of 11-table side service of the caesar salad and the bananas foster and cherries jubilee did not disappoint, and the meat was fantastic!

Came here on a whim because we heard they had great French onion soup. Yep would agree this is some of the best I've ever had! It was so cheesy and gooey. The best time. We sat at the bar and were served by a wonderful bartender. He was attentive and made great martinis. We got there before the dinner rush, so it was quiet and felt like your traditional upscale steakhouse.

I personally love coming here for lunch than dinner! I find their lunch menu to be better than their dinner! I had their lamb shank on polenta for lunch yes it's weird to eat that at lunch but I didn't care and I didn't regret it! The lamb had NO SMELL no GAMY texture and it was so soft and seasoned perfectly not overwhelming with flavours but not bland. A little balsamic glaze wouldn't have hurt but I was a happy camper at lunch. My friend had their lobster and crab rolls and these are 10/10!!! They came in 3 little cuties and French fries. We are definitelyComing back for lunch!

We had a great experience here. We had the whole patio to ourself. Seemed like the restaurant closed a bit early, because we were last to leave. But that might have been because of Canada Day. Definitely would go back. Thanks to the staff for not rushing us. Very kind!

I always enjoy going to Hy's for lunch/dinner. Service is always excellent and the food is consistently delicious. The atmosphere and decor is truly inviting, comfortable and relaxing. Today I ordered lamb shank polenta which was cooked to perfection and the Caesar salad was fresh, crisp and delightfully refreshing. We paired the meal with a very nice bottle of French Bordeaux. Absolutely wonderful lunch with friends who had Cobb Salad, Fresh Lobster, Crab and Shrimp rolls, Escargot and New York Steak Sandwich. Can never go wrong here.

Time for a new update, my good old Hy's! Ordered via Uber Eats this evening. We had - 20 Oz Bone-in Rib Steak, rare, of course. Very well-seasoned steak, grilled to tender perfection. Every bite was like heaven! - Charred Lemon Parmesan Asparagus - nicely cooked asparagus, grilled. Must squeeze lemon juice all over! Gives it a nice, bright pop to the asparagus! - Cacio e Pepe Pasta - mum loves this pasta dish! The blend of the different cheeses of pecorino, romano & ricotta makes every bite a sure delight! - Cauliflower Gratin - Hy's has elevated this simple, plain vegetable into a star dish! 4 beautiful cheeses blended in harmony - emmental, Swiss cheese, parmesan, and white cheddar over the cauliflower. Would definitely order again soon!

Our oldest son treated us to a special dinner outing at Hy's Steakhouse a couple days ago . It was a very enjoyable evening and my little grandson really enjoyed the tableside flaming of the Steak Diane and the Banana Fosters. Our waiters service was excellent & attentive to any requests . Several of us had the Steak Diane meal which was very tender with a mushroom sauce . The shrimp & scallop dish and famous Cheesey Bread did not disappoint. The tableside Ceasar Salad was very tasty and enjoyed by all . We also ordered sides of mashed potato which was so creamy and the best ! The mini roasted glazed carrots were ok . Our grandson had the mini kids burgers with fries . It was perfect for him and he enjoyed it alot . For dessert - we had the flaming Banana Foster desserts . Excellent dinner out !

Food was very good. What made the experience was the service. Our waiter was top notch, he made the experience wonderful.

Located inside CORE shopping mall in downtown Calgary, this place serves up some fantastic fares. If you are in the mood for something high-end, elegant, and you want to treat yourself, this is the restaurant to be at! The lounge is very stylish with comfortable leather couches, I personally prefer it to the dining tables. The servers here are very attentive and are quick for refills and are happy to answer any questions. We started off with the prime beef sliders and Hy's Famous cheese toast. There was honestly nothing special about the cheese toast and came served wrapped in tinfoil, which made it look cheap. I don't know what I expected but it really is just melted cheese on buttered toast. For $11, I don't think it was worth it at all. The sliders, however, were delicious. The beef had a lot of flavour and the soft buns complimented the crunch of the onion rings perfectly. It's a very unique combination and I really enjoyed it, especially the horseradish sauce inside it giving it a lil tang. For entrees, we ordered the beef Wellington and the filet à la Hy's. The beef Wellington was fantastic and was honestly...the best thing I've ever tasted. They did not skimp on the foie gras and you can certainly taste it throughout. The pastry wasn't soggy and I savoured every last bite. The brandy mushroom sauce that's served with the Filet à la Hy's is phenomenal and complimented the meat perfectly. Hy's truly knows how to treat a filet well because the meat was cooked a perfect medium rare. Even though the main focal points of our entrees were stellar, the potatoes leave something to be desired. I found them quite bland and honestly, a bit dry so that's what's preventing me from giving this place a perfect 5 stars. The dessert was nothing to complain about but I personally think the salted caramel creme brûlée shone through. It's so satisfying making the first dip with your spoon and hearing the caramelized sugar crack. The creme brûlée was smooth and the caramel flavour was consistent. Probably one of the best creme brûlée I've ever had. Overall, I would highly recommend Hy's Steakhouse and would definitely return. I'm excited to try their other menu items next time I'm down in Calgary.

Seriously! I've eaten at steakhouse's all over the World! And this is the best service I've ever received along with the best food! I'm gonna come back to Calgary just for this place

Definitely a gentlemen's club vibe. Great spaciousness for drinks and laughs. Think 18 holes and want to live it with a great steak. Crab cake, singular, was meh. Steak was A+. Great for casual dining, date or chill!

Sorry first time at the famous Hys. I'll start with atmosphere A+ , staff A+. I love Steak and Lobster I've had it in many places. This is what we had tonight, we both ordered the famous Steak and Lobster from Hys one of Canada's most known Steak house. I am a tradesman, so I try to always get the best bang for the buck right? Well for the cost of our dinner around 3 bills not even close. My Steak my New York had a mouth full of grizzel. Trying to cut it with the beautiful steak knife that cut like a butter knife. Come on I've been to a couple places that when you ask for a steak knife they laugh. The famous cheese toast, come on excellent cheese but come on torched cheese on raw bread, I hope I just had a bad a little to sensitive day but listen our server was amazing, Kim made us laugh and sold a great show but like I said I gave staff and atmosphere was A+. This is Alberta I'd figured the steak was gonna be threw the roof. Sorry besides the steak I liked everything.

Good steakhouse and great service, it is my go-to spot for steak night. Always a safe choice.

We dined at Hy's on our last day in Calgary, to enjoy their famous steaks. Weren't disappointed. Dino our waiter was wonderful, attentive & gracious to all our needs. And there was 8 of us. Highly recommended!

Went to Hy's on a Sunday night with my girlfriend & was instantly greeted & seated by ultra-friendly staff. My server Mike did a phenomenal job introducing the menu to us & his recommendations were on point. If I had to say one thing about this restaurant was that Mike deserves 5 stars for his service - he was very detailed & attentive to what we liked and made sure we had a pleasant dining experience. The rib eye was cooked perfect & the bananas foster is a must-order. Don't forget the Caesar's salad & cheese bread either.. they make the salad & dessert right in front of you. Would come back again! Ask for Mike.

It's very hard to give less than 5 stars to such an incredible dining experience as Hy's. Food is to die for. Ambience is high class. Decore is perfect and comfortable. The wait staff were friendly knowledgeable and professional. Our experience just lacked luster. Other steak houses we've attended such as Ruth's Chris and Modern were very good at building the experience to a crescendo when the meal arrives. Hys was good but not great for all the effort they put into each meal. Would happily attend dinner here again. The dry aged bone in 24 Oz rib steak has me intrigued. I feel Hys is focused more on not getting in the way of your dining experience rather than creating one for you. I'm sure I'll be back but I'll be looking to be wowed.

A fantastic establishment in atmosphere, ambiance, food, service and everything else. We requested to be seated by the windows (as I find this restaurant to be too dark for my taste) and it was granted. The wine/alcohol menu is on an iPad, so that was pretty neat and intuitive to navigate along with categorizing in wine taste (fruity, dry, smooth, sweet, etc). As I am not familiarized on the types of wine, this helped me decided to choose a wine. The service was great in presentation, manners, form and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered the Calamari & Jalapeno as starters, and it was amazing. The lightly battered chic pea flour gave a unique texture, taste; without overcooking the calamari and the portion sizes were enough for 2 people. As for the main, we both ordered Filet Mignon (with baked potato) except one of the order was a Gorgonzola Filet Mignon. Both of the items were amazing and the difference between the 2 Filet Mignon was the size of the meat, the Gorgonzola being smaller. Finally, we had an Apple Crumble for dessert and it was great. Overall, a special occasion worth every penny for the experience. I would go back for more, but not for a long while.

If you want great service, good food and a dining experience that you won't regret? Get to Hys steakhouse, it's not cheap but it's worth it. Came for my birthday and almost had a heart attack when the banana foster was flambe'd in front of me. I didn't feel worthy especially after the steak and fixings we just had. I was overwhelmed with how good everything was and just loved our waiter he was knowledgeable and made recommendations which again I live for. Literally. I'm Coming back for my birthday again this year

Probably one of few in Calgary that deserves a five star From the moment you walked in toby got seated first class Oxana was great , odered Steak Diane Done to perfection Paul came over to see how our meal was Paul is the manager, his professionalism is one of the key reasons the staff is first-rate So far probably the only five star rating I've given in Calgary Hys definitely worth the money

I've been to Hy's for a weekday lunch several times and they never fail to impress. The service is always on point. The private rooms in the back of the restaurant are great for small intimate groups. And, first and foremost, the steaks are always perfectly cooked and seasoned. The lunch menu leans a little heavy to the non-steak side of things. But, if you are looking for a good steak with a reasonable price-point, go for the steak sandwich. It is not a standard pub or diner sandwich of two slices of bread with sliced meat in the middle. Rather, it's an entire thick-cut steak that just happens to be placed on top of a piece of garlic bread.

Hy Aisenstat wanted to bring good food to Calgary and he's always done that and that mandate has continued to today. Steak~Steak~Steak. Good old Alberta beef. Can't beat it. Enjoy Hy's. Nothing better.

Hy's is my number one spot for happy hour. What's the dealio? Bubbles are 40% off, select wines for $8.00 and some cocktails are 50% off. There's also a tasty list of specially priced food, including one of the best steak sandwiches I've ever eaten. I ordered a New York Steak Sandwich (hh $20, regular $29). I ordered my steak medium rare and it came as requested. The steak was so tender, I barely needed to use a knife. The flavor was phenomenal, my steak was squirting with the richness of its own juices. I ordered the baked potato, which was massive and generously topped with scoops of sour cream, bacon and chives. This was the best steak I've eaten. I want to come back to try the featured steaks for dinner (e.g. Neptune, Filet Mignon, Oscar) and lunch. I can see why Hy's gets such high ratings on Yelp. Service was excellent and the food was superb. Also note that now until Christmas, you can drop off a Christmas toy for The Magic of Christmas, a charity that gives toys to children in need.

Really, this restaurant is outstanding. The atmosphere is relaxing. It is a large restaurant on one side of the space and a bar/lounge on the other end. The wait staff were all excellent. We started with (3) appetizers. Why not? There are a lot of rave reviews of the cheese toast. It was really very good and an excellent value at $9 though for me, there are other items more desirable, but that doesn't diminish it's quality or value. I would give it 4 stars. The prawn cocktail was 5 stars. There wasn't too much horseradish taste that some places have, which can overwhelm the seafood flavor. Then there was the Cesare salad, also 5 stars. Prepared at your table for two, it was perfectly balanced for flavor with no single ingredient overwhelming the salad. (Like one place we were at in Victoria that had so much Tabasco sauce, my lips were burning. To top off that experience, the waiter/owner made it obvious he deserved a big tip for his creativity.) Main course: The esteemed filet Mignon Chateaubriand. This was truly perfect. An outstandingly tender piece of meat that was perfectly medium rare as ordered. It had a wonderful slightly charred crust and a perfect interior, served with Bearnaise and a beef juice sauce. The filet was accompanied by button mushrooms, cauliflower, green beans, roast potatoes and a half tomato with cheese. These were all outstanding. Not too much spice, crisp and perfectly timed to be the perfect complement to the meat, which is hard for a kitchen to do. 5 stars out of 5? I'd say 6 out of 5. I asked the waiter to hold off on the dessert as we were very full. He patiently gave us an hour and then we had bananas foster. I found the sauce a little intense just on the bananas alone and definitely better with the ice cream. If I ordered it again, I'd ask for extra ice cream. The restaurant kindly donated the dessert to our anniversary celebration. Thanks so much! We've been to quite a few steak houses. This is the first one that really hit a home run on everything served.

what a horrible experienc, terrible steak, you would think these guys would know how to cook a steak but be prepared to be disappointed I ordered a New Yorker rare and it was over cooked, new guests had the Porterhouse and they were ok with there's, I had the waiter take back my dinner and it wasn't until my guests had finished there meal the manager came up to me to ask if he could do something about my terrible meal, nice of him to wait until everyone's one done to ask!!!! I do not recommend this place if you're after a steak cooked any way than well done or over cooked. again what a terrible experience

Hy's Steakhouse really does well in representing the steak side of Cowtown. We went on a whim to try out their happy hour, only to be entranced by our own hunger to the dinner side of the restaurant. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the steaks in general, and every recommendation was spot on - great cheese bread! Ordered the Hy's Prime Rib Steak, came perfectly medium rare and tasted as great as a well dry aged steak would taste - the perfect char holding all the flavor you can ask for. The flambé'd banana desert was made table-side and a nice and impressive way to end my meal. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was great, and the staff were constantly cheerful and on the top of things. Decor and atmosphere matched the restaurant's higher end steakhouse vibe, although some tables, including ours, might have been a bit dark/ not well lit up enough for my taste.

Best steak ever. Best cheese toast ever. Best key lime pie ever. Best service ever. My wife and I came in for an early dinner after work after being turned away elsewhere for not having a reservation. Hy's welcomed us in to their lounge immediately with the only condition that they had a limited menu until 5pm as they were in the process of changing their kitchen over from the lunch menu to dinner. Not a problem as were were ok with having a glass of wine and a few appetizers. Our server greeted us shortly after sitting down and offered us our choice of distilled, sparkling or ice water. She returned with our waters and their wine list which is housed digitally on an iPad. After giving us a few minutes to peruse the wine choices she returned to take our order and give us the verbal rundown of the food available. We were both pleasantly surprised that they were offering a steak sandwich during this time of turnover and both chose to go with that option along with some cheese toast to start. Now you might be thinking to yourself "Really Chris? Cheese toast?". This was the best darn cheese toast anyone has ever served me. The cheese blend is mouthwatering and the bread is broiled to perfection. The bread hasn't just been shoved through an oven to melt the cheese, the cheese is nice and crispy on top. They also cover the basket with tinfoil when bringing it to your table so the cheese stays gooey and warm until your ready to take your first bite. They grill the steaks in a glassed-off area in the restaurant so you can see your cut being cooked right in front of you, should you be sitting in the right place in the restaurant. My wife and I had front row seats. The steak sandwiches arrived just as we were wrapping up our last bites of the appetizer. Perfect timing. For my side I went with the mashed potatoes. They were thoroughly pureed, not a lump to be found and piped onto the plate in a fancy looking mound. They could have used a little more seasoning but were still quite enjoyable. The steak was almost twice the size of the toast its served on. I had my steak the only way a steak should be cooked, medium rare, and my half-inch thick slice of heaven was done perfectly. The steak was tender and juicy and a very large portion for what you would be expecting when you order a steak sandwich. The price is also par for the serving size coming in just under $27. The after dinner menu has a large range of port and cognac options ranging from $10-200 a glass. There are a few warm options too like a B52 or blueberry tea. The dessert section has a few solid choices. While I would have chosen the Bananas Foster, my wife wasn't feeling as adventurous and we went with the key lime pie to share. The size of the slice is the same as you would expect from any restaurant, but the dessert is on a different level from your average restaurant. The crust was nice and crumbly. The filling had a creamy colour to it, not some weird fake green colour you get with a store bought pie. You could tell it wasn't some frozen pie they buy from a food supplier and thaw out a piece for you. The slice was also topped with a healthy amount of whipped cream. The total for all of the above with two glasses of wine was just over $100 including tax. A price easily worth paying again and again for one of the best steaks you'll find anywhere. Kudos to the staff for their excellent service. From the ladies at the door with their warm smiles and greetings, to our server who was there just at the right time and not overbearing, and the gentlemen clearing our plates that seemed to come out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly, great job by all.

Born and bred Calgarian, I can't help but love Alberta beef. And to get quality meat, you have to go to quality places like Hy's. This place is always busy so you know it's good. Their menu notes that their cheese toast is famously irresistible and they're not lying! The oogy googy garlicky cheese toast will remind you why you love carbs and cheese so much. Their steak salad is really hearty - the char on the steak is a nice touch to the tenderness and the light vinaigrette on the salad lets the steak shine through on this dish. Hy's strives for perfection, in quality of their food and service. Experience it yourself, you won't be disappointed - trust me!

I don't really post much, but after coming home from a business trip in Calgary, I have to let loose. Disclaimer, I'm a former Calgarian and love the city. The company I work for has an office there and they had a Stampede event - I am a sucker for being wined and dined. Now for the RANT! A group of us went to Hys Steakhouse. I've been to the location in Whistler, so my expectations were high (pun intended). I remember the food being better, but it wasn't on my dime, so I was able to forgive that part. The parts I can't forgive: 1 - The general manager. A woman with so much attitude I was left dumbfounded. 2 - Being charged 18% gratuity, only to have the waiter insist we leave more. The manager was at the front entrance when we arrived, did not smile, asked us if we had a reservation, and then instructed a young female to take us to a room at the back of the restaurant. Though I felt isolated from the action of the restaurant, I can certainly understand the appeal of having the privacy. Things progressed relatively smoothly, though our waiter (whom I'll call E) didn't seem to want to be there - moody! When the bill came he had the audacity to ask for more tip. Perhaps its just me, but when a waiter decides to put an 18% tip on the bill, then that's all they should get. Then the worst part of the night came. The GM was still at the front, I assume she moved at some point, but she was still maintaining her throne of bitterness at the end of our meal. I approached her to give some feedback on the waiter. I felt like she snapped at me, and was abrupt, rude and disrespectful. I told her I understood why the waiter was like he was. I don't think she heard me, or perhaps she just didn't care. I don't understand how the franchise keeps in business with the attitude my group experienced. On the upside, our group gave each of them nicknames and were able to laugh about the situation. The plus - Cheese Toast! Stampede = Success! Hys = Failure!

Really mixed experience at Hy's for dinner - phenomenal service and atmosphere, disappointing food quality. Since Hy's opened downtown, I've been meaning to give it a try and so I made it a point to book a business dinner there recently. I had no idea they have such a spacious interior - it was immaculate, classy, upscale, and lit appropriately (other than the extremely bright TV in the lounge area showing sports, shining it's light onto our table). The Service was also fantastic, which needless to say is expected for this price point. The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. The table side service options for a few of the menu choices was also pretty entertaining. However, I am pretty disappointed with the quality of the food. I started with the seared scallops. While I firmly believe that scallops should never be overcooked, the scallops i received were still cool in the center... which is great for a sushi joint, but not so much in this application. The $60+ steak I ordered was the most disappointing part of the meal. Hy's paints an amazing picture of how amazing their steak is. I ordered my steak rare, it came medium-rare to medium. Even a medium rare steak should still be juicy, and I found my steak to be the driest piece of expensive steak I have had in a long time - I had to choke it down. Rather than the potato side, I opted for the Gorgonzola Macaroni (Mac and Cheese), which was underseasoned and on the dry side. I would have also opted for some sort of greens, but upon seeing that steamed broccoli would have been an extra $11 or something, I figured I'd pass even if it wasn't coming out of my own pocket. It's a shame that the greens aren't a standard provided side. I later queried my entire table and we all agreed that our steaks were disappointing, which was only amplified by the fact that they were at such a upscale price point. At $125 a person including drinks, I need to be blown away by the food in addition to the experience; and unfortunately the food was lacking. For comparison, I went to The Keg twice later that week and both times I got consistent, rare, juicy steaks (for half the price).

Great food, great service. Fried Calamari and Jalapeño Peppers...5 Stars. The calamari and jalapeños were lightly coated in the chickpea flour. The calamari was nice and tender. They didn't have that crispy shell but still tasted very good...credit that to the meaty bite-sized rings (kudos to Hy's for selecting great specimens). The raita dip was a nice compliment. My only gripe is that I wished there were more pieces of fried jalapeños. Braised Pork Belly...5 Stars. Perfectly braised pork belly with a quick flash on the grill for even more flavor. Fork tender and melts in your mouth. The housemade steak sauce was excellent; savory smooth! Caesar Salad...5 Stars. Prepared from scratch table side. Doesn't get any better than that. Aromatic freahly grated parmesan cheese with a lovely light dressing. Beef Wellington...5 Stars. The tenderloin was perfectly cooked; tender, juicy bites. The foie gras and oyster mushroom duxelle added loads of flavor, as well as, the buttery puff pastry. Just an excellent dish and execution. Pistachio Creme brulee...4 Stars. The custard had the perfect consistency but was a bit light on the vanilla bean flavor.
