Xi’an Street Foods Closed Allston - Eater Boston

"Xi’an Street Foods was a Chinese street food chain known for its soup and 'Chinese burgers' called rougamo. The Allston location has closed, and it was the first and seemingly only American location of the chain. The menu offered a variety of skewers and noodle dishes, including hand-pulled biang biang noodles and rougamo." - Terrence Doyle

Xi’an Rougamo Restaurant Opens in Downtown Boston Food Court - Eater Boston

"Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe (86 Bedford St., Boston) — a mainstay on Eater Boston’s map of 38 essential restaurants — is perhaps the best known, but there’s also a year-old spot in Allston, Xi’an Street Foods (182 Brighton Ave., Boston), that is part of a China-based chain." - Dana Hatic

Yes, friends, they are open again! I was so sad when they closed due to the fire years ago. The restaurant is beautifully redecorated, the staff are friendly, and the food is just as delicious as I remembered! I’m so glad they’re back (as well as the other restaurants next door).

Google
Been here twice, first time was excellent, very chewy nice texture noodles with unique flavors. Second time noodle was sad and soggy. The cold noodle has thick sesame oil (some people really like it, but I prefer peanut sauce style). The cold chili chicken was really good both time we visited. I recommend beef soup noodle without chili oil for nice, cleansing soup. I also recommend bring your own drinks here (onezo or tiger sugar). This place is cash only.

There is no garage parking, you need to be creative to find a spot. There is no restroom inside, you need to walk to burger king to use theirs. But in terms of food, it's not bad. Definitely worth trying. 拉面's taste is close to its origin, but 面条并不是手拉的. Hot boiling fish is not very good, very little fish and not fresh fish.

Google
IMO the best food in the Boston area is in Allston and this is my favorite place by far. It has "beef noodle soup" in the name but I say skip it and get one of the biang biang noodles bowls. Lamb is my goto but there's chicken and meatless too. Portions are massive, sauce is more fragrant than spicy even though it looks hot. Better than Xi'an famous foods in NYC IMO. Everything else I've had is good too (scallion pancakes, 口水鸡, pickled veg poached fish, beef noodles, etc) but you can't go in this place and not order the biang biang noodles in some form. Poached fish bowls are actually gigantic and unlike other places I've been to they don't skimp on fish and there's plenty in there. Oh and it's cash only.

Good food, price and portions. Messy interior minimal service. Street parking. Cash only. Hand written receipt only in Chinese. Food is great 👍 big portions Great 11.95 cumin lamb biang noodles. And soups are good too but def get the dry biang noodles. 10.95 Cold chicken in chili oil was good. Salty so get rice. Water, palstic spoons, wooden chopsticks self service. I didn't mind. But tables were sticky so I wiped down w napkins and hand sanitizer. Inside small space, relaxed vibe. Cold if you sit by the door.

Google
This place has very flavor packed punch with its noodles. The cumin lamb biang biang noodles are awesome. All of their noodle dishes pretty good. But don’t forget the chongqing chicken with chili peppers a great item. If I had any complaints for 18$ seems a little small in portion size and there are bones to pick out but still delicious.

Google
The noodles are good! The scallion pancake is probably the best we had. I guess I’m just picky about 热干面… since that’s literally the only dish I can judge with that one coming from my home town. It was tasty but just not the taste I was looking for. I think I needs more sesame paste to it.

Mohsen Haidar

Google
The food is just ok. The Chinese burger is small in size and doesn’t have a lot of meat. The noodle is served in a plastic bowl and it has no taste. One of their drinks tasted like cough syrup, we probably not used to the taste. Also it is expensive.

Yelp
It looks like they might reopen soon?! I CANNOT WAIT. Their noodles were consistently delicious all dente and fresh. They were just miles above (quality/authenticity/price) anything else in the area

Yelp
Yes, it's cramped; yes, the service may fluctuate; yes, it's cash only; yes, the noodles are FIREEEEEEE. Maybe 8 tables of 2, but they can be pushed together accordingly to fit your party size. Can't go wrong with the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup, but my favorite was the Cumin Lamb Biang Biang noodles. The noodle texture was THERE, the flavors and seasoning were THERE, and the leftovers were TAKEN HOME. Do yourself a favor and come here ASAP. Name of this on UberEats is iFresh, but will show up as Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup on Google Maps. Now take this info and act accordingly.

Yelp
A small hole in the wall place, cash only. Food I've tried: - SPICY LAMB HAND PULLED NOODLE ($12): the portion is smaller, however I think for the price it is fair. The noodles itself were chewy, and I definitely felt the hand pulled quality to them. I personally would have preferred slightly thinner noodles, as the glutinous mouthful distracted from the flavors of the meat at times. The lamb was very well prepared, not gamey at all and very tender. It was very well flavored, with the right amount of cumin and a slight spicy kick. Atmosphere: - Very small store, limited seating. Classic hole in the wall feel. - Water is self serve at the front. Service: - Unclear whether you are supposed to order at the counter or if someone comes to you. I just ended up ordering at the counter. Remember it is cash only, but the prices are reasonable. Overall: - Good for a quick bite of authentic tasting hand pulled noodles.

Yelp
This place is always mobbed but the food speaks for itself. The service is okay but I come for the food. I wish they had better seating for folks that are just a party of one. Also this is a cash only establishment.

Yelp
I can't believe I have not reviewed this restaurant yet! It has easily become one of my favorites in a very short time. THE. TASTIEST. NOODLES. They do advertise their meat dishes a lot but my favorites here are the two dishes last on their list - the Wuhan dry hot noodles and the Mala noodles. Both vegetarian (yay!). Wow, what flavors! Literally each noodle strand is coated with sauce/spice. The Wuhan noodles have a peanutty sauce with addition of tiny vinegar-ish green beans. The Mala noodles have mala spice (it can get very spicy, so ask for mild if you can't handle it!), bok choy, and roasted peanuts. Order a tea egg on the side, and you're golden. I've tried their spicy crispy chicken too and it was good but it's these two noodle dishes that make me want to come back every weekend. It's a small place (only takeout in the current environment) and cash only. If you haven't been here, you are missing out!

Yelp
So sad it's closed. Was my favorite noodle spot in Allston! Hopefully they'll be back. I'll be one of the first ones back if/when they reopen.

Yelp
Came here for lunch w momma as first time patrons. WOW. Lanzhou beef noodle soup: Perfect QQ noodle texture, super tender.melt in your mouth beef slices, adjustable chili flake oil level, light broth. Cumin lamb dry noodle: springy noodle texture, full flavor, lamb not gamey/smelly Liangpi: nice n spicy, liangpi well made w nice bite, good amount of cilantro &scallions. Wish there were more gluten pcs Scallion pancake: not our Fave, a bit too oily, had to dab off excess w napkins... And wish they were denser Will def be back!

Yelp
This restaurant is the new kid on the block. Im excited to see the restaurant scene is Allston expand and I'll be back to try more noodle dishes. This place seats about 6 or 7 tables (2 per table). Felt a little cramped inside but that's allston for ya. I got the wushan noodles which were actually noodles with peanut sauce, not what I was expecting - unless you're Asian, I'm not sure if you'd like this. Service is nothing special here, I had to request a few times to get my water filled and there isnt someone actively looking out for your table.

Yelp
iFresh Noodle is so delicious! Really great gem in the heart of Allston. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and service was nice and speedy. Portions were very generous--we couldn't finish anything, haha. Entrees will run you $10 or so. The Wuhan Dry Hot Noodles were less peanut-forward than some of the other places in Boston (e.g., Chili Square) and more sesame/roasty-toasty forward, which we enjoyed! Pig ears were excellent, spicy and oily and a little acidic to cut the fat, and the liangpi tasted like you might get in Beijing. Overall, quite happy with this place. We'll be back soon!

Yelp
Love the hand pulled noodles here. The lamb cumin biang biang ones are so good, they're my favorite. The sauce is a bit light at times, could use a little bit more flavoring, but it's just the right amount of spice. If you don't like spicy foods you're probably not going to enjoy it as much here, or try to order a dish that comes as non spicy instead of trying to adjust the spiciness levels of spicy fishes. The only downside is that it's cash only, so definitely plan accordingly. They're pretty strict about this. It's also a tiny tiny place so don't expect to have seating readily available if you come as a large group.

Yelp
Yum! Came here for dinner on a Friday night around 7:15pm and we were seated after about 15 minutes. We had 1. cumin lamb skewers - these are to DIE for! So juicy and punchy with flavor. 2 skewers come with each order. 2. Lanzhou beef noodle soup - without the chili oil, it almost looks like a pho dish. The broth is light, and the noodles are delicious and QQ :) 3. Spicy oil biang biang noodle - noodles also on point. The spicy oil was not very numbing - wished for more flavor here, and also a stronger umami flavor. Wish I saved the lamb skewer to eat with this dish. 4. Spicy oil Cumin lamb noodles - again, noodles amazing. Same comments as above on the spicy oil. The lamb pieces were also good but not as amazing as the skewers I'd like to come back again to sample more of the menu and will definitely get the lamb skewers again!! Please note they don't have a restroom for customers to use....which I found to be really odd. Also wish they had legit chopsticks instead of the disposable wooden ones, because the ones they gave us were really low quality and I found it exceptionally difficult to grasp the pull the very long noodles. Water is self-serve at the front and you have to ask for spoons and napkins if you want. Service was really lacking but the noodles were QQ and amazing, so I will come back until I can figure out how to make these on my own....

Yelp
This is a fantastic little gem for cumin lamb noodles. The noodles were really awesome! Perfectly chewy noodles mixed with savory, tingly chili oil and tender pieces of lamb. The perfect amount of spice - flavorful without being firey!

Yelp
*** CASH ONLY *** hidden gem in Allston. My favorite dish here is the dry ban ban noodles. The thick hand pulled noodles are covered in a spicy cumin lamb sauce! And each bite was so chewy. I also tried their lamb bun. The flavoring you're the lamb is so gooood! It's a bit pricy for just one bun but worth the try! The brown sauce chicken is very flavorful and pairs best with a side order of rice. Be careful when eating the chicken because their are small pieces of bones with some of it! The place is really small and only seats about 20 people. I would recommend coming when they open, during off lunch hours, or getting it to go. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
The beef brisket Lanzhou noodles are awesome. Gigantic portion for the price and packed full of flavor. Mala noodles were OK, could've used more salt and spice. Please accept credit card in the future! I have had to walk away empty-handed because I had no cash on hand :(.

This place will forever be one of my favorite noodle shops in boston. I really hope they reopen

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday around 7:30 pm with a group of 7 people. This place is quite small, but they were so accommodating and pushed tables together for us. Note that this place is cash only and also has very limited options if you can't tolerate spicy foods. Only two of the items on their menu can be ordered without any spice, so I ended up getting the brisket noodle soup. The portion sizes are crazy huge! I always try to finish my food even if it means stuffing myself, but I could not finish all the noodles. The broth was extremely rich and was so delicious. The noodles had a pretty good texture. There wasn't much brisket, and the pieces were either dry or had too much chewiness/tendons. I tried my boyfriend's cumin lamb biang biang noodles, which was really good (loved the noodle texture), but was unbearably spicy! I didn't know this dish could be ordered with a lower spicy level, so I would be curious to see if I would be able to tolerate it. We also ordered the scallion pancakes to share, which were solid but definitely on the greasy side. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, but would have loved if there were more options for no spicy or lower spicy levels.

Yelp
Cash only! New noodle joint in Allston so my friend and I wanted to check it out. We started with the scallion pancake. We did not like the scallion pancake. It was just oily and thick. My friend and I ordered Lanzhou beef brisket noodle soup ($10.95) and I ordered the Lanzhou beef noodle soup ($10.95). Both beef noodle soups were flavorful and the noodles were nice and chewy. Service was alright but we had to ask a few times to have our water refilled.

Yelp
Soooo yummy! Delicious broth with good flavor. Noodles were delicious as well. Meat quality was ok, nothing comparable to the meat in NY of course. Reminds me of the most "homey" anf comforting food you can probably find when you've missed moms cooking :) Place is cash only, so be prepared! The customer service is great, all questions asked were responsed thoughtfully! Definitely would come here at least 1x a week :)

Yelp
*There are 2 yelp pages for this place: iFreshnoodles & Lanzhou Fresh Noodles This place is perfect for warming your soul on a cold day. This new noodle spot is small and filled with people. You know an asian place is good and authentic if it is filled with Asian people. I got the Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup ($10.95) and the Cumin Lamb Biang Biang Noodles ($10.95). Beef Noodle Soup: All the spices make this noodle soup so flavorful. The noodles are cooked to perfection and the chili oil on the side is the best to cut down the greasiness. The meat is tender but not fatty. Cumin Lamb Biang Biang Noodles: First of all, the noodles are chewy and wicked long like how pulled noodles should be. The lamb is also very flavorful and the chili oil cuts the grease really well. This is definitely my new favorite noodle soup in the Boston area! *CASH ONLY*

Yelp
Excellent hand pulled noodles in the heart of Allston! I ordered the Cumin Lamb Biang Biang Dry Noodle which was extraordinarily flavorful, filling, and worth every penny. I already want to go back and try some of the other things on their menu. HEADS UP! This place is cash only, so make sure you stop by an ATM before going here. But it's worth it!

Yelp
I have never wanted to give a 6 star review so badly. It's a little awkward when you walk in with the drapes behind the door, they're there for temperature control we think, but inside is a quaint and cozy little dining room. It was busy when we went so they gave us menus while we waited a few minutes and then we were sat in the corner surrounded by two windows. Perfect view of the Allston streets. It was the warmest atmosphere and then an adorable waitress came by to take our order. She was so sweet, almost brought me the wrong drink because she misheard me but we reconfirmed and laughed about to together. When she brought our cans of coke one slipped and sort of fell over so she apologized and went to get us a different one and it only made us love her more. Then the food came... OMG the food. We just stopped talking because we were on some other planet enjoying the flavor and the obvious love with which the food was made. There were a few condiments on the table and usually we would add some hot oil to our dishes but it was literally so perfect that nothing we could add would make it better. My fiance got the brisket noodle soup (the Langzhou I think?) and I got hot oil biang biang noodles. They were clearly made by hand and I couldn't stop eating it. It was just magical. This is quality you'd find at a michelin star restaurant (I presume, I've never been to one) at a ridiculously afforable price. I am at a loss for words to describe how good it was. Just OMG the food...the food!!! I can't wait to go back....maybe even today. TLDR: Go here. It's a gem.

Yelp
It's really good please eat there you have the best meal of your life. I had the biang biang lamb noodle it's my favorite meal ever I truly wish they open up again

Yelp
Excellent place for beef noodle soup on a cold evening. The menu has plenty of options. For a first time, it was mainly choosing between brisket or regular beef. We went with both and realized that you can't go wrong with either. The spice level is a bit on the mild side for the noodles, but nothing that can't be fixed with some sauce on the side. I appreciated that they had noodles without any spice for the kids to enjoy also. They are cash only, so make sure to bring some along. There is an ATM steps away if you forget. Definitely will be back to try some more!

Yelp
I went here with my partner this weekend and we had a blast! I can't recommend this place enough. The beef brisket noodles were so flavorful I literally did a little dance when I first tried it. It was earthy and warm and spicy... I didn't need to add anything to it, it was literally the most perfect soup I've ever had. It was so much though, I ended up not being able to eat even 1/2 of it! It was really affordable too, like 11 dollars for this massive bowl of heaven. The atmosphere is cozy and tight, we had to wait like 5 minutes for a table and had to maneuver in really tight quarters to get to our spot (which was fine it added to the charm)

Yelp
Coming here in the winter is not the best since they don't have double doors or door heater to block the cold each time the door opens into the petite dining area. I tried the Lan Zhou beef brisket noodle soup which was subpar. The broth was high in sodium, very generous with the MSG perhaps. The beef tendon was very hard and chewy. I prefer eating soft, melt in your mouth tendons. I couldn't manage to eat it all because of such. Nice people with not so nice food and cash only payment.

Jane L.

Yelp
Better than most places I've been in China tbh. Best comfort food in winter. Beware they only take cash though.
google avatar

Hui D.

Yelp
Most of the dishes I ordered had pretty good flavor. I was disappointed with the Chongqing chicken which was 100% chicken wing end pieces. I am ok with having bones in my chicken but this is just about the cheapest cut you could possibly use. Stay away from that dish and you should be ok.

Giselle H.

Yelp
Love their spicy oil biang biang noodles! Their chicken biang biang noodles are good too but I don't personally prefer dark meat. Very flavorful though.
google avatar

Davis C.

Yelp
Really good and not too expensive. I recommend the Lanzhou handpulled beef noodles and the cumin lamb biang biang noodles.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Amazing hand-pulled noodles! I got the Cumin Lamb Biang Biang Noodle. The chew of the noodle, the chili oil, and the flavorful meat were all perfect.

Jenn C.

Yelp
I don't want to rate this place that high because I want it to stay small and hidden but it was amazing. Definitely the best hand pulled noodles in Boston. Cash only and minimal standing space when you're waiting though.
