I Pupi

"Although his name could easily be that of a theatre star, Tony Lo Coco is actually the owner-chef of the I Pupi restaurants, and the proud holder of a Michelin star. His wife Laura is at the helm in the small, elegant dining room with a modern and minimalist feel, which is dominated by a large gleaming cabinet-cum-sideboard. As for the cuisine, Tony demonstrates real care in his choice of local ingredients, working with the best local cheesemakers, fishermen, farmers and breeders – you can happily let him guide you through his imaginative and personalised Sicilian cuisine. We highly recommended the meat and fish tasting menus, the mixed menu to taste a bit of everything, and the chef’s stigghioladish (his own take on street food)." - Michelin Inspector

Chef Tony Lo Coco welcomed Tucci into his Michelin star restaurant for his take on the Sicilian classic spaghetti alla bottarga. "The core, the soul of your restaurant," Tucci said to the chef, "is taking the really simple food of Sicily, and elevating it."

Everything was remarkable. Our testing menu included 10 dishes and took over three hours, so make sure you allow plenty of time to fully experience this restaurant. For someone who grew up in Sicily it was a pleasure to taste so many flavours that reminded me of my childhood and of typical dishes that are made in completely different and creative way. Friendly service. Would definitely go back 😊

Truly amazing experience! Everything was thought through - even down to the waitors' clothes matching the interior. We had the traditional tasting experience, presenting Sicilian classics but in a new way; either served in a completely different, interesting way (e.g. in the shape of Sicily) or using other ingredients but matching the original, intended taste. Fully deserving the Michelin star - and to a much more affordable price (compared to danish prices).

The food was a very interesting interpretation of the traditional dishes BUT the LoCATION is EMBARRASSING!!!One of the reasons why I booked this restaurant was the description of the location mentioned also on Michelin guide as a Palazzo from the 18th century, but the restaurant is in an anonymous depressing room absolutely detached from the Palazzo that you don’t even get the chance to see. Really a shame! Furthermore, the dining room was extremely noisy for a Michelin-starred restaurant. Sound-absorbing panels should be a given.

One of the best meals we had in Sicily! Raised the bar on the local ingredients where every dish had the right level of creativity without sacrificing flavor. Service was impeccable. The chef decides on the dishes to serve you but when I saw one of the dishes another table had I was very jealous. I mentioned it to the server and they ended up serving me that too! The best dish was definitely their version of a bruschetta. Just wow.

Food was super creative, unconventional without being absurd. We ordered individual dishes rather than the tasting menu. The risotto and anchovy ravioli were two standout dishes, but everything was delicious. They supplement the main courses with small interludes of tasty bites. Even though the ordered portions are small, enough gets brought to the table to make it a very fulfilling meal. Service was immaculate, attentive and professional without being intrusive. Prices are fair considering the quality and originality. The place is tucked into an unexpected neighborhood and Google Maps may send you the long way around to get there, but we were happy we went.

Creative dishes with a modern twist on Sicilian classics. Extensive wine list with knowledgeable sommelier, attentive wait staff and overall a good fine dining experience! We dined for around 3 hours, left feeling satisfied and very full! Definitely a great way to spend our last night in Sicily! Very pricey but nonetheless an experience in itself.

Service was excellent. The food was delicious. So much thought had gone into their vegetarian tasting menu. Portions are generous.

Excellent food, poor and condescending service. Pro: excellent presentation and most of the dishes were very good. The chef knows what he’s doing and probably has a good team in the kitchen. Con: waitress was not impressed with us, a family of five with three quiet teens/pre-teens, perhaps as we only took the five course tasting menu. Sommelier paired the tasting menu with a glass without telling us one thing about the wine nor asking for our preferences. We had an ant in one of the kids dishes, instead of simply apologizing and replacing, waitress grumbled that she didn’t see anything and took it away, though it was replaced. They brought out the desserts, one short (4 instead of 5), so my wife didn’t have one of the desserts, they didn’t bring the 5th one out. Feels like the service thinks treating customers badly gets them points. Instead, they just look like fools.

Yelp
Oh Stanley Tucci, you beautiful man you. We never would have thought to venture out to Bagheria (an hour from our hotel in Cefalu) had it not been for Tucci featuring I Pupi on his "Searching For Italy" program. Leading up to our reservation (make sure to get one) at I Pupi, we began to wonder if it was really worth the Michelin star pricing. Were we going to regret spending the money? Well, the answer was a resounding "NO." Every bite at I Pupi was a delight. We were there for three hours and would have happily stayed for another hour. The service was the best I have ever experienced. The staff were so attentive and knowledgable about every single aspect of the dishes: where ingredients came from, the Sicilian connection to food, etc. We honestly felt like we learned a lot! I can't even tell you exactly what we ate, but it was all so, so yummy! If you're thinking about splurging on a meal while in Sicily, let it be this... and make sure to get one of the tasting menus!

Yelp
Hands down the best restaurant in/near the Palermo area. A creative celebration of Sicilian cuisine in a unique setting. Chef Tony is a star and his name will likely show up on the 50 Best list soon. We also loved sommelier Andrea who brings to bear his past experience as a mixologist to create a unique wine pairing to the tasting menu. Could not recommend this place more.
