"No-frills Japanese izakaya Ichidai crafted its menu of broiled fish, sukiyaki, and tempura to keep things traditional — that happens to go beautifully with its sake list, which is organized by the small or large carafe or bottle. Don’t miss the Oregon-brewed sake section, available by the 12-ounce tokkuri or in a flight." - Pechluck Laskey

This has been our go to sushi place for the last 15 years, but I'm sorry to say it's really gone down hill. The past few visits we've been served rolls with hardly any fish in them, with tons of rice instead. Not only are they serving less fish, but the prices have gone up as well.

Small place for tastey and traditional sushi. The feel is very Japanese but also not cheesy. The 5-5-5 roll is my favorite!

I recommend making a reservation on Friday's or Saturdays. If bot you may have a wait. But it's worth it. The sushi chef was friendly and skilled. The food is great. Our waitress forgot part of our order and was pretty inattentive but she was slammed so we understood. It is small but seems to always be busy. Overall great atmosphere it isn't loud. The food is worth the higher price as it is always fresh.

Intro - One of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever visited. Too bad it's difficult to find. Food - Extremely good and very authentic. I've been to Japan before and the food served here is identical. Service - Adequate; I'd be lying if I said I adore the service, but I have no complaints. Atmosphere - Charming! I love all the little decorations and it feels very secluded and peaceful. Cost - A tad expensive, but absolutely worth it. One person could expect to pay $20-30 or so. Summary - If you're ever in the mood for Japanese food (regardless of whether it's an outing with a coworker or a date with your fiance), this is one of the best choices in Portland!

What a great place! I've been here several times with my in-laws (it is their favorite Portland restaurant) and every time I'm stuffed! Always, I think I'm ordering something small, but I come away with leftovers! The sushi is great, the tempura is amazing, and the meals are so huge! Also, the owners and the staff are all very friendly.

There's only one reason I can't give Ichidai 5 stars and it is not the food. Everything from the appetizers, mains, and sushi are incredible. Fish is very fresh and clean. Good service, good sake list. It's the building. It's weird and not particularly comfortable or inviting. But I'll be returning, without question.

The best Japanese food I've ever had. I heard the Japanese Ambassador eats here when he's in town, while I can't confirm that, I do believe it. I've been to Japan and this feels truly authentic. They have a great variety of sushi, sashimi and other dishes, and a solid range of Sake. It is always easy to get a table, and well worth the visit.

By far, the best sushi for the price. I try to always order from the specials, they are always amazing. Best I think is Seaweed Salad, Crab Salad (like a party in your mouth) and their Salmon Skin rolls. My family goes here at least twice a month. Highly recommended! Service is always perfect too. I've been there at least 20 times so far, not one complaint. Love it.
