The Icy Cup is the heart of the neighborhood all summer long.
Kids come by for ice cream cones and blizzards all day and into the evening (the place is usually open 'til 9pm).
Parents flock to the Saturday farmer's market here - where you can find anything from vegetables to spices, baked goods, bike repair, vintage trinkets and activities for kids. Most Saturdays a local band entertains the crowd. It is a small but mighty farmer's market.
On Tuesday nights you'll see an informal group that calls itself "West Side Soul" and sings tunes accompanied by an acoustic guitar.
Me, I come for the affogato and these amazing mexican chocolate donuts that I can't get enough of. Have you ever had an affogato? It's delicious hot espresso poured over a cold vanilla ice cream (soft serve, in this case) and it's all I've ever wanted in a coffee ice cream treat morning, noon or night.
When I'm hungry I get the tamales, which are delicious. But the menu has burgers, fries and a few other sandwiches too.
The owner, Pompeyo, bought an old DairyQueen and made it special by connecting neighbors and neighborhood improvement groups. He raised funding to add a beautiful mural, expanded the parking lot with seatings and space for the farmer's market. Converted some grassy areas by the curb into vegetable planting beds. It came to life over the years, and shows no sins of slowing down.
Come for the ice cream, stay for the love of community.
The Icy Cup is closed all winter, sadly, but reopens around the end of March.
