Castro Cafe Sweet Inspiration to Close After Planning Kerfuffle | Eater SF

"The sandwich chain Ike’s Place operates more than 11 locations and is known for its signature sandwiches; city planners cited that fact when determining that serving those sandwiches at Sweet Inspiration under the name Mike’s Place was an attempt to skirt formula retail rules." - Caleb Pershan

Google
They have a great selection of sandwiches. Opting for something vegetarian, I went with the aptly named "Sometimes I'm a Vegetarian" sandwich. "Sometimes I'm a Vegetarian" Sandwich (4.5/5): The pesto, sauce, and the mushrooms delivered great flavor! Just skip the avocado add-on; for $3.50, it was barely there and absolutely not worth the cost. I really wish they offered even more non-vegan vegetarian choices; personally, I don't like the fake cheese or meat. That said, I might come back to try one of their meat options next time.

Google
Excellent sandwich! You would be hard pressed to believe the toasted bread is gluten free. And if you are gf, they take good care of you. Orlando will hook you up, he knows service!

Ray C.

Google
Sandwich was done well. Service was ok, staff needs to be more attentive and not hand sandwich off to the wrong person or stranger. The store was lacking in seating, felt like you were sitting in a storage room because there was supplies stacked everywhere around you. On staff manager was nice, but could be better trained in customer service if they mess up.

Google
First time was awesome! The sandwhich was so bomb and yummy and they carried my Favorite drink and chips there which paired great. Favorite new sandwich spot that I'm glad my dude took me to. I can't eat meat and i was pleased that they had so many different options. Even if it came with meat, on the menu it says just ask them and they can rearrange it but the vegan options they had was enough for me. Overall one of my new favorite places to eat and i can't wait to check out the other locations. My dude also told me about some interesting facts about the menu. A+ for me

Google
Love having an Ike's nearby because their sandwiches are so good!! The portions are a good size - I usually only eat half and have the other half for my next meal, which makes it a bigger bang for your buck. My go-to is the Barry Bonds on Dutch crunch, but I recently tried the KF Chen, and it was also very good though I didn't get enough horseradish in it. Overall, I really like their sandwiches, but I'm more of a plain-Jane - I don't want multiple types of meats, cheese, and sauces. Parking can be tough as it's in a tiny strip mall of a busy intersection, so it's a tight squeeze. It's before downtown, so there isn't a lot of foot traffic - it's not hood, but not downtown, so keep that in mind. For a take out or delivery order, don't pass up Ike's!

Google
For my experience - this is the worst Ikes on Bay area. First time i was here about 2 months ago. Today i gave a second chance to this place and still nothing changed... People are good in there but general atmosphere and quality of sandwiches is bad.

Alejandro S.

Google
First time at this place and I’m am pleasantly impressed. I’m trying Veganuary (Vegan for 1month) and happen to be Gluten Sensitive, so it makes it hard to find options. However this place has lots of vegetarian options which can be turned Vegan, and their Gluten Free bread is really good (Dutch Crunch like) Their quality and amount is very good too. I now have a new favorite place for subs.

Google
Honestly, YUM! This was one of the BEST sandwich places I've ever eaten... there's Just SO MUCH to choose from!! Not to mention the yummy Chips from my Home State Louisiana :) The staff there are so knowledgeable and friendly to everyone who comes in, so a big thank you to Becker!!! He was very accommodating, funny, and friendly!

Yelp
I've been to Ike's Love & Sandwiches and Ike's Lair, so I was curious to see how Ike's Place would compare. It's about three blocks away from the Caltrain station and covered in greenery, giving it a very artsy vibe outside. The sandwich menu and quality feel the same as at Ike's Love & Sandwiches and Ike's Lair, which is a good thing. There are plenty of tables available for dining in, and it's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Mateo. I really enjoyed the sandwich and the garlic spread, so while I usually go for the Dutch crunch, the sourdough bread might be my new favorite at Ike's. This location gets mixed reviews, but I found it to be tasty and service was friendly.

Yelp
My husband and I live walking distance to the Ike's in Burlingame but we actively choose to come to this one instead because the sandwiches are always consistent and the manager here is so kind! Our go to is the Hunter Pence on Dutch crunch.

Yelp
Ike's got Great sandwiches Yes it's pricey but portion is humongous Tuna melt was delish Phone ordered and Sammiches we're ready in 15 mins We took a few paper menus Togo for future reference Small store but got inside seating It is located on corner of strip mall but lots of parking available

Yelp
First time stopping at Ike's and it did not disappoint. Probably the BEST customer service I've received in the area. Everyone behind the counter was so warm, welcoming and friendly. Fast service as well. Lots of sandwiches to choose from! Also lots of yummy chipppy options too. My sandwich was PACKED and sooooo tasty. Fresh, made to order sandwiches! They also have a shared parking lot, which was really nice consider the busy street location of this place. Sooo glad I found Ike's and will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Yelp
Sandwich taste great but the amount meat in the sandwich is lacking is an understatement. Photo below for proof. Severely disappointed since Ike's was one of my favorite sandwich places and dependable.

Yelp
I went there to pick up 3 sandwiches. I called ahead of time and placed my order for pick up and they said it would be ready at a specific time. I got there early and there were a few people waiting ahead of me which I had no problem with. They made my sandwiches promptly after the others and still made it on time. Whomever is working there is extremely organized and efficient. They had music playing while I was in there and I was able to sit and wait. I am sure I could have eaten there as well but I was taking it to go but bravo to the guys that work there cause they pumped out my order and got everything correct! Also the big Vinney was so good! (At least that's what I think it was called)

Yelp
Scoring System: 0-3 Food Quality = 3 0-3 Service = 3 0-3 Ambience = 2 0-3 Cleanliness = N/A 0-3 Likelihood I'll Return = 3 Total divided by 3 = Star rating 11/3 = 3.67 / 4 Ike's has great sandwiches for both vegetarians and omnivores alike. They either discontinued the Carmel apple lollipops or forgot them in both our orders.

Eleanore D.

Yelp
Holy cow. Can't remember the last time a sandwich tasted sooo good. I got the Paul Rubens on Dutch crunch. Best Dutch crunch I've ever had. Perfect to get that crunch and sweetness but also be able to bite through. Holy cow... why have I not been eating here weekly??
google avatar

Ezen C.

Yelp
Not my kind of sandwich. I had high hopes given the review. I ordered the Spiffy Tiffy for pickup and I thought it was just odd. It wasn't that tasty, chicken was dry, and overall I likely won't be back anytime soon. Service was fine. There's parking available outside. Can't speak to the ambiance since I did pickup.

Yelp
I have been to this location three times and two out of the three I think I was helped by the Manager or one of the Owners. A very happy, friendly and welcoming guy. His positivity alone is worth 5 stars because you feel your business is appreciated and he enjoys interacting with customers. Even with a mask on (which I appreciate the health aspect) you feel his smile and joy. Ike's locations are hit and miss. This location gives generous portions and the rolls are fresh. My wife had a Spiffy Tiffy on a Dutch crunch roll and she said it is the best Ike's sandwich that she has enjoyed. I had the Steve Young on a soft roll and mine was pretty good too. I ate mine so fast I forgot I wanted to take a picture first. Definitely patronize this business for fresh, generous portions and friendly outstanding service. I live in the East Bay but will stop here on my way home when my wife or I crave an Ike's sandwich.

Yelp
I can't say enough about how this business knows consistent quality and the manager knows customer service . I don't usually eat sandwiches but when I do, it's always Ike's on 3rd avenue . Their sandwiches are served hot and loaded with whatever you asked for ! I went today and the place was packed. They were late with called in orders and the manager actually apologized and comped us the next sandwich. Totally unexpected and very grateful .

Yelp
Stopped by and grabbed a sandwich on the go. It was really good. The amount of meat and sauce was perfect. They say a messy sandwich is a great sandwich so how can you go wrong? I had their special bread and the crispy crunch definitely enchanted the sandwich. I'd come back and try some of the other options another time.
google avatar

Darshana S.

Yelp
Delicious options for vegans and vegetarians. This location has great customer service as well.

Pavan K.

Yelp
Update Food was always good. I guess my initial bad experiences could have been personnel issues or just them having a bad day. I have ordered more than 15 times since then and haven't had any issues.

Lysander Diego M.

Yelp
Never again. Verbal, written or text. Doesn't make a single difference. Lettuce every time I don't want it!
google avatar

Connie N.

Yelp
Bill Walsh with buffalo sauce is top tier. Go-to sandwich spot in San Mateo that never disappoints and everyone's always friendly
google avatar

Katharine Y.

Yelp
This is definitely not your typical Ike's sandwich shop, if I may this location is better due to the quality of meat, size of sandwiches, and the variation or combination of toppings that doesn't need to pay extra for like avocado and bacon. ( please don't have any idea to over charge) Which makes this location unique to orders. The service is quite quick. Well organized chips and soda stand very clean and they even offer pineapple slushy... the best yet. Will definitely coming back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid sandwiches, lots of options, veggie friendly, fast service, and a very local sandwich shop kind of vibe. Their sandwiches can be a bit pricey, totalling $15-$18 each, however, they are pretty filling. Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Value: 2/5 Overall: 3.5/5

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches, efficient service, and convenient location near the freeway. We stopped here for lunch and were able to find easy street parking a block away on a Sunday afternoon. Guy at the counter greeted us when we came in, took our order efficiently, and our sandwiches were ready in less than 10 minutes, and they were probably some of the best Ike's sandwiches I've ever had. There were a few tables to sit at inside, although it's not a huge location. Definitely would recommend this place!

Yelp
A few of us ordered sandwiches for take-out for lunch. We ordered a "Jon Lum" (basically sliced ribeye with cheddar, bacon, and onion rings (and I added BBQ sauce)), the "Backstabber" (halal chicken, marinated artichoke hearts, caesar and provolone), a made to order ham sandwich with all the fixings, and a made to order hot pastrami. We ordered at 11:15am and then drove to pick the order up. When we arrived at 11:30am, all of the orders were made. They were all made in accordance with the specific requests. I know this may seem trivial, but it seems like whenever I'm in a group and people order sandwiches, people always have specific requests (i.e., "I want mustard and not the special sauce," "I want light sauce," "I want peppers but no onions," etc.). I'm not criticizing; but it definitely is a fact of life. So the fact that Ike's got everything right, and also made the sandwiches quickly was a huge plus. With respect to the sandwiches themselves, the french bread roll in particular was nice and soft but not soggy (i.e., it didn't overly soak up all of the ingredients in the sandwich). The staff was also friendly. Overall, this was a good lunch experience and folks in our office would definitely do it again.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are so tasty. I love the variety and ease of ordering. We dropped in on a Thursday around 11:30am and they weren't too busy. I got the ménage a trois (chicken, honey, honey mustard, BBQ sauce, and cheese) and subbed fried chicken for the regular chicken (~$12). All the sandwiches also come toasted and with dirty sauce (garlic aioli), lettuce, and tomatoes. The sandwich was ready in about 5-10 minutes and was hot and delicious. The chicken was tender and juicy and the sweetness of the honey and the honey mustard balanced the tang of the BBQ sauce. The sandwich was large but so good I ate it all. Unfortunately no indoor or outdoor dining during COVID so more of a takeout kind of place now.
google avatar

Ella C.

Yelp
We always come back to this Ike's location. Prices are still good for what you get and the consistency of the sandwiches is what brings us back every time. The staff are always friendly and pick up is a breeze. Even when we have to wait a bit, it's because this location is packed which is a good thing others enjoy is as much as we do. We don't eat there but it's nice they offer tables for those that do or to sit and wait. We also love the loyalty cards they offer which keeps us coming back.

Yelp
I had two more vouchers that I bought off Groupon and since I was in the area, I thought I'd use them before it expires. The male cashier (possibly even the manager) was super accommodating and friendly. I wasn't aware that the Groupon was one per visit but he allowed me redeem both at once. I also checked in for a free dole whip as well! I ordered Ménage A Trois for my bf and I usually get Matt Cain as my go to sandwich but I decided to try something new and went for Spiffy Tiffy. And you have to get it on Dutch crunch! Ménage A Trois is my bf's favorite. Personally I am not a fan. A bit of sweetness mixed with bbq sauce. Spiffy Tiffy - pretty good and creamy from the avocado. I love the addition of pesto. Everything within it mixed well together. Sadly I forgot to add jalapeños but I usually add it for a bit of spiciness. Both sandwiches were loaded with toppings and they never skimp out. It's super fulfilling and I can only eat half of the sandwich and save the rest for dinner.
google avatar

Cynthia H.

Yelp
Hit the spot for my sandwich craving! We got the Spiffy Tiff and menage a Troi - the latter was a safe choice since I had tried it before and loved it. Between these 2, I still prefer the menage a Troi even though the Spiffy Tiffy has avocado (I think it's the sauce)! Definitely get the dutch crunch and come with an empty stomach since the portions are huge! I checked in for the free dole whip but unfortunately did not enjoy it - it tasted too artificial :(
google avatar

Marlee M.

Yelp
After coming home from a long trip, I asked my husband to pick up an Italian salami sandwich for me. What a disappointment! There were only a few slices of salami, and the sandwich was dry, just bread. I threw almost more than half away. Next time I crave a sandwich, Mr. Pickles in San Mateo is my choice.
google avatar

Jaya B.

Yelp
First time trying out Ike's since moving to the Bay Area! Can't say enough great things about this spot. I told the cashier it was my first time there and the menu overwhelmed me, he took his time and made some recommendations based on my preferences. Any of Ike's sandwiches can be made vegetarian and they also offer gluten free bread. The choices are abundant and the combinations are truly original. I got the Matt Cain on French bread with all turkey: turkey, godfather sauce (horseradish mayo-ish sauce), provolone with lettuce and tomato. AMAZING! Would definitely get it again. My boyfriend got the Steve young (beef meatballs bacon marinara sauce) on sourdough and said he would definitely get it again. We couldn't even wait until we got home and devoured these sandwiches in the car.
google avatar

Benjamin H.

Yelp
Unfortunately was served a sandwich with some questionable sauce. It was either old or made incorrectly. Called to notify them that the sandwich was inedible. They did not offer to fix it, which they are not obligated to do. However, I was just excited for an Ike's sandwich. Aside from that the store seemed clean and the staff was friendly. I could just be salty right, but definitely not as salty as that sauce on my sandwich.
google avatar

Nissa Z.

Yelp
I've never met a sandwich I didn't like at Ike's. So many options to choose from and they always have this belly nice and full. And you know the Caramel Apple Suckers are a nice ending lol. Customer Service is always amazing and friendly!
google avatar

Teresa N.

Yelp
Great service, I remember the cashier was being super helpful especially on my first couple of visits there. Since they had a huge variety on the menu, I had a hard time deciding what to get cos everything sounded so good but the cashier was really patient and helpful explaining their menu to me. Now I know my go-to sandwich is the Matt Cain on Dutch crunch, love how it has different kinds of meat in it, and of course the yummy sauce.
google avatar

MR D.

Yelp
This location sucks. Always hit or miss. I think I'm done wasting y hard earned money on a bad sandwich. Won't be back!

Rick G.

Yelp
Picked up a Steak, Mushroom and Cheese sandwich. It was hot and delicious. Would definitely order again.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Ike's does such a great job with the sandwiches. I appreciate that it has a good bread to filling ratio. More importantly, they put a decent amount of sauce, which adds to the flavor and makes the sandwich not dry at all. Can't wait to try all the sandwiches!
google avatar

Tanya T.

Yelp
Service was great and quick. Price was perfect for our tasty veggie sandwiches. Our sandwiches did not disappoint. Dutch Crunch was perfect and so were the filling to these amazingly popular sandwiches. Definitely returning!
google avatar

Karina B.

Yelp
We love this place so much! It's a must stop place for sandwiches and we have to get it anytime we come to visit Cali. Today we got 5 sandwiches to go before our flight back to Maryland; 2 going home for thanksgiving, menage tois, Paul reubens, and a tiny soprano. 2 of them are actually for my in-laws (who are in MD) because they also love this place. Really any sandwich is delicious and make sure to get the Dutch crunch bread. Wish they would open a place in Maryland cause we would be there all the time.
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
I've given this place so much of my money.... Cause it's sooo good! I usually get the Matt Cain (roast beef) or jayme sirwich (fried chicken). On a Dutch crunch roll. The sandwiches are big and service is super fast. It's my go to sandwich place. The only con is parking. That parking next next door is tiny, try street parking. And they are not on UberEats which is a bummer cause I would order a TON more. Now I have to get my Ike's from the Burlingame store.
google avatar

Melody Y.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with Ike's! They've been a Bay Area staple for quite some time now, and the sandwiches never disappoint. I love that they give you a caramel apple lollipop with each order too :) I've tried a few of their popular ones over the years - Ménage A Trois, Matt Cain, Spiffy Tiffy - but my all-time favorite sandwich is the Lincecum. The combination of avocado, Havarti, ham, turkey, bacon + lettuce, tomatoes, and their dirty sauce on Dutch crunch = perfection. No matter what sandwich you get, ALWAYS choose Dutch crunch for your bread! If you're ever in the mood for a quick but hearty meal, Ike's is definitely the right choice. The portions are huge and the prices are reasonable! Oh, and you can check in on Yelp for a free dole whip.

Jon C.

Yelp
Why is it so hard to put onions on a sandwich?? I asked for "a lot of onions" because "extra" wasn't working....i got what you'd expect on a normal sandwich....like 4 onions ‍
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
(1pm) The environment was really uplifting as soon as you walk in. There was only 3 people working but one specific employee was really creating that fun and welcoming feel! We took our food to go but even the wait was super quick :) Parking is very limited so be mindful but overall experience was very nice

Innessa G.

Yelp
I just like Ike's place. The best one is in Santa Rosa though. The dirty souce is a bomb.
google avatar

Madeleine J.

Yelp
I'm always satisfied with my customer service and sandwich at Ike's. The employees are always friendly and willing to answer questions, and their signature dirty sauce and Dutch crunch bread never disappoint. My go to is the Randy Hahn, but nothing on their menu disappoints.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
'Extra dirty', generous, messy, balanced, fresh and delicious. I called in a pick up order of an Eric Wright and a Matt Cain to grab mon our way out of town. As usual, they were ready and fresh within 15 minutes when I walked in the door. These are not your average subs or hoagies. These are fully-loaded bread meals. Each sandwich is enough to feed two people or at least have half for a second meal. Our Eric Wright (hold the jalapeño) had turkey, bacon, cheddar and pesto on sourdough with lettuce, extra dirty. The Matt Cain had roast beef, turkey, salami, godfather sauce, provolone, lettuce, red onion and banana peppers on french bread, extra dirty. Fresh bread, freshly sliced meats and cheeses, toasted perfectly - that's Ikes. The staff here are always hustling and cranking out sandwiches all day and still make the effort to warmly greet guests and patiently Answer questions. The staff and sandwiches make this a five-star Ike's!
google avatar

Camille M.

Yelp
Started going to this place after I got Groupon deals ($17 for 4 coupons each worth $7 a sandwich each.) Yummy & cool names too! The vegetarian sandwiches are great! I still eat meat; Didn't Expected the vegetarians ones would be delicious. ;)
google avatar

Will T.

Yelp
Ordered the Lincecum but it was very salty, not sure if it was the ham that was the culprit. and expected the bacon to be crispy but was very limp. Also ordered the bella but did not expect the chicken to be shredded, pulled chicken. It had a nice smokey flavor to it, but it was veeerry dry and tough. Will probably come back but try different sandwiches next time.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
They staff is so friendly and attentive. In All my visits my sandwich did not disappoint. It hit the spot every time. My go to is the Linceum. It's always fresh and flavorful. The combination of ingredients complement each other. This is my destination for a sandwich in San Mateo.
google avatar

Ad W.

Yelp
Went over to Ike's to pick up a pastrami sandwich. I expected to get meat on a pastrami sandwich but as you can see on the pics below we barely got any meat. We patronize Ike's quite often but never had a bad experience like this with our sandwiches. Don't get me wrong service was great but unfortunately I didn't get what I paid for on my sandwiches this time.
google avatar

Ada K.

Yelp
We were on our way to a soccer game and googled sandwich shop nearby. Ike's came up and so we tried it. The best sandwiches ever!!! We are definitely going back. Staff was friendly and the sandwiches hearty, fresh and so delicious!
google avatar

Keerthi C.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich place in the world! No one makes a great sandwich like Ike's. I always had a great experience by sticking with the standard menu and not the specials which they display sometimes. Not every guy who works there can make it and most of the times they fuck it up and hence reducing a star. Go here hungry as the sandwich is kinda jumbo :). Spiffy Tiffy, Matt Cain, Melange ó Trois, Adam Richman...every sandwich is epic.
google avatar

Alyssa G.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are filling and the ingredients were fresh! I ordered a Bella and a were just friends. The freebie add ins are really nice additions. There's also lots of variety on the menu. But here's the rub- 2 sandwiches were 25$ and some change. Plus our chicken today was so dry and a weird texture. Almost like it had been frozen and microwaved. Aside from the price and the weird chicken it was a decent sandwich. The workers didn't even add in our two lollipops in the bag that are usually included. Also the parking lot was a nightmare. No open stalls and about 15 guys hanging out in the bed of a truck by the convenience store. I still like Ike's but this location was just "eh".
