Il Casaro Pizzeria & Mozzarella Bar - Castro Location

Had the best lunch in SF on Christmas Eve. All food was so tasty and made with the freshest of ingredients. We had the margarita pizza, the diavalo pizza and the calamari antipasti, and for dessert the raspberry pancotta and the chocolate cannoli which were absolutely delectable. The food was served with spicy chillies and an Italian chilly oil - I bought a bottle of it to take back. Service was top notch. Must eat here if you are in Little Italy.

100% must try! The sauce is so unbelievable and everything we ate was extremely good. One of best Carbonara’s I’ve ever had and the Prosciutto pizza was perfect in every way. The atmosphere was also authentic and staff was extremely nice. Can’t wait to come back.

UPDATE - June 2023: Came here for dinner on a Saturday night around 6:30pm with no reservation and was seated promptly. Ordered the Fettuccine Bolognese and the Broccoli & Salsiccia pizza and some drinks. The food came out super quickly and it was SO good. I was honestly really impressed by the taste - it was on par (if not better) than another Italian restaurant in Hayes Valley that always has a ridiculously long wait-list. It is a little bit more casual than A Mano but honestly I kind of appreciated that. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good Italian place in the area! --- I've dined in and ordered delivery from Il Casaro - both times have been amazing. The burrata and eggplant parmigiana are my personal favorites, but everything has honestly been great. It travels quite well for delivery so if you're not comfortable dining in just yet, it's definitely a viable option. (FYI - When I dined in, all staff were wearing masks and the front door was open for ventilation.)

Nice Italian restaurant in the Castro. I’ve always passed by the one in North Beach which used to be the Steps of Rome, my favorite late night hangout. However, I was pleased to discover that they had another location closer to where I live. My first time here so I ordered an appetizer of fried calamari and the Pizza Calabrese. The calamari was fresh and fried just right, not too greasy and it came with a tasty creamy dip (which I wished they had served more of) and 2 slices of lemon. The pizza wasn’t bad but it lacked flavor like something was missing. Well, I didn’t pay much attention at the time but that something was tomato sauce which it didn’t come with. I like tomato sauce and lots of it on a pizza. I suppose this one is like a pizza Bianca (no sauce, just cheese and toppings). I was a bit disappointed that it only had a few leaves of basil on the whole pie. Overall, the pizza wasn’t necessarily bad, it just could’ve had more flavor imo. I think next time I’ll order a pizza Margherita or a pizza Diavola. The service was wonderful. It was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. My server, Britanny, was very nice (and cute!) and made dessert recommendations. Opted for the panna cotta which is like a flan in its presentation but tastes vaguely like cheesecake but sweeter. And it’s denser than flan and is served with fruit and a raspberry sauce. It’s made with cream and gelatin and is quite refreshing after eating heavy food. I would absolutely come here again for Neapolitan style pizza. The only problem is parking in the area sucks.

Good happy hour prices with a convenient location near many muni and bus stops. Friendly staff with warm and helpful customer service towards everyone, not just the patrons at the restaurant. The pizza was delicious and the tiramisu was the perfect end to a lovely meal.

Nice, cozy restaurant with generous portions! Calamari was beefy and delicious, the pizzas were tasty and had a healthy amount of toppings. Amazing service from our server, her positive and cheerful attitude made our night even better. Thanks to all! :)

Somewhat of a letdown compared to the original outlet in North Beach. While this location on Church is larger and has a wider menu and drinks selection, the food (most importantly the pizza) is not up to par. The pizza crust is not done right. A tad soggy and chewy in center when it should be crisp. Comparing identical pizza orders, only thing I can pin down to is technique. Watching the crew work the large red oven, he seems to lift the pizza very often, and sometimes even leaving the pizza peel under the pizza when it cooks. Secondarily, front of house needs a little improvement. I watched our orders sit on the service counter for over 5 mins before someone picked it up and brought it over. That cannot help.

Tasty neopolitan-style pizza at a reasonable price becomes the best deal in the city on Tuesdays. $18pp all-you-can-eat-pizza: one pie per person at a time. Great, fast and friendly service and a very hot pizza oven. Especially recommend the bufalina moz & funghi ones.

Look, the Castro is big enough to accommodate more than one casual pasta restaurant, but I have to admit something. I liked Pasta Panino on 18th better (review: https://yelp.to/ixgTDwUQEH). Now I know Il Casaro has North Beach cred, but there's something just a little excessive about the dishes here. Let's just call it the 'muchness' factor. I stopped by on an early Thursday evening when there was a huge Italian family taking up two gigantic tables. I sat by myself in the opposite corner of the restaurant. I decided to have the $12 Insalata Caesar, a bed of trimmed romaine dominated by fresh Parmesan shavings, a trio of good size anchovies, and an eggy dressing (photo: https://yelp.to/xV-bDySgkx). Despite the excess of cheese, I liked the authenticity of the salad. Amazing! The pizza was right on target/. My bf loved it so much, he ate the entire pizza! Well I got one piece, lol!

went ~7:30 PM on Wednesday and there was a couple of people there, but still there were lots of places to sit. The staff was friendly. Overall food was on the saltier side. We got the: - il casaro pizza: 3.5/5 decent pizza but was a bit salty. Tasted pretty good with the red pepper flakes. - malfadine boscaioli: 2/5 the sauce didn't feel rich, something just felt missing in the dish. Still finished the bowl but had to add in red pepper flakes.

THIS PLACE WAS YUMMY. Crust was delicious and I literally never say that. I had a white pizza with basil and tomatoes and cheeese but especially ricotta and I was in heaven. Apparently I didn't take a picture of mine though. The broccolini and salsiccia was goood too (pictured here). Sausage is heavy but that's a me problem. Tiramisu for dessert was light and lovely. They give you Calabrian peppers if you ask and I LOVE those. Also hot oil on the table. Server was really helpful. Place wasn't too busy on a Saturday night but I don't know why. Interior is warmly lit. There are booths and tables in the front, small tables in the back closer to the bar. Will be back for everything. I went with an Italian who also loved the place--so must be good! Haha. We just wish there was an eggplant pizza option.

I've been wanting to try Il Casaro for a while, and finally got the chance to do so. I came in around 2-3pm for a very late lunch, and the restaurant was completely empty except for our table. We ordered a Funghi and Calabrese pizza to share. The Funghi could have used more mushrooms and I wasn't really a fan of the cheese on top. It seemed to flake off the pizza in large chunks, and it wasn't completely melted. The Calabrese pizza was good, but nothing about it really stood out to me. The dough/crust of the pizzas was pretty standard for a thin-crust pizza. I'm glad I tried this place, but it's not somewhere I'd actively seek out again.

Came for happy hour. Food was just ok. Service was great. We ordered: Prosciutto pizza - better if the two pizzas Mushroom pizza Tiramisu - had a blueberry on it which was a first for me.

The pizza here is really great, the crust is amazing. But do not order the lasagna! The photos don't look good, but everything else is so good we figured we would try it anyways and we left the majority of it on the table.

Delicious!!! My parents and I ordered pizzas from Il Casaro tonight and HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The thin crust is amazing and perfect. The prosciutto arugula pizza is to die for! My parents ordered the funghi and also the broccoli/sausage one. The pizzas are not oily and the ingredients are high quality. I can't wait to order from them again! Next time we will have to dine there in person :)

Don't assume it's on Castro street, it's not, it's actually on Church street, so it can get confusing by name alone. II Casaro Pizzeria & Mozzarella Bar - Castro is the little brother of the North Beach location in Little Italy. What really got our attention is when one of mi Amigas wrote a detailed review on the Happy Hour! And let me tell you how amazing this place is... We decided 4pm on Sunday would be perfect, but what we didn't expect is how we would have the entire outdoor patio to ourselves! Warm greetings and the choice to sit anywhere makes me happy! I think even the great Andrea Bocelli would smile... We order Calamari, Diavola Pizza, Polpette al Sugo with Bread and Sides. Mango Margarita, Gazzosa, and later Aperol Spritz. The later as my dessert drink and all from the Happy Hour Menu. Everything seemed to come out quicker than expected, but hey it was all pipping hot, fresh and ready to be had! Cin! Cin! Delicious! I tried everything, however the thin crust Diavola Pizza had to be my favorite. The drinks all on point! And to end a perfect Sunday we decide to split a Tiramisù for dessert. And let me tell you it was wonderful, so wonderful that it almost brought back memories to my days in Florence, Italy! Almost! In the end, I highly recommend II Casaro Pizzeria & Mozzarella Bar - Castro even over it's big brother! It's more chill and not as crowded on Sunday Happy Hour! Literally one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The pizza is always good and I love their spaghetti cacaio & pepe. I've been maybe a handful of times and it's a must try. In the times I've came, I didn't make reservations but I always think making a res is a good idea. The service is always so kind and attentive. They always help me with the menu. I've tried their Diavola pizza and spaghetti cacaio & pepe, both were so delicious. The Diavola is similar to a pepperoni pizza, so tasty and hits the spot. It came with 6 slices. I looove a cacaio e pepe pasta. The serving is generous and I had leftovers.

Came here on a Friday night with a reservation. I really enjoyed that this place had an outdoor heated patio! They also allowed dogs. 5/5 service: it was an ok busy night but only one waiter, he was so kind and he seems really busy but everything came out fast and he was great! 3/5 food: to be honest I thought the food was just ok. We got the burrata and calamari for appetizers. Burrata was not good but calamari was great. Got a bunch of different pizzas too which were just ok. Also got pasta like the ciao e pepe and carbonara. Carbonara was pretty good but not amazing. 3/5 drinks: got a few cocktails that were too bitter and not sweet. I liked that the patio was very heated and the ambiance was nice, good place to get dinner in the castro!

What a great find! We stumbled into Casaro Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar while we were walking by and saw they had a woodfire pizza oven. We got there in time for the daily happy hour (4-6 pm), which was amazing! $5 off all pizza, $10 fresh burrata, and drink specials. The inside of the restaurant has a great vibe - very clean with an open kitchen, which I always love. We got a seat in the bar area and ordered drinks within minutes of sitting down. They have wine, mixed drinks, and beer. We each ordered beer and split the fresh burrata and a pizza. The burrata did not disappoint. It was served with fresh flatbread from the oven. The pizza was also delish! The pizza oven is right behind the bar, so you can watch the pizza-making process. The pizza oven is wood-fired, which is super cool and they use the wooden paddles to put the pizza in and out of the oven. I dig the vibe and will definitely visit again.

decent neighborhood italian spot. we went during happy hour and got the lasagna, pizza and broccolini. Nothing extraordinary but decent food and prices, especially during happy hour. the pizza crust was a little soggy

Food - thin-crust prosciutto pizza was perfectly balanced. Nice crust and zesty sauce that did not overwhelm. The misto salad was pretty extraordinary and plenty for two! Service - we sat at counter which we rarely do when we dine out but it was just the two of us and it was SO fun! Staff was attentive and cordial. They were busy but friendly. Location- excellent - we took Muni and got off the train at Church. Super convenient and love the energy of this interection.

10/10 I would come here again. The pasta and calzone was so fresh and the portion is great to share service was great as well!

I had a glass of the Barbera and the Marinara pizza (it features anchovies and olives). Barbera: served far too warm - basically at room temperature of the restaurant, which is pleasantly warm, but far warmer than ideal serving temperate for red wine. I would have transferred an ice cube from my water to the wine, but in true European style the water was also served at room temp and without ice. Marinara pizza: never again! Context: a Spanish tapas restaurant a couple blocks away (Canela) has an appetizer that features anchovies (BOQUERONES; imported white anchovies in vinegar, olive oil, citrus segments) -- OMG I would never have thought that I would recommend anchovies, but their Boquerones are fantastic! Based on Canela's fabulous dish, I was excited to order the Marinara pizza here. VERY bad idea. You could have replaced the anchovies with 1 centimeter wide lines of table salt -- they tasted like salt and not at all like fish. The restaurant was generous with the olives on this pizza -- which were also VERY salty. I ended up removing most of the anchovies and most of the olives - so I paid $21 for what ended up being a margherita pizza that was too salty even after I removed the offensive anchovies and olives. I sat at the bar; service was attentive. But when I was asked how it was and I crinkled my nose and mentioned how salty it was, the response was along the lines of "yes, anchovies are salty!" Thanks to Canela, I know anchovies can be amazing! But not at this restaurant. I will not be back.

The first time I've ever been to Il Casaro was at their original location in North Beach. I thought it was great! We decided to go to the one in the Castro but it was a bit underwhelming. Still need to share the food aesthetics and review though. What we ordered: 1) Prosciutto Pizza w/ Mushrooms - the crust was on the soggy/wimpy side. Was expecting it to be crisp. There was a good amount of toppings though! ($22) 2) Bucatini Amatriciana - have always made our own at home so wanted to try someone else's version this time. It was super salty and super al dente ($17) With that being said, I wouldn't say to skip on Il Casaro because they do have good food. It's just that the North Beach location provided better food and service. Also, we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time lolol. Maybe they were just having a bad day.

I do enjoy the pizza. The crust is quality and the sauce is amazing. Disappointed I've gone several times and had the tip inflated on several occasions. Although the food and service is great, make sure to take a picture of your signed receipt and make sure it matches your statement. I'll continue to come back because the food is great.

I came back to this restaurant for a Saturday night dinner with family, and after luckily finding a spot immediately in the otherwise crowded restaurant, we had an amazing dinner. I ordered the spaghetti cacio e pepe, which was so deliciously creamy and cheesy, with a fairly large portion size. The lasagna was great as well, with a rich bechamel sauce but slightly smaller portion size. Both the calamari and brussel sprouts were crispy and paired well with the spicy aioli dipping sauce. The il casaro pizza was probably my favorite -- great combination of mushrooms, prosciutto and mozzarella. If you're in a larger group, I'd order several items like these to share, as many of the dishes compliment each other well! The restaurant itself has a great ambiance, is very well lit and lively especially on a weekend night. It's very family friendly, but also good for date night with a wide selection of drinks and a bar to sit at as well.

We ordered the diavola, calabrese, and broccolini. All the components of the pizza taste great but the execution seemed to be lacking compared to their location in North Beach. Toppings were piled in the middle so the crust was wet and soggy in the middle. The broccolini could have been thrown in the pizza oven to crisp up the leafy ends, but we had no crispy broccolini.

It was okay. Got the rigatoni with mushroom and sausage and it wasn't bad but not sure if i'd return. Received great service from the waitress!!

We loved the food and the overall environment! It was more spacious than their other locations and well designed. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Really great spot for groups. You can't miss with any of the pizza or pasta selections!

This is one of my favorite places for the most unpretentious Italian dinner, just steps from my door. The pizzas are wood fired and the margherita will be cooked neopolitan, unless you ask for well done like we like :) Spaghetti and meatballs are my other go to for a comfort food. (And the tiramisu is amazing here if you have any room!!) Keep in mind this place is tiny, they have liquor but not a full time bartender, so be kind and think simple when you come here, it's back to basics in the best way. The sauce alone- on the pizza and the pasta will take you to Italy in a bite!

Decent neighborhood spot. We had: - Calabrese pizza - good flavor but crust was a little too thick - Carbonara - Brussel sprouts - a little too much balsamic Service friendly and cozy atmosphere. Food is not to die for but I'll probably be back anyways.

Great fresh pasta authentic. In a highly competitive post COVID environment, these guys got it correct. Not cheap but not outrageous. Friendly neighborhood vibe.

This is an only to go review I ordered the diavolo pizza. It's nice and has a good amount of spice. The 2nd time was spicier. The 2nd time we got to go was burned slightly so it had more of a burnt flavor. They are quite fast for to go so if you want some solid pizza, I would recommend it

The pizza was my favorite - the crust is thin and crispy, with the perfect amount of char and crunch, while the toppings are fresh, flavorful, and expertly combined. Everything we had was excellent, each dish had ingredient that were carefully selected and expertly balanced. Although we were seated outside, the staff was so accommodating to move heaters near us. The staff also knew everything about the food and the ingredients, and made ordering a breeze.

FOOD Love it! The pizza was really yummy. We came about a month ago and I still dream of it. The calamari is also very good. We got a Margherita pizza and a Broccoli and Salsiccia pizza. They were both really great choices, and the menu itself has many amazing options! DRINKS The drinks are yummy and I was pleasantly surprised to see a limoncello drink! They also have flavors for different drinks (margaritas, mules, etc) so I got a strawberry flavored one! SERVICE The service was very attentive and helpful. The server and host were both really welcoming, down-to-earth, and kind. Our food came out with the perfect amount of time, and they were also attentive with our drinks. AMBIANCE/SEATING It's very cozy and nice. You can come dressed casual, but also a bit elevated as well. We were sat immediately and there weren't many people there, so it was intimate and pleasant. OVERALL The food is all so tasty! The drinks are yummy and refreshingly different as well. Would definitely come back!

Truly authentic mainly Southern Italian. Everything is good. Wood fired pizza oven, homemade ingredients: everything checks out.

Pre-pandemic, I was a frequent fan of their excellent Italian specialties, great service, and reasonable prices. However, my last in-person experience and recent take-out order suggest confirm that they've slipped considerably. The rigatoni was undercooked, almost crunchy. The portions were small, especially the under-dressed Caesar salad, and the eggplant polpette--once a favorite--were flavorless and starchy. Most disappointing were the "cannoli," resembling the real thing only by the pastry itself. Instead of the rich blend of sweetened ricotta studded with chocolate chips in its past life, these were only filled with dollops of runny whipped cream drizzled with chocolate sauce. Only the pizza lived up to our expectations of what was once a "go-to" place.

Amazing crust. 2 pizzas are a lot for 2 people but still tastes just as good the next day. The calabrese and broccoli salsiccia don't have tomato sauce. Calabrese: looks spicy but is very mild. The oil makes it a bit messy to hold. Fresh toppings so it's better eaten day of. The "sausage" topping is more of a sauce so if you are looking for a meat pizza probably get something else. Broccoli salsiccia: good amount of sausage topping and broccoli isn't overwhelming. Not too salty.

the best- our "go to" place whenever we're in SF. Not just about pizza, their oven roasted Brussels are top notch.

If you want some pizza and wine you will be satisfied. The host is super nice and friendly. The back patio is large has lots of heat lamps for when it's cold out. I would pass on dessert and cocktails. Note that they do not have GF pasta or GF pizza. If you're gf try the salads. Definitely Skip cocktails and coffee drinks. We ordered 3 drinks and only one came out correctly. The amaretto coffee didn't have coffee lol - it was a cold transparent cocktail in a martini glass...... the Irish coffee (we expected hot coffee Irish whiskey cream and sugar) was presented as iced coffee and baileys... seems to be the staff is not trained on drinks - have to admit that it was the last hour of service and perhaps the bartender was not working...they tried to fix it and brought coffee with milk foam and whiskey, and packets of Extra (artificial sweetener) on the side....Not sure why they gave us sweetener instead of putting sugar. The tiramisu was ordinary. That said the patio was cozy and serene, the service was friendly, and we've come a few times and always enjoyed the pizza and wine. Stick to what they do well and enjoy. The interior is also cozy.

Calamari was excellent. I loved the spicy tomato sauce. I would come here again just for the calamari. Margherita pizza was tasty, but it was a lot wetter than I like my pizza. In fact, I would say a 4in radius from the center was a pizza soup. I do not recommend the Margarita Pizza. Service was very fast and friendly, but the server and the kitchen staff were wearing their masks down over their mouth and chin, completely exposing their noses. That's al very unusual for restaurant workers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The dining area was very clean, as was the bathroom.

WOW!!! A Jewel of a restaurant in the heart of San Francisco, street parking, we found parking in front of the restaurant, the restaurant decorated Italy style it took us back to Italy, the staff service is A++ and they were warm and welcoming, the food is crazy outstanding and the prices for this quality of food is extremely low!!!! Handmade pasta with authenticity and traditional Italian flavors!!!!! Magical

Delivery order included meatballs that were literally raw (see photo) and lasagna that was overcooked and rubbery (maybe reheated in the microwave). Horrible experience. Lean Cuisine would have been better.

Literally the best Italian food in the city. Don't just take it from me - I dated a guy from Rome and this was his favorite restaurant in San Francisco. If that's not enough reason for you to eat here, I don't know what is. We had the Rigatoni al Pesto, the Cacio e Pepe, the Pappardelle con Agnello, and the Gnocchi Bolognese, all of which were out of this WORLD. The pesto was some of the best I have ever had (you can tell it's made in-house with care). My friends who had the Pappardelle and the Gnocchi quite literally licked their plates clean. There are 2 Il Casaro locations, FYI. The one in the Castro (this one) has pizza AND pasta, whereas the one in North Beach primarily just has pizza. Just an FYI when you're choosing which one to dine at!

We've been super excited to try this spot out. Unfortunately I think we might try the north beach spot at some point. Went last night at around 8pm. Waited about 10mins in the front for someone to greet us. Seated quickly after that. Waited another 15mins for someone to come take our order. Half way down the order the waiter mentioned "we don't have any pizza's". I think you should lead with that if it's primarily a pizza spot so we can decide to stay or go. Overall it was a real waste of time for us unfortunately.

The food quality here, it's really going down hill. It's not an authentic Italian restaurant anymore but more like an American Italian place. The gnocchi are not homemade and really mediocre and overpriced. The calamari were soggy, not sure if we got some left over. The potatoes pizza has old warmed up potatoes (del Popolo makes a great potatoes pizza) De Buffalina is very dry and stingy on the cheese. Very disappointing, it was one of our favorite places.

I attended a 40th bicycle club anniversary here a couple weeks ago. There were about 100 people in attendance which was the whole restaurant. They have a nice outdoor area in the rear with sun shading for intimate gatherings. Of all days we had rain in the area but that didn't deter anyones spirit. The food was served buffet style on a long bar. The food was a highlight of the party. Several Italian dishes, pizza's, salads, and appetizers. So incredibly delicious. A slide show with pictures from 1982 to the present was shown. Wow!, I was skinny in those days. The restaurant is very unassuming from the outside with hard to read writing inside the front windows but once inside the staff made one feel welcomed immediately. I'll be back! Parking is on the street with bus service passing by frequently.

I've made 3 trips to SF in the past 3 years and every time I have to stop by IL Casaro. I have had countless pizzas all over the world including Italy itself and I have never had a pizza as simple and as delicious as the one at IL Casaro. The customer service is always very welcoming and warm. As far as I can tell the workers are immigrants who recently moved to the US from Italy which makes the whole experience that much more authentic. The inside of the restaurant has a beautiful stone brick oven and the overall ambiance of the little Italy district in SF is a place you must stop by and more importantly stop by Il Casaro. Love this place with all my heart.

I live nearby this neighborhood gem, so when I'm having a craving for homey and heartwarming Italian cuisine, Il Casaro is a go-to! With a wonderful backyard patio, you can enjoy a bottle of great wine with a pizza or pasta from their great menu. I always love the Calabrese or the prosciutto pizzas. My boyfriend always loves their lasagna. This spot is a great option to add to your rotation. Check them out!

This is one of my family's favorite spots to bring out of towns guests. The service is incredible and you get a quintessential San Francisco vibe without feeling like a tourist. My family loves pizza and vegetarian options so we followed the waitstaff's recommendations of Pizza Margherita, Brussels sprouts, and burrata. Burrata is all the rage right now, so check it out. I'm not a huge fan of soft cheese, but my family loved it.

We had lunch here and ate outside in perfect San Francisco weather! Food and service were excellent. The only downside was that the space where we sat was a little cramped..and one of the tables was very wobbly. Great experience though, would go again.
