Portugal Shines with Eight New One-Star Restaurants

"Located in Funchal, this Two MICHELIN Star restaurant offers exceptional cuisine." - The MICHELIN Guide

"They say that Madeira, the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” is paradise on Earth; we cannot guarantee that, but… dining here is like being in Eden! French chef Benoît Sinthon champions a fresh, flavourful, creative cuisine that celebrates local flavours (From Our Seas, Traditions, Homage to the Atlantic, From the Valley to the Mountain...) by reviving old recipes, reinterpreting them with modern techniques, and using products that underpin his commitment to sustainability (many are organic, from the PortoBay garden). They offer two tasting menus: Terroir Experience (which highlights the island’s own ingredients) and Il Gallo d’Oro Top Experience (offered in either 9 or 12 courses). Suggestions? If you want an even more special experience, book the exclusive “Chef’s Table” or dine on the terrace, which provides a dreamy view. The garlic butter, shaped in a surprising likeness to the bulb itself, is served alongside the typical Bolo do caco bread!" - Michelin Inspector

A truly exceptional fine dining experience — a masterful display of culinary artistry and craftsmanship. It was not only a delight for the taste buds, but also a visual feast, with each course plated in a way that was both creative and sophisticated. The service was flawless, and the wine pairing complemented every dish to perfection. One of the best, if not the best, restaurants in the world — truly deserving of three Michelin stars.

This place is truly worth a visit. Quality of food and cooking is outstanding. The chef is very creative. It is a fun Experience adding to the traditional 12 course Michelin star restaurant sequence they have great bread, butter and olive oil selections. The wine pairing with Portuguese wines is top notch- including 3 local Madeira selections. The atmosphere is a bit stiff but personnel are really friendly. My favorite dishes were the French inspired : foie gras and the coquille st Jacques.

The food was exceptionally presented and the service was excellent. We had the 9 moments and were absolutely stuffed leaving. Many thanks for the wonderful experience!

This was my first time eating at a Michelin star restaurant and it did not disappoint! The taste and presentation of the food was beyond my expectations, and the staff were kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. There was one negative though, and I think it came down to lack of communication/transparency about drink prices. We were asked if we wanted to start the meal with a glass of champagne, and it turned out that the two glasses were over €50 each. If we knew the price of that glass, we would asked for a comparable alternative rather than saying yes. But overall we really enjoyed our experience at this restaurant and the chef was very nice!

This is the most exclusive restaurant I have ever been. Michelin 2 stars. The food is great, I have never seen or tasted such a thing. It was a great experience, especially if you fancy it :-).

My husband and I enjoyed here the 12 course blind tasting menu. We had a pescatarian and the standard menu. The location was lovevely with a beautiful view of the ocean. The service was outstanding and we loved the detailed explanation of all the dishes and wines. The courses were great and had a close connection to the island and local ingredients. However we were missing a variety of different textures and rich flavors, as well as the fancy pottery promoted everywhere on the island. My husband also didn’t got a proper meat course, which was pretty disappointing regarding to the high price of this menu. The desert, which is always my favorite course, wasn’t very outstanding as well. Overall we had a great experience, but I would still say it is a bit overpriced for what is on offer.

I was a bit scared after reading few of the reviews of this restaurant. I can gladly say that this evening exceeded our expectations and we created memories that last a lifetime! We had the top experience with the wine pairing for it. Food was carefully designed and the presentations were beautifull and unique. The wine pairing seriously surprised us for the first time. Usually in michelin star restaurants you can kind of guess what kind of wine you will get, that didnt happen this time and we liked it! Our service was great the whole night. Somelliers and all the staff were friendly, helpfull and professional. Im not sure why few reviews say othervise, maybe they had a bad day themself. For the highlight of the night was the madeira wines we had an honor to try after the menu. If you enjoy madeira wines this place has some absolute gems for you! As i said we enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again!

Yelp
A special meal in an incredible location which checks all the boxes for a 2 Michelin star meal. Il Gallo D'Oro is perched on one of Madeira's countless cliffs. The panoramic windows display the horizon like an IMAX screen. Unfortunately, I believe the sun sets on the other side of the island but the view is still breathtaking. The service is attentive and sharp. We got the golden journey menu which contained the most courses. Every dish was delicious. I was especially fond of the bread service as the butters -flavored tastefully with port, seaweed, squid ink - were among the most unique and flavorsome I have had in a Michelin starred restaurant. The golden ball felt special and the silky foie gras mousse was particularly enjoyable. The Yuzu dessert shattered my expectation with incredibly well balance sweetness/tartness and the thinnest, flakiest pastry shell. The wine pairing was exciting and immersive, brimming with Portuguese varietals. The sommelier himself was a highlight. Overall if you are looking for a Michelin style experience, Il Gallo D'Oro delivers. I look forward to visiting again, and booking a 7PM seating, if I return to Madeira.

Yelp
First experience with a Michelin starred restaurant. On our visit to Madeira, our hotel also housed a 2-star restaurant. So we decided to try it out. Setting your own expectations is critical for deciding if you are really the type to enjoy this approach to eating. While there is a "cool" factor to going, you don't go to have a filling meal. The service was perfectly performed for 13 courses but that meant a 4 hour meal. Each course was a masterpiece (especially the Golden Ball) but the portions were astoundingly small. Between courses, there's not much to do besides talk and sip wine... but you could easily go through 2-3 bottles if not careful. And the pricing of course was astronomical but what was expected. So while this was an extraordinary event, we won't be going to these types of venues again. We're just not the right kind of people.

Yelp
The best meal on our honeymoon in Spanish and Portuguese islands (Mallorca, lanzarote, fuerteventura, and medeira.) at this well deserved 2-Michelin restaurant by a French chef. If you come here during one of the Fixed menu days, I would recommend: - get a reservation at 7pm so you can score a table at the front row for best view of the garden and ocean. - get the wine pairing. Impeccable Portuguese wine pairing with the food. I had a lot more respect for Portuguese wine after this meal. - get the "golden journey" 6-course menu for at least one of 2 people so you could taste the best dishes on the menu (the three starters that are served in the golden ball). All of the dishes were incredibly put together, without trying too hard yet unique in the combination of flavors. The menu is a departure from the molecular gastronomy or rich/heavy food that often are associated with some of the Michelin star restaurants. Mediterranean/madeiran cuisine in foundation and slightly influenced by Japanese preparation (e.g. Yuzu) My favorites were: - Golden ball course 1: fois gras with rice crisps and sorbet. The sorbet completely softens the richness of the fois gras and renders an exquisite palate and sensation. The rice crisps provided structure and crunch. - blue lobster with caviar. The lobster shines through here, with the most delightful texture and subtle taste. the supporting ingredients are there to enhance rather than compete. The other two dishes of the golden ball (tuna tartare; local squid with mushroom) were also quite exceptional. The service and ambience are fabulous. Definitely an unforgettable meal on an unforgettable island.

Yelp
OKAY SUNDAY BRUNCH This review is only for the Sunday Brunch. While it is quite good, it is certainly not worthy of the one Michelin star that the restaurant proudly possesses. In fact, it's the only restaurant with a Michelin star on the island of Madeira. I suspect the star is awarded based upon the dinner service which is no doubt exemplary. The breakfast buffet featured a small circular table with a nice variety of fresh fruit, a small circular table with a nice variety of pastries, and a straight buffet table with eggs, sausage, bacon, cold cuts, cheeses, etc. It is all quite lovely, but far from fantastic. The bacon was excellent, but the scrambled eggs were soft and a bit runny. The pastries were ho-hum. The view here is stunning and on a nice day many sit outside. Location/View - 5 STARS Decor/Ambiance - 5 STARS Service - 4 STARS Food - 3 1/2 STARS Value - 4 STARS
