"Madeira is often called “paradise on Earth” and the “pearl of the Atlantic”, apt descriptions which are enhanced by a meal at Il Gallo d’Oro, the island’s very own culinary Eden. Here, French chef Benoît Sinthon conjures up fresh, delicious and creative cuisine that showcases the full flavours of the Atlantic, both from the island and its surrounding waters (Atlantic Inspiration, From Our Sea, Mackerel by Benoît Sinthon, From Valley to Mountain etc), reviving old recipes and reinterpreting them through the use of contemporary techniques and ingredients that support his quest for sustainability (many of which are sourced from the PortoBay organic garden). Two tasting menus are available here: Terroir Experience (which champions ingredients from the island itself) and Il Gallo d’Oro Top Experience (that showcases ingredients from different regions around Europe). To make your experience even more special, why not book the chef’s table or dine on the terrace with its idyllic views?" - Michelin Inspector

This is the most exclusive restaurant I have ever been. Michelin 2 stars. The food is great, I have never seen or tasted such a thing. It was a great experience, especially if you fancy it :-).

My husband and I enjoyed here the 12 course blind tasting menu. We had a pescatarian and the standard menu. The location was lovevely with a beautiful view of the ocean. The service was outstanding and we loved the detailed explanation of all the dishes and wines. The courses were great and had a close connection to the island and local ingredients. However we were missing a variety of different textures and rich flavors, as well as the fancy pottery promoted everywhere on the island. My husband also didn’t got a proper meat course, which was pretty disappointing regarding to the high price of this menu. The desert, which is always my favorite course, wasn’t very outstanding as well. Overall we had a great experience, but I would still say it is a bit overpriced for what is on offer.

I was a bit scared after reading few of the reviews of this restaurant. I can gladly say that this evening exceeded our expectations and we created memories that last a lifetime! We had the top experience with the wine pairing for it. Food was carefully designed and the presentations were beautifull and unique. The wine pairing seriously surprised us for the first time. Usually in michelin star restaurants you can kind of guess what kind of wine you will get, that didnt happen this time and we liked it! Our service was great the whole night. Somelliers and all the staff were friendly, helpfull and professional. Im not sure why few reviews say othervise, maybe they had a bad day themself. For the highlight of the night was the madeira wines we had an honor to try after the menu. If you enjoy madeira wines this place has some absolute gems for you! As i said we enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again!

This place is truly worth a visit. Quality of food and cooking is outstanding. The chef is very creative. It is a fun Experience adding to the traditional 12 course Michelin star restaurant sequence they have great bread, butter and olive oil selections. The wine pairing with Portuguese wines is top notch- including 3 local Madeira selections. The atmosphere is a bit stiff but personnel are really friendly. My favorite dishes were the French inspired : foie gras and the coquille st Jacques.

This was my first time eating at a Michelin star restaurant and it did not disappoint! The taste and presentation of the food was beyond my expectations, and the staff were kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. There was one negative though, and I think it came down to lack of communication/transparency about drink prices. We were asked if we wanted to start the meal with a glass of champagne, and it turned out that the two glasses were over €50 each. If we knew the price of that glass, we would asked for a comparable alternative rather than saying yes. But overall we really enjoyed our experience at this restaurant and the chef was very nice!

This is the best restaurant on the island. 2 stars Michelin and deserved for the wine Pairing and the service which is perfect. The plating and complexity of the dishes are also stunning. The only issue is on some discrepancies between the plate name and the final taste of it. The beef consommé was tasteless. And they announce French cheese or dark chocolate that also doesn’t taste as expected or as it should be when we know this cheese or really good Belgian chocolate. The sommelier are wonderful here and the selection they are proposing is a must. To be recommended.

We had the Top experience with matching wines. The food tasted as fabulous as you would expect at this level, but presentation was more like a work of art with incredible attention to detail. The service team were both very professional and approachable at the same time and not pompous in any way. The real surprise was the wine pairing which played with temperature, balance and contrast which was really interesting and complemented the food perfectly. Altogether - an experience at a really different level.
