The 13 Best Old-School Italian Restaurants In Philly, Ranked

"Il Ghiottone is a small, casual restaurant in Port Richmond with so many Catholic saints on the walls that you’ll lose count. The dining room opens right into the kitchen, so you’ll hear sausages sizzling and a server yelling about the heat coming off the pan before she opens a window and tells you not to touch it (we would never). But it’s the food that you’ll be discussing the next day. Some pasta can be hit-or-miss, but the starters and mains—like the chicken parmesan—are incredible. Pro tip: ask questions about any picture on the wall, and you’ll hear someone’s grandfather’s life story and probably be invited to Sunday dinner at his house. " - candis mclean

The 15 Best Restaurants In Old City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"OId City isn't crawling with red-sauce Italian BYOBs, but Il Ghiottone is one such place. Bring some out-of-towners who are demanding pork chops, ravioli, and tiramisu. It’s pretty inexpensive (pastas and mains cost less than $20), and the staff is so friendly that they'll make your friends rethink everything they saw on It’s Always Sunny. La Locanda Del Ghiottone Review - Old City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"You have some friends visiting from the west coast and all they know about Philadelphia is that it has “a lot of Italian mob restaurants, right?” After you’ve finished rolling your eyes, take them to La Locanda. They serve great red-sauce Italian food, it’s pretty inexpensive, and the staff is so friendly it will make your out-of-town friends rethink everything they saw on It’s Always Sunny. It’s also BYOB, so make sure you pick up a bottle of wine or three on your way there." - Jordan Price

MY FAVORITE!!! Neighborhood hidden BYOB gem! Friendly warm & accommodating staff. My husband & I live nearby so we grab a bottle & spring up. They never turn us away. Homemade, always fresh & served hot! They never disappoint. Come support a family owned local business! We always start the arugula salad with walnuts & mango slices….heaven! My honey ordered the CHOP over spinach & mash potatoes, I had the classic fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. Both entrees came out hot & tasty as always. Unfortunately, We don’t eat seafood because they had many specials with seafood that sounded delicious for Easter. This place never disappoints..

Il Ghiottone in Philadelphia is a hidden culinary gem that offers an unforgettable dining experience. Tucked away in a charming neighborhood, this restaurant specializes in authentic Italian cuisine, and it does not disappoint! From the moment you enter, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a fantastic meal. The menu features a delightful array of classic Italian dishes, with a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients. I highly recommend trying the homemade pasta, which is cooked to perfection and pairs beautifully with their rich sauces. The Osso Buco was tender and flavorful, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail and passion for Italian cooking. The service at Il Ghiottone is exceptional; the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to provide recommendations or accommodate special requests. Their wine selection is impressive, featuring a variety of Italian vintages that complement the menu perfectly. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a cozy spot for dinner, Il Ghiottone delivers an authentic Italian dining experience that will leave you wanting more. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their delicious offerings!

We celebrated our cousin Natalie birthday here this past Sat. 10/5 and I can't say enough good things about the experience! The food was absolutely amazing, each dish was bursting with flavor and thoughtfully prepared. The dessert, in particular, was a highlight; it was simply delicious and the perfect sweet ending to the evening. We were quite a lively group, drinking shots, laughing and chatting loudly as if we were all in our own family dining room. In the midst of our joyful chaos, the hosts were incredibly attentive, ensuring that our needs were met and even joining in on the laughter and taking photos with us. Their warm hospitality made the experience even more special. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking to host or attend a gathering. We'll definitely be coming back for more fun and fantastic food!

A must try! As a new-ish member of Fishtown, I have walk/driven past this restaurant quite a few times. We finally got some cash out and gave it a try. OMG! You have to eat here. The food is so fresh and you can just tell it’s made with love. We each started with a different appetizer. Make sure to listen to the specials! We had the Caprese salad, their special arugula salad (with mango, walnuts, and Gorgonzola), and the special burrata on toast with warm peach slices and balsamic. Those alone were so good. For our mains, we had the gnocchi with bolognese, Porco Ripieno (pork medallion stuffed with prosciutto in a piont noir sauce), and the special Veal with mashed potatoes. Honestly, we were so stuffed after that but if you have room, you have to get their tiramisu. It was surprisingly light and so creamy. The perfect way to end the meal! It’s a small restaurant but, it feels like you are in someone’s home enjoying a great meal. 10/10 would go again! The pricing is super reasonable, so get your cash and GO

We went for my birthday celebration It was everyone's first time going to ll Ghiottone and this cute cozy Italian restaurant did not disappoint. The staff very friendly and accommodating. The food was reasonably priced and delicious. I highly recommend checking out this hidden gem. I will definitely be back Ps my only request is I would like real butter for my bread

Google
Quite honestly, if you don’t come here to try the Tiramisu, you are missing out BIG TIME! The whole meal was extraordinary. The lemon cream sauce with capers over salmon with saffron risotto was succulent and had just the right pizazz. This is a very authentic Italian restaurant. Put it on your list!

Just had an amazing dinner here with my best friend who was craving Italian. I’m sad I didn’t know this was so close to home sooner! This is unlike any other dining experience I’ve had in Philly. It’s family owned and you definitely feel like you’re part of the family when you’re here with how the entire staff treats you. Will be coming back for sure!

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood restaurant! The food is delicious and the staff always treats everyone like family. The prices are so reasonable. My husband & I love going there.

Yelp
Service was great and it was a cute cozy place, the food was ok none of us loved what we got but for the price and the fact that it's a less than 10 minute walk from our house it was fine. We made a reservation and it was relatively busy but probably fine for a walk-in.

Yelp
Love this place. Food is great the service is great, staff is so friendly, it's a win win Everyone enjoyed everything we ate Only wish. Take cards. Cash is a pain

Yelp
The spirt of Giuseppe's Old City's La Locanda Del Ghiottone lives on with the help and love of family. You'll see some favorites from the old at the new including the amazing mushroom crepes. Coincidentally, Il Ghiottone is a single story building as well. A wonderful nod to the old single story restaurant in Old City. Great service as the staff treats you as if you're family. Don't forget your wine at this BYOB as well as cash. The good news is the prices are very reasonable and the food is amazing!

Yelp
We are so glad we stumbled across this gem in Olde Richmond. There is nothing better than the corner sit down Italian restaurant, and in this neighborhood, it is the ONLY ONE. When you walk up to the restaurant, you are greeted with their pretty hanging flowers from their overhang, and outdoor seating options. We ate outside, but got a glimpse of the cozy indoor seating space. It is welcoming and has its own unique spin on the quaint and tacky italian restaurant scene. Our service was great - quick & easy! Loved our waitress. It is a small menu, but they will provide specials that you don't see online. We loved starting with their warm bread and something we never had before...a vegetable puree to dip it in. Let me tell you...it worked! haha. My only critique here is that I would like this a lot more in the winter time, so a lighter sauce (or even olive oil) for the bread would be better suited for the summer months. I thought the portions of the food were great. And as honest as I can be, I felt the food was "ok" - hence the 3 stars, but I am not saying this negatively. We enjoyed our meals, but weren't taken back by them. If someone lived in the neighborhood, I would recommend it, but anywhere outside of the city, I probably wouldn't. I have all intentions of going back myself, because I do want to try more. One thing that I LOVED, was their chicken parm special. They serve it with a side of spaghetti and the chicken is pounded super thin, which is what I think makes a chicken parm great. The sauce wasn't all that, but overall, it was good. They had a creative appetizer offering, which were these mushroom crepes. First time having anything like it, but again, I thought it was good. They are a BYOB too, which is nice and a cost savings. I am excited to head back and try more on their menu.

Yelp
Great food and service. Love the small intimate ambiance. We had a wedding dinner there and loved it.

Yelp
This is a cute, neighborhood, BYOB establishment in Olde Richmond. We can walk from our home, which is nice. The menu is very straightforward, old-school Italian and the servers are friendly and welcoming. They typically have quite a few specials each night, which aren't on the menu. You don't need to get dolled up to go and that, in itself, is a nice change. The food is what you'd expect, nothing exciting but very good. Sadly, some of the dishes we've had have been too bland hence not giving them 4-5 stars. I don't mean this negatively, but their food is what it is, and that's nothing to complain about. If you want a low-key, good Italian meal, this is your spot!

Yelp
Absolutely unbelievable experience. I call and confirm a reservation for dinner, literally spoke to someone and even asked about BYOB, and drive nearly 35 minutes only for them to say they are closed even though it clearly showed on the door that they closed more than an hour later. Don't think I'll ever bother to come back and won't be recommending to people.

Nicole R.

Yelp
I ate here last week and the food was amazing. Just as amazing was the atmosphere and the service. This is a family run business and it shows. They really care about the food and the specials are so unique and delicious. It's BYOB so if you choose to imbibe be sure to bring it with you.

Yelp
Solid Italian food tucked in an unsuspecting place. Was not very busy when I stopped by but made for a nice comfort meal.

Yelp
Excellent, small authentic Italian BYOB! Food was served hot and made to order!! The servers are knowledgeable and efficient!! Definitely recommend and will be back!!

Yelp
The Button (Il Ghiottone) is a genuine family restaurant. The people who run it are absolutely loving. The food is first class. The best of everything. The flavors are exactly as they should be, vibrant and sumptuous. And the portions are the same as Nonna served up. It's a great place for a date or a family outing.

Yelp
5 stars all around! Food, service, atmosphere: all amazing! I'm always shocked this place isn't busier. It's relatively new and they opened during Covid so I feel like not enough people know about it yet but it's so cute and the food is delicious. It's my new go to when I'm craving Italian. The food is very authentic Italian. The freshest pasta and seafood. I always can't wait to hear the specials. Always flavorful and creative. Some of my favorites include: lobster and crab ravioli, orecchiette with sausage and kale, and the mussels. They also make an amazing zucchini vegetable dip with fresh bread for the table. Desserts are amazing too. The tiramisu is light and sweet and can never be passed up. Also it's BYOB and the prices are incredibly reasonable for what you get. They never disappoint!

Great neighborhood spot. BYOB!!! Food is fresh and they have great specials that change often. Portions are large. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
You got alota balls giving the portions u do for the amount of money. I got shrimp pasta tomatoes. Ramen noodles comes with more than you gave us plus your wine sauce is terrible wow. I paid 20 bucks for a shit shrimp and pasta meal that the portion was legit a 5 dollar Chinese food meal. If only that was the problem , but the garlic wine sauce was horrible I knew from jump I should have told my sister I didn't want anything wow I still am baffled at the portion. If I got shrimp and pasta from anywhere else I would have been full halfway through

Yelp
Most subpar fettuccine alfredo I have tasted in my life. And its $23 for literally a kid's sized portion.

Lee Ann H.

Yelp
So much fun. Lovely neighborhood vibe. Food comes out piping hot because it's freshly made.

Ian M.

Yelp
Went here last night with 8 friends for a guys dinner. I can't say enough good things. The penne with spicy sausage was amazing. Once they said they "made" the tiramisu I was sold. Best dessert I've ever had in my life.

Yelp
Delicious! And the staff and owner were so nice. Can't wait to visit again soon We ordered 2 specials with one of the salads on discuss as well. The seafood ravioli and shrimp was flavorful. The rigatoni bolognese and salad were perfect as well. We wanted to get dessert but we're so full. We're saving it for next time we visit. The outdoor area was also very charming with lighting under the trees. There is also outdoor heat but we didn't need it last night. I forgot to take pictures of the food!

Alyson M.

Yelp
A source highly recommended this place to me about a year ago (back before they moved to this location from old city) but made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone for fear that the word would get out and it would become even harder to get a reservation. I quietly ate at the old city location a year ago and enjoyed one of the best Italian meals I've ever had! I dutifully kept the secret until now... but with the pandemic ravaging the restaurant industry I think that it's time to let others in on the secret. I finally returned to try their new location and this place is still the best - old school charm, warm staff, amazing food. Do yourself a favor and try the arugula mango Gorgonzola salad and one of the special entrees and the tiramisu - but you really can't go wrong!

Maureen K.

Yelp
The first time I went in November I had a wonderful meal and experience. When I went on New Year's Eve I ordered the same meal, pappardelle pasta and shrimp dish. It was very good although the portion was noticeably smaller. I did not appreciate the server adding the gratuity (for 2 people) to the check because she didn't tell us, didn't write "gratuity or tip" on the check, and it wasn't stated on the menu. She would have received more than the $22 tip she added, had she not done this.

Thomas O.

Yelp
Didn't know where they had moved to. Fabulous Italian food at super prices! Incredible specials.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here twice since it opened and we cannot recommend them enough! Our server, Joe, alone is worth the visit. The everyday menu is small but they have just as many specials and they have regular staples. Every dish was incredible and well seasoned which is something so simple yet so many restaurants fail to do well. Service is great, and can't beat a BYO. There's a bottle shop inside the IGA across the street if you forgot to bring some beer or wine.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Just noticed that this place has no reviews which is a crime. I am not normally one to write a review but I would feel somehow responsible if they didn't make it through the pandemic because I've only gone a few times and haven't spread the word to friends. Everything I have tried it next level delicious. If you are reading this you NEED to try them out!

Yelp
Their food is absolutely delicious. It is an intimate, friendly environment. It is perfect for dining out with friends, family, or your significant other. I highly recommend!
