This restaurant was one of my favorite meals of my entire trip. On my trip in Italy, whenever I sat down to eat I would sometimes struggle to know whether or not I was experiencing something authentic or touristic. Without reservations, every good place is already booked up and I find myself ending up somewhere where I hear more English than Italian, has atmosphere catered to middle aged tourists, and eating food that doesn't live up to the hype you hear from friends. That is not the case at Grottino Azzurro. We were in Positano in the off season and it was one of the few places open, and we didn't need a reservation. Marcello, who I think is the owner, welcomed us and told us about the menu. It is located up on the main road, and every local person that drove by stopped to say hello to Marcello or their other Italian local friends who were hanging out in front of the restaurant. The menu was a small hand written, daily fresh menu, which I learned from my travels in France is always a good sign that you are getting market fresh food. The ingredients in each dish were high quality, fresh, and delicious and we even ordered another bottle of wine after our meal just to stay and take in the atmosphere, the view, and watch the local friends hang out on the road drinking beer. This was the food I had heard so much about in Italy that you supposedly find everywhere but I had struggled to find, and the whole meal was more elaborate and less expensive than what I had gotten used to! Already planning to go back again.
