Il Portico Review - Kensington - London - The Infatuation

"This High Street Kensington spot has been around since the 1960s, and it continues to serve topnotch Italian food to this day. But what is it exactly that makes it so great? Is it the calamari? The heavy curtain at the entrance that keeps the cold air out? The intimate booths at the back? Actually, it’s all of the above, plus the friendly staff, and a menu filled with comforting plates of food like nutmeg and walnut gnocchi, veal milanese, and wild mushroom risotto. Basically, you could easily spend a lot of time in this old-school restaurant, and you should. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Rianne Shlebak

This quaint little restaurant set in historic Tappan New York, is a Hidden Gem just 45 minutes north of New York City. I had the panko-crusted grilled chicken, gnocchi, grilled octopus, and fish. All were supremely prepared, and served by are enthusiastic host, and owner, Pepe. The price is about $25 per plate, and drinks are about $12 each. Now I know why it's pretty full each night! PS: There are 2 dining medium size dining room, and a bar.

I've been dining here quite a long time with my special friends especially. It's like a private club atmosphere. Clean and quiet. Foods are made like homemade. The boss is kind and friendly. I recommend it for special occasions or meetings particularly.

My husband and I had an excellent experience at Il Portico. Our meals were delicious, we were never rushed, and our server was lovely. This was our first time here and looking forward to returning.

Google
Our dinner was great! The service was outstanding. The young lady that serviced was very professional and diligent. The owner always came to our table to make sure we were doing fine with our dinner. The place is very clean and cozy. The ambiance is very comfortable and relaxing. I surely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Make sure you call for reservations.

Google
Went here with my girlfriend, very cozy atmosphere , right near the fireplace. Tables were spread out where you didn't feel like you were on top of other guests. Service was very attentive. the owner himself came to our table and greeted us. The food was very unique , in a good way. I had the short ribs with risotto. The short ribs literally melted in my mouth, and the aju was very rich and flavorful. The risotto was very creamy and light. My partner had the scallops. They were cooked to perfection. The only aspect of this establishment that could use a brush up is their dessert department. Very lacking, in my opinion. Certainly not something that would stop me from visiting again.

Yesterday I celebrated my 80th birthday at Il Portico. This is by far the best restaurant in Rockland County. Peppe worked with us for several months to create a wonderful and varied menu and a seating plan. He’s great to work with and caring about your needs. The final product was an outstanding menu We had had over 20 people and Peppe created a terrific set up where people could enjoy the party and have good conversation. As always the food and service were outstanding. Everyone commented on how excellent the food was and the fact that there such a varied menu. Best of all the cost was unbelievably fair for what he gave us. If you have a special occasion or just for a wonderful dinner experience, Il Portico is where you should go.

Yelp
Owner has a serious attitude problem. He told people to leave when they walked in without a reservation. Over-rated mediocre food at best.

Yelp
Great food, wonderful white table cloth setting and helpful staff. I'll be back. Pasta was perfectly cooked.

Yelp
The owner is a disturbed individual whose prone fits of rudeness. The moment I met him I got a bad vibe. He yelled at me in the parking lot. He said the place was closed but was talking to someone just two minutes prior to my being there. But why yell at someone, especially a potential customer? He didn't hear anything I was saying. Disrespectful--nauseatingly so. I went to the 76 House instead. Don't go here. He doesn't deserve my business.

Yelp
Used to love this place and was excited to come back after many years. Unfortunately it wasn't that good. The door was locked and we had to be let in (Saturday night) and we were the only table seated with the exception of a couple finishing up in the other room. My pasta dish was basically a small dish noodles cheese (very dry), the short ribs were oddly seasoned, and the pork was dry too. The service was great and friendly.

Yelp
Had a great dinner at Il Portico last night, food and service were excellent. I had the Oysters for an appetizer and they were the best I've had. We love coming here and Peppe is a gracious host.

Yelp
Excellent food. The owner is a fabulous eccentric who waits in tables sometimes. Smallish bar with 2 comfortable dining rooms. Off street parking lot available.

Yelp
My wife and I recently celebrated an anniversary at Il Portico. We were greeted at the door by the owner. What a truly pleasant gentleman. He exudes pride in his establishment. We were escorted to a quiet seating area that was impeccably clean and cozy. It was the perfect room for having a conversation. The waitress was very nice and professional. She had a solid knowledge of the menu and made helpful suggestions. My wife had an arugula salad starter and I had the homemade spaghetti cacio e pepe. I could tell that the spaghetti was homemade, because the texture was exceptional. The sauce was tasty and it was served at optimal temperature. My wife had the Faroe Island salmon and I had the branzino entree. Both pieces of fish were high quality and perfectly cooked. The accompaniments were just right, my wife enjoyed the bed of zucchini noodles. I went with the tartufo for dessert. Hadn't had tartufo in a while and this was a great example. A great ending to a lovely meal!

Yelp
This restaurant is out of this world. Everything we ordered was beyond our expectations, including the exceptional hospitality and service. Al is a gracious owner and an awesome host. Al's son Eli was an excellent server. Very attentive, friendly and helpful. I really appreciated how he packaged our leftovers with care. Nothing turns me off more than being handed a self serve to-go container. This establishment exudes class. You can tell they treasure all they have to offer. Our waitor, George, has extensive knowledge about the menu itens and specials. I've had the best lollipop lamb chops EVER! I recommend the homemade mozzarella. I have dreamed about it after the first time I had it. It is that good! The pasta is perfect. The lobster bisque and seafood fra Diablo was exceedingly delicious. My sister in law who never eats more than a quarter of what she orders... ate more than half. The French pastry with homemade sweet cream & strawberries had the perfect delicate chocolate drizzle that took this dessert to the top. GO! Please sample this delightful establishment. See for yourself what I'm talking about.

Yelp
I just had a special birthday party here. I cannot rave enough about the restaurant and the staff. First the food is outstanding. The service second to none. Peppe, the owner worked with us to plan an outstanding menu with variety to meet everyone's taste. He made the day exceptional with his care and oversight of the event. Paige who works closely with Peppe made sure everyone was taken care of. They both made the event memorable. This is by far the, in my opinion, the best restaurant in Rockland County for either a wonderful meal or a special occasion.

Yelp
Had an intimidate Mother's Day lunch here. Owner was so lovely and personally waited on us. Food was great, happy it wasn't like a prefixed menu. I had the chicken Marsala, was very good. Some others in the party got variations of pasta which they all enjoyed. Portions were not family style - but just enough. We order the calamari, burrata and meatballs for apps, all pretty good. Place is small, and I believe only takes reservations even after Covid restrictions have been lifted.
google avatar

Leila T.

Yelp
the food here is still absolutely delicious, but Covid has hit this restaurant hard. so many of the things we loved about this little gem are still true: quaint dining area, romantic atmosphere, tasty food. but Covid has forced this restaurant to cut back on staffing. on all of the evenings we have been there, there has been no bartender (though I have heard that one comes in on Saturdays) which limits what you are able to order. typically there is only one waitress/runner and the owner pitches in with the rest of the dining room tasks. everything still runs smoothly but i have seen service get a little hectic and slow on a busy night. if you decide to try this place (and i really recommend that you do) you absolutely must call ahead and make a reservation as they do not accept walk ins and since Covid the front door of the restaurant is kept locked at all time (a little drastic in my opinion and i have seen walk ins get turned away because no one opened the door). please come out and give this delicious restaurant a try!

Yelp
My first time here. We were a party of five. The menu was impressive. Order appetizers for all. Mussels, eggplant , meatballs and fried calamari. All appetizers weee delicious. Entrees were raviolis, chicken scallopine and parmigiana, salmon. All were delicious too. Everyone in the party were very happy with their meals.

Yelp
Went there for my husbands birthday dinner, the owner has an attitude , the place gives off an uncomfortable vibe, the dishes were mediocre, going out suppose to be enjoyable , totally ruined our night, would never return or recommend this place to anyone. Not sure how this place got 2 stars or above !! ??

Yelp
We dined at IL Portico tonight for the first time. It was our 43rd anniversary and wanted a special experience close to home. We were greeted at the door by our waitress. Very pleasant lady The food was exceptional. I had the burrata salad followed by short ribs with cauliflower risotto My husband had the caesar salad and the scallops. We will definitely go again!

Yelp
Elegant atmosphere, wonderful service, a warm host, and excellent food. A winner. We enjoyed our clam and oyster appetizers, my wife loved her pasta with sausage, and my Bronzino was on point. We look forward to returning.

Eli B.

Yelp
Excellent all around; food ,service and ambiance.Seating by reservation only; no walk-ins.

Yelp
Great service, wonderful place, delicious food. Great for a date night or a family gathering. You must have a reservation, no walk ins.

Yelp
We love coming here for date night. The food is outstanding (home made pasta dishes are our favorite) and Peppe is the ultimate host (his staff are kind and provide excellent service). We know we will always have an excellent meal and enjoy ourselves at Il Portico!

Chris B.

Yelp
The staff was so nice and friendly. You will never have better calamari. It was simply perfect. The entire meal from start to finish was amazing. First time there but will not be the last for sure.

Yelp
Delicious entrees, served in a cozy, historic building. We were the only diners, and were treated to very personal service.

Yelp
My family and I had dinner at ail Portico last night. The food was delicious! The service was excellent! The bartender and waitress were very professional and pleasant. The owner was very friendly and kind. He always came to our table to check on us with a friendly smile. The decor is beautiful. It's a very cozy place. I recommend this restaurant to anyone. Make sure you call for reservations.

Maria S.

Yelp
DO NOT waste your time or money here. The owner was extremely rude. I made reservations in advance for a Saturday evening seating. My reservations were changed from 7 to 7:15 without me initiating it. When we arrived "early", we were scolded and were told that we were NOT ALLOWED to sit at the bar. The place was EMPTY. Once we were finally seated, we waited over 20 minutes for the bartender to come to our table to take drink orders. After waiting over 40 minutes, we still hadn't been introduced to our waiter/waitress nor were given menus. After patiently waiting, someone asked for the menus and again was rudely spoked to by the owner and was told to "stop being anxious". We decided to pay for our drinks (which by the way weren't even made correctly) .... and leave. As we were leaving, the owner disappeared but not before he uttered under his breathe F-bombs & childish remarks. In all my experiences, I have never had service like this. I should have read the poor reviews of this place prior to making a reservation. Lesson learned on my end as I like to give a place a chance... but not in this case. I have never had such an AWFUL experience. The vibe was unnerving & unwelcoming. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE TAKEN OVER BY NEW WELCOMING MANGEMENT. An owner should have proper customer service ESPECIALLY in this industry.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
ZERO STARS! Waited 20 minutes for the bartender to come over & take our drink order. After 40 minutes with no menus (or even bread on the table) my husband asked the owner nicely for menus & the owner told him "stop being anxious". That's when we decided to pay for our drinks & go elsewhere. The bartender told the owner that we were leaving and he said "tell them to sit down & relax they're acting like children". A good owner would've come over to the table to apologize & make things right. Absolutely a horrible experience!

Yelp
Let's just say everything was done casual classy. A small, comfortable Italian restaurant that could be a great place for a date but is also equally welcoming for families. We went for dinner on a quiet Sunday evening celebrating our daughter's birthday. We had an attentive wait staff team that added to the enjoyment. With a well-behaved two year old, we were still able to linger over multiple courses, and we did. Started with clams and salads for appetizers. The salads were of a shareable size, so some trades were made for clams. The house bread was served with an olive spread. We chose from cocktails and wines from the bar, all reasonably priced. My entree was a branzino fish special, just the filets as I like it so I don't have it staring back at me. All the other entrees were enjoyed equally, chicken Marsala being especially good. We saved room for desserts and the birthday girl's arrived with a candle and a song! The owner had checked with us earlier to make sure we enjoyed everything and we did! All the staff was competent and friendly.

Yelp
Decided to go out for a nice dinner. Had read great things about this restaurant. The positives: The wine was excellent and the appetizer, a pumpkin flan, was outstanding. It really got our anticipation stoked. The negatives: The meals were terrible. My wild boar was so dry it sucked the moisture out of my mouth. It tasted like bland pot roast that had been re-heated 2x until it was so overcooked you wouldn't even use it on a sandwich. It came with 10 miniature potato halves, which is fine, except no salad, no veggies. The boar was about 8 ounces. My wife had chicken 'with spinach and a cauliflower puree.' There was perhaps 2 tablespoons of spinach and the puree turned out to be just a spoonful spread across the plate for decoration. The chicken ended up being 2 pieces pounded so thin they were like paper, and in total wouldn't make up a half a breast of real chicken. And they were very overcooked. We left just as hungry as we arrived. Neither meal was worth the money. Had we known, we'd have just gotten 4 appetizers! Needless to say, we won't be back and we won't be recommending it to anyone.

Brian B.

Yelp
Mediocre food at best at way too high prices for the lack of quality. Service is not great and the space is squeezed. Not worth your time.

Yelp
Ate here many times and enjoyed the food and staff until tonight. What I think was the owner got into my wife's face because she asked for a different table. In his words " when I go to your house do I ask to sit somewhere else". Of course I could not let anyone talk to her that way so we had words and left never to return. The rudest most obnoxious man I've come across in the food service industry. Him telling me I don't dine in good places . Well I ate there a lot. If you go enjoy the food it's pretty good but sit down shut up and don't ask for anything to piss the old man off.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice ambiance; tables well spaced. I would return occasionally but not often because of the price point. Our bread was cold to the touch, as if served from the refrigerator; I thought that was odd. It was a pleasure meeting the friendly owner of the restaurant, who watches over the tables to make sure everything is just so. The wait staff was friendly and pleasant and provided adequate service but a bit inexperienced for a restaurant of this caliber. Loved the arugula salad with Fuji apple, pecorino, caramelized almonds, I had the dressing only on the side. Loved the homemade gnocchi main course, which my husband and I split as our second course; pillowy soft, buttery taste; a bit rich but delicious. My main course was bronzino fillets with roast potatoes and green beans. The roast potatoes and green beans were outrageously delicious; the bronzino was a disappointment. I received an exceptionally skimpy portion of fish and, as is common with skinny filets of fish, the ends were no longer fresh tasting while the fatter sides were fresh and tasty. I saw 2 plates of moist, large and plump bronzino being served to a different table later in the evening, so I was just unlucky this evening. The bread pudding was tasty; I recommend it; a different recipe than I'm used to; drier than in other restaurants but very tasty. I recommend the Pinot Grigio by the glass.

Yelp
My wife and I have been coming here for years. The meals are always terrific, the atmosphere relaxed, tables well-spaced, and the owner treats all guests like family. Makes for a pleasurable evening every time.

Yelp
I swear I wanted to love this place!! Too many things went wrong Food alone I will give 4 stars, atmosphere alone like a 2 Based on the outside of the place you would think it looks a lot different You walk in and it's a like stuffy white tablecloths tables Looks so different then it appears outside We were not greeted for about 8 minutes We were not offered sparking water (odd at an Italian restaurant) not that I care that much but the tap waster is nasty The sun dried tomato comport that was served with the bread was underwhelming The flavor was not there for me The bread was amazing crispy and good I had a Cosmo it was all vodka I was okay with it but the flavor was not there at all My mom and husband got a bottle Of wine it was good Small wine list but good options I asked the waited who was not really a waiter but was waiting on us what he recommended He just said he likes the fresh pasta I got what he recommended but good but very basic I also got the shrimp cocktail (3) shrimp.. It was okay My mom Got the clams they looked good didn't try (6) My dad got the chicken parm, no pasta offered!!!!!!???????????? Al la cart? Wtf Side of pasta 11.00, either way good and thin Totally random no pasta offered My husband had veal it was good My mom had the meat sauce I think that restaurant is having an identity crisis of what it wants to be Maybe a little live music or an instrument being played would change the feel of it Either way I think this would be more enjoyable as a date not really dinner with my parents Food was good didn't wow me

Yelp
My husband and I went to Il Portico for our anniversary and we have nothing but great things to say about this gem of Tappan. The restaurant is in a historic building so it is just beautiful. The ambiance is classy and cozy at the same time. The food was delicious. We had the octopus for appetizer which was prepared perfectly. I had the lobster ravioli which was amazing. My husband had the shrimp and risotto. The service was excellent. Very attentive and very eager to please. I will definitely be coming back here and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fine Italian dining experience.

Yelp
This was my first time time at ll Portico. Over all I was very disappointed. I ordered the Sea Scallops over white asparagus and risotto special. The scallops were tasteless and the asparagus over cooked and mushy (not to mention extremely overpriced at $39) They have a very small beer list and nothing on tap. The wait staff was friendly but not particularly attentive or helpfully. Portico wasn't terrible BUT with so many truly good restaurants in the area I won't be going back

Carrie S.

Yelp
I wanted a mixed drink and they weren't serving them. The owner got so mad that I was thinking about leaving over a drink he verbally assaulted and berated me and told me to leave the restaurant. It was extremely jarring and scary to say the least. DO NOT give this man your business. No one should be spoken to the way he spoke to me. Especially a customer. Terrible...

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
We love Il Portico! The food is delicious, the service is great. The owner Peppe is nice and so attentive and makes you feel as if you are at home! Be sure to stop by and experience a wonderful evening!!
google avatar

Yelp
I just love Il Portico, and Peppe and Herman are such wonderful hosts. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is quaint and inviting. We were there as a family yesterday and my oysters on the half shell were fresh and delicious. I followed that with the crab cake and it came with an absolutely incredible aioli sauce... I also had an event there about a month ago and the staff really went above and beyond to ensure that the day was perfect. Wondering what to order? The homemade pasta's incredible and the lobster ravioli is equally as fabulous. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
what a delightful surprise! the dinner was superb. It reminded me of my visit to venice. The pasta was so fresh and tasty I had the bolognese tagliatelle and it was delicious. My date had the filet mignon and she cleaned the plate. The tiramisu was heavenly, very moist and airy . The ambience was romantic , with a antique colonial type of decor. I loved everything about it! Thank you to the owner who even had a wine of glass with us! Had a wonderful time and will return very soon.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best Italian food and atmosphere outside of Italy and you happen to be in Tappan, NY, don't look further. IL Portico IS the place. This restaurant exists for over 28 years under the same ownership. Pepe is the man, who created and maintained the place with unbelievable sense of home in this historic location. Despite of all ups and downs, IL Portico always offers a superb food and very professional and non-intrusive service. My personal favorite dish is an octopus ( tried it in many places)... this is the best. Pepe is always at the place greeting his customers, many of which know him for years... I recommend IL Portico very strongly for food, atmosphere and professionalism of the staff... Great place!

Yelp
Peppe the owner is a charmer. The food is even better! We went for lunch and decided to share 3 courses, salad pasta and fish. The picture is of a half sized portion of grilled branzino with lemon sauce. It tasted even better than it looks! We loved the fresh baked bread (comes out warm), the incredible texture of homemade pasta. fresh garlic and clam sauce.and the attentive and friendly staff. This is 5 stars all day! Coming back again and again..

Yelp
This place is a disgrace. Tried to go here friday evening April 16th 2010 with my two children, wife, and niece. It was 7pm, no reservation so we walked in and the place was empty except for three tables. The balding waiter with goatee took one look at us and said that they had no room for us. I asked incredulously, you have no room for us are you sure and he says nope sorry. We left and took our business to Milano who was ten times busier but MADE ROOM for us! Screw Il Portico.

Yelp
The biggest and most pleasant surprise since DH and I moved to Tappan. The 'wine guy' told us that we had to check this place out because he thought it was better than other Italian recomeendations we had been given and we finally got around to it last night in celebrating DH's new job title. We came right after work at 6:30 and there were already quite a few tables full. We were seated and received prompt service for a drink and some bread. After ordering a bottle of wine to celebrate this occasion we perused the menu, listened to the specials, and decided to go with half order pastas for appetizers and then an entree. I had the homemade gnocchi in a marsala wine sauce with peas and prosciutto, DH had the tagletelle pasta with rabbit ragu (meat sauce) and then for entree's I had the thin chicken cutlet with arugala, tomatoes, mozzerella, and oil&vinegar - it was super light and tasty. DH had wasabi encrusted salmon with dijon sauce that came with veggies and potatoe for sides. While he thorougly enjoyed it there was a bit too much dijon sauce. This restaurant is NYC quality and also comes with NYC prices but was totally worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful little restaurant with a very nice menu. All the food was very well prepared. Plenty of room in between tables which is nice. Only complaint was the wait staff was a little inexperienced and left us for long periods of time. I think there was only 1 waiter for the entire place with one helper and one bus person. Not enough staff to adequately service all the customers. For a place this pricey they need more staff.

Yelp
I went here on Valentine's Day, the service was very timely and friendly. The server used our names every single time he spoke with us or when we requested items. That is so rarely seen in the food industry now a days. The cappuccino I ordered was phenomenal. Tasted fresh, and had a great balance. The rest of the food however could have been a bit better. The Scottish salmon was good but a little on the burnt side for me. Lobster ravioli was very good, good portion size but it was just a tiny bit on the thick side. The location itself has some quant feel with it but it's hard to not realize you are basically eating out of a renovated house. It threw me off a little not to mention confuse me why I was seated in one table and then have everyone else seated on the other side. I did like the privacy but having them load one side up away from me made me feel a bit alienated. Overall good not great.

Dina K.

Yelp
We dined at this restaurant this past Friday night. We were able to get a table for 6 at 8:00 with no wait. Our coats were taken to the coat check but no one was there to get them for us when we were ready to leave. We were seated it took about a half hour to get our drinks, the restaurant was not even crowded. We waited another 15 minutes to get our menus and had to ask for them twice. Our entrees were set down about 45 minutes later. The pasta entree looked like an appetizer portion. While the servers were good and nice they were not very attentive. My half eaten, overly salted salmon was taken away from me when the waiter cleared the table. I never received the sauce that I ordered on the side, and I was not asked if I was finished or if I'd like to bring it home. I would not recommend this restaurant and definitely would not go here again.

Yelp
My cousin told me about this place that served excellent northern Italian food and was newly renovated after a car crashed into it in March. I stopped in for lunch on Tuesday to see the place and try out the food. As soon as I stepped in the door, I was greeted by an Italian gentleman (turned out to be the owner) who treated me like I was family he hadn't seen in a while. The place was tastefully decorated - crisp white linen table cloths, a few Italian framed posters on pastel green walls. I had a prociutto appetizer, which came with sliced figs and Gorgonzola cheese - very original combination of flavors and a creative presentation. For the main course, I had the white striped bass with squash and tomatoes. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned with fresh herbs - the seasoning was just enough to enhance the taste of the fish - not overpowering. And the portion size was perfect for lunch. For dessert, I tried the pistachio gelato - good flavor, not as creamy as I would have expected - but a tasty finish to a satisfying lunch. When I mentioned to the owner that I heard about the car crash, he showed me the place where the car had broken through the corner of the building and had smashed one of the tables. I couldn't see any evidence of the damage. He was clearly very proud of the work he put into restoring the place, which he told me was originally built in the 1850's.

Yelp
We came here for a party this past weekend. The food was delicious, staff was courteous and professional. Then there is the owner, which is the reason I am only giving two stars. The entire restaurant was reserved for the party, so there were no outside guests. Apparently, when the number of guests that would be attending the party was called in, seating for 4 was set at each table to accommodate every person. As not every family had 4 to sit, there were empty seats at some tables, therefore not enough seating for every family, so some were moving tables and place settings. This is when the owner went nuts, yelling at guests that he had the settings the way they were to be, and should he go to someone's house and rearrange the seating to please him. Personally, I would not recommend this restaurant because of the owners childish behavior and explosive demeanor towards the guests.

Barbara L.

Yelp
There were two of us for dinner and we were greeted by the owner who appeared pleasant and cordial. We chose not to hang up our coats but keep them and he gave us a look. We did hear it was under new management. We had not been there in awhile and remember it being very inviting, excellent service, and delicious food with ample portions. We were greeted by the waiter and we were told there were no specials. It was a Saturday night. One of us ordered the Lobster Ravioli and we were then told by the waiter oh we just ran out of it. It wasn't even 7:00pm on a Saturday night and the restaurant was empty except for two tables by us. I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana. There were only two salads to choose from on this ala carte menu and the appetizers choices were sparce. One of us ordered a chicken with white wine sauce over spinach as their entree. It was the size of an appetizer portion. The sauce on the Chicken Parmigiana was very bland and tasteless. It was served with about seven small semi roasted potatoes and a small portion of spinach. Not much to say about it but tasteless! The glass of house chardonnay was about a 1/4 of a glass and we noticed the table next to us, the two men had ordered wine by the glass and they were over half full. If you are going to charge over $10 per glass for a house chardonnay then give the customer a decent glass. The service was nothing out of the ordinary. The waiter brought cold bread with no butter to the table and a brussel sprout spread that tasted like a cross between brocolli and brussel sprouts. We asked him twice for butter and finally the bus boy brought us some. After the food came the waiter disappeared and we asked him for some ice and he never came back. Another guy in a different colored checkered shirt came by and took care of us for the remainder of the meal. He might have been a bus boy but was much more attentive than the waiter. We ordered hot tea and coffee and the coffee tasted like it had been sitting for awhile. The waiter from the beginning reappeared when it was time to present the check. The food is totally overpriced and there is no ambiance whatsoever! Service is similar to a good diner and the food is nothing to write home about. When I did contact the owner about our experience he was not as cordial as he was when we arrived at the restaurant. I mentioned the wine by the glass and he said I hope they charged you more than $10 per glass that they have a wonderful wine selection. I told him I ordered the house wine. I did explain why we were disappointed with our evening and he said to me that I had been speaking for a half hour and that if I continued he was going to hang up on me. I had only been talking with him for several minutes. He was very disrespectful and rude. His demeanor at the door is not who he is. He has a European accent so he possibly was given an opportunity in this country to own a business and he should be civil with customers and welcome constructive criticism. We are spending money in your establishment and if we are not happy he should try to see why and try to rectify it with the customer. We would not recommend this restaurant at all! If the owner had been kind and showed some interest in why we were disappointed with our experience then we may have given the restaurant another chance. He hung up on me right after he said he would. No reason given and no apology or anything! I would never give this place any business just based on that reaction from the owner. There are too many really good restaurants in Rockland and Orange County! Il Portico is not what it used to be!

Yelp
Food is average. Early on a Saturday night they were out of several dishes including Ice tea. Service was not great and the table behind us never got part of their main course. When the couple complained to the owner on their way out, the owner started yelling at them Very unprofessional Because of this incident and the overall value for the price, we will not return

Yelp
I hive them a 4.5: The nicely renovated Il Portico serves delicious steaks, meatballs, salad and roasted red pepper soup. I like their by-the-glass Cabernet very much. The service is very friendly and prompt. They accommodate large groups with reservations, and have a convenient parking lot.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in the area. My husband and used to go there 3 times a month (until we moved) and have never had a bad experience. It's an Italian based menu. The portions are just right- and the food is great. Not like one of those places that give you a lb of average pasta and sauce. I love the mozzarella salad and the salmon-always cooked perfect. The staff is very professional and attentive. Love love love this hidden gem.
