Principe Review - Soho - New York - The Infatuation

"Principe is the most exciting restaurant to open up around the flagship Prada store in years. Located in a former photography gallery, and frequented by diners who treat every week like Fashion Week, it's about as Soho as it gets. But the seafood-focused, Italian-inspired dishes are so good that we’re changing our minds about dining in the vicinity of the world’s most expensive handbags. If you’re at some boutique on Wooster or Greene and about to pull the trigger on a new going-out ensemble, you could head to Principe straight from the dressing room and you'd fit right in. But this place isn’t a total scene. You’ll also see groups of colleagues who just want to eat somewhere that isn’t in Midtown and looks cool, with walls made of huge concrete slabs, softened by sea green accents and the light of abundant chandeliers. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Make a reservation for the spacious upstairs dining room or the moodier downstairs, which has more of a jazz club vibe. Or, for a more casual aperitivo-style experience, grab a seat at the long marble counter next to the raw bar. Each raw bar item costs between $11-21, and if you can, you should get them all. But if you have to narrow down your choices, get the creamy lobster salad with a hint of horseradish, and the sweet scallops with pistachio crumbles. Each comes with two tiny morsels—and you’ll want about 10 more. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte If you are settling down for dinner, focus on pastas over mains. There’s some serious pedigree (The Modern, Eleven Madison Park) in the kitchen behind them, and they’re all worth trying. But the impossibly pillowy dollops of ndunderi are the clear winner, and the buttery lemon sauce they come with is the perfect dipping partner for Principe’s crumpet-like complimentary bread. The pastas aren’t that big, so add an order of the tortellini too. Will restaurants ever be the first thing that people think of when someone mentions Soho? Probably not. Sure, there’s Balthazar and Blue Ribbon, but those places have been around since the last century, and not a whole lot of notable spots have followed. With Principe, the short list of go-to restaurants in the neighborhood just got a little longer. Food Rundown Note: Some items only remain on the menu for a few months, and the kitchen often switches up ingredients within dishes. photo credit: Kate Previte Complimentary Bread How much would we pay for this bread if it wasn’t free? A lot. It’s amazing. It’s sort of like the English muffin’s fancy cousin who went to Oxford and might be 28th in line to the throne. Tear one open, and steam will pour right into your eyeballs. Dip the bread in the accompanying Calabrian chili oil and goat butter, then ask for more. photo credit: Kate Previte Lobster Salad With Horseradish & Lettuce Think of this bite as a mini lobster roll in a lettuce cup with fresh shaved horseradish for some spice. It’s not the worst idea in the world to take your friend who’s allergic to shellfish here. That way, you can have this whole dish to yourself. photo credit: Kate Previte Scallops With Pistachio & Sorrel In this bite, the crunch from crushed pistachios takes sweet fresh scallops to another level, while oxalis stems add some lemony notes. The littlest details can make a huge difference, and now we never want to have raw scallops without nuts again. photo credit: Kate Previte Sucrine Lettuce With Avocado & Mint This salad is simple but memorable, with sucrine lettuce leaves and just the right amount of lemony vinaigrette. photo credit: Kate Previte Ndunderi With Lemon & Bottarga Out of all the pastas, this one’s our first choice. Each little dumpling is like a fluffy cloud of ricotta, but as you bite into each one, you’ll notice that the middle has a creamy consistency like crème fraîche. We’re happier just knowing that this dish exists. photo credit: Kate Previte Basil Tortellini In Brown-Butter Brodo It’s a genuine accomplishment that this tortellini is only stuffed with a basil mixture, because we swear we taste cheese. The filling is creamy and salty, and you’ll mop up every last drop of the brown butter brodo they’re bathing in with that free bread. photo credit: Kate Previte Grilled Duck With Rhubarb & Fennel The best way to have a meal at Principe is to have some raw bar items, pastas, and desserts. But if you want to try a main, get the duck. A vinegar butter sauce provides sour richness, and there’s always a sweet element from something fruity like rhubarb, or honey with preserved oranges. photo credit: Kate Previte King Crab Risotto With Morel Mushrooms & Wild Spinach We’ve had this risotto with undercooked rice, but we’ve also had it prepared perfectly al dente. It comes with big chunks of morels, a disappointingly small stick of king crab, and some lobster and crab sabayon on top of already-creamy rice. When the kitchen gets this very rich dish right, we like it. But it costs $65, and we’d rather spend that money on more raw bar items. photo credit: Kate Previte Lemon-Rosemary Fries You know what we eat a lot of? Fries. The ones here are better than most. They’re saltier than they need to be, and that’s a good thing. The lemon and rosemary seasoning is subtle, and there’s a lime green jalapeño dipping sauce that comes on the side. photo credit: Kate Previte Coconut Yogurt Popsicles These small popsicles are ideal when you’re stuffed but still want dessert. They’re made with frozen coconut yogurt that’s tangy, sweet, and salty at the same time. We’ve seen these coated with either frozen hibiscus or blueberry juice. photo credit: Kate Previte Hummingbird Torta On the other hand, if you want something sweet and have room to spare, get this torta. The brown butter cake topped with caramel sauce has a crispy crust surrounding a moist, candied pineapple-filled interior. The whipped yogurt on the side helps to balance out all that sugar." - Kenny Yang

It was my first time ordering food from Il Principe, and I was genuinely impressed by the quality and tatse of everything we tried. We had the Chicche di Patate alla Pescatore and Penne al Salmone. Each dish showcased fresh seafood and the kind of authentic Italian flavour that stands out. Definitely check it out on Wednesdays! We also tried the Arancino alla Bolognese and Arancino al Prosciutto; both were satisfying and had a delicious center.

Stunning, authentic pasta dishes! The spaghetti alla Nerano is one of the best pasta dishes we've had, here or in Italy; the way the sauce holds to the pasta is exceptional and so tasty. Fantastic place!

The pizza here is the best pizza you will EVER eat. I have had the pizza over in Naples and it does not compare to Il Principe! There is a new seating area inside which is the CUTEST set up and honestly makes the experience even more special. It’s a MUST to go here if you’re visiting Oxford!

Best place to get all ingredients if you’re cooking Italian! The mozzarella is freshly available and there are also homemade sauces that are super tasty! They also have a take away menu and they have some of the authentic Italian dishes on it.

Great little Italian deli serving take-out pizza. 😋 Am a Vegan/ Veggie so had four items: Peroni beer - very tasty. 🍺 Spinach and Cheese Aranchini - not Vegan but incredibly tasty and tasted wholesome like it has meat (though doesn't). 🧆 Vegitariana pizza - took 20 mins but really tasty and filling. 🍕 Baci chocolate (see wrapper in photo) - again not vegan but super delicious chocolate. They also have an espresso chocolate. 🍫 They also have wines, cold desserts, some unusual soft drinks, an olive servery, Olive oils, pastas, pasta sauces, Amaretti biscuits, and Beef Aranchini. My one gripe is they have really bizarre opening hours. May be just lockdown but they seem closed a lot (e.g. not early Sunday afternoon but on Monday 🤨). However worth the wait and they were a warm place to stay while waiting for our food. Oh, and they could do with more vegan options for hot food. Overall: definitely recommended.

The taste and texture of the pizzas are exactly like how they were in Italy. Worth the wait. Highly recommended. They sell Italian food stuff for you to create an Italian gastronomic experience at home too.

Lovely shop with so many Italian products! The staff were lovely and it was nice to see so many products that I cannot find anywhere else. It will be great if card payment can be with no limit (£5) limit and some products are a bit expensive compared to other shops but other than this greatly recommend! Would love to try their pizzas next time!

Yelp
Definitely one of the top pizza places in Oxford, that's mostly a deli. Meats, pasta, pick and mix olives, frozen tubs of bolognese and tiramisu, etc. Walking area is pretty narrow inside the shop, so there's no real waiting room if you're ordering a pizza (which are takeaway only), so order ahead to save yourself the long wait where there really is no standing room.

Yelp
I always thought this was 'just' another Italian restaurant until I sheltered under the roof by the door in a rainstorm. It's actually a wonderful Italian deli - just the sort of place you find in Cowley. They've got an exciting mix of different foods with suitably Italian-sounding names. It's absolutely brilliant if you want to try cooking your own Italian food at home, but using proper Italian ingredients, rather than Sainsburys' attempt. Even if the idea of cooking foreign food terrifies you, there's something for you, with a great range of prepared food and the staff's useful advice on how to serve it. I imagine it would go down very well at a dinner party. They do sausages, cured meats, dried pasta (loads of funky shapes and sizes!), cheese and desserts (mmm tiramisu). They take telephone orders and are really flexible and helpful with orders. Don't fancy taking stuff home? They serve food there as well! Pizza for £4-£7, pasta where you choose your sauce first and then the sort of pasta to go with it, and even main courses like lasagne and meat dishes. Main dishes come with an Italian version of chips - absolutely delicious, Spinache and Parmesan or Fagioli della Mamma: a tomato sauce with bacon, beans, onion and chilli. Pop in for a bit of Italian food love see you in there!

Yelp
This is one of Oxford's best kept secrets. I love the takeaway pizza from this little deli, really tasty and great value. Does some great vegetarian ones too, not just your standard margarita and mushroom! In addition to this, the shop is packed full of interesting little deli items from all over the world. Go in for a box of fresh olives mixed on the deli counter, home-made tiramasu and a huge variety of pastas in all shapes, sizes and even colours! There's loads of continental style cakes and biscuits, as well as crackers and other snack foods. Worth considering if you're after a takeaway pizza - great value and excellent vegetarian options. Try the creamy base instead of the standard tomato - delicious!

Yelp
I love this place. I've only ever eaten the pizza here, but it is great. Thin crust and fresh ingredients, exactly what you expect from an Italian pizzeria.

Yelp
This place just smells so damn good so I had to go in and order... Got a Firenze with additional buffalo mozzarella. So good, so authentic. I also buy my coffee here; definitely one of the best places locally to acquire decent beans.
