Il Sanlorenzo

"A historic palazzo built over the foundations of the Teatro Pompeo is home to this atmospheric restaurant, which brings together history and contemporary art. However, the real star is the fish on the menu, most of which comes from the island of Ponza, and is served either raw or cooked very simply in a modern style." - Michelin Inspector

The spaghetti with mollusks (sometimes razor clams, other times clams) at Il SanLorenzo are so delicious, if insanely expensive at €25 a plate. I’m a super fan, though not everyone loves how al dente they serve their pasta.

Google
Amazing experience when you are looking for fish cuisine in Roma. This restaurant could easily grab a Michelin star if it continues like this. Only downside, the person accepting and placing us to our table was clearly below nice. I would have rated it lower if our waiter and the Maître d'H were not so amazing.

Google
I was a walk in, looking for a dinner alone. The staff were friendly and super welcoming, finding me a table even though it was a Saturday night. Very attentive service and great wine recommendations, I had the tasting menu and was not disappointed. Really recommend this place, especially if you’re a solo traveller.

Unfortunately, Il San Lorenzo was our worst dining experience in Rome. From the start, we felt unwelcome — the staff was overly strict about where we placed our baby stroller, despite the restaurant being mostly empty. We were seated near the kitchen in a hot, uncomfortable area, even though a cooler, air-conditioned room was available. It seems discriminating. The food was mediocre and forgettable, especially compared to the high standards we experienced in Venice and Milan. Nothing stood out in flavor or presentation. What made the experience worse was the cold, almost dismissive attitude from the staff, which left us feeling uncomfortable — at times even wondering if we were being treated differently for being Asian. Overall, between the lack of hospitality, the non-functioning AC, and the underwhelming food, we wouldn’t return. Rome has many better options.

The food was good, but for a place that expensive I was expecting a better service they brought us the wrong food and other food took a lot of time to come. Over all I would recommend this place only to someone who really enjoys raw fish. But the service isn’t at high enough level.

Just great place to experience Italian food in. Old style and elegant. Fresh seafood and variety of it so u can choose anything on ur taste. Food is decent, Pasta was a bit not my style tho. Sweets were complimentary.

Google
after reading the TA rvws about the haughty attitude was a bit nervous but went anyway bcs it was close to my hotel and am so glad i did. the seafood is very very tasty. i got a barrotolo of shellfish full of flavor and a fish baked in thin slices of crispy potato which tasted divine like no fish i've ever had before. did not get wine or anything else. and it was a bit expensive at 110 eur but totally worth it. service is formal and courteous. don't interrupt the waiter or try to order things all by yourself or they'll get very put out and get in a huff. just let them take charge and follow their advice and they'll be very nice.

Yelp
Too bad the attitude of the maitre d' and proprietor are poor and not anywhere close to the level of the food served. They both have a superior attitude and seem to cater only to the locals. The food and presentation were both excellent. Prices are high. Wine list is incredible. Overall, I'd opt to go somewhere else during our two week visit here in Rome. So many other choices offering better congeniality and value.

Yelp
Bad ambience. Many Americans and kids. Outside seating impossible to get. Seafood messy and poorly cooked. Overall, a tourist trap.

Yelp
Amazing seafood. Beautiful outdoor area. Good service. Great wine list, though not inexpensively marked. Nice vibe - mostly Italian families and business people the night I was there.

Yelp
I was actually very disappointed in this. This restaurant was recommended online. The bread basket, skip it. It's not good at all. The clam pasta was the best. My favorite from Thai restaurant. I remember the pasta being heavy even though it was only a cup of pasta The sea urchin pasta was hard to finish. The service was just okay. I have had better. Overall, I am disappointed in the food in Rome. Their olive oil is very good.

Yelp
We were looking forward an enjoyable birthday celebratory dinner for 9 diners - the whole experience was awful. The service was absolutely terrible, the staff was confusing and condescending. Some of the dishes were ok but most were underwhelming while being crazy overpriced. Even though we were a large group we had to patiently wait for service attention on everything - from ordering, water, bread, wine but especially food which was served inconsistently and embarrassingly. Orders were taken out of order creating confusion and even the children diners were accommodated with choices before the adults, 2 of which were missed altogether; they also didn't have many options available on the menu. When the food finally arrived, each course was served about 20 minutes apart and when the main dishes arrived only half the diners who had pasta dishes waiting for everyone else to be served and by then everyone eat cold dishes. The waiter even joked about forgetting enough plates for pasta and stuck a pan full of pasta under my nose - a joke that was rude and appauling especially considering I was covering the meal for our party.

Yelp
We showed up when the restaurant just opened at 745pm (they open at 730) dressed rather casually as we had been sightseeing all day and this restaurant was mentioned in our Rome tour guide book (!) Anyway, the pretentious maitre'd took one up and down once over on us, didnt look at any appointment book and said they had no reservations available. No mention of a dress code for this place or booking options online (we looked beforehand thats why we decided to walk over) Based on the manner we were turned away , I advise anyone to think twice about the values this place has on what kind of customers they serve based on how they look. Anyway we ended up at a nice restuarant down the block Trattoria Del Pallaro who had good food and great service. Have a great time in Rome !

Yelp
The best food I ate in Rome. Expansive restaurant but you get a full money value. The chaff treats you with appetizers and deserts and the service is great. The food is AMASSING! All in all , a great experience.

Yelp
We slipped in without reservations completely unaware of the menu, dress code or prices as it was raining quite hard and our other preferred dinner place was booked up for the evening. While we felt under dressed the staff went out of their way to serve us beyond what we would have expected. They were very helpful with the menu due to our lack of familiarity with the various types of starters, appetizers and main courses (as we're tourists and we very much looked and acted like it.) They suggested great food and wine pairings and made us feel very comfortable. They even brought us each a complimentary small dessert when we said we were too full to order anything. It wasn't what we set out for this evening but we were pleasantly surprised by the service and how delicious all the food was. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a slightly more upscale place to eat and have the extra money to spend.

Yelp
Skip this one. Unpleasant experience. We would not go back and felt like we wasted our money here. Pressured by waiters for tips on multiple occasions as we neared the end of our meal. Clearly, they were trying to take advantage of us being tourists. This was our 4th time visiting Italy and Rome and have eaten in all different kinds of restaurants (high-end like this and very casual mom and pop places) so my wife and I feel comfortable saying you can find far better places to have a fine dining in experience in Rome than at il Sanlorenzo. Food was above average as you would expect from a place like this, but we had much better pasta and fish at several other restaurants in Rome and specifically Trastevere during our multiple visits.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to have a fancy fish dinner while we were in Rome and this place ended up being one of my most memorable meals. Sadith our waiter gave us a phenomenal wine recommendation which tells me that their Sommelier really knows his stuff. My friend got the lobster tortellini and I had the seared tuna. Best tuna I have ever had! All the little pastries and bread that they serve are beyond delicious. Would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a perfect fish dish that really lets the fish shine. Definitely, check it out if passing through Rome, I can promise you it will not disappoint.
