"You may be surprised to discover such a fine place in a business park, but you will immediately be transported to the Mediterranean. You can enjoy an aperitif in the relaxed lounge looking out over the pretty garden. Martin Benninger cooks up classic cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. Stripping a dish down to its essence does not mean sacrificing depth of flavour – take, for instance, the carpaccio of just-caught scampi paired with a delicately tangy champagne butter, shavings of raw mushroom and fresh chives. The interior is modern and elegant – in summer, with its glass front open, the conservatory almost feels like a terrace. The attentive and experienced front-of-house team also provide excellent wine recommendations, and the digital wine list is really well curated. Al Covo is a charming alternative – for pizza, pasta etc (Fri-Sun evenings)." - Michelin Inspector

Il Segreto - Italian restaurant near the Vatican

An unassuming restaurant with exceptional food and service. From the moment we walked in, the warmth and skill of the staff was evident -Tinsae, made us feel welcomed and introduced the food and the traditions of the restaurant to us through the experience We were gifted a champagne sipper and appreciated that the menu is simple, helping to make decisions without overwhelm. First we chose calamari. It came without sauce (didn’t need it!), light, perfectly crisp, & warm. Then had the caccio y pepe and mushroom ravioli which were both better than any pasta we’ve ever had. (The staff carefully packed up leftovers from each course so we could keep enjoying, & were patient as we don’t speak Italian). For mains we had pulpo w pumpkin (I can’t recommend enough!!!) and the tagliata with aged lardon topping, honey, & walnuts. Unexpected details making these pieces just perfect The desert was a small cheesecake, that had little tiny shards of ice in it that made it refreshing & light. Everything was made in-house that day, from the pasta to the sauces, the lardon had been aged for 3 years, however… and you get to see it displayed in the restaurant. Just cannot say enough good about this place for an Italian food newbie or someone waiting to see the classics perfected. Thank you, team!

From the moment we walked in, the staff were warm and welcoming. We were offered complimentary champagne and a delicious little Italian omelette from the chef, which was such a nice touch. The bruschetta, meatballs and octopus were all absolutely outstanding and full of authentic flavour. The team were engaging, the atmosphere modern and comfortable, and the food genuinely impressive without being pretentious. A beautiful meal and definitely worth trying.

We came because of the good review and the overall experience was lovely! Sid was really friendly and gave us welcome drinks, regularly checked on us and was so attentive. Top notch service from him! We didn’t wait too long for the food, which were delicious (especially the tiramisu), and we also liked the ambience of the restaurant.

We had the best experience here after visiting the Vatican, and a huge part of that was thanks to Sid. He’s one of those servers you remember long after the meal. Funny, genuinely personable, and full of energy in a way that makes the whole place feel even more alive. He didn’t just take our order—he guided us through the menu like a friend who really wants you to try the good stuff. And the food? unreal. Fresh, full of flavor, and easily some of the best we’ve had in Rome. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after the Vatican—just a few steps away, no stress, and you instantly feel taken care of. If you come here (and you should), ask for Sid. We left smiling, happy, and already talking about coming back. Highly recommend.

It is the best restaurant that we have ever been in Rome. Exceeded all our expectations. The food was so delicious, each bite was a peace of heaven. Congratulations to the chef, his restaurant is worthy of a Michelin star. Thank you princess for an excellent service. We will always remember how amazing our dinner was in Rome.

Chose Il Segreto based on ChatGPT’s recommendation as the top restaurant near my accommodation by the Vatican, and it did not disappoint! The prices are very budget-friendly, but the quality of the food is truly superb. All the staff are genuinely kind and approachable. A special mention to Sir Jan, who served my meal and even offered me a welcome drink. I mentioned it was my birthday, and the entire team surprised me by singing Happy Birthday and giving me a free dessert. It was such a memorable experience. I will definitely come back with my family and friends soon. Kudos to the whole team!

My friend booked us a pasta and tiramisu cooking class here and it was an incredibly fun experience! Being a group class--while it can be intimidating being with strangers, the staff are dedicated to making the experience easy and excel in getting folks to open up. There was a lot of music, dancing, jokes, and limoncello! Thank you so much to the manager/owner, Eddy, and Sid for making the experience memorable and fun. The food is delicious, the portions and alcohol are incredibly generous, and it was a highlight of our Rome trip. I highly recommend this cooking class and the general restaurant--it is a must visit!
