With less than 1.5 days in downtown Denver, I wanted to be selective about where to eat. That strategy doesn’t always work, but this time it went reasonably well at Illegal Pete's.
I stopped in with about two hours to spare before my train. Even though I arrived just before noon, it took a little over 20 minutes in line to reach the register. I ventured away from the usual steak or chicken and ordered the fish burrito, loading it up with just about everything—black beans, brown rice, tomato, lettuce, and more. How can you say no to any of that?
It seems they cook the fish to order (possibly fried), which added roughly another 15 minutes before my burrito was ready. Lesson learned: if you’re coming to Illegal Pete's for lunch on a tight schedule, plan for a longer wait or you might be late to your next appointment.
I liked the burrito. The fish was there, though it was hard to gauge how much since I had to eat quickly to catch my train out of the city and there was so much other ingredients. Overall, it was good—nothing extraordinary—but I’d still choose this place over Chipotle or other chains. Friendly staff (not sure about the bar staff), local vibe, very crowded and clearly popular. No regrets.
Finally, the burritos are huge and could easily carry you through the day if, like me, you tend to eat just one meal a day.
