OVERVIEW:
Took my 11 year old daughter here on a whim to try something different in town. The building for the Illuminarium shares a parking lot with Area 15, but is its own building across a small street - they are not physically connected. Parking was kind of tight because it shares the lot, but we found a decent amount of parking further from the Area 15 entrance and closer to the Illuminarium entrance.
SERVICE:
Because we are local, we took advantage of the local discount by purchasing tickets at their main box office (front counter). How it works is that you get both features - for us it was "Lite Bright" and "Space." They are about an hour each, and alternating times so you can catch both, one after the other. For us we did Lite Brite at 6pm and Space at 7pm. You wait in line and someone scans your tickets, they give a small safety/rules briefing, and then walk you to the room.
THE EXPERIENCE:
When you walk in, there are already "waiting" projections. There was decent seating within the large "projection room," though there were definitely still people standing, unsure if by choice. When it started, it was pretty cool - you are surrounded by images on every side, including the floor. For example, there was an underwater portion, and if you got up and walked around, there would be a bubble trail behind you - very cool. I really enjoyed that in the Space one, it felt like you were on the surface of the moon, and you'd see astronaut boot prints trailing behind you as you walked around.
My daughter really enjoyed the Lite Brite show, which made the room look like a giant lite brite (with colored dots making the images), so it wasn't the high resolution imagery I was expecting, but that came into play with Space. There were little mini games during Lite Brite, but scoring was temperamental and the rules weren't clear for some games. We enjoyed Lite Brite, and thought we had to leave the room to line up for Space, but it turned out we just ended up walking back to the same room - unsure if that's the same for every show. Space started out pretty cool, with a moon landing scene. I loved that they had actual moon landing footage in a 'picture-in-picture' type of scene, with facts on the screens as well. However, by this point, we'd just done an hour show, and we were getting a bit bored/tired/hungry to finish sitting through Space, so we left early to eat.
RECOMMENDATION:
If you can get this at a discount and you have young children, I'd definitely recommend it. The young ones there really enjoyed this, or Lite Brite at least. Though we didn't finish Space, the graphics were visually stunning and it did make you feel like you were walking around on the surface of the moon, looking at the moon's mountains/skylines on the horizon. High quality projections and audio throughout for sure. It will take about 2 hours, I did find myself getting bored/tired towards the tail end of our 75 minutes there, but again, I was very thankful there were seats available to just relax and immerse yourself in the show.
