As Silicon Valley Turns Food Waste Into Profits, Small Farms Suffer | Eater

"Started by Ben Simon as a mission-driven startup, this company buys off-sized, misshapen, and slightly damaged fruits and vegetables and sells them in subscription boxes at roughly 30 percent below typical grocery prices. It scaled rapidly from a warehouse in Emeryville to a national business spanning multiple cities and commanding significant venture funding and a valuation in the hundreds of millions, while operating as a public benefit corporation that emphasizes a double bottom line. The model has appealed to consumers seeking to reduce food waste and save money, but has drawn criticism from food-justice advocates who argue the approach captures rather than creates value, may pull customers away from traditional CSAs and small farms, and risks reinforcing industrial overproduction by addressing waste at the end of the supply chain rather than at the point of production." - Stephen Satterfield

I’m sad to write this. But they have totally gone downhill and gotten away from the values that made them awesome when they first started. We signed up years ago when we were attracted to the idea of minimizing waste and saving some money. But there are items that come in plastic packaging that’s unnecessary and now what happens in grocery stores. If you forget to customize your box, they will add in a TON of stuff to your box, including a large percentage of things you’ve never ordered and don’t want. Our usual orders are around $75. A couple weeks ago I forgot to customize the box and the price came to $150, so double, and again it was full of a bunch of stuff I didn’t want. And the cherry on the cone was I decided to do a price audit and compared each item I received with the price at my local grocery store. Many items were actually more expensive from imperfect! At the end of the bill, I did end up saving $9, but that’s after paying $150! That’s not enough of a savings to put up with their BS. You can’t choose your delivery date and I hate that ours is on Thursday. They used to collect the aluminum bags and ice packs that come with the refrigerated stuff, you leave it on your porch and when they deliver your box they take that stuff back. But they are no longer doing that. So you’re not saving much money by using them, the quality of produce definitely varies, and you end up with a bunch of stuff you don’t want if you’re not on top of it, and you have way more trash. And it might get delivered on a day of the week that you don’t prefer. I’m over this and cancelled my subscription today. It’s a bummer, the idea behind it is cool but they’ve totally ruined themselves.

What was once a great service is now just endless email spam and food we didn't want. The quality of the food varies. Delicate produce is often damaged by being roughly handled. If you fail to customize your order, prepare to pay $100 to clear out their warehouse of excess stock. Maybe some households eat a dozen apples a week. We don't. And their notification system has been broken for years without recourse. Meanwhile, now they want an annual fee. :/

I've been an Imperfect customer for over 3 years and have always been impressed with their seasonal produce and variety of grocery staples. Their "new & fresh" items also help nudge me be a more adventurous cook and branch out from my 'go-to' meals.

I live in Seattle and sad that I have to drop Imperfect from 5 to 2 stars. When I enrolled two years ago it was great but the last year and half has come with errors in almost every box and I am now cancelling deliveries for the next 6 months before I give them one more shot to see if they change their reliability standards. Instead of seeing real concern and changes all I get are automated courtesies and a refund but I should not have to micro manage the inventory and refund process for 6 out of 10 orders. This experience has been best described by another review from Christianne, which I will copy here: "I really wanted to support this company and their mission, but every week it gets harder. Every week I have to take inventory of what’s included in my box because every week there are missing items that if I don’t send a message I will be charged. I don’t have the double charges others have experienced but I do have the following issues regularly- * missing items and still charged * incredibly poor packing, milk container on top of bread, eggs, cilantro at bottom of the box, broken eggs, grape tomatoes all over box, etc. * delivered boxes placed in many different areas - twice we couldn’t find them due to being placed on driveway behind car or at neighbors house. * incorrect items sent. * occasionally soft and badly bruised veggies and fruit. Today our box was delivered and once I saw it was only one when usually we have two I knew something was up. All our veggies and fruit was missing, a complete box not delivered!! This is the day before Thanksgiving where we were counting on many of these items for our dinner. Now we need to try and get those items at the store on Thanksgiving day. Every week is turning into a gamble. We’ve been so loyal and patient but I just don’t see the promises of improvement. The biggest issues seem to be packing, order fulfillment, and delivery. Our interactions with the CSR have been pleasant and responsive but still no improvements. It actually seems to be getting worse. I like the products but sadly if things don’t get better soon I will have to leave. It must get old for IF to apologize daily...turn it around guys!!" --------- (original review, two years ago 5 stars) Love this service, love what you're doing- most of all I love that you take back the boxes!!! Prices are competitive and the offerings are wonderful and plenty (produce as well as non-produce). Also appreciate the flexibility for skipping orders when necessary and the fact that there's no membership dues/fees or required minimal order. Been a customer for about a year now and will continue to buy for some time. Highly recommend!

If I could have rated Imperfect Foods as a zero I would have. Disorganized, unable to meet deadlines and no intercommunication network structure within the Company. Some Customer Service agents were exceptional but mired in an ineffective system...some rude. Orginal delivery supposed to be the 9th, pushed back by IF to the 11th, then told I would have to reorder on Friday for a 23rd delivery...ultimately received a surprise inadequately packaged rotting, stinking (bruised & battered contents inside) package on the 15th that shipped on the 13th. Asked for a full refund along with dissolving my subscription with this Company. Great concept....terrible execution of business processes.

Absolutely love this box! It’s so crazy that stores won’t accept certain foods cause they’re too small or “ugly”. This has been so convenient for me being alone and not wasting food! Sometimes I over shop when I go to the stores. I get exactly what I need with this subscription box! So Fun to have random items they choose or adjust to my liking.

I’ve been using Imperfect Produce for several months now and I truly love it. I receive a Large box every other week containing a mix of fruits and veggies. I never opt to customize as I really enjoy the element of surprise. It makes cooking extra fun as it enables culinary creativity in free-styling meals. The staff that I’ve engaged with are all very polite and professional. Overall, I’ve had a great experience and fully endorse this company. #cookingugly

I'm grateful I discovered Imperfect Produce! I'm happy with both the quality of food and the price. I don't care if my produce is "pretty," because once it's cooked or thrown into a smoothie, it all looks the same; but everything I've received has looked great, if not better than what I'd get at the farmers market. Key things I've liked: • They offer both organic and conventional produce options; you can mix and match as well. •You can customize each order. •Weekly and biweekly delivery options, you can skip • Produce box size can be changed (I started with XL and moved down to a Large, I could change it each week if I needed to) •Each box includes directions on how to properly store the produce; which helped me realize I was doing this incorrectly for many items (we now keep this on our fridge). Obviously, I highly recommend this service! Tip: With a quick google search, you can easily find discount codes for your first order.
