17 Atlanta Restaurants to Explore Dishes From Around the African Continent

"Moroccan restaurant Imperial Fez relocated to Berkeley Lake in 2020 after 30 years in Buckhead. But people can still expect to enjoy the same food and festive atmosphere, which features belly dancing and hookah, at its new location in Gwinnett County. Sit on plush pillows while indulging in a five-course meal that includes appetizers, kebabs or fish dishes, and dessert. It begins with an old Moroccan custom of washing hands with warm water infused with fresh lemon juice and rose water. A full menu of a la carte dishes, including tajines, Moroccan couscous, and kebabs, is also available. Reservations highly encouraged." - Carolyn Desalu

This was a sooo good, I highly recommend this place!!!!….. the food was great, excellent atmosphere and on top of that I liked the owner/chef going to our table to make sure everything was good, he was very attentive and when we left he also came to say good bye, I thought that was very nice of him, taking the time with customers treated us like if we were long time friends, I loved it!… again, thank you so much for a great time, my husband and I really enjoyed it.

Google
Literally the worst experience I've had in a long time. The belly dancing volume is set to 11 so you can't have a single conversation while it is going on. The servers have to be waved down to get anything. The cold appetizer plate took over an hour to get. And it was pita from a bag, inedible babaghanoush, hummus that tasted like bad chickpeas and dolmas from a jar. For $25 too. The beef tenderloin skewer is $45 for 2 overcooked skewers. The chicken kebabs have zero seasoning. Avoid this place like the plague

Google
I tried Moroccon food first time in Disney and that turned out to be unexpectedly top notch for me, i was looking for a Moroccan restaurant from sometime after that in Georgia. This restaurant popped up in my google maps search but since I saw that prices were a little high so thought to try it on some special occasion. Me and wifey came on my birthday, we did online reservation which was honestly not needed and it costs 5 dollar per person. I was surprised that on Saturday the restaurant was not packed. Anyways they had quite good authentic ambiance of Morocco, i am not a fan of seeing belly dancing but its part of their culture so it happens there. Anyway coming back to food, our server was nice lady and she recommended us that we go with 5 course meal if we want to try authentic experience so we did that. I chose Lamb shank meal and wifey selected Lamb chops. The 5 course meal was auite good experience, we liked almost everything. Also if I compare it with my Disney experience, it was not even close to thar but let’s not compare for now. There were some pros and cons both that’s why I am keeping this review to 4 stars. Pros: Good Authentic Ambience, Aurhentic Food, Nice Staff, Good Portions Sizes, Good Service Cons: Quite expensive, Mandatory gratuity even for 1 person, reservation online costs money, location is not very ideal. Below are some dishes we ordered with individual ratings (Since I ordered 5 course meal, the items are same for everyone except main meal) Orange Drink (forgot name of it) : 7 / 10 Purple Drink: 7 / 10 Soup: 7 / 10 Starters: 7.5 / 10 Appetizers: 8.5 / 10 Meal (lamb shank): 7 / 10 Meal (lamb chops): 8 / 10 Dessert: 5 / 10 Flavor - Star -7.5 / 10 Authenticity of Flavor - Star - 8 / 10 Cleanliness - Star - 8 / 10 Service - Star - 8.5 / 10 Value for Money - No Star - 6 / 10 Suggestion for owner: You guys are doing great, I would just recommend that you should reconsider mandatory gratuity for less that 5 people group. Suggestion for customer: They have belly dancing going on, so if you have kids, you might not prefer coming with them. They have mandatory gratuity so that adds up as well. Above format would be best to justify my review so i will hopefully continue to keep this for all my next reviews.

Google
This place is a gem and has a long standing great reputation! Customers continue to come here for years. When we were here recently we heard the table next to us say they had been to the Imperial Fez 10 years ago and wanted to make sure they came again on their recent visit to Georgia. I have been coming to this restaurant since I was a child when it used to be in Colorado. Then I was lucky enough to find it in Georgia when they relocated here years ago. There is really nothing like it I have found anywhere else (other than Morocco). The owners really care about the quality of their service and food. The food is amazing and decadent - so many great options, its always hard to choose. The 5 course meal is the way to go. The weekends have entertainment with belly dancers, if you want a more boisterous evening. The restaurant really celebrates the atmosphere of bringing people together through great food!

Google
10/18/2024 - DO NOT GO HERE. NO BELLY DANCERS ON FRIDAY EITHER. I am exponentially disappointed. I live nearly an hour and came to visit this place. I spent $150 (2 people, didn't even get alcohol). And I feel like they owe me $250 for my meals, my time, my premium gas, and bearing witness of this place. It says online dancers Fri and Sat. LIES. I arrived at 6 and left at 8, no entertainment, they kept lying about the time of arrival and pushing it back. Never showed. Then said she was in traffic, 1 hours late for work is no longer a traffic issue, that's an attendance concern. The food I ordered was cold, they came to fix it, and brought it back barely warm. I was celebrating my husband so I paid the $150 and didn't want to ruin his night, but I can only warn y'all DO NOT GO HERE for expensive food, cold food, and no entertainment. I hate false advertisement. I have a mind to call Chase and dispute this charge.

Just Convinced

Google
This Moroccan restaurant is truly amazing! The ambiance is top-tier, creating a wonderful setting for our family birthday celebration. Our waiter went above and beyond, delivering a fabulous dance performance for the birthday celebration that even outshone the talented belly dancers. The five-course meal was delectable, offering a delightful culinary experience. The friendly staff, great food variety, and lively atmosphere make it an excellent choice for a memorable meal and celebration.

Google
I had been to this restaurant at their Buckhead Location many times in the past, but for the first time, I got to visit them in their new location . The owner is an amazing guy. Friendly and very much hands-on after so many years. The food is unique, rich, and aromatic. Abundant and great quality. The dance show and playlist were amazing, and we watched audience participation and celebration of a birthday! Allow 80 plus per person if you go with a five course meal. Yet there are less expensive but delicious options!

Mamatha Gavini

Google
So I had been to the original location years ago in buckhead and one of my friends scheduled this and I had no idea they had moved to Duluth. Saturdays is a 5 course dinner only and the food was great! I had the Jerusalem artichoke and cauliflower as my entree and it was great. The drinks are great as well. But the belly dancing is the reason I loved. She was a great dancer super nice and tried to get everyone involved.

Yelp
The place is really nice. Very traditional Moroccan vibe and foods the staff is great and they try to make you feel welcome. Only issue is the place is a bit far. But it's really nice restaurant if you want an authentic and nice place to enjoy

Yelp
Food was very pricey for what you get. It was not bad but it was far from amazing. To make the price worse, they charged per person at table for appetizers. We ordered 2 appetizers $10 each (hummus and a favs bean dip) our bill came out with $40 for appetizers because we were 4 people. The amount given for each appetizer did not suggest it was 2 servings. The ambiance is nice but was a bit weird when we arrived at 6:00. Only 1 other table of people. Our waiter then said they would be slow because he was the only waiter. Appreciated being notified but it was 6:00. Seems like your staff would be there by then. But regardless it was the food and price of it that resulted in low rating.

Yelp
Bad does not even begin to cover this place. I have had better food off the bathroom floor at a McDonald's and better service at 3am in a Waffle House. 1.5 hours to get a cold appetizer platter with hummus that tasted like vomit. Chicken and beef kebabs that were tough, dry and flavorless. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to eat a meal here.

Sepideh S.

Yelp
This is noting close to what the imperial Fez used to be. The location, the low quality decor, the modified menu and the absolutely painful service has destroyed this place. We reserved a party of 10, for 7 pm, by 9 pm we were just getting our drinks and salads. Finally last part of our food was served around 10:30 pm, the food was brought to us at different times and our party couldn't really eat together Very disappointed with our experience

Norma S.

Yelp
I want to say that this was my first time trying this restaurant. My friends and I really wanted to experience something different. So we thought hey why not Moroccan. The food is pricey and not all of it was delicious. The one thing that made us really enjoy our experience was the belly dancer. She came and made 3 shows and in the end got all the crowd up to dance!! The staff were all super friendly. They asked us if we liked the food we were too shy to say we did not being that maybe this is just simply how Moroccan food is. Ambiance was intimate and I liked the coziness of it, the restaurant looked clean. In summary: I liked the ambiance, the staff, even the appetizer and my soup. I did not like my entree. My friends also did not like their entree. The only one who ate her meal was the one who ordered chicken kabob. At the end they give you a delicious mint tea with a small piece of baklava. Beautiful and different experience.

Yelp
No idea who these other people are but this was a great dining experience! We had the 5 course menu and it felt like 15! So satisfying and delicious. Ben was an excellent host. Unforgettable actually. He takes his time to walk you through the menu and make great choices. I really appreciated his sincerity to ensure we had a good meal. The appetizers were various and all delicious. The lentil soup and the bread was totally heart warming and comforting like something a grandparent would make for you on a rainy day. The pallet cleanser was ahmazzzzzzzzingggggggg! So fresh and tantilizing to the tongue. I had the lemon pepper crispy fish and wanted to kiss the chef. It was absolutely delicious. Ben crafted all the cocktails and mocktails. It is so hard to choose and we ended up with 2 pitchers. Very good to the last drop. The portions are plentiful and worth every cent. I will absolutely go back again when I feel like having something special. As a vegetarian I was pleased with the options and did not feel like I was missing out.

Yelp
Outstanding menu and service. Absolutely worth the price. I loved everything that we ordered.

Yelp
This experience is just not for me. I appreciate the attempt to bring a cultural experience to the area, but the food, in my opinion is low quality. The prices are quite high, but a portion if that is most likely to pay the belly dancers. It's a novel experience, and fun, but I would have preferred better food. We eat at middle eastern restaurants quite often, and there are simply more places that do this better. We did have a good time, but did not enjoy the food. Your experience might be different, and I believe we should give every restaurant a fair chance, but at these prices and quality, I will not return. The service was good and attentive, and I have no issues with waitstaff. I do have to say that the hot tea at the end is good, but in all honesty I was probably just happy the evening (and the repetitive blaring music) was over.

Christopher C.

Yelp
Amazing food! Really enjoyed myself and the service was fantastic! They have a Belly Dancer who is amazing.

George W.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was knowledgeable and the ambiance was great. We had a great time. If you're 50 or older opt for a table your knees will thank you. Trust me.

Cerisinc C.

Yelp
The food was terrific. Everyone agreed that the taste was quite delicious. Two stars are due to the price. I won't be back on my dime. While I have the ability to pay, I can't reconcile over $300 for what I got, of which one was a kid's meal. Somehow, the $35 on the menu turned into $60 on the receipt. Considering the price point, the portions were either too small or generally disproportionate. The prepared foods were essentially commodities, nothing fancy like caviar or truffles. Chicken, beef, and lamb are all reasonably priced ingredients. So why the price hike? No entertainment. I guess there was supposed to be a dancer, but ??? The service was acceptable as we were literally THE ONLY PEOPLE in the PLACE, and that should have been a red flag. The menu wasn't confusing until the waiter "clarified," which did nothing to help clarify it. Again, I had the entire place to myself, so I was comfortable. Gratuity, I normally pay 20% or more, but forcing me to 18% is your loss.

Yelp
Imperial Fez is a delightful culinary experience that takes you to a different time in Morocco. They offer you a bowl of water to wash your hands even before the dinner and a hot towel with lemon after. Excellent service from beginning to end. I took my mom and some family members here for her birthday dinner and we had an excellent time. We ordered an assortment of dishes including the lamb shank, Mediterranean chicken, Grilled Kabob and Cornish hen. The dishes were savory and flavorful. We finished off the night with their signature hot tea and they brought out a dessert for my mom's birthday. The belly dancing and fire show was fun entertainment.

Bob L.

Yelp
Welcome long repast venue, with floor show (bellydancers) and an MC who presents the welcome to the evening's diners in 5 languages... wear your finest loungewear for a comfortably elegant dining experience. Maintain your pedicure as it is also shoeless on the carpets.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
The owners really put a lot of care into getting the ambiance right with the decor and lighting. Love the five course menu! They also have belly dancers and encourage audience participation. This was a wonderful dining experience for Mother's Day! I would definitely come here again!

Yelp
We used to go the the previous location for "fancy night out" fine dining and it was always amazing. Went to the new location last week and ended up having to leave. Should have known something was wrong when only 2 tables seated at 6:30 pm and the place was empty. The host said he'd be our server which was fine but then he never came back. Ordered 2 appetizer dips that should be served room temp or warm, but both had been clearly pre-plated much earlier and stuck in fridge. Husband ordered a simple dirty martini and it was terrible. How does one mess up that simple of a drink? I ordered lamb tagine and he ordered lamb cutlets. His lamb chops arrived looking grey, clearly having been reheated and didn't even taste like it had been cooked that day. My dish was similarly disappointing and the couscous tasted like the instant kind in the supermarket. We were not going to pay close to $50/plate for these entrees so we looked for our host/server, but he was in the corner MAKING OUT WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND LIKE A TEEN. Finally got his attention and shared the feedback. He went to complain to the belly dancer who mist be management and who came over and started chewing us out and making a horrific scene. We paid for the terrible appetizers/drinks and left. Sorry guys, this was a HORRIBLE experience. They even used to have rugs on the floor so your legs didn't get cold on the floor seats, but now just bare tile. Everything about this place changed and now it is a high priced disappointment. Won't be back.

Steve H.

Yelp
If you remember the old Buckhaed location you should know this is nothing like it. Atmosphere is similar, but the food is certainly not. Everything tastes likea ot was cooked days before and reheated. The lamb is overcooked and tough and the rice and couscous taste boxed. Service is friendly. We left before the entertainment, so I can't speak to that. There are way better places to overpay for restaurant food.

Alexus S.

Yelp
I love love the experience the lamb shank was delicious! The belly dancer omg she was amazing! I would give her all my money if I could!
google avatar

Mercedes H.

Yelp
So, this is a hard pass for me. We'll start with the dessert because that's supposed to be the best part of the meal. The baklava ($7) is the driest I've ever had. The baklava itself was not sweet and then they drizzled it with cherry flavored syrup. We got the grilled combo ($36) to share. The beef and lamb kekob's tasted exactly alike. The shrimps were large but extremely over cooked. The chicken was moist and the lamb cutlet was tasty but on the well side. The rice was dry and not tender. However, the spring mix salad was pretty good. The eggplant dip ($6) was pretty good. Probably the best thing we got. The strawberry lemonade was mostly strawberry syrup and very little lemonade.
google avatar

Jorge D.

Yelp
Overpriced restaurant with few options to customize your meal. Was made to order the 5 course meal even though I didn't want the salads, soup, chicken pie or desert.
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
We had a fun date night while on vacation from California. The experience was unique and engaging. Pros: - Authentic feeling Décor - Clean - Reasonable Price for Meal - Fun Belly Dancer - Excellent 5 Course Immersive Experience - Accurate Service - Yummy food Cons: - Cushions for Floor Seating are too soft - Belly Dancer "on break" too much - Rugs buckle and create trip hazard - No Moroccan themed cocktails Suggestions: - More Belly Dancing/ Dancers - Carpet Tape to fix the buckling - Hired mixologist to create themed drinks - Firmer seating cushions

Yelp
My wife says this Crispy Chicken taste better than it looks. We are internationally traveled, and have eaten all over the world. We rank this Restaurant as one of the top world wide. The owner Rafik is personal and attentive. Even our new server was phenomenal. You must try this Restaurant.

Kann N.

Yelp
Extremely expensive after adding all the gratuity, service charge, credit card fees, etc. The portion is so small that we left starving. Food takes forever to be made and tastes quiet bland.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I was super excited to get dressed up, and celebrate our anniversary, only to be disappointed. We were seated in good time, but they forgot about us. We sat there for thirty mins looking around. Finally, someone came by and apologized. We finally got to order. The food came out i. Good time but we did not get drinks till we were done with dinner. We ordered scotch never got that. The cheesecake never came. It was to the point the waitress told us the meal that we didn't eat was on them. I hope it was a bad night for them, but everyone was confused. I might be willing to give it another try. I was disappointed, and decor could of been better.

Ian M.

Yelp
Had my birthday here a few weeks ago so this review is a bit late. Imperial Fez has had a reputation in Atlanta for many years, and Moroccan cuisine has a global reputation. I am pleased to say that both are well deserved. It's not every day that I eat a truly astonishing meal and also get to discuss medieval poetry with staff. I will spend the rest of my cooking life trying to replicate the Lamb Mrouzia at home. As far as I can tell, most negative reviews come from folks who expected Lebanese food from a Moroccan restaurant or tasteless simpletons who couldn't handle unfamiliar flavor combinations. Isn't that the whole point of trying new cuisines? Everybody needs to know about Moroccan food and this is the place to find out.
google avatar

Alyse D.

Yelp
My husband and I have been going to Imperial Fez for 3 years for our anniversary and always enjoy the wonderful service romantic environment and special treatment to make memories. The food is always delicious. Tender meat and perfectly seasoned. If you want a full Moroccan dining experience get the 5 course meal with the entree of choice. This is the perfect place for a special night out. This was our first time at the new location, it is still beautifully Moroccan decorated and great service. We did enjoy their choice of cocktails and mocktails that was a new addition to their menu.
google avatar

Shelby D.

Yelp
$25 dollar minimum for parties of 6 or more. Set menu $55 for parties of 10 or more. Beautiful location and the belly dancer was entertaining. Chicken kabob dinner was very dry. Corn was full of black pepper. I would not return for food.
google avatar

Tyler J.

Yelp
Went with a large group of 12 and everything was perfect. Our waitress was awesome and on top of everything. The drinks were delicious and strong. Food was amazing and all 5 courses had something new to offer. The dancer was amazing and we had so much fun dancing with her. The seating is quite low so it was a bit of a challenge getting people in and out of the tables but it was fun and added to the experience. Would recommend to anyone in Norcross

Jason J.

Yelp
Transport yourself to a Morocco and enjoy a rich cultural experience along with fantastic food. We celebrated the kids school year end here and everyone was delighted with my restaurant choice. The food was awesome, fun belly dancing and Moroccan decor made you feel like you're actually in Morocco. The food is authentic, delicious and plentiful. It's a family run restaurant and I was glad to support a local small business. Come with an open mind and empty stomach.

Thecla H.

Yelp
Celebrated my birthday with a large group of friends here in January . Loved the atmosphere and entertainment. The food was really good! Giving 4 stars because the service was slow but I understand they were trying their best with such a large party and limited staff .

Ashleigh J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and love the owners! The crispy fish was a hit but everything tastes amazing.

Asma A.

Yelp
Great place. Good food. I love the 5 meal course. It's ab experience overall. I recommend it for when you have guests or celebrations.

Yelp
I went there three years ago when they were in Buckhead and I loved it. Went tonight. They moved to Gwinnett And hated it. The service was so bad stop and slow. The hostess was in jeans and a T-shirt. The food was very bad, bland. We had gone there as a date night Expecting fun,I had a terrible time. Never going there again

Yelp
I had a wonderful experience with my two daughters. The food, ambiance, and service were excellent. From the moment we walked in the door Ben took great care of us. He patiently explained the menu and pricing. I strongly encourage you to try one of his personally crafted drinks. Yummy! We had the five course meal and selected lamb, lemon pepper fish, and chicken as our entrees. My daughters hadn't been to the restaurant since they were minors when they didn't eat anything. This time they devoured the lentil soup and couldn't stop talking about the flavor of the entrees. Ben remembered something I told him when we first walked in and made sure to make us feel special. I hadn't seen my daughters in several months and we decided to have dinner to celebrate. Most restaurants would've ignored this seemingly small matter that was so important to us. Not Ben! He made sure it was a big deal and brought us delicious drinks, cake, and tea to celebrate. And, he even had a special song played to honor the occasion. I highly recommend the carrot cake. Absolutely delicious! Thank you Imperial Fez for an awesome experience. I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in town.

Renee J.

Yelp
It was our Anniversary and we had an AMAZING time!! The staff makes you feel just like family.. They are the sweetest, most kind, attentive group of people!! Rita is an absolute darling! Farid is the best mixologist Ever!! He made us a drink that was absolutely Fantastic!! The cook/owner came out and sat and talked with us as if we knew each other For years!!! The food was impeccable!! We wanted for nothing!! They made me remember good service still exist!! I even got to dance with the belly dancer!! We had THE BEST night ever!! I HIGHLY recommend!! ...We are already ready to go back!!! Thank you so much again and we'll see you soon!!!

Yelp
What a great time! Took the kids there and they loved the food and belly dancers. Excellent service, food was perfect. Kids loved the hand washing and sitting on the floor. My wife and I enjoyed seeing everyone have a good time.

Chris G.

Yelp
Dinner at the Imperial Fez was extraordinary. We got there a bit early and saw a belly dancer auditioning. To get a full experience we ordered the 5-course traditional Moroccan meal. When starting the third course before the actual show, my date glowingly reported that she had never experienced a restaurant so wonderful in her life. (We are not young.) I expect to treasure memories of the Fez for years. Counting tax and tips, the meal cost only 5 times what we spent at McDonald's two nights earlier for a meal I do not remember in any detail. The Imperial Fez is the best value for money of any restaurant I have been privileged to enjoyed, exceeding top steak houses in Australia and noted seafood establishments in Singapore.

Judy K.

Yelp
We had delivery from here tonight. Chicken kabobs and lentil soup. Worst meal ever. The lentil soup had five lentils in it. The chicken kabobs were dry and tasteless. My friend had a salad with chicken, very small. It cost $18 for that small salad. I am very disappointed and will never order from there again. Once you get it home, it is too late to do anything about it. Of course, going there to eat us out of the question.

Vanessa P.

Yelp
Great food. Great ambiance. Good location. The belly dancer was great also. There was a good selection of food.

Sam K.

Yelp
Awsome decorations, full bar, belly dancer, plenty of parking are all great. However, 25 min to get a lamb couscous plate when there are only 2 more tables is not normal. When I finaly got the plate I was looking for the lamb. What I found was a fatty bone with what came up to be two bites of meat with a mountain of couscous and few vegetables as you can can see in the picture. Sorry guys, you did not pass this time.

Richard M.

Yelp
For my wife's birthday I want to take her somewhere other than the usual chain restaurants. I had heard her mention the Imperial Fez so I thought we would give it a try. I was a little worried whether we would like the food at a Moroccan restaurant but everything we ordered was delicious. The belly dancer was amazing and even got my normally shy wife and daughter to get up and move around a little. It was definitely more than just a meal it was an experience. We started eating out again last month but have been sticking mostly to chain restaurants. I'm really glad we ventured out and tried the Imperial Fez. I highly recommend it.

Kash S.

Yelp
Sorry ass food, bad service, stinky carpets, bad ambiance. And top of all that, OVERPIRCED. Very disappointed.
