21 Distinctive Portland Cafes That Roast Their Own Coffee

"Also known as In Joy, this café on the Southwest Park Blocks downtown is frequented by the students of Portland State University and other locals for its meticulous approach to the science of coffee brewing. Owner Wenbo Yang’s many certifications of coffee excellence are posted along the walls of this otherwise humble space, including his status as a Q Arabica Grader, Certified Golden Cup Technician, Authorized SCA trainer, and first-place winner of the 2020 U.S. Roasters Championship and 2023 Brewers Cup. Super Joy has a sibling at the roasting-cafe facility on nearby Southwest Yamhill; both serve drinks with beans mostly sourced from Asia and latte ingredients like osthmanthus, soy sauce, and taro." - Katrina Yentch, Nathan Williams

Stopped by to get a matcha and a pastry. I was a bit disappointed because there was barely any matcha. It was mostly almond milk. However, staff are nice and it’s a small, cute coffee shop.

Google
I stopped by this coffee shop to try their latte and croissant. Unfortunately, my experience was just average. The latte lacked a strong coffee flavor and felt more like milk with a little bit of coffee. It's not what I'm looking for in a good latte. The croissant was a letdown, too. It was hard, and it lacked the flaky texture I love.

Stayed at the Hotel Vance. Skipped the Starbucks in the lobby because OBVs. Walked to In Joy. Four perfect Cortados over 2 mornings. Wife's reported her lattes were delic too. We tried one other coffee place nearby but In Joy for the win.

Google
In J Coffee is a cozy, relaxed, small coffee shop on the corner of a building. It honestly feels hidden and I wouldn't blame you if you missed it. There are comfortable large seats to sit in or their really nice high top chairs looking out the windows. The coffee here is absolutely fantastic, some of the best I've had in Portland! I got a latte and I savored every sip. There are also some food and pastry options available to indulge in. The service was easy and nice, making this a spot I'll be returning to in the future. I highly recommend!!

Google
Happy to have stopped for a cup of coffee on this rainy day. If you enjoy great coffee look no further. I ordered an Americano with cinnamon and a latte, both were excellent! Check the evidence (empty cups) and stop by when you can.

Google
Small but quaint and chill. The Madeline bun I got was good and there’s a lot of fun things around the cafe to look at/through. Good place to work or read and the staff seems at peace. Overall love the vibe and will go back to try the drinks

Google
Very cozy coffee shop. They have interesting specialty drinks but I think they change them frequently because I haven't seen any beverages that other people mentioned. I tried "Rose Honey Latte" ($5.50 as of April 2022). It was good. The mix of two flavors created a very unique one! I also like the location; the coffee shop is right next to a green alley with lots of benches. Great service too!

Google
Okay I love everything about this place EXCEPT the fact that regular drip coffee starts at $4 for an 8oz which feels a little steep. All their other menu items are totally reasonable for a coffee shop trying to sustain itself in 2025 tbf, but I'd love a cheaper option for simple drip coffee so I could justify dropping by more regularly! Their breakfast sandwiches are bomb as hell, too. Thick slices of ham, good quality cheese, and really flavorful eggs. Idk where they're sourcing but the quality is great. Bonus points for Marsee's bakery products, too.

Yelp
The coffee was great! I had an iced white mocha with oat milk, very yummy. My partner got a hot vanilla latte with oat milk and also really loved it. The breakfast sandwich was pretty good as well but had a sauce that felt like a bit much for a morning sandwich. The vibes are alright. It's a small space but it's cozy, feels very hole in the wall. The service was friendly and fast. I think if we return we'll plan to just grab and go. Overall I would say, it's definitely worth popping in to try the coffee!

Yelp
Consider In J COFFEE a sanctuary for those with elevated coffee palates & a place where standards soar higher than your morning energy boost. Things you should know: I. PARKING You'll have to rely on good ol' street parking II. SERVICE The baristas here are the Da Vincis of coffee, juggling orders like seasoned pros. I recently threw Court a barrage of drink requests, and they managed to promptly pump out the orders--while still managing to engage in a chat that would make even your therapist envious. And guess what? For my fellow chess enthusiasts, there's a board waiting for your move between sips. III. QUALITY You want latte art? Check. Locally sourced pastries? Double check. Unique twists to your daily ritual? Just glance at their menu--seriously, the dirty chai latte just might rock your world. IV. CAPACITY Seating's tighter than your favorite skinny jeans, but fear not! The golden hour to come here is at 11 am--a sweet spot where you can order your bev without waiting in a line.

Yelp
drink: 3/5 service: 3.5/5 ambiance: 3/5 from the outside, In J Coffee is a hole in the wall! walking in, my immediate thoughts were: cozy, not a place to study, and a place where people in the neighborhood come for their daily coffee. In J seems to update their seasonal drinks frequently, so the sea salt cream latte and the dalgona latte are no longer available (from other photos on yelp) :(. my friend and i ordered the 12 oz Honey Rose Latte and the Maple Oat Latte hot for the latte art! we expected the honey rose latte to have the rose petals on top like the other photos here on yelp, but we did not receive any which was a bit saddening. drinks wise, we found the flavor to be just okay. the winner for us was the Maple Oat Latte, as we could taste hints of the maple syrup but not so much espresso for both of the drinks. the rose latte tasted like warm milk with a hint of rose, so we were a little disappointed with how the drinks tasted. we also noticed that there was only a 25¢ difference between 12 oz and 16 oz! but we realized that too late before ordering the smaller size. not sure if we would be back to this spot for coffee, but i would come back to check out their seasonal drinks if one were to catch my eye.

Yelp
Perfect example of looks can be deceptive . we were initially disappointed when we came in because the place is small , unassuming and has that coffeeshop next door vibe . Jokes on us for being too quick to judge , because the coffee was loved by everyone in our group. We got multiple cups of the Sakura Latte, cortado and Flat white and everyone loved what they got . The Sakura Latte was light and sweet and had a distinctive lychee taste with Sakura . Tasted fantastic even though I am not a fan of the sweetened version of beverages. The space is small but there is seating good enough for a few people. The staff was kind, not too chatty or friendly but definitely very good at their job.

Yelp
Great coffee and bagel breakfast sandwiches. I especially enjoyed the latte that tastes like the rose Turkish delight-- Rose honey latte. So good that we had to stop by on our second PDX family trip and you know that there is no shortage of coffee shops here.

Yelp
Woke up on my first morning in Portland on a weeklong "vacation" (aka i had to wfh the first couple days) and decided to start here. It sits on a corner across from a cute green area and is in a very pretty part of town. When I got there at around 8a, I expected it to be very busy with a long line, but we beat the crowds, and had practically no wait. I brought my computer and planned to work from here, which was a great idea, as they had comfortable seating, outlets, everywhere, great lighting, and very fast Wi-Fi. I ordered one of their breakfast sandwiches, they have Megan cheese on an everything bagel, and was surprised by the first bite to taste thousand island sauce, which actually added an interesting and dynamic flavor profile I had not normally experienced with this type of breakfast sandwich. Delicious. I paired with an iced Ube latte, my first time seeing that flavor in a latte, and it really shone through, not only in the vibrant color, but in the very noticeable and present Ube flavor. It was part of a limited time summer menu. I absolutely loved it and it powered me through a good three hours of work that I got done diligently here. The staff is so sweet and friendly, as I can say about many people in Portland now. This would be my go to coffee shop for any work from home day I take again here. Loved it!! Thank you

Yelp
On the way to the to the Portland Farmer's Market, I spotted a small, unassuming coffee place. They make a mighty good latte! The coffee is strong & bold, I loved the syrup they used. The staff is friendly, quick & did nice art on my latte! If I lived in Portland, I would be there every day!
google avatar

Yelp
Having a breve decaf 'Sakura' latte: lychee rose flavored. Perfect temperature, texture of cream, flavor/roastiness of coffee. Small, cozy seating area with vintage furniture (upholstery!). Great music (Cpt Kangaroo, followed by Paul McCartney). Come!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely coffee place, quant and small with nice rich coffee. Is there a better coffee place like never- yes. This is still in the same league and worth stopping by! Support local !

Yelp
Portland, OR does unique like nowhere else. And in a cutesy space where white walls, a large mural in the back, tchotchkes and a sprawling plant rule, J is it with a chill vibe and super friendly service. Our Saturday dinner was so satisfying- all we needed were some hot beverages the next morning to start our day. Between my Almond Milk Matcha on a chilly morning, my daughter's Oat milk Cappuccino, her friend's coffee drink and my husband's decaf Iced Americano, all was well- except for that lonely pastry left as J ran out of everything else.

Yelp
Here in Portland for the week and I found the cutest cafe. I've been stopping by everyday for their soy matcha latte. Also, I think they've been trying out a new baker - there's been a $2 sample sale on the pastries. I've tried their butter croissant and banana bread. Both are great! You also know that a place is dog friendly. They have a bowl of dog treats at the register. Everyone's been really friendly!
google avatar

Kristi Y.

Yelp
my friends and i stopped here while strolling through the parks nearby. if you're looking for cozy and intimate, this is it! the menu is pretty standard, but with some asian-inspired/fun flavored drinks (red date latte, rose honey latte, pistachio latte). i tried the rose honey latte with oat milk, and it had a good combination of both flavors and wasn't too too sweet. their coffee is definitely strong and definitely gave me the energy to get me through the day.

Yelp
I had a great time here! This was my 3rd stop for the work day. I started at the office where there was major noise/construction, then I tried a different coffee shop. Their wifi was trash so I ended up here. As soon as I approached the register, I asked the kind soul working "DOES YOUR WIFI WORK" yes I was exasperated and felt like I was falling behind on my work. He assured me it did so I ordered a Nutella latte and settled in. I found this cafe surprisingly quiet for its size. You'd think any little noise would carry but it stays pretty focused and quiet here. The coffee was great, the bathroom was clean, the setting was nice for working and I'd go back!

Yelp
Cute little place with friendly staff, free wifi, spaces to work, and solid drinks. I came here after visiting the Portland Art Museum. I needed some caffeine and a place to grade for a bit. They have three small tables inside spaced out for working or dining in. (see my picture) The staff were really nice to me and everyone who came in. This really sets the tone for a space. They were welcoming and shared the space with all. Also, as of early Nov. 2021, they are taking customer's reusable cups, so bring your own to save the trash. I ordered a Rose Honey Latte with oat milk. There was no one else when I first came in so it came out fast and hot. It was sweeter than I typically like my drinks but that is my own fault for ordering something I've never had before. x_x They have a couple of gluten-ful snacks in a small case that looked good. Their wifi is strong and free. Ask the staff for the password. I was able to grade online without any issues in speed. They also have a single-use bathroom with a code. Next time: I'll try the HK Milk Tea (tea with hot milk).
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
Their fall menu is up, so make sure to check it out! However, they still have old favorites, so if you are looking for something familiar, you can have that too! Today I tried out both the Rose Honey, and ordered an old favorite, the Osmanthus Latte (now called the Chinese Floral Latte). Both syrups were on par with what I remembered and were just a great ode to Chinese flavors. Thank you for sharing Chinese flavors with our PDX community!

Lori B.

Yelp
I just got a large black coffee. Delicious. Atmosphere was chill. I bet the lattes are great, I will have to try one.

Yelp
This is a tough review. Funky little coffee shop near the PSU campus. The coffee is great, really good. We ordered a cappuccino, matcha, rose latte and breve latte. All were excellent. Here's where it's tough and I had been warned. The staff. Bad enough that the guy at the counter sneezed into his hand (obviously missed that day of preschool where they teach you to sneeze into your arm), then promptly picks up a cup and continues working. We thanked them as we left, neither one acknowledged us. If you want a great cup of coffee and don't care about friendly service, then this is your place, final answer.
google avatar

MK R.

Yelp
Super creamy lattes. Got the maple oat latte and a hazelnut soy latte. Both were really really tasty. Espresso was smooth and rich, flavors were not overpowering or too sweet.

Channon S.

Yelp
Lavender latte was smooth, rich, and had just the right amount of lavender. 4 stars just because the atmosphere inside is skippable-- 5 stars as a grab and go spot!

Yelp
Very cute little coffee shop on Clay Street next to South Park blocks. I came to Portland on vacation with my family and decided to take a stroll down some of the cute little parks in the middle of the city. Obviously, Portland is revered for its coffee shops and this happened to be the first one that we ducked into and we were not disappointed. We got a maple honey oat milk latte, and it was so delicious. Because of the maple and the honey there's no need to add any additional sweetener or anything it came out perfect. They also have a cozy little seating area in the back that sits about four different parties. It was a great recharge before getting out and exploring more of the city. They also like to had some tasty munchies which we will come back to try in the morning!
google avatar

Pratima M.

Yelp
A cute little coffee shop that's located right next to PSU -- we stopped by after the farmers market for a quick pick-me-up! The staff was super sweet and they made the drinks really quickly. It's a nice spot which seems like a hidden find with a cute ambiance inside. I got a hot chocolate and it wasn't anything super unique (kind of tasted like Swiss Miss) but my friend really liked her drink!
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Amazing spot! Can't believe it took me so long to come check this place out; the true definition of wasted years. Super friendly people who can make pretty lattes and delicious drip coffee. Oh, and their breakfast sandwich is the bomb! Perfectly toasted bagel with a sunnyside egg, tomato, cheese, delicious sauce and any add ons you would like. It's truly stellar. They also have a handful selection of housemade pastries. The maple, apple, and ginger scone that we tried was great. This place is really quality over quantity with it comes to their items. Lovely seating areas outside their shop. This might just became my regular spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Dropped by In J Coffee on a somewhat rainy morning to grab a coffee and wander a bit. I of course grabbed my usual basic drink -- a vanilla latte, hot. My drink was good and service was super friendly. I was definitely eyeing other things on the menu and can see myself going back to try more items. The interior is super cute, though on the petite side. I opted to order then wait outside and just keep my ears open for them to call out my order! Parking in the area is mainly street parking and there are some benches in the area if you want to grab and go sit somewhere. Overall, pretty good coffee at a reasonable price range and friendly service. Try it out if you are in the area!
google avatar

Young N.

Yelp
I thought the shop was really cute. Reminds Me of my favorite korean coffee shop back home. The decor is simple yet cute. The lady taking our order was really nice and cute. The person (man) who made our drinks was also very nice. He made perfect foam! It was velvety smooth. We ordered a vanilla and caramel latte. Both were really good, not too sweet which I love and espresso was well balanced. Will definitely come back before we leave Portland:)

Yelp
was walking around one of the nearby parks and stopped here for some coffee. i got their nutella latte as one of their specials and i liked that it wasn't super sweet, but you could still taste the nutella. i also liked that the nutella was mixed in with the espresso so there wasn't just a clump of nutella sitting at the bottom of my cup. the interior of the place is very nice and cozy and it seems like it would be a great place to get some homework done.
google avatar

Frank O.

Yelp
Cool little coffee shop with friendly service! Had a latte and a breakfast sandwich, both were great! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
An ok cup of coffee and an ok breakfast sandwich. They really need some sort ketchup packets though for that breakfast sandwich. Call me uncouth, but those two things just go together.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
I'd been wanting to visit here for awhile and was not disappointed when I finally did. The place is small but nice and has some outdoor seating. It's also right by the park blocks so there's park seating nearby. They have a variety of drink options, coffee and teas, with some seasonal selections. They also have pastries and breakfast bagel sandwiches so what's there to complain about!
google avatar

Loren W.

Yelp
Top 3 cold brews in the whole Portland-Metro area. I honestly just love everything about this place from top to bottom. They have such creative & unique seasonal drinks, the shop is cozy and well decorated, and the baristas/staff are always friendly and helpful. I recommend this place to everyone!
google avatar

Sahitya M.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with a great ambience. People here are so warm and the coffee was great. I ordered a Matcha latte and it was good. It was the first time I have ever had it and I kind of liked it but not so much. I would really like to explore all the mochas and lattes here. It is really close to PSU's farmers market
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Found them during the pandemic and really glad I did. Quality ingredients. Quality Baristas
google avatar

Andie B.

Yelp
Stopped by the other day during my visit to the PSU farmers market where I picked up their sea salt dalgona, a cold brew topped with this beautiful and sweet sea salt creama and topped with a little bit of cocoa powder! It honestly tasted like tiramisu in a cup! I was super impressed and will have to stop by again soon to try their other drinks!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast sandwiches. We tried the sausage and pastrami. They come standard on an everything bagel, with an egg and cheese. The sauce was outstanding. The service is great as well. This place can get slammed, but the staff hold it together nicely.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
My husband is a regular and I have been here a few times. Nothing but good things to say about this coffee shop! I absolutely love their Iced Matcha Latte. Tastes so fresh, perfect amount of sweetener and ice. I've also tried their seasonal Iced Rose Honey Latte and one of their pigs-in-a-blanket. Both delish! This is a great small business to support. Joe is very talented at his craft and very nice!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Terrific cup of brewed black coffee! Nice looking place, friendly staff, easily best $2.50 I've spent all week
google avatar

Dory V.

Yelp
Great customer service and great season recommendations! This was my first time costuming Downtown Portland and I saw how great the reviews were so I had to check it out! Definitely recommend if you also like to drink different and unique brew styles.
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
Hip and cool java joint. Nice Chinese groove to it. Coffee is legit and the owners are competitive roasters.
google avatar

Harmanpreet S.

Yelp
This place was soo cute!! It's in the more suburban area of Portland and is kind of tucked away so u really have to keep an eye out for it! The service is very friendly and the atmosphere is so serene! They have a lot of unique menu flavors and their all so delicious l! We tried the tarp, and salted Carmel's and both were probably one of the best I've had! Definitely recommend trying this place out!!!
google avatar

Esther J.

Yelp
Coffee decor to perfection. This Chinese craft, special coffee house is a treat. Got a cortado and last warmed pigs in a blanket Chinese style. Very peaceful but full indoors. Great to reflect and people watch through the windows.
google avatar

Betty H.

Yelp
I stumbled across this neighborhood cafe to grab a few drinks before a long car ride and was really surprised at how yummy the drinks were! I got the sea salt dalgona and hk milk tea, both were full of flavor and delicious. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Ethan B.

Yelp
After a few weeks of coming here, I'm quite sold. $3 for one of the best Americanos you'll have. Even if the roast isn't 100% what I'd pick, it's great quality, and the 12oz opens it up exactly the right amount to taste all the flavors of the bean. The moustached gentleman behind the counter has a great sense of humor and a lovely singing voice, which you might catch him occasionally using to hum along to the music (or even the music in his head, as the store's audio system sometimes cuts out randomly, which is more amusing than irritating). The young woman who works alongside in the mornings is a master of the barista craft, and both are always friendly and welcome faces. In short, great value, great coffee, great people.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!! Their coffee and breakfast sandwiches are amazing. The employees are so kind. I like that this place definitely follows social distancing, I felt safe picking up a coffee. Also, the little tables outside provide nice views. I recommend the honey rose latte and my partner recommends their London Fog.
google avatar

Kalong W.

Yelp
Stumbled into a cute, new corner cafe in SW Portland nestled into the PSU park blocks. Turns out they just opened two days ago! The owner, Joe used to work at Case Study and after winning multiple barista competitions and becoming a certified grader, decided to branch out! He's so cool, chat with him if you get a chance! I ordered a pour over, and it was excellent. 10/10 highly worth checking them out and supporting local
google avatar

Madeline F.

Yelp
Highly recommend this coffee shop! I believe I'd seen it mentioned on the downtown Portland Instagram account I think and had been keeping up with them on social media but finally got the chance to pop in today and my Carmel latte was delicious. Both baristas greeted my sister and I as we walked in and we were able to sit at the seating area while we waited and could see them diligently working on the very lovely latte art. They also told us about the different drinks and now we know what we'll be trying out next time. Lots of great options at this shop and good quiet spot for studying or just catching up.
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
Love that this new local coffee shop opened up so close to where I live! Especially since I don't drink coffee and their tea selection is huge! (Im looking at you, Coava...) I'm also lactose intolerant, so the wide variety of non-dairy milks is a huge plus. Their chai is one of my favorites in town, it's an Australian company that naturally sweetens the tea with honey, and it's a great balance of sweet and spicy. The owner is really sweet and super accommodating, he'll do anything to make sure your order is perfect. They also have a small selection of pastries and a few sandwiches, as well as boba and jelly tea! This spot is really worth a stop, whether you dine in or take to go. If you're like me, and prefer local to Starbucks, I highly recommend. (And their prices are comparable.)
google avatar

Matt E.

Yelp
Props to this place to still staying open for the neighborhood and doing so in as safe as way possible. People here are always respecting social distancing, and the barista is always sure to tell every customer that they have a giant hand sanitizer dispenser right by the cash machine. I pay with Apple Pay, hit the tip screen with my knuckle and sanitize my hands right away. It feels good to be able to get a good latte from a local business that I know is taking the coronavirus outbreak seriously.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
In J Coffee is probably my new favorite cafe here in Portland. To start, the coffee is delicious and has wonderful flavor. I've tried their latte and mocha, I loved both, but the mocha was amazing. The taste was the perfect amount of sweetness with the smooth flavor of coffee. As of today, I've stopped in to study twice. The atmosphere is calming and comforting. I hope to study here often because it is so close to campus and provides a great environment for st Addition: I can say with certainty that In J Coffee is my favorite coffee shop ever. With delicious mochas and matcha lattes, great staff, and a comfortable ambience, In J Coffee is a winner. They've also begun selling these delicious Pig in a Blanket hotdogs and mini cheesecakes! I love them. They're so delicious!
google avatar

Muriel N.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. Unassuming yet brews are top notch, superb service, all in all. I'm picky w' my americano and it was spot on (and they have a Sechuan Mocha? Are you kiddin me?). Don't miss that insane breakfast sandwich they have too. Killer bagel and perfect sauce. Super cheap. Gem. I'd come here every day if lived nearby

Yelp
I first tried this place when I had a Ritual credit to use and ordered a 16oz cold brew to go. It is very conveniently located near PSU and has a nice area to sit, talk and do some simple tasks on a computer. The cold brew was very good; a good balance of fruitiness and not overly bitter. It was also fairly light, and not syrupy like some smaller shops make theirs. A far step above Starbucks for sure. The few times I've been here the service has also been excellent, and there were no problems with my order via Ritual. A solid coffee shop, and a great addition to this particular part of Downtown.
