Everywhere Worth Eating Between San Francisco and SFO

"Yes, In-N-Out is really a SoCal thing. But it’s also the fast food chain that out-of-state visitors associate most closely with California. And the fact that the Millbrae location is so conveniently located, just a single exit up the freeway from SFO, is a big part of why a Double-Double Animal Style — with the fries well-done, please — is so many people’s first and last meal when visiting the Bay Area." - Lauren Saria, Luke Tsai

Google
In-N-Out never disappoints! Their burgers are iconic—perfectly grilled patties, fresh veggies, and that signature sauce that takes everything to the next level. The Double-Double is my go-to, and it’s always cooked to perfection. The fries are a must—crispy, golden, and even better when ordered “Animal Style” with melted cheese, grilled onions, and more of that amazing sauce. And don’t forget the shakes thick, creamy, and the perfect way to top off your meal. The staff is friendly, the service is fast, and the quality is unmatched. It’s no wonder this place has such a cult following. If you’re craving a classic burger experience done right, In-N-Out is where it’s at!

Google
I’ve never been: what an awesome experience. The employees made this great burger place spectacular!! They were friendly, clean, competent, even the gentleman taking care of the lobby added joy to my experience. This is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had ordering and obtaining classic American fare!!!

Google
This is my favorite fast food burger place. Menu is simple easy to chose from. Fries are fresh and hand cut right there in front of you :) there is a secret menu ;) I think for a meal you’re looking at $10- 12 not bad I always order from the secret menu 4x4 is my go too and animal style fries. The shakes are not outstanding… it gets the job done, it’s missing lots of flavor.

Google
A high end McDonald's, for the same prices as McD's. So incredibly impressed for my first time experience. Crew was happy and seamlessly having fun at their work. For all the rave, it's totally worth it. Highly recommend their signature: Double double animal style

Google
Just like I remembered! Burgers cooked perfectly. Fries are fresh. Great to show my wife this chain for the first time.

Google
Convenient location super close to the San Francisco International Airport. A must when visiting California. Friendly staff. The location could’ve been a little neater (some napkins strewn around and in the bathroom). Affordable, delicious fast food. Very thick milkshakes. Not my preferred consistency but the flavor was deliciously chocolaty, not watery.

Google
Great burgers, great service. Efficient and timely while also affordable. Always use fresh ingredients unlike other fast food places. The fries are known to be on the softer side, but using a trick I read online, asking them to double fry them makes them nice and crispy. Burgers are awesome as usual!

My boyfriend n I got food poisoning with a day of symptoms on christmas eve (12/24), cuz we ate here together before his fligh(12/23 3pm). We know we got food poisoning here because he was on the east coast vomiting his brains out and I was here despite eating different dinners. I got two double doubles and he got 2 3x1s with animal fries.

Yelp
great service! great food! usually busy. just parking is a bit difficult on weekends though

Yelp
I still remember my first In-N-Out burger and thought - it's good but why so much hype? Then you go back to McDonald's some time later (nothing wrong with McD's) and realize how much In-N-Out subconsciously elevated your standards :O So yeah, is it the best burger in the world? Unlikely - but for the price point, you get simple perfection of a burger - and can trust the ingredients are pure and fresh. There's no wonder why there's always a line here, even when other fast food joints are empty. The downsides? Probably the wait honestly. If you're new, everything's made-to-order (whereas other places cook a huge batch and hope enough people order - otherwise, that patty sits...). Plus, they're usually busy so you can expect to wait 5-20min just to order (especially in a long drive-thru) + the additional 7-15min to cook your order, especially if they're backed up. In total, maybe 10-20+min to get your food - but if you have the time, it's absolutely worth it :) Just ask your friends and neighbors if they want anything so you can maximize the return of your wait :) Also yeah, the fries aren't the greatest - it depends on the person at the station but usually "light-well" or "well" is pretty good. Also, their french fries prices are pretty affordable considering how much other places have jacked theirs up. Overall, living near a In-N-Out is such a blessing. Can always count on a quality burger into late night :)

Yelp
We were on our way to pick up family at SFO but they were unfortunately delayed...then not delayed but we ended up dropping by In-N-Out as we needed some dinner. We had hoped to go through the drive through but the line was pretty much as long as it usually is. So we ended up parking and ordering inside. It was raining that day so folks were cleaning up the entrance and cleaning up the tables as usual which is nice. There was no line to order, but a long line to pick up food. If you want to get your food fast, don't order fries. I think we would've gotten our food a bit faster had we not ordered fries. And to be honest the fries were horrible. It was definitely not cooked thoroughly and it was quite floppy. The burger was fine. Normal. It definitely hit the spot. Unfortunately an hour or so later I was so bloated. Not sure if the burger or fries made my stomach just not be happy. Anyways, I do like In-N-Out once in a while. For the price, it's a nice option for burgers, but usually I love fries here but it was really bad this time.

Yelp
I really tried--three times, in fact--to understand the hype around In-N-Out Burger, but unfortunately, I just don't get it. First, the French fries were completely inedible--if I had to compare them to anything, it would be cardboard, both in texture and taste. As for the burgers, with or without cheese, they were disappointingly bland and lacked any real flavor. Sadly, this just isn't for me, and I won't be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
Went at 2pm on a Monday. Drive thru line as long so went inside. No wait at the counter!! Place was filled, all tables were occupied. Got our food in about 20 minutes. The food was delish! Had a double meat no cheese animal style, normal and animal style fries. Each time was made well and service was excellent. We requested extra ketchup and they did not disappoint! We even got a few sticker packs! Hope to back soon for some tasty burgers and fries!

Yelp
In n Out is always a pitstop home after flying into SFO. It's conveniently located a block down 101S off Millbrae Ave. PSA: beware of the red light cameras at the freeway exit! The drive through line may look a mile long but they have the system down and are so efficient here. As with the other locations, there is an employee taking orders on an iPad so you bypass the drive through menu ordering system. By the time you get to the 1st window to pay, your order is ready at the 2nd window. We're usually able to get through the line in 10-15 minutes. The burgers and fries here are so good! You can't beat the price either, $6.05 for a double double, and $4.25 for a cheeseburger. You can taste the fresh ingredients and quality! While I do like an occasional burger from its competitor, In n Out is still my go-to for a quick and delicious burger. Don't forget to ask for special sauce!

Yelp
It's been a long while since I've been to In-N-Out, but every time I'm in the Bay Area, I run to the nearest one. Came in on a Wednesday around 1pm. It was quite crowded, but understandable since it's right by SFO and by Millbrae Station during lunch hour. Ordered 2 double-doubles with fries and animal style, one four by four, and one protein style double-double. Food tasted fresh as I remember and hit the spot. If you're hungry, highly recommend the 4x4 as it's $9.85 and the double-double is $6.05 - more protein for less. The seating area was crowded but clean. Parking is packed, so be careful while parking and getting out. Other than that, highly recommend this In-N-Out as a staple going into and out of SFO!
google avatar

Sergio L.

Yelp
In-N-Out is my ultimate go-to for a quick protein fix after a solid workout or a long day at work. Rain or shine, their burgers are the perfect comfort meal--simple, fresh, and always satisfying. The buzzing ambiance adds to the experience, with the energy of happy customers and the hustle of the team behind the counter. Whether it's the classic Double-Double Protein Style or those perfectly crisp fries, nothing hits the spot quite like In-N-Out. If it's not In-N-Out or a gourmet burger, I'm not interested! Great food, friendly service, and a vibe that never disappoints. Highly recommend every time!
google avatar

Micah M.

Yelp
Burgers are phenomenal. Fries are great. Shakes are good. Service was excellent. There was a wait to get into the parking lot. It is poorly designed. The restaurant is very clean & well lit.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Is this the best In-N-Out experience I've ever had? No. But as a hungry traveler from the Midwest to SFO in the late Sunday hours, I can't tell you how much I appreciated the hot burger, fries, and delicious chocolate shake. Paper straw haters beware. Service was exceptional for 12:30 AM.
google avatar

Sharon D.

Yelp
In n Out is such a cult classic. Being so close to the SFO airport, you can easily make thos a first stop after your flight or last stop before your trip. The parking lot is very crowded, but don't let that deter you from getting your burger, fries and shakes. The staff hustles and gets your food ready very quickly. The dining room is always packed, but it does move and the staff cleans tables constantly. A chaotic, but enjoyable experience.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
We ordered two double-doubles, animal style fries, and a cheeseburger with extra lettuce and tomatoes. I also asked for grilled onions. We ordered with one of the employees taking orders in the drive thru line. The wait wasn't too bad and the food was delicious! Pro tips: I usually enjoy ordering the Neapolitan milkshake and asking for my fries well done. These options aren't listed on the menu but the employees will know what you mean (I've never had a problem ordering these items and highly recommend it)!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Always a good experience at this location! Located right next to the freeway, making it convenient off the 101 and also busy on the weekends. Expect about a 30 minute wait for your food during peak times. Drivethru line goes through the parking lot so it's easy to get stuck.
google avatar

Raina T.

Yelp
Friendly staff, consistently delicious burgers at a decent price. The only downside I would say would be the line organization is not done well at this location. The line blocks off the parking and can even block off the entrance to the plaza. Other than that, definitely recommend animal style cheeseburgers and light well done fries!
google avatar

Kenneth C.

Yelp
In n out, always consistent with their service and meal. This one in particular is always busy and crowded. The restaurant and the bathroom were clean. Getting in and out (pun intended) of the parking lot can be troublesome since the drive through line can create a lot of traffic.
google avatar

Alice N.

Yelp
Fav fast food burger joint: - burgers are consistent which I very much appreciate - my go to order: double single (double patty with one cheese) with raw chopped onions - tip: order unsalted fries (fresh and crispy) - ingredients are always fresh - always crowded due to being close to airport but worth the wait in my opinion whether it's drive through, take out, or dine-in
google avatar

Jeannie P.

Yelp
In and out delivers every time! Although It's always crowd and the lines are long, the food is always so fresh and tasty, the staff are friendly and helpful. I enjoy it every time  :-)

Yelp
Very busy In-N-Out, but delicious food. I should have read my first review, being so close to the airport this In-N-Out is very busy. We even saw a huge bus bringing people here. That means that at 12:30 p.m on a Friday it was packed. We got lucky and got a table, but I had to hover. By the time we left around 1:30 p.m. it wasn't as busy so there were more tables open. Either way, next time I should look for a different In-N-Out. The drive through was even busier. They do seem to be on it though with a guy walking to cars with an iPad taking orders, so don't be too scared by the long line. It did take a while to get our food, but it was so worth it. My kids actually ate a hamburger and fries. I got a cheeseburger protein style and fries animal style, which is incredibly delicious. I don't know how they make their fries, but there's nothing else like it. Their menu is minimal, but what they do, they do well. I will absolutely always come to In-N-Out in SF, but next time look for one a little further away from the airport. They do have outdoor seating as well, but when it's super sunny there is no shade. They really need to make this place bigger, but parking is plentiful so no issues there.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Standard In N Out by the San Francisco airport. The line gets long but they have an employee standing outside to help the line along. Ambiance is your typical In N Out. They had staff taking out trash and keeping things tidy.
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
Got the triple triple and it was quite the mouthful but delicious nonetheless! Loved the fries and the cheesiness mixed with extra lettuce. Great roadtrip stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe 2nd or 3rd time having In-N-Out... I'm not a fan. I don't particularly care for many sauce covered foods. Everyone talks about animal style like its the hottest thing around. I also am not always crazy about burgers either. Guess I'm just used to the big fast food chains. So not having one of these in HI is no biggie to me. We picked up burgers, fries and a shake. Its decent food. Not bad but not great IMO. I need crisp fries and these are more on the soggy side, then you animal style that and even more so... just not my thing. Burgers are basic. Shake is good and you're able to mix flavors. I'd probably compare them to five guys which we do have on the islands so, meh. I will not go out of my way to have some. But if we pass by I'm sure the fam will ask for it because its a rare thing we happen upon. Don't let me steer you away. If its regular burgers and fries you like, then have at it. Supposedly its also all about the sauces, so go get that too lol.
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
Very long wait times during peak hours as it's near the airport, but super delicious and worth the wait in my opinion. Get the animal style fries with chopped chilies!
google avatar

Yelp
Obviously they have a new manager #1 The person in a full up to the neck apron Obviously saw me and didn't like me Therefore took it personal and did everything In their power to make sure they do me wrong Never mind what I already know about the establishment The service sucked big time The burger came out off as well Nobody asked for burnt edges Nor did I ask for the old damn near expired buns I ordered my food... drive thru the fries boat damn near empty Why in hell is this place going down to hell... I mean this must be the worst branch as we speak. Also this must be the one of the worst experiences I had went through. I can guarantee they didn't go by the standards when dealt with me... still less worse than the gas station burger. You know it's bad once you compare it to the gas station food Until next time. Hopefully under new management. And yes remember the meet grade is going down. The lower the meet grade the cheaper it is for the consumer... I guess. But here it's not halal nor kosher anymore. The owner is still beautiful

Yelp
I visited an in and out Burger in Millbrae California at about 12:15 am Thursday morning. I was blown away at the service I received from Tristan and Emiliano... Those two gentlemen have upper management written all over them it's kind of personal what happened to me but the 2 gentleman went above and beyond to answer the call of duty and to make me an extremely happy customer. Yelp
So, so close to SFO, just 1.5 miles away. So upon driving from the rental car lot (slow down and no speeding), put the pedal to the metal and fly down 101 S!! Get off at Millbrae and try not to drive Chicago style by cutting people off. That will not be tolerated up here in the Bay Area. This parking lot is competitive, but not as tough as getting into Stanford (3% admission rate). Oh and the burgers are so good after so many months of being away (sigh of deep lament). I've been having the protein style double double, so that I don't get into any trouble, because my cholesterol score is on the bubble. Nashville and you done skipped Chicagoland?? In N Out what's wrong with you?! Just know that I will be submitting a complaint on your hotline for skipping us - because we deserve In N Out everyday in the midWest. Everyday.....so please make it happen soon, because I'm holding my bated breathe.

Yelp
The late night hunger kicks in after I get off the airplane so I make a stop here to get my usual which is a cheeseburger with grilled onions, fries, and a milkshake. Like all In-N-Out Burger locations, this one is busy and the drive thru line is long! Yes, it's long even at 12 AM. I prefer to walk in, order my food and eat it there while it's hot. The cheeseburger is amazing, the patty is juicy and the sauce kinda oozes out as you bit into it. Every bite is delicious. During my most recent visit, I decided to get my fries well done and that was a game changer because crispy fries are so much better. The chocolate shake is my favorite but sometimes I get the strawberry shake; both are delicious. I don't look at the menu anymore so I don't know if the prices went up but honestly, even if the prices did go up, I'd still eat here because Hawaii doesn't have any In-N-Out locations. There are lots of parking spaces for this location and I feel like it's faster to walk in and order the food instead of waiting in the drive thru line. They have lots of table available inside and some outdoor seating but it gets chilly.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Not much to say about In n Out that hasn't already been said. It's delicious! It's cheap! It's busy! We always aim to come here during non peak times. Either 11am for lunch or 530pm for dinner. The rush isn't too bad. Wait is about 20 minutes or so when you dine in. I'm sure it's the same for every location, but the drive thru line here always wraps around the corner and flows onto the surrounding roads. Patience is definitely needed, but will be rewarded!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
4//2/24 In n out at this location is always packed due to the airport nearby. The bathroom lock needs a bit of fixing. The service is not fast and the employee communication was not good. Today I ordered one simple fry that should have been handed to me right from the start. But I had to keep waiting ask asking for my one order of fry. The employee making the fries blamed it on the cashier saying that the cashier didn't hand him the order. They ended up giving my order of fry to a customer behind me who also ordered a singular fry. The employee who saw the whole thing just laughed. Like dude, it's not funny. This place honestly need better communication. Food is okay.
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
Although peak hours here are kind of brutal, the service here is just so good. Everyone is so sweet and understanding, my family and I have been going here for years. Eating there late at night is the best typa vibe. My Order: Double Double with no tomatoes and grilled onions, and extra toasted buns Crispy fries, the only way I get them

Jeremy S.

Yelp
I was not impressed with the animal style fries. Because not enough cheese, sauce and onion. It was only covering the top and not the middle down towards the bottom needs more sauce, onion and cheese. The cheese needs to be melted more before they put on the sauce and onion.
google avatar

Aya E.

Yelp
Ordered: Double Double Burger (~$6): 2 beef patties, 2 slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions (I got grilled and raw), and In-N-Out spread Animal-style Fries (~$5): crispy French fries loaded with melted cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and the In-N-Out spread Medium Soft Drink (~$2): Diet Coke Aya's take: You don't miss In-N-Out until you move back to the East coast where the closest one to you is still thousands of miles away. On my recent trip to SF, I knew I had to prioritize this. Such a well-made burger and the double patties are a must - one patty is just not enough. I got the chopped chilis this time which really took it to the next level. It added a bit more flavor and some heat to each bite. The Animal-style Fries turns their fries from mediocre to excellent. Hit the spot overall!
google avatar

Keith A.

Yelp
Never gets order wrong , never a different consistency , never disappointed. Long drive through lines are a norm. But the line moves fast, there's just that many costumers. Staple fast food for any Californian. Eat inside , it's clean and good atmosphere. Tourist love to come by as it is very close to the airport . So beware of traffic in the parking lot picking them up and dropping them off
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
The double double combo was perfect as usual. It always is. Sometimes it's a little different depending on which shift is on. In general, however, a little extra cooked here and there isn't anything anyway. The main issue is the parking lot. Traffic through the parking lot is extraordinary, to say the least. Having your car blocked by drive-thru traffic is a normal occurrence. Having a conversation with the other driver and passengers while they're blocking your car is abnormal. I get that I'm old but there's no need to look into your glove compartment.
google avatar

Dana C.

Yelp
Crazy good! I don't go to fast food restaurants but had to try the iconic burger while in San Francisco. Damn that's a good burger! Fresh cut fries were amazing! Lovey to eat them right out the door on the wharf!
google avatar

Cecilia M.

Yelp
A most busy location near the airport. The line at the drive through was long and snaked to the entrance of the plaza. Inside it was not too full. They had a staff member standing outside to help expedite orders. Our late night orders of 2 Animal Style Cheeseburgers for car dining was served in an open box with napkins. The burgers were excellent: hot, lots of toppings and delicious! Perfect fresh off-the-plane meal!
google avatar

Abraham A.

Yelp
I've been to this Millbrae location countless times and quality of the burgers has been consistently good. Service is quick and you can almost always find a seat. Looking forward to many more visits at this wonderful location.
google avatar

Abbie w.

Yelp
Quick, easy, and good! Super expensive if you make it but can be cheap if you're not getting shakes, animal style, etc. We came right from the airport at 11pm and it was busy but the line moved fast. Everyone was incredibly friendly and a nice welcome to the area!
google avatar

Jennie C.

Yelp
I literally got my ticket and there were almost 30 people ahead of me T-T... Did not know it was quite possible to be this busy at a fast food place. All i got was a douhble double !!!! Luckily i didn't have much else to do that day so I just waited. Sooo many people around and moving other people's belongings to get from one place to another, actually quite rude. Many little kids running around on the busy weekend I was there. Very unpleasant. On the contrary, the burger was incredible as expected. next time I'll probably stick to the drive through (even though i don't drive a car) because it'll likely be faster than if you order at the store!~!!!!!!
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
As they say, In-N-Out, that's what a burger's all about! The design and layout of this In-N-Out matches that of what you would typically see at other locations. Double-double with fries came out excellent! Taking off a star because they have the worst vehicle exiting I've ever seen: to get back into the street, you're dumped on Rollings Road, right by the lights of a super busy intersection, Rollings Road and Millbrae Avenue. Add to this the fact that this is right by the freeway and SFO International Airport, has a gas station (car rentals refueling), and is the closest In-N-Out to the airport, you have a recipe for major gridlock. And of course, last time I went here one of the few land is closed off for construction. Even in the best of times, you'll likely be stuck for several light changes until you can get back out into the road. In other words, give yourself extra time--and maybe an extra order of fries--if you're visiting this location.
google avatar

Yelp
Burger smells so good! Tasted awesome Very popular restaurant, staffs work very hard
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
midnight flight getting in, and you're jetlagged. nothing else is open. good thing for you, this in-n-out is the most hyper-functional fast food joint in the world, according to my data. they always get the order right, quick and the food is everything you'd expect. are we holding this spot to a michelin-level critique? no. we are not. it is great at what it does, simply put. thank you, tireless in-n-out employees, for being there for me at the end of my bart ride.
google avatar

Ida S.

Yelp
In-n- out is what California dreams are made of lol: honestly it's such a staple and I don't go often to be honest because of the long lines. I like the concept of the menu being simple. Word on the street there is a secret menu though like the Flying Dutchman burger to as simple as a lettuce wrapped burger. After a hard day of moving I got a late lunch and to my surprise the wait was about less than 10 Minutes from start to finish. The staff was great and efficient and the burger was solid! I did come around 3 pm on a Sunday but I might have missed the rush. It's so close to SFO so the short wait was impressive. I would go back to this location:
google avatar

Yelp
I am a big fan of In-N-Out and this location does not disappoint! As other people have mentioned, this location is particularly busy since it is close to the airport, the freeway, etc. However, the workers are highly efficient and they have ALWAYS been kind and friendly to me. The last time I went I was very exhausted and I think it showed when I placed my order. I had to ask the guy to repeat the questions he was asking me (onion? for here or to go?). He was very nice about it. Despite the location being very busy, I was able to find a table to eat my food. Workers were coming in so often to clean tables, pick up food scraps from the floor, etc. Parking was not a problem. There was a huge line of cars waiting to go through the drive through but parking otherwise was not an issue.
google avatar

Generous Y.

Yelp
My favorite In-N-Out around SF because of the location. Right after a plane trip or right before, In-N-Out hits the spot. Walking distance from the Caltrain and BART as well. Service is always great but location can get sketchy at times. We surprised them with a stop after a wrestling tournament for 50 burgers and lots of fries. They delivered very quickly and without any problems. Thankful for the staff here.
google avatar

Natalie B.

Yelp
In-n-out staff never cease to amaze me, regardless of location. This location specifically was beyond efficient and punctual. Also I appreciated that Telia who was working the window this evening took the time to prep straws for drive through orders, understanding the need for this when traveling. That was awesome. If Im ever flying out of SFO again I will absolutely be back here.
google avatar

Paolo B.

Yelp
After every work event, I always have a craving for either a burger and a burrito, so when I saw there wasn't a line, I took it as a sign as I had to fulfill that craving. My go-to order always starts with a 3x2 in some variation and of course chopped chiles. Animal style with a whole grilled onion or just regular onions is good for me and I'm always ready for a nap afterwards. Typically I always get to-go but recently I've been leaning into eating it there. Mostly solo, it's a bar style seat is typically available and nothing beats a fresh burger and fries with no chance of sogginess. I think even well done fries in a car ride is mid, so eating them there is the best way to go. Also the Chiles that are at the Ketchup station is way spicier than the packaged ones. Be careful though, they be mad juicy. This parking lot still tends to be one of the most poorly designed but if you park closer to the car wash, you'll save yourself the headache.

Yelp
I've easily eaten over 100 burgers from this location, and they almost never disappoint. The taste is consistently delicious, with a fresh patty, tomatoes, and lettuce every time. The quality here has been excellent, and I really hope they keep it up for years to come!

Yelp
I waited for a long time to experience in an out burger and I was really excited to find a spot close to my work. There is a history for In-N-Out Burger, and what their core values are the first impression that I got entering in and out Burger was that, they are super organized. Their staff is extremely active and they all know who is working on what kind of order I feel that this was fascinating to see how efficient they are because this place was jampacked, and the drive-through was completely filled with piles of cars, I cannot imagine How efficiently they could be working because I could see the orders coming out every second let's come back to my order. I ordered double cheeseburger and took all the veggies on the side because I was flying they packed it in a box for me make sure that none of the veggies get soggy, I couldn't wait for a long time before it could get cold. I had it and it was outstanding. The meat had an amazing flavor and it was cooked to perfection. I would definitely dine in an experience the hot burger someday.. this really gives an amazing old-school ambience which makes you think you're probably in 70s or 80s and this burger John definitely takes my heart away. This is an amazing place.
