In-N-Out Expands Burger Dominion to Friars Road | Eater San Diego

"After relocating and reopening its El Cajon location in East County this past June, In-N-Out will be building a brand-new eatery and drive-thru on Friars Road in the Grantville neighborhood as part of the Riverdale Shopping Center; headquartered in Irvine with more than 300 locations across California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Texas, it is replacing the four-decades-old Black Angus Steakhouse and will share the site with a drive-thru Starbucks Coffee. Construction isn’t scheduled to be completed until early 2021, so San Diegans will have to wait a while for more Double-Doubles, which were beloved by the late Anthony Bourdain." - Candice Woo

The Baseline: For a Fast food burger joint it needs to do well with burgers, fries, and drinks. Food: Double-Double Animal style with extra toasted bun and chopped chilis. It is my good to go and standard go to burger. The fries here were crisp and up to In-N-Out standards. Service: Came during a busy time and they were great getting our order out. Once we were done we even had a staff member grab our trash before we were able to throw it away. Atmosphere: Standard In-N-Out layout so it is great. Love In-N-Out.

Nothing but five stars for this place. Like every place. But, there was an issue with my order and I thought I ordered four milk shakes. Apparently I only did three. But my kid would’ve lost his mind if he didn’t get one. Anyway, the woman at the counter was kind enough to give me one despite it being g a Friday night and like an entire high school convention was present. Anyhow….it was a pleasure. Love this place. Every location is the same.

Google
I missed this place! Always a must when on the west coast. We enjoyed a shake, fries, and a protein style double cheese burger!

My recent visit to In-N-Out was absolutely delightful. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted by the spotless ambiance and a warm, welcoming staff. The cleanliness of the place was impressive, setting a perfect stage for a relaxing meal. Speaking of the meal, the food was, as expected, nothing short of delicious - a true testament to In-N-Out’s reputation for quality. We chose to dine in, and the atmosphere was serene and inviting, with just the right amount of quiet to enjoy our meal. Despite its popularity, the restaurant wasn’t overcrowded, which made for a comfortable dining experience. An added convenience was the ample parking available, making access to the restaurant hassle-free. In summary, In-N-Out not only met but exceeded my expectations with its top-notch service, exceptional cleanliness, and delectable food. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for a quality meal in a pleasant setting.

Ordered 5 double doubles with cheese and regular fries. Service was excellent. I walked in to order. No issues. To go box was a bit greasy but asked for a paper place mat to put on the floor of my car. Would have been nice to have a to go bag. Food excellent as usual.

Google
This was our forest trip to In N It and it was a great experience. The workers were friendly and patient as we figured out our our order. The food came out quickly and accurately. Animal fries were excellent and we really enjoyed the burgers (I still personally prefer five guys but this was pretty darn good!) For the next time we go, I would definitely do grilled onions rather than raw but overall delicious!

Google
Had a pretty cool time at In-N-Out. The place was super clean, and everyone there was all smiles and friendly. The food? Yeah, it was good – no surprises there. We hung out inside, and it was chill – not too crowded, just the right amount of quiet. And hey, finding a parking spot was a breeze, which is always a bonus.

Google
Cheap and fresh compared to other fast food burger chains. I got a 4x4 and it was only $10!

Yelp
IN N OUT @ GRANTVILLE There is parking available here, though it can get pretty busy since it's right next to a Starbucks. You'll still be able to find a spot, and there's also a drive-through, but the line there can get really long. I've always enjoyed coming to this In-N-Out Burger because it's only about a six-minute drive from SCSU. The staff here are friendly, and the place itself is spacious with plenty of seating inside and outside. The bathrooms are clean, which is always a plus. I went with a classic one-patty burger with grilled onions for about four dollars, and it was delicious. In-N-Out never disappoints--fast, affordable, and high-quality. The wait time was around 30 minutes since it was pretty busy, but it was quick and easy to grab my order and enjoy.

Yelp
This In-N-Out has a really large lot shared with other businesses but I've never had an issue finding parking. Their drive through is very long and wraps around. Handled much better than Kearny mesa location. Only one person at registers with a long line. Food only took about 15 minutes. Lots of seating inside, mostly 2 seaters. Food: Animal fry - great Double single - save money with less cheese. Tastes great animal style. Protein style - lettuce wrapped, flavor not as good but healthier. Flying Dutchman - get it whole grilled onion wrapped. Awesome flavor, place on French fries.

Yelp
The protein style animal style burger was truly amazing with the added jalapeños on top. The fries were amazing with the sauce and cheese. The cashier was really nice especially on a late night and service was fast. It was pretty clean.

Yelp
Best In-N-Out meal I've had in years. Burger and fries were the perfect temperature. Fries were fresh with just the right amount of crispness and salt. Drive thru line took less than 10min, which never happens.

Yelp
This In-N-Out gets orders right. I no longer ask for pickles in my burger, only on the side because they make everything mushy. But, overall, this newer In-N-Out is easy to get to, to round into the drive and make your order. I wish they would introduce a mayo condiment! A 9/10! Can't go wrong here and I have no complaints

Yelp
Consistently solid good burgers, fries and milkshakes! This location had friendly service, but a bit slow.

Yelp
This location was awesome it had no line and my food was made super fast I got lucky. I went Through drive -thru . Food was amazing like always the best thing about in and out is they are always consistent your always going to get a great experience when you dine here. I want to also say their customer service is phenomenal very rare . Place is always clean which I find amazing with how much traffic they have .

Yelp
This In-n-out location is almost like a hidden gem in San Diego. Not only is it the closest location to where I am but it has the one thing everyone hopes for when going to an In-n-out, little to no lines in the drive thru. For years, I would go to the In-n-out in Mission Valley but always hated it because of the constant long lines, not only in the drive thru but also going inside and it makes sense why. This is why this location is the only one I go to and it differs from the rest, the lines will never get as long as the others. Yes there will be times in the day where they have a rush, which is common in every In-n-out, but the difference is, it never gets as bad. I love how the food quality is also just as great as the same other ones as well and the staff are also great.
google avatar

Cesar G.

Yelp
Super disappointing dinner. The quality of the food seems to have fallen off. Not sure if it's because the owner(s) decided to move their headquarters to Tennessee. Or if the employees don't care to check rhe food they're serving. But man, the meat was flavorless and needed to be doused with spread. The one thing I'm glad I did was make it animal style with chopped chilis so that I would be something better than an unseasoned tire. And don't get me started on the stale twigs they rounded up, threw in a container and labeled "fresh fries". Tasted like they left the fries out for a few hours because someone forgot about it, then someone else saw it, smelled it, said it was "good enough" and threw it in a bag. What a waste of a dinner. THANKS IN-N-OUT. Do better.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Tried the Flying Dutchman with grilled onions and it was well worth the $5.25 price tag. The flavors were satisfying, especially with the added grilled onions. I asked for spread and peppers on the side, which gave the option to customize each bite. The drive-thru line, as expected, was long (about a 20-minute wait from end to order in hand on a Wednesday evening ) Consistent quality and genuinely friendly service make this location a top choice every time I visit.
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
It's in n out burger, what can I say? Always, always great service and the price is more reasonable, these days, than McDonald's (and way, way better quality!). Expect a 45 minute wait, unless you come during off-peak times (before lunch and, maybe, 2-3PM).
google avatar

Kimi D.

Yelp
Been here a few times since it's opened and it's just so convenient. Like other reviews, this location is top notch just because it's not nearly as crowded/ the wait is not as bad as the mission valley location or others! Tip: Dine in is less crowded than drive thru most the time. Food came out probably in like 10 minutes. It was my first time trying the Flying Dutchman wrapped in onion because I saw a TikTok Honestly SOOO GOOOOD. Service was excellent and it's a very clean location.
google avatar

Yelp
I've eaten at plenty of In and Outs over the years and this is one of the best ones. PROs: This is a newer location and the staff is maintaining it very well. "Barbara" was our cashier and she was very polite, courteous, and helpful. All of the facilities are clean and well maintained. The condiment bar is well stocked. The food was fresh and quickly made during our dine in trip. I will be returning to this location. CONs: The carline is long most of the time but that's to be expected at any of these establishments. Parking can also be a little challenging during peak times.

Yelp
I rarely get in-n-out despite living in Cali, but on occasion the stars align and I find myself in the drive-thru, having my order taken by an actual human rather than a machine. I felt pretty bad for the person taking orders, as it was a horrendously hot day. However, he provided the same excellent service in-n out always delivers. I got the animal style fries and a double-double with extra grilled onions. The drive- thru moved a bit slowly, but I could see that they were slammed in the restaurant as well. I got caught in traffic on my way back so I stuck the fries, paper tray and all, in my air fryer and they crisped up beautifully. I burned the top a bit but that is ok, it's just more flavor after all! Nothing beats a burger and animal fries at in n out. The burger was as always, fresh and delicious. The veg is always so crisp and the bread is always fluffy. I love grilled onions and how customizable in-n-out can be. And there's no beating those prices!

Yelp
Ordered 6 puppy patties and I got home and received 6 patties with grilled onions. His has never happened so I don't even know what to say. But needless to say my pups did not eat them. It was a waste
google avatar

Kiki B.

Yelp
Ordered fries and double double. Sooo salty the fries literally can see the crystals and the burger tasted extremely salty like they salted the meat patties Never had this problem before. Why so mean buddy??This was morning way before the rush hour.

Yelp
Let me begin this review by saying that this in all honesty is THE BEST In-N-Out in the San Diego metro as an ex-employee that has worked at over 6 different stores in the area. And if you find your orders at In-N-Out are coming out poorly, read this review for some insight. Lets begin by the fact that the layout is comfortable to work in and it almost seems like the stores helps you work. It incentives productivity and it's just bougee, it has a sliding walk in fridge door just and like all kinds of new nice goodies for the employees. Now lets get to resolving customer issues: Problem 1: Soggy Buns. Customers, have y'all ever considered that after someone makes food and put oh idk, something like spread on it might just get soggy. I know, MINDBLOWING so because it seems like such a problem for you folks, do what I do and order the burger deconstructed so you can assemble your burger yourself at home. Nobody forced you to get in the drive and eat the order all the way back at your house. You can eat in the car, that's kind of the point of the drive through if I'm going to be honest. Solution: But in all actuality, just order your burger with onion of choice BUT without spread, tomatoes, or lettuce and just get that stuff on the side. These are the ingredients you want to make sure have limited contact with the burger and don't get hot over time. That way you can get home and microwave the burger and fries (You have to microwave the food; you made your bed getting burger burger to go, so now lay in it) so they're fresh and hot and THEN you can put the cold condiments. And pls don't be extra for the cooks and ask for pickles on the side , that's the one thing that's actually annoying to have to do for customers. A lot of issues stem from the fact that you guys aren't eating the burger right after it's made. In-N-Out is made to be consumed immediately after producing it but there is always around taking it to go, just be smart and think things carefully. Now for my favorite order: 1 Double Double Animal Style (Animal adds Pickles), with 2x Extra Grilled Onion, Chillies, Ketchup & Mustard instead of Spread, and occasionally I ask for extra toasted bun. 1 Order of Regular Fries (Or 1 Animal Fry w/ xtra Grilled Onions and Chillies) 1 Large Diet Coke or 1 Large Regular Arnold Palmer Changing the fry cooking type is a thing but I don't recommend it. The light fries increase your chances of greasy fries, and the well done fries increase the chance of hard and almost chip like fries so I just always go regular and they almost never disappoint. Y'all need to stop trippin on this joint because every time I come the team does so good and at the end of the day, you guys are the ones ordering the food. As employees we would never skimp out on a customer so if there is a problem, it's usually your fault. Be smarter and you'll get to love In-N-Out for its consistently fire food, ESPECIALLY at this location. Shoutout the the Manager, I forgot your name but he's the big homie and the burger I got with him in charge was FIREEEEE. Overall, DAYGOEATS approved

Yelp
You can never go wrong with In-N-Out. This is the only location I've been to where the drive-thru line moves quickly. This In-N-Out is conveniently located in a plaza that has ample parking, so you can always just walk in.

jack

Yelp
I went here and a bigger young lady was giving me dirty looks while getting my order, which ended up taking a long time to get there somehow after the line went by relatively quickly. Anyways lady comes back says half a$$ apology and gave me the food. Opened it up and see spit dripping down between the cheese and burger. Disgusting. This is why I'm starting to not like going to drive thru's especially anymore.

Yelp
I haven't been to a real SoCal In N Out in years. SoCal is where the real deal In N Outs are! This location seems a little bigger inside than your average store. The menu is the same and my order is the same ... well with one exception. I'm trying to cut the calories a little but I don't wanna give up my fave foods, so instead of my Double Double Animal style with extra grilled onions ... I get a single cheeseburger animal style with extra grilled onions! Saves a little money too. My friend gets the Double Double Animal Style. We sit inside, cause I like to be civilized when enjoying my In N Out rather then worrying about messing up the leather interior. Drop catsup or spill a drink here at a table, no biggie! Our order number is called and I go get the burgers. Hmmm ..... yeah mine looks smaller, but let's see what the taste experience is like? My first bite in ... hmmm, well the flavor is there, that yummy In N Out burger taste, but it's just not there in it's full glory, filling my mouth with it's wonderfulness. I know exactly what a real Double Double tastes like and feels like and well, ... I think I'll go back to the real deal Double Double next time! Screw the diet if I'm at In N Out!

Yelp
NEWEST IN-AND-OUT Of all locations, this be my favorite. Not much to review about, we all been to an In-N-Out Burger so I'm going to keep it as simple as that. With inflation, their prices also increase. Still, quite affordable for what you receive. PROTEIN STYLE + WELL DONE FRIES. Way better to eat inside instead of to-go. Cleaner, faster, and more fries.
google avatar

Chun P.

Yelp
As of this review on Oct 17, 2022... America Inflation: 8.2% United Kingdom: 8.6% Germany: 10.9% Netherlands: 14.5% Turkey: 83% (Sweet Geezus!!!) Despite all this, I'm thankful that the consistently delicious, tasty, juicy, and fresh meaty Double Double burger is still less than $5, or $4.85 to be exact. It seems like a real bargain these days! Thank you!!! Side Note: if you hate $6-7/gallon gas so much...why are so many of you still going through the insanely long drive through line!? Are you that lazy?!
google avatar

Courtney O.

Yelp
I almost don't want to write a review about this location, because I feel like it's semi-untapped. I realize no in-n-out burger is really hidden, but this one is so much less crowded that the one in Mission Valley! I was recently there during peak hours at night and I was still able to get in n out no problem (pun intended hah!) I find that it can be faster to go inside and order and there's good parking in the area to make that happen. The staff was super super friendly and I was able to get my usual favorite- protein style hamburger with grilled onions and animal style fries. Every time I get in-n-out I'm reminded how lucky I am to live in California where I get to indulge in these glorious burgers whenever I want.

Isabella D.

Yelp
I usually get low energy from the employees but Matthew had great customer service and was very polite.

Yelp
This location just popped up here within the last year & it's been the perfect addition to this shopping area. There hasn't been a time I've come where they aren't busy, but just like all In& Out restaurants they're incredibly efficient. Today was the first time I've come across a location that had not one but TWO people tag teaming the dinner line in the drive through. Food is hot & fresh as always. Plenty of sauce to go around. Very fast paced! One of my all time favorite burger joints, they're seriously unmatched.
google avatar

Martika J.

Yelp
My family and I are huge fan of In-N-Out Burger. Any time we're on the West Coast l, it's a must we go at least once. This location, as always, was busy but our order didn't take as long as I thought it would. The customer service was great. No complaints!

Yelp
Sometimes the Burger Gods look down and grace you with a perfect double double. impeccable courtesy and fast service.

Yelp
I am tired of burned hamburger bun edges that you cannot bite into! This happens regularly at this location!!! I've tried asking for no toasted at all but by the time I got my order home the bun had totally sogged out. Epic fail, InnOu!!!

Yelp
The service from Sebastian was great, when you think of customer service from In-N-Out, you think of Sebastian

Yelp
Checked out this new in n out location. At first it was alittle confusing to get to the drive through, just make sure you're not confusing yourself with the Starbucks line. I went on a Saturday night around 1230, there was quite a few cars but from beginning to end, I only waited about 20 minutes which is pretty quick compared to other locations I've been to. Very great customer service and food was spectacular as always lol.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
This a very good In-N-Out Burger. The parking lot in and around the business can get quite cramp given that there's a new drive thru Starbucks right next door. Perhaps that should of been thought out better. I had the "Double Double" which was good, but it could of used a little more lettuce in the burger. There was just one small piece. The double patties were quite tasty and I loved, as usual the grilled onions, but they forgot the fresh onions. It was either just not my day or they are still experiencing opening jitters etc. At any rate, the double double was still very good, even with the misshapes. Service was very friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Katherine W.

Yelp
Fast service, delicious burger every time, and there's plenty or seating inside and outside. It's what you expect at an in n out but not as busy. Ambiance is standard compared to other locations.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
Cold and soggy bottom bun. I used the drive thru and only live 2 minutes away, so it was definitely on their end. Literally could not eat it. I come to this in n out frequently and it did not live up to the standard I expect from them.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Sebastian = goat. Love in n out so much and will always be coming here. Customer service was so nice.

Yelp
this food is SO DAMN GOOD. i would come here everyday if i could. my mouth waters so bad. the service is always so fast and my food be hitting.

Yelp
Your typical cookie cutter In-N-Out, now in Grantville! You get here what you can expect at any other location: nice workers, made to order food and decent prices. The parking lot is big since it's in a plaza with other businesses. The dining room is also pretty big, so it's a good place to go in a group. My order was correct and the food tasted great. The dining room was clean and I was there for only about 10 minutes before getting what I ordered. Seems like a nicer location than the one in Mission Valley

Food Fan B.

Yelp
First, let me say I'm a HUGE fan of In-N-Out Burger, but this is by far my favorite location because it's new, very close to my home, and always very, very clean. My problem in the past 2 months is that the food consistency and quality is all over the place - from fabulous to awful. I do think they need to change the oil in the deep friers more often, and the manager needs to do a better job making sure the orders are up to par. Also, why do they have to yell out your order # when they have a great PA system. This seems counter productive, especially for someone like me who is hearing impaired. I'm giving 2 stars in hopes that management will address the food quality issues soon before more and more customers get turned off. I've eaten there weekly for months and too often have to return something to the counter because it's not prepared correctly or not fresh and tasty.

Darlene L.

Yelp
I used to like this place. It was not very crowded and the staff was always really nice. However, now it's extremely noisy, and crowded, and the staff is rude. Not to mention some creepy customers. I am never going back.
google avatar

Cassandra S.

Yelp
What can I say? I wish there was an In-N-Out Burger in the Midwest. Sadly there is not. I always make an appoint a stop in and get the protein burger, which is basically lettuce wrapped burger. I love their sauce that they put on their burgers and everything is going to order. I brought my kids here for the first time and they absolutely loved everything about the place. The staff really went above and beyond for my kids, giving them in and out burger, hats and stickers as well as checking on them and making sure they were enjoying their meal. I would definitely say is a relaxed, casual diner, feel inside and very family oriented!

Jordan P.

Yelp
Dude honestly you stressed my friend out today. He thought you guys forgot a burger but in reality he just didn't see it in the box. You guys r so awesome, keep doing your thing. Have a good day

Yelp
This has become the closest in and out near our home and thus I'm happy with having it as an option when I'm craving a semi-late night snack. Great prices for burgers and fries in this day and age

The Frugal Mama A.

Yelp
This was my FIRST time and probably the worst experience ever. It started with Valentina messing up my order while at drive through, I asked for "3 by meat" and said I want 2 burgers, Idk how she translated that to 2 cheeseburgers, when I got to the window, I was greeted by another employee by the name "BRECKAN KR", as he was confirming my order i re-verified,it turned out completely wrong, everything was wrong and now he had to place a brand new order, more wait time, as it was done the wrong way.......he quickly apologizes and "fixes" it, he struggles a lot on his computer to add the "3 meat burger", he keeps on talking to someone on his head set, as he cant find the right code, he keeps stating" am i kidding, this is a legitimate order, why cant I find it?" Then charges me $17 some change and asks me to proceed to next window, mind you because the order went wrong with Valentina, i made sure to ask my questions, he kept saying "Right on Right on, as if he got it" now as i am reading the itemized bill i move over to second window to collect food, after checking i realized that i am billed completely differently, I am now charged for cheese, when I asked Brecknan is cheese part of the 3 meat burger (which i clearly did at the window, to which he says yes, i asked pack that separate). At this point- 40 minutes have passed, from initial order with Valentina, to Breckan's corrected order with extra charge on cheese, now comes window number 3, here comes manager ADRI( She was LOUD/ Not polite/CONDESCENDING young lady) She yells out the window to confirm what I asked, at this point I am super flustered I explain this started with the initial person, She was like "Pull over flash your hazards Ill refund you the $3 for cheese, what card did you use, can i get your credit card" No empathy/No Kindness/Just plain high pitched talk, I pull over in the parking lot, at this point it is almost 6 pm (1 hour has passed with all this confusion). Brecknan brings order to car, I asked for the sauce, no sauce was provided, IN my order i also ordered a no salt pup patty, No patty, but definitely charged! I am beyond frustrated at this point, I walk in i ask for ADRI , She continues to ignore,She is packing up other orders for other customer, asked for her 2 times, She then finally comes and states "Oh i handed you the pup patty at the window!!!" OK! at this point, after all this nonsense, I am livid after she lies, She lied!! I had to give her the benefit of doubt, thinking maybe I am not remembering I go back to my car and ask her to come with me to my vehicle to check, She never handed me ANY PUP PATTY, Ever! Then she states, ill get you one, at this Breckan yells and tells her i got one ready already, I ask her to check her cameras, All of this was the worst customer service ever. ADRI supposedly the manager, not once offered a substitute, or a coupon, or anything, They messed up orders right from the start, I went through 3 people in total- please see attached receipts. THIS Place needs better people!! Good luck ordering through the 3 who were involved today, please send your employees to receive some STAR training, especially that manager!

Yelp
Con- They're not in every state Pro- They're not in every state, but they're here! It's California! If you live, visit, or just passing through it. You need to stop and try the best fast food chain in Cali.! So when meat eater and wanted a burger? Nothing hit the spot like a double double animal style(grilled onions and In&out sauce) or on the fries(it gets cheese too with animal style)! Even now as a vegetarian(lacto-ovo) you can still get food here(grilled cheese(take off the tomato as it makes it soggy))! The secret menu is not realy a secret. There are literally websites that will list out what it all means. Animal Style- grilled onions, cheese, in&out sauce. Protein Style- no bun but wrapped in lettuce. Mustard Grilled - Patties are grilled with mustard. Etc.... I wholeheartedly recommend In & Out to anyone! Be warned about the lines either at lunch, late at night, or pretty much anytime because it's that good! Bon appetito!

Yelp
This place is super solid very efficient extremely clean and very friendly staff. The order is always on point they never mess up and the quality of food is the best. It's located within two minutes from my house is extremely dangerous and they are open when they say they are and they closed when they're not unlike other. I will not be coming for a while because I'll be on a diet I will miss you in and out and love you but I'll be back in about three months. In and out it's not me it's you or it's not you it's me sorry but not sorry but I am sorry but I'll see you soon it's me not you.

Yelp
I love this new location! Very clean inside, great service and pretty fast and efficient drive through line. The food is the typical delicious burgers and fries we all love. Gotta love that consistency!

Yelp
Went around 10:30 PM and it was not busy at all. They took my order right away and it was out in about 10 minutes. I got a 4x4, animal style fries, and a Neapolitan milkshake. The burger was good and fresh. The milkshake was also good, thick as an in n out milkshake is expected to be. My animal style fries tasted a bit off though. The onions did not seem grilled enough and the cheese was not very melted.

Yelp
What can you say? Best burger chain for modern fast food burgers and fries. Service is what this place is all about. Have it your way, for sure.

Yelp
Slowest service I've ever seen at a in n out. They had one order taker at the counter with a line that stretched way past the entrance doors. Don't think I saw a single friendly smile the entire time I was there either. Not a very normal in n out experience. Don't think I'll return to this one again. P.S. they were out of lemonade, how?
