While I don't think In-N-Out is the end-all be-all of fast-casual burger spots, I like to stop into one whenever I'm in the Western US since there are none on the East coast. My brother was with me for this trip, and since he had never had InO before it all but confirmed that we would go here. We were in Hillcrest and finished exploring, and since this was the closest one we headed over.
In my experience, InO is super popular, so it can be hot mess waiting in line at the drive-thru, looking for a spot, placing an order, and finding a seat - really anything. We got lucky though, as soon as we pulled into the parking lot I found a spot, and I was happy to find that it wasn't crowded inside - I didn't have to wait for a table nor in line to order; it was a total win. The interior looks like any typical InO.
We went simple and ordered cheeseburgers with a side of fries; we got them Animal Style which is their (barely) secret menu item. Basically, if you order something Animal Style they will put extra toppings and flavors on the food. I think Animal Style is worth it, but if you're not into cheese or cooked onions or their spread I can see why you would opt out.
The food was good - I think InO delivers solid fare but I personally prefer Sh*ke Sh*ck burgers; their fries, however, are really good. Service was excellent - they have a well-run operation; everyone was friendly and our food was ready in a relatively short amount of time. Overall, I had a great experience at this InO - definitely keeping it on my radar to try again the next time I'm in SD.
