In-N-Out Expands East, Will Open in Tennessee in 2026 | Eater

"A California-born burger chain founded in 1948 that has become a West Coast icon, operating nearly 400 restaurants across California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Texas, and Oregon and expanding into Idaho. It prides itself on maintaining consistent quality for its burgers and fries — including signature items like the double-double and animal-style fries — by building its own distribution and production capabilities before entering new markets. Leadership long resisted eastward expansion to preserve its uniqueness, but the company has grown steadily over the past decade (including openings during the pandemic) and is now preparing to move into the eastern U.S., a shift that may affect its cultural cachet among West Coast fans." - Amy McCarthy

Google
Our first time at this restaurant since we’re from a different state and the staff was so helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this location! The food was so good!

Google
Best burger I’ve had- super fresh plus their price is right. We enjoyed our “lite” pink lemonades as well. Please bring this chain into Chicago!!

They close very late. Even when I came after 10 pm, it was still packed and really lively. I ordered a huge plate for just 16 $ – super affordable and absolutely delicious

Google
This is an excellent place that always maintains impeccable service and delicious freshness. Just be aware that it gets very crowded during peak hours. But it's worth every single second of the wait.

Sandra O.

Google
Went there around 5 pm on a Sunday and it was packed with people, the line for the cars was even worse, took a while to find a place to sit inside, but the hamburgers were pretty good as always, try the chocolate milkshake 👍🏻

Aya S

Google
I went there around 8 p.m., and I was surprised to see a long drive-thru line and a crowded inside! But the burger I had for the first time in a while was delicious.

Google
First time eating at in and out , staff friendly fast service very organized it was like a military operation every one had a job perfected it well and fast with precision, teamwork 👍 food was real not fake like others they put out 28 orders not including the drive thru in just 6 mins wow !

This In-N-Out Burger store is conveniently located right off the I-8 freeway and near Mission Valley Mall, making it a popular spot for a quick bite, especially after other restaurants have closed. Its late-night hours make it ideal for a post-shopping or post-movie meal. The drive-thru tends to get packed around 5 pm, so I chose to dine in to avoid the wait. The restaurant has classic In-N-Out decor, featuring white bricks and colorful paintings of the iconic store with palm trees, creating a fun and nostalgic feel. The staff are incredibly busy but still maintain a friendly attitude toward customers, which adds to the experience. The food is high-quality, with burgers and fries that offer plenty of customization options. I particularly enjoy the double-single, and their "lite" lemonade is a refreshing low-calorie option with natural sweetness. There’s also an outdoor dining area with umbrellas, perfect for enjoying the scenic surroundings. You can even spot the beautiful church on the nearby hillside from here. Combined with the view of the bustling highways, it creates a surprisingly charming backdrop for a classic burger experience.

Yelp
I came in today to In-N-Out to have one of their amazing burgers like always, they never disappoint. Super consistent, fresh, and still affordable which is rare these days. What really caught my attention though was that they're matching donations three times this month to help homelessness. To be honest, I never really write reviews based on promotions or to support something, but this one stood out. In-N-Out has always been about quality and doing good, and this just proves it even more. From here on out, I'm donating my change every time I visit, maybe even a little extra, because I know they'll stand by their word. It's really admirable to see a company that gives back like that and still keeps their prices fair and their food top-notch. This location was clean, staff was friendly, and service was quick. If you stop by, I recommend donating a little, even just your spare change:) it all adds up and can help someone who's struggling. My go-to order is the protein style burger with extra onions, grilled peppers, chilies, and extra pickles, plus fries of course. I usually eat here once a week, and it's always amazing. In-N-Out really deserves credit for being consistent, caring, and just overall one of the best spots out there. # bestburger #in-N-Out @In-N-Out

Yelp
Early dinner in San Diego, California... Before the Padres' baseball game, my cousins wanted to eat something... We had a short discussion and decided on In-N-Out Burger. This is a well-known fast food chain with a small menu, fresh ingredients, and friendly employees! The nearest In-N-Out happened to be a drive-through. The line of cars was long. I thought that this might make us late for the game, but a couple of staff were outside, taking orders on tablets! That's efficient! We got our order in no time! I enjoyed my Hamburger with grilled chopped onions and grilled whole onions! My extra crispy French Fries stayed crunchy for a long time! Yum! I sure needed my Coca-Cola... it was part of the #3 Combo... my new favorite for $8.40, plus tax! We really appreciated the bonus stickers!!! Thank you!!! By the way... we made it as scheduled to the Padres' game! Yippee!

Yelp
This location is pretty consistent with what you'd expect from In-N-Out -- fresh food, friendly staff, and that signature smell of grilled onions that hits you soon as you pull into the parking lot. The line is generally long (both inside and outside), but it moves faster than you'd expect. The employees here are usually efficient, even when the place is packed. My order is usually spot-on. Everything comes out hot and fresh. The parking lot can be chaotic, especially during lunch and dinner rush, but that's with any of their locations. Overall, a reliable spot when you're craving that classic fix.

Yelp
I requested fries well done and they fries tasted slightly burnt. Beyond well done that Post Malone would say congratulations instead. Wouldn't be surprised if the accidentally added salt and refried it to get rid of it. Employees look like they hate their job with their reaction/impatience when customers don't sprint to obtain their order. Wasn't greeted when I walked up to the register. It's as if management doesn't care about teaching the employees some human decency. Oh, and they forgot the grilled onions to my animal burger. So there's that too.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
This is one of the easiest in-n-outs to navigate in and out of. The line snakes into the street and there is no confusion or cross traffic as in some locations. Workers are always great at getting my complicated orders, and quality is always excellent. I have eaten in-n-out since I was a wee lad and will be continuing to eat in-n-out until my last breath. If we do move out of California, this will be the thing I miss most, by far. Favorite order off diet: Double double, animal style, no lettuce, extra tomato, add whole grilled onion and raw onion, chopped chilies, large chocolate strawberry shake. Favorite order on diet: 4x2, protein style, extra lettuce & tomato, add grilled onion, pickles, and chopped chilies, no shake : (

Yelp
Very tasty burgers compared to others. Very natural. I always try to stop by and get some

Yelp
While I don't think In-N-Out is the end-all be-all of fast-casual burger spots, I like to stop into one whenever I'm in the Western US since there are none on the East coast. My brother was with me for this trip, and since he had never had InO before it all but confirmed that we would go here. We were in Hillcrest and finished exploring, and since this was the closest one we headed over. In my experience, InO is super popular, so it can be hot mess waiting in line at the drive-thru, looking for a spot, placing an order, and finding a seat - really anything. We got lucky though, as soon as we pulled into the parking lot I found a spot, and I was happy to find that it wasn't crowded inside - I didn't have to wait for a table nor in line to order; it was a total win. The interior looks like any typical InO. We went simple and ordered cheeseburgers with a side of fries; we got them Animal Style which is their (barely) secret menu item. Basically, if you order something Animal Style they will put extra toppings and flavors on the food. I think Animal Style is worth it, but if you're not into cheese or cooked onions or their spread I can see why you would opt out. The food was good - I think InO delivers solid fare but I personally prefer Sh*ke Sh*ck burgers; their fries, however, are really good. Service was excellent - they have a well-run operation; everyone was friendly and our food was ready in a relatively short amount of time. Overall, I had a great experience at this InO - definitely keeping it on my radar to try again the next time I'm in SD.

Yelp
Still the bomb dot com if you ask me! Seriously! Dined in today and it was the first time doing so at this location. It is still sooo nice in there! Yes they are all the same interior but this is still sooo nice clean! Workers are always so kind. I have no complaints. Food is fresh and tasty. It always hits! The menu is simple and to the point. I order a somewhat complicated item tho with my secret menu palette. Ever since I got pregnant I can only get a double double now with both grilled and raw onions! With a mustard patty! Recently I like them tomato wrapped! So juicy but messy! I love inn n out so much! And cheaper and healthy than any other fast food chain!

Yelp
We had a quick bite after a long day out. In and Out burgers always hit the spot. Yummy all the way. Friendliest service but unfortunately they have to clean while you're eating.

Yelp
I'm naming this Double Double Animal Style -- Naomi-Naomi Campbell- Campbell because LOOK AT HOW PRETTY IT IS! It's like camera ready perfection! And it tasted even better! Always great service.

Yelp
A solid In-N-Out location! Very popular location since it's located close to multiple freeways etc. The staff is always friendly and they work hard to crank out food, but be prepared for a bit of a wait, especially in the drive-thru. The wait is worth it though for good quality food and customer service.
google avatar

Cristina B.

Yelp
Love In-N-Out and this specific location. The drive-thru staff are always amazing no matter who takes my order, the prices are decent, and the quality of the food is delicious. There can definitely be a wait, especially in the drive-thru, but I feel that those who know about In-N-Out already expect it. If that's not your thing, I suggest parking and ordering inside!
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
Discovered this "secret menu" item from Tik Tok, Flying Dutchman with whole grilled onions on top! So good! It's so simply yet taste so fresh and yummy ! Service was superb as always. The drive thru wraps around but don't be discouraged it goes by fast. Staff was friendly as always they repeat the order 3 times so there is no room for error and the store was nice and clean. One team is inside sweeping and stocking up on condiments and cleaning the tables

Yelp
The food and service at this In-N-Out are outstanding, but the drive-thru layout is by far the worst part of the experience. The way the line backs up into the street just doesn't make sense, and it feels like it would work so much better if switched with The Broken Yolk across the corner, where there's a large, mostly empty parking lot that would easily handle the overflow. It took us about 40 minutes just to get through the drive-thru, but once we placed our order, everything went perfectly. The girl taking our order was incredibly attentive--she took the time to accommodate our allergies, made a note for the kitchen to keep the items separate, and even ensured they placed them in a closed box with a lid. That kind of care really stood out. When we finally got home, the food was still piping hot and, as always, delicious. Classic In-N-Out quality, with next-level customer service. If they could just figure out the drive-thru situation, this location would be unbeatable.

Yelp
OMG! Carmel mountain Poway CA , my 4 yo boy was carrying a tray of fries. yes he dropped the whole thing on accident, the manager immediately brought new fries and told him accidents happen- it ok . these people are living the Bible verses written on their package, look under the cup and fry bag. Thank you for showing care and Christian values ‼ Chaplain Timothy

Yelp
This in In n Out is elite. It's always cleaner and more well kept than other ones. I feel like In-N-Out lines can take forever, but this one is always fairly quick regardless of the time. It does get very busy (especially in the drive through), but the workers are efficient and very, very kind. The food never fails. I got a protein style 3 x 3 and well done fries. Tell me that doesn't look so good.... (it was)

Gener G.

Yelp
We love this brand. The food is great and there is a refreshing wholesomeness displayed by their employees. We have issue only with this location. This review is based on our last two trips through the drive-through. On the previous trip we didn't get our order of well done fries. When I went inside to get it, they did not make it a priority to get make right on our order. Instead I had to wait 20 minutes. What's worse is after the 20 minutes elapsed, I had to remind them I was still waiting. It was only after the reminder when my fries came up. Today, we ordered the following: Order 1: Double double protein style-animal, fries, strawberry shake Order 2: 3x3 mustard fried, extra lettuce fresh onions, extra pickles, fries well done, Diet Coke. What they got wrong: Order 1: Fresh onion instead of grilled Order 2: 2x2 instead of 3x3 Regular fry instead of mustard fry No lettuce instead of extra lettuce No onions instead of fresh onion In-N-Out is king of the secret menus. This location must own up to this moniker. Additionally, to all drive-through businesses; the drive-thru is about convenience! With that said, customers should not have to worry about whether the order is correct, especially if it's on the receipt! Thanks for listening!

Momo Z.

Yelp
They close very late. Even when I came after 10 pm, it was still packed and really lively. I ordered a huge plate for just 16 $ - super affordable and absolutely delicious
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
There's a reason why In-N-Out is so popular, I can get a big meal made with actual fresh ingredients for about $15-20 and that is rare nowadays. My go to is a double double with grilled onions protein style, and cheese fries. No spread (sorry!) Shoutout to literally every one who works here. They're always killing it!

ZK W.

Yelp
Over the years, I have ate at every In N Out location in San Diego county. I order my double cheeseburgers well done and they are the BEST fast food burgers, by far. I still take away one star. Why? Because their fries ALWAYS suck! I can never eat more than a third without throwing away the rest. -mp-525180-rf Fries are stale and cold. Only Mickey-Dee has the best fries in fast food.
google avatar

Ginger P.

Yelp
I heart In-N-Out. For the price and quality, it can't be beat. It's probably my favorite fast food franchise period. The service is always nice, my order is accurate 97% of the time, and food comes out quickly for how busy they are. It's also way cheaper than the cost of McDonald's these days. I can always count on In-N-Out if I want a whole lot of food for not much money. The Ingredients are fresh so it's a wholesome burger. The menu items are also so customizable and it doesn't cost extra to add on most ingredients. My go-to order is a hamburger with double meat, grilled and raw onions, no tomato, add chopped chilis. Delicious! Disclaimer: I do not like their fries, but if you are going to get them, they're better well-done or light well. Seating may be a bit difficult to find during peak hours. They do a good job at keeping the interior clean. Thank you In-N-Out for your service lol.
google avatar

Sofia N.

Yelp
This in-n-out always hits! Although the line looks long it always goes pretty fast. They have never messed up my order and the workers are super nice. Parking lot isnt great but if you park a bit further in a different lot and walk over theres always plenty of parking.
google avatar

Roman P.

Yelp
I come to this location often. The service here is always great and quick even if the line is long. The staff is always friendly and the food is always made good and fresh.
google avatar

Jaymie B.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite in n out in town but we keep having trouble here recently. Tonight it took almost 40 minutes to get our food after ordering inside (it wasn't as busy as it's been when we've been there in the past either), but many people who ordered after us had gotten their food already, we noticed. At about 30 minutes we inquired about the order, they said it was the animal fries they were waiting on, which were totally cold and the cheese was hardened when I got them. The food seemed like it been sitting in the back for awhile in bags and they kept missing it. They seemed impatient when we asked about our food it was a rather unpleasant experience for in n out
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Food is good as always, but the whole setup is a mess. Parking is a nightmare - the drive-thru line blocks all the spots, so if you want to park, you have to wait in the same line. And if you somehow manage to park, good luck getting out because the line is packed tight. Sure, you can park near other restaurants, but that's not really fair. On top of that, I waited 40 minutes for my order! Between parking and waiting, I wasted so much time when I just wanted a quick bite. Totally ruined my day. Wouldn't recommend this location if you're looking for something fast and easy.
google avatar

Trisha A.

Yelp
It's worth the wait every time! I came on a Saturday at around 1 pm and it was my first meal of the day. My go to order is a #3 - hamburger protein style with no spread on it, fries, and a Diet Coke. Life hack: ask for no spread on the burger so it doesn't become soggy, then ask for the spread on the side when you pick up the order. The interior is decently clean. There's always a worker or two trying to maintain the seating area, wiping down tables, refilling the napkins and chili station, etc. There are a lot of tables outside too. The downside of this location is that it gets super busy both inside and at the drive through. People start saving tables when they don't even have their food yet. I waited about 45 minutes for my order, but like I said it was worth the wait! They're making everything fresh to order, so I can't blame them.
google avatar

Hannah N.

Yelp
Well don't let this drive thru line fool you, it looks like and it is but it does move pretty fast, or at least faster than I would expect it to. I have been craving in n out a lot lately so when I do I will get myself in the car and go and enjoy it because why not! My go to order lately has been a flying dutchman with grilled onion. Just the normal grilled onion not the crazy whole grilled onion wrap thing that everyone has been raving over. And since I don't get a bun I tell myself that I deserve to have an animal fry and maybe even a shake if I am really treating myself. ALWAYS ask for extra packets of spread because who doesn't love too add some on top of everything! See you again soon INO!
google avatar

Jeremy E.

Yelp
Straight off the plane from Chicago and head to In N Out. If you know, you know. Couple tips for out of towners - DO NOT DO THE DRIVE THRU. Park and eat inside. So much faster AND you are doing yourself a huge diservice if you are needing your fries immediately. Besides that, the burger was perfect, the staff was super friendly as it always is. The place is always well lit and super clean.
google avatar

Jeff P.

Yelp
My wife and I had just flown into San Diego for a 2 week vacation. After picking up our rental car, we set out to find FOOD - something the airlines used to provide its customers. Now you have to pay the first class premium for the privilege of eating on a nearly 6 hour flight. But I digress, my apologies, foodies! The first place we saw that grabbed our interest was In-N-Out Burger. It had been many years since we visited California but we remembered In-N-Out Burger as a fun, fast food joint with good service and mouth watering flavors. We were NOT disappointed !!
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
A must meal when in San Diego, or anywhere in CA! Fast, clean, delicious! Hits the spot every time! Double Double with fries and soda. So Good!

Towady C.

Yelp
My friends and I love coming to this location. Customer service is really good here. I always ask for animal style fries and animal style cheeseburgers. Food comes out pretty fast even though it's super busy at this location. Front counter isn't stingy at all. Anytime we ask for anything they are willing to give me extra spread or whatever I need. I love how easy it is to grab what I need at the chilies and ketchup station. Drinks are ready available to grab and go. Love the food and atmosphere.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I was in town visiting my daughter that had just arrived back from deployment with the navy. Being from Orlando where we don't have these on every corner it was a must stop while in Cali. The double d for the win & oh my it was awesome. We actually stopped here 4 times over the 10 day period while in town. So dang good
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
I think this is one of the busiest in-n-out locations I've been to in San Diego. The line is usually out into the street but they get through it fairly fast for how long it gets. it always taste great and I think I've only had one wrong order in the many years I've come here. If you can eat inside the service is a little bit faster, but still a bit of a wait. We came here on a Friday night after a baseball game before they closed. The staff are very kind, even though we ended up staying a little bit past closing, which when we realized we immediately left to try and get people to leave with us so they could close. I love this location because it's convenient to go to after the mall. Just wish it wasn't always so busy.

Yelp
In our recent travels we ate at a California staple In-N-Out Burger. It was clean, Sara was our order taker and she and the rest of the counter staff were magnificent. The menu was short and sweet; hamburger, cheese burger, double cheeseburger and fries (the fries only came in one size). The drink menu was large than the food menu. The burgers were good size and seasoned my only complaint was the bun crumpled and the fries were a thin. Other than that we enjoyed our visit. I give this restaurant 4 1/2 stars. If you make out to California it's worth stopping in. Ciao Ciao for now.

gary g.

Yelp
Problem still exists if not worse. Dr Pepper continues to taste like water and gets dumped out at the base of the fountain machine. And it's not just one single location. Maybe this is what happens when you expand too fast. Quality suffers at your current restaurants. This is a shame because everything else is good.

Jared L.

Yelp
Food was good but my order was messed up for two of the items I ordered. The line was super long when I came, but it's In n Out so it always is. Even though there was a long line it moved really fast all things considering and they still had great service. When I called about the incorrect items, they offered me a better way to order it and gave me something to make it up to me. I will most definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Dilara C.

Yelp
When you travel all the way from Ohio and can't wait to share the In n Out experience with your kids, it's a magical thing. BUT. The fries were awful. Just plain cardboard, hardly warm -- dare I say cold -- and it really killed the vibe. Our burgers were good (great IMO) but my son stated that he would take a Dave's Classic over an In n Out Burger 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. All in all, service was magnificent, the burgers were good. The fries were so awful I had to remove *at least* one star.
google avatar

Rannie S.

Yelp
I remembered why I never liked the French fries. So bland! I should have added to cheese or something. Burger was okay. I remember it being so much better but maybe my expectations were too high. I'll come back again to give it another try. Service was good. Ambiance was crowded.
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
Food: standard & solid in n out double double. always tastes good. can't complain about that one. Service: very friendly and helpful. I had used confusing wording at first on accident to order, but the worker clarified my order and got me what i wanted. Ambiance: standard in n out. tables could use more frequent cleaning. bathroom was fine. 3/5. good job.

Yelp
First time trying this chain - we were visiting the area and had to get a fix. This was in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday and the place was packed inside and out with the drive thru. We ate inside and luckily didn't have to wait too long for a table. Tried a couple of their cheeseburgers and double cheeseburgers + animal fries. Burgers were amazing, the sauce, the toppings, the size of the patties and everything in them was just perfect to my liking. Food tastes fresh and fries were equally appealing. The onions and sauce on the fries make all the difference. Honestly so sad we don't have this chain back home or anywhere near the east coast for me at this point, I will miss it.
google avatar

Rami H.

Yelp
In-N-Burger is the best fast food chain in all of America in my opinion. Every branch I go to I notice that they are clean, fast, organized, and treat customers respectfully. Food tastes really good specially the animal style burger and fries. Prices are very reasonable. I wish they open more stores.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
First of all I never thought I would have a bad time at my favorite restaurant. I ordered a bunch of thing with a large group but a double double animal style with chilis and well done fries are in question. I have had one million animal style burgers. Just was not animal style no problem usually, but this time the young girl behind the counter was insisting that it was and belittled me in front of several other customers. Sucked for me so I walked away threw my burger away and watched my family eat. There are way to many of these in the area if these are the people they have working for them at this place I'm going to go elsewhere or just get chick fil a
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
One of the better In-N-Outs. Inside dining area and restrooms were clean. Service was fast and friendly with a smile. The burgers and fries were fresh and full of flavor at a great price!
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
Way better location than another San Diego in-n-out I have tried! Bigger and more modern. Clean and quick despite the long line! They got our order right and everyone enjoyed! I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Lexy E.

Yelp
In n out is always a must when my mom from the east coast comes to town! I don't eat meat so I got the grilled cheese with grilled onions and that was super good! I didn't miss the meat. We also got animal style fries. My mom got her burger animal style and she loved it. It is too bad that the fries are so mid. But overall still good burgers.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
It's rare for me to rate a burger joint five-star (I think!). But it had been around 8-10 years since I've eaten at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant. Yes, the usual lines were long in the drive thru at the MIssion Valley stop. They always are! But I ate in today - just wanted to feel the experience once again, especially after I saw the prices on the menu board! Most everyone knows that In-N-Out is one of the best values for burgers in San Diego. It was great to be reeducated on that! And just about everyone knows that they have an "invisible menu." To get extra bling on your burgers or fries, you have to call out the "animal" and you'll get some good extras on both burgers and fries. So today was simple - and I'll keep this review simple. First, the service was awesome - the store employees were highly courteous even amidst the rush. The burger, fries, and shake were all prepped very well and I was happy with all of it. I could take a star off for how loud it was at this burger outlet, but I felt so good about everything, that I believe it gets the high five anyway! It was pretty full inside and it really didn't slow down much during my visit. But, I was kind of in my own world anyway - my focus was fixed on my meal! It was a good day! I'll be visiting In-N-Out more in the future! Recommend: HIGH

Yelp
If you know, you know. I'm only posting this review to update menu prices as of June 2024 after the fast food wage hike. Still worth it!

Yelp
Moved to SD from South Korea. In N Out still tastes the same and great. Double Double 5/5 Animal Fries 4.5/5 (Cheese always condenses too fast) Chocolate Shake 3.5/5 (Too thick) Service was good and fast. Being away from the US for 4 years, inflation really hit where a Double Double combo is almost $10.
