Three Portland Chefs Will Buy Farm Produce and Give it to Laid Off Restaurant Workers | Eater Portland

"Started by chef KBar of the pop-up Hummus Hang, Olivia Starkie of the Last Supper pop-up, and Josephine LaCosta of the independent catering company Elbow’s Catering, I found that this program purchases food directly from farms and provides it to unemployed restaurant workers. They are trying to raise $10,000 via GoFundMe to buy produce and other products from local farms and deliver them to around 60 people each month; applications will prioritize individuals who lost work due to COVID-19 (including those laid off or who lost work due to sickness) and the team is investigating ways to reach undocumented workers. Applications were planned to go live toward the end of April, and then twice a month In The Weeds will select 30 individuals to receive groceries; the team will deliver farm products including produce, eggs, and beans, using only one or two delivery drivers to limit contacts. They hope to start deliveries mid-to-late May, expect to operate with the three founders handling operations, and say the initial $10,000 goal will finance the operation through the summer and into early fall." - Alex Frane

What a wonderful find! This unassuming, small place looked cozy and inviting from the get-go and I'm so glad we checked it out. Restaurant and ... floral shop? Sounded intriguing and it was. Somehow this concept works amazingly. The atmosphere is beautiful but baby, the FOOD. Small but amazing menu that's carefully curated to hit all palates. Service was a tiny bit slow but we did not have a reservation and others did so no ding for that, but a small ding since we ordered bread service and it never came (we were not charged so it's all good). The chicken picatta was some of the best I've had in my life. Presentation was beautiful. The back bar area looks cozy and inviting and we will definitely be back. I can't believe I've lived in this part of town for 5 years and never been to this place but I will be back - soon!

I hate writing reviews like that but I have to. I was super excited to try this local restaurant and support local business. I came here with my husband for a dinner. I chose chicken picatta and he chose poke bowl. Chicken was pretty rubbery and sauce was pretty over salted. I was hoping everything was made from scratch there but it didn't taste like it. My husband's bowl for $25 was super overpriced for having bunch of noodles 4 pieced of super thin tuna and couple of shrimp. Service was OK, I was hoping for a much more friendlier server. Pictures of our food are included. Also they do charge extra if you pay with credit card( picture of receipt included). I wanted to love it,but i didn't, so sadly we won't be back!!!

Google
Such a lovely little restaurant. We got the kitchen snack, which ended up being smoked salmon deviled eggs. Amazing. The mussels were some of the best I’ve ever had. Drinks were also delicious and fun. We’ll be back!

Google
We have been here many times but tonight they seem to be short of staff. Food on menu has changed a little. Tuna appetizer could be better. No ranch dressing please! Kimchi was good, more of that with it. Main dishes were excellent. Had the salmon and the burger. We’ll try again another time. Hope this place is going to stay around.

Google
It was ok. Was a little underwhelming... The espresso martini was good. Ordered the shrimp cocktail, which I had to send back because it was chewy. The charcuterie board was extremely basic. They did have a floral cooler, but for being a flower shop, there weren't any flowers on the table or anything. Again, just kind of underwhelming. Not terrible, not great.

Google
We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a very long time and decided our wedding anniversary would be a good time. The drinks were very good. The mussel appetizer was very good. I got the steak entree and my husband got the pasta with salmon. All of it was undersalted. The dessert came in a plastic container that you would get at a grocery store and was 12$. It was unfortunately underwhelming.

Google
Came here with my husband. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was great. It’s kind of a flower shop and restaurant in one. The service was great, really kind and explained the dishes for us. Will definitely be back.

Google
Delicious. From the Martinis and Cocktails to the tuna and calamari. Haven’t enjoyed these foods with paired flavors in a long time. Chef delivered and did not disappoint. The food was perfect and the freshness kinda shocked me. Mom and pop shop with both owners involved and kicking butt. Not easy and will be back for dinner with their consistent changing menu and entrees. Loved it.

Yelp
Food is excellent. Friendly service . Cozy atmosphere. Happy hours are great . Highly recommended

Yelp
I had the salmon dinner last night. it was excellent. it was served with couscous and fresh crisp green whole beans with a few Brussels spouts thrown in. there was a light but very flavorful sauce on everything that was incredible.

Yelp
KAYLA. That's all I have to say. Probably one of the best servers I have had...ever. She was so amazingly sweet, checked on us all the time and was overall our favorite part of our evening. We all said that we were going to come back just to visit her The food was quite good. All of us got a steak salad ($24) and it didn't disappoint. A nice steak, cooked how we asked, a lot of potatoes and roasted carrots in it. We all had plenty of cocktails and each one was delish. The bartender deserves kudos too! We sat on the back deck which is surrounded by greenery. The night was as warm as the lifting and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. I recommend this place for sure!!

Yelp
Cute little place People were very nice Food was good We were in there on a Friday evening and it wasn't busy - hopefully it was bc of the weather The menu is small but the food is good. My rating would be 3.5 stars if I could do that!
google avatar

Cecilia M.

Yelp
It's a cool place the way they incorporated the restaurant, flower shop and sell miscellaneous things as well. The drinks are good as well. As for me it's a little expensive. I do want these local restaurants to flourish, so give it a try and make your own judgement.

Yelp
We came here as a group for a bridal party. We had the back room reserved which had its own bar. Absolutely loved this place. It was cute and local. The food we had was constantly being rotated and replenished. The bartenders were quick with drinks. Cute place in a small shopping center. Totally recommend coming here for a quick bite and drinks.

Yelp
My husband and I came on a Friday with a reservation and had an amazing date night. We both tried a cocktail that was excellent. We didn't get an appetizer so we could thoroughly enjoy our entrees. My husbands pasta dish was rich and delicious and my ahi tuna poke was fresh and perfectly prepared. The staff was all very nice. I highly recommend!

Yelp
This place is a hidden treasure! We were looking for a Sunday brunch spot and this came up. We sat outside and it was such a wonderful experience. We split the deviled eggs (yum) wedge salad with grilled romaine (yum). I'm a dressing nut and tried their green goddess and blue cheese. Both were AMAZING. My friend had the mushroom toast and I had the hot chicken sandwich. Both were huge and delicious. The server was sweet and efficient. Brunch is limited and the host said we must come back to try a lunch or dinner on another night. . It's in what I guess is also a gift/flower shop-hence the cute name. Atmosphere is really nice and also has a neat front patio for hanging out.

Yelp
This was an EXPERIENCE! First of all it's a restaurant AND florist. And, when everyone asked how I located it I explain it took me one week to research it using the following criteria: proximity (somewhere almost equal distance for most attendees - various parts of Cleveland, Akron, and Elyria), a place no one had been previously, something unique about the space, and something where the group could be together and folks could drop in and out with comfort for 20-30 guests! In the Weeds checked every box AND Aaron our server was outstanding. Wonderful cocktails, scrumptious appetizers and food, plus beautiful flowers. Great location for an event. Definitely recommending for all seeing my review. :)

Yelp
Fantastic food and fast service. Fresh. Tasty. Reasonable prices. Only drawback. It was so loud, the five of us could barely have a conversation in the back of the restaurant where we were seated. I'd still go back. I'd request to sit in the front.
google avatar

Tony K.

Yelp
The inside of the building looks very nice. We went for happy hour and ordered the calamari, potatoes, and cauliflower. We also split the chicken sandwich. The food was not the best, tasted like it was right out of a frozen box.

Yelp
I have to be honest, upon arrival to this place from the outside, I was nervous. It's a tiny parking lot, that looks like a strip mall type store front, with just a store for the florist in front. But the reviews looked promising so we went in for dinner on a Saturday night. We were led down a short hall into the back dining room that has a full bar to the left. It was like entering a magical land. All my fears were settled as we sat in the middle of the room with a wonderful waitress, whose name I cannot believe I can't recall now, with the great ambiance and lighting. Tattoo on her chest, incredibly knowledgeable on the menu and drinks, conversated with us. She was awesome!! We started with drinks. Purple Rain, The Leo, a Manhattan, Nipsey Hussle.... OK there were more and they were all great. Very well crafted. I explained that I was vegan, my daughter wanted a steak, my uncle is a foodie, and his partner was dairy free. This waitress hooked us up! My daughter ordered the steak, asparagus, and the pierogis. She said the steak was just slightly undercooked but it was incredible and actually said that if it was cooked more it might have ruined it. My uncle got the chicken picatta, and his partner got the salmon. They both raved about their meals. I of course had to ask what the chef could make off menu for me as a vegan. Mother of God did she nail it!! Vegan or not, go there immediately and ask them to make this dish. You will be so happy you did. And to finish the wonderful meal me and my uncle's partner shared a vegan strawberry ice cream. I don't know if she or I inhaled the majority of it but we were so happy to actually have an option for dessert! So awesome to have a place that can cater to all dietary needs. Go there. Seriously, just do it.

Yelp
So this was my third time here. I've had decent experience in the past. However this time was not good. Server was great. I wish I had remembered her name. However she did let my drink go dry with out offering more at the end of my meal. So I went in at 4:15 very, we sat down ordered some apps. Took a little while for those but nearly as long as it took for a Steak Salad and a cuban sandwich to come out. When asked we were told most people were just now coming to work. Steak Salad was very underwhelming for $24 and the steak was over cooked. I didn't say anything because the food took a long time to begin with. the Cuban sandwich was very light on the proteins. I should h ave taken a picture. I skipped the Key Lime Pie since the rest of the meal was disappointing. Also learned the use vegetable oil for the fries etc. Why? This is supposed to be a place that's a cut above in terms of quality. Perhaps not so much. With tip the bill came to $76. I don't think I'll be back.

Yelp
Presentation was great, food was mediocre. Service was a bit slow, but the server working our area seemed to be doing the best she could with the large number of people in the restaurant. Had the hot chicken with homemade pickles. Didn't realize this was just a normal chicken breast with a hot sauce (Franks?) drizzled on top. And the pickles were almost non existent. Had a glass of the Cabernet, which wasn't that good, but the Manhattan made up for it. Deviled eggs were good too. Back dining room was way to loud for my liking, but to be expected with the vaulted ceiling without any acoustical dampening. With the exception of the florist, the place looks just like it did when the Mexican joint was here.

Patricia K.

Yelp
WAY overpriced and under amount of food for servings. We had to beg for ketchup for the 20 fries that came with the overpriced dry sandwich with one thin slice of meat an cheese on it. My friend sent her salad back twice because they kept making it wrong and finally just asked for it to be removed from the check. Pasta at 30 bucks a plate should come with bread, not charged 2 bucks for bread. Servings so small you are hungry 2 hours later. Go somewhere better where your money buys you the amount of GOOD food the way you want it and an amount for the money!

Yelp
At first glance, the place looks beautiful. Looks clean too. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area. Small but lovely. I wish I could give the food a good review but unfortunately I can not. The chicken sandwich was not packed with flavor as was promised by the waiter. The Elk sandwich was lacking in flavor. Way way undercooked. It was raw in the middle. I did not return the food because it had sauce and toppings on it like onion and mushrooms. The waiter did ask me if I wanted to have them cook it longer but it would have been a big mess. I don't like to waste food so I endured the sandwich, thanked them, paid my bill and left. We left disappointed. I would not recommend this place to any one I know.

Yelp
Good food for decent price alongside amazing service and such a fire, quiet, cozy setting. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
This is a hidden treasure. We visit often because it's close to home and the food is so good, we crave it. Drinks are on point, all the bartenders are a pleasure to talk to, and the wine menu is one of our favorites. Love going when it's nice out to hit the patio and live music on Mondays. So happy to have this atmosphere and quality without having to go downtown. Get all my arrangements from them for my home, business and special occasions. Make sure to hit a special event like a wine tasting. Superb!!

Yelp
Cute spot in North Royalton that features a bar, patio, dining area and florist. Eclectic indeed. We had dinner with another couple and sat in the main dining area. The calamari app was perfectly cooked and enjoyed by all. I had the poke bowl and my gf had the pork chop. The poke bowl was really tasty with the tuna a standout. She loved her pork chop, tasty and juicy with a light cream sauce. Service was excellent. She knew everything about anything on the menu and stopped by just the right amount of times. We look forward to stopping by again.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! We tried it because of the high Yelp ratings and we were not disappointed. There are two areas to sit: a typical restaurant-type seating area right as you walk in the front doors, and a bar area in the back. They also have flowers and local artwork for sale out in front. We ended up in the bar area and it was very nice. It had the feel of an upscale restaurant as opposed to a typical bar. I'm a seafood guy, so I tried the halibut. It was great; I'd definitely order it again. Although next time I visit, I'll probably try the Cuban sandwich that looked and sounded really good. My wife had the steak, which was a top sirloin. She enjoyed it. They have Happy Hour specials on appetizers, so In the Weeds is a good "after work" option. In the Weeds is great. We've been twice and will certainly visit again. You can easily make reservations on their website, so I'd recommend doing that just to be safe.

Yelp
A restaurant within a Florist shop? Yes and it works! Food was original and delicious but... OMG the cocktails are original and to die for. We tried several and all were winners. "The Baby Doesn't Look Like Me" goes down way too easy!

Yelp
Love love food, atmosphere and staff. Love returning. Worth a visit, or 2 or 100. Relaxing, romantic worth it

Yelp
A friend of mine had her wedding reception here and the food was phenomenal, we ordered cocktails too and they were very strong and delicious. I will be back for brunch!

Yelp
Live music on a Monday evening, what a treat! And the duo who performs - Company Housing - is really good. The singer has a really good voice. Outdoor deck also very nice. Anyway, food and craft cocktails remain high quality and the music and being open on a Monday make this a great option out, worth a drive over. Derrick at the bar provides friendly and attentive service - he also knows a few good riddles if you want to exercise your brain a little bit (ask him!)

Yelp
Very nice. Loved the atmosphere. My husband and I went for date night. I got the cheese and meat board he got the Cuban sandwich. Very tasty. Small menu but very good. Good food. You won't be disappointed. Shout out to Ryan our server. Excellent service.

Smartin S.

Yelp
Place is small in the back room. Loved the ambience though very cute and cozy. The food was ok I had the Cuban which was good too much meat though. Loved the roasted potatoes rather then your stand by fries

Yelp
Held a bridal shower at this restaurant and it was wonderful !!! All the staff were attentive , kept drinks filled and made sure food was prepped and ready . They offered a flower bar for guests to make their own bouquets , which was the perfect party favor , they wrapped and tied the Bouquets for guests to take home ! All the food was tasty and they offered a great selection .

Yelp
Can't believe I haven't been here earlier. Great atmosphere and excellent food. Highly recommend to anyone in the area

Yelp
This was my first time at In The Weeds. My first impression was a quaint, classy restaurant. The Happy Hour crowd was big and the view in the bar area was a plus. Service was Excellent! Staff made me feel welcomed and comfortable. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, which was prepared well and generous portion. Drink menu was good but was disappointed in the food menu that it was too limited but focused on healthy choices. I was planning on ordering a burger; unfortunately, it was not on the menu. Would definitely like to try the brunch on Saturday or Sunday. Highly recommend In the Weeds.

Bob L.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients, tasty food, fun cocktails, great service, cool vibes. A fun place for brunch, dinner, or happy hour.

Yelp
What a lovely little place. Fabulous food. Love it. Will definitely be back. Had live music outside on the back patio but we decided to stay inside.

Yelp
I almost want to keep this place to myself. My girlfriend used to live in North Royalton, and while it's a nice enough little town, there was NOWHERE to go for dinner or drinks. In the Weeds answers the call. My mom was in town visiting from Denver and I wanted to take her some place new. I found In the Weeds on yelp and figured I would give it a try. Nothing ventured... I made reservations for 6:30 on a Thursday night (I think it was a Thursday). Our table was ready on arrival. We were seated at a high top in the back by the bar. I thought that was a little strange. Having reservations I figured that we'd be seated at a table, but that was neither here nor there. The high top was fine. We started with a bottle of wine and Burrata. Both were excellent. For mains they have a limited menu, including a couple sandwiches, a pasta dish, and a dish for every protein (i.e. chicken, pork, steak, fish). This is a positive thing. I found that In the Weeds focuses their attention to a few dishes, but they do them all very well. I recall asking our server if she would recommend the pork special. I wanted to hear from her what she thought. She was quick in response and told me that it was excellent. I reconfirmed making sure I wasn't going to be getting some thin, dried out piece of "shoe leather," and she assured me that I would not be. She was right. It was delicious. We finished our evening with a slice of chocolate torte. Divine! In the Weeds was far beyond that which I expected. This is a true hidden gem, worthy of 5-stars.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this on a whim and we're very, very impressed. The drink menu was very extensive and delicious. The spin dip was great and the tacos were very tasty and simply done. The pasta my wife had seemed to be homemade. She loved it. We will definitely be back to try their brunch! After hearing the waitress talk about the brunch it sounds even better than dinner!

Athena S.

Yelp
I just found this place and arranged to meet several members of CC for brunch. Didn't know what to expect and I was truly impressed! The service was excellent, and the food was also. A beautiful place that I would highly recommend. I'll certainly be back.
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
Great cocktails. Tasty food. Cool bar atmosphere inside and a dog-friendly deck out back. What's not to love? We had the lion's mane mushrooms, deviled eggs, and chicken piccata. All very good. This is easily one of the best restaurants in the area.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
wow such a cute place! I love how it feels when you walk in. I can't believe I haven't been in here yet love the food and the fact that you can buy beautiful flowers by the stem
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
After an hour, our entrees did not arrive. We understand. Things happen. Mistakes are made. Our concern is that no one noticed. The staff was wonderful. Everyone was apologetic. Our question remains, How does a staff completely ignore the one table not getting served? We happened to be in the area. The restaurant is far from our home. The likelihood of returning is minimal. For the sake of regular customers, pay attention. Why have you served and cleared adjoining tables and this table is still nibbling on appetizer bread? Your server said, "We're better than this." Are you? That would not be our observation.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
This is a great little restaurant. The food was great, the drinks are interesting, and our waitress was very nice and helpful. We also had the spinach dip, the bread service, the rhubarb pie, and the key lime pie. We left stuffed. Feeling good from the drinks, and talking about what we will try the next time we dine here. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Lovely little place. Menu changes seasonally. Fresh ingredients and food cooked to perfection. Cocktails are excellent. We try to eat there often.

Lisa D.

Yelp
In the weeds is truly a hidden gem staff and service is always excellent and friendly.. food is excellent always fresh with a unique flare, drinks are handcrafted with finest quality definitely recommend.

Jodi G.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. The drinks menu had a really cool and interesting variety of mixed drinks, wines and beers. The shareable plates were so delicious. We ordered the smoked corn salsa, the flatbread and the burrata salad. There wasn't anything left on any of our plates. The tomatoes were sourced locally and were the best I've ever had. I can't wait to go back.

Colleen H.

Yelp
My wife and I dropped in here after looking on the internet for somewhere to eat while we were in the North Royalton area. We were pleasantly surprised by how great the food and service were here. It's a very casual kind of place, but the food was elegantly prepared. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, intimate, & gluten free/vegetarian friendly! We enjoyed our food and the wine list.
google avatar

Mela P.

Yelp
Really unique dining experience with beautiful plants and cut flowers in an open and beautifully lit space. Great view in the back room. And the food is delicious!
google avatar

Meg K.

Yelp
This place is SO cute!! Huge plus for NoRo! Super clean, cute & Instagram-worthy. Can't speak for the flowers part because we just had drinks but the cocktails were wonderful. Our bartender was so friendly, very clean bar and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Kari F.

Yelp
What a beautiful place! I sat at the bar and enjoyed two cocktails and dinner. Brittany was friendly and gave me wonderful recommendations for dinner and drinks. Loved the Hummus Board, which was like a vegan version of the Meat and Cheese board. The key lime pie was sweet, sour and perfect. Big plus to this place is they're open on Monday night, when it seems like every other place is closed. Can't wait to come back for one of their themed events.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I hate to write this review because I want to keep this place a secret. This is hands down one of the BEST restaurants in North Royalton. Great service and great atmosphere!
