The Willamette Valley: An Under-the-Radar Tour | Condé Nast Traveler

"The Independence Hotel makes for a great modern-day settlement, right on the banks of the Willamette River. Opened in fall 2019, the terracotta and sand-colored structure and the newly refurbished Riverwalk path alongside it signal boom times in the town, due to its commutable convenience to the state capital of Salem and a reputation as a hotspot for agricultural tech. Some of the 75 rooms feature terraces with river views. The hotel’s roof deck, however, offers an even more expansive view, along with a firepit."

Yelp
So many good things on my two night stay! First off, the complimentary breakfast and restaurant met my dietary needs! So I didn't need to stress about food, HUGE plus for me. The staff was so helpful and sweet. Beautiful runs at the waterfront trail that's right in front of the hotel. My room was out of this world! I'll be dreaming of the kinship suite forever. The rooftop lounge was probably my favorite part, gorgeous view of the river and the Osprey. I'll be back for sure. Elegant, fun, colorful, beautiful location. I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
I was surprise that we're entering a hotel, that is so upgraded, I thought for awhile, we're back in a 5-stars European hotels! (We just got back from there, so I know). I love the view of the Willamette River. I love the washroom, shower, sink, and the lights in the room, the mirrors in the room made the room even brighter and bigger. The door to the washroom, sliding door. Even though I didn't use the iron/board, I like the fact they have those. The rooms were clean, like they cared and pillows and bed comfortable. I love the fact, they have soft, cushion, velvety chairs, to matched the room. Negative: The desk chair, cushion good, but I sink down so low as I sit down to use my laptop on the desk. It does swivel! We stayed here two nights. The buffet breakfast, the only meat was bacon. Not a lot of selection for dinner, that's when we ordered Caesar Salad and Pasta with Grilled Chicken (they need to improve that). Bonus for the extra 4th of July chocolates, we got when we got in the hotel, and during the fireworks! July 4th, another positive, we were able to have front row seats for the fireworks! It's right on your face, and because of the wind gusts, we seldom smell smoke, and I didn't think it was too loud. (I've had relatives who watched the Oaks Park in Portland, and they said it was TOO loud). I think the wind carried it over further, so the sound was OK with me. My husband couldn't find his iPad, and the hotel said they found it, from the same room we were at. (It turned out, he found it in the truck, so we didn't have to drive back to Independence to pick it up). (We forgot to let the staff know, we were there for 2 reasons: to do my 4th of July events in Monmouth, and to celebrate with a big bang, our 50th Wedding Anniversary). I can't remember, the last time we were able to watch the fireworks together, by ourselves. This was a treat for us! We would like to come back in 2025, same time, same days, facing the river again! Thank you!

Yelp
Everything was lovely to the last detail. The staff was pleasant, proactive, and detail oriented. The restaurant was delicious. The complimentary mini cupcakes were delightful. The rooms were clean and crisp and comfortable.

Yelp
I loved The Independence Hotel! The views are spectacular and were my absolute favorite part. Our room was super clean. The staff could not be more friendly. The area is very walkable and the town is very cute. I recommend taking a walk down the Main Street and checking out the shops. There is a little of everything, a couple sports bars, some knick knack shops, a bakery and more. There is a restaurant in the hotel that offers a free breakfast buffet, which is very good. We tried their late night bites as well, which was a little over priced, but still good. The drinks are creative and strong at the bar. I highly recommend The Independence Hotel.

Yelp
The restaurant, Territory, is absolutely superlative. The food was excellent, as were the adult-beverages served. The four of us ate in what I'd call a solarium, a glass-enclosed seating area that overlooks the Willamette River: the room was heated by decorative gas propane heaters that were as beautiful as they were functional. Service was excellent, attentive without being fawning or cloying. Well done.

Yelp
The hotel in a cute little town is an oasis in rural Oregon. Four floors of nice rooms with comfortable beds and linens and an ac that's actually quiet so you don't have to hear it shutting on and off all night! The hotel parking was easy and plentiful, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the rooms ate spacious and clean. We appreciated the hot tub reservation system and the buffet style complimentary breakfast in the morning. There is a rooftop bar that you can have beverages or even order food. It's such a big and luxurious hotel for such a tiny town, but no complaints here.

Yelp
I couldn't imagine how this place could get better. The way it was architected, the furniture they put in, the space itself... I was going to sit out on the patio (brand new, as of my stay on 07Jul2021) but the bartender (very friendly) recommended checking out the rooftop. I could imagine it was better than the patio but sure enough! My room (204) was in the NW corner and was massive. Beautiful bathroom and wonderfully quiet. A semi-good view of the river but mainly looking towards the downtown area with massive windows and heavy light-blocking curtains. If I lived near this place, I'd want to make it an occasional weekend getaway, it's that good!

Yelp
We are staying here for my sister in laws wedding, and having an incredible time so far! Everyone from the front desk, to the servers, bartenders, and the cleaning crew are so helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The majority of interaction with staff has been while winding down at the bar, and the service has been impeccable. The bartender Corab so sorry if I've spelled his name wrong) is super friendly, helpful, and knows what he's doing behind the bar as well as answering staff and guests questions about drinks. The drinks are awesome and the charcuterie platter I brought back to the room was very tasty. All the other servers and bartenders I've interacted with have been wonderful as well. I can't say enough about the wonderful customer service I've received here. Also, beds are comfy and the room is very clean. Thank you guys so much! Oh also! If you are bringing kiddos, there's an awesome little playground/park a quick 5 minute walk right next door.

Yelp
Stayed: Aug. 5th to Aug 7th, 2020 (2 nights) Room 422 (Eola Amity Suite), 2 Adults The Independence Hotel is the centerpiece of a major revitalization project, that is being undertaken in the heart of downtown Independence. A multiple sized market priced apartment complex, Independence Landing & Osprey Point, is being built right next door to the hotel... With the hotel opening late 2019 to early 2020, everything in this hotel is still fresh & new, from the landscaping to the room furnishings. With the Willamette River, a stones throw away from the hotel, it is the focal point of the Independence Hotel. With landscaped walkways/bike paths and the Riverview park adjacent to the hotel, it doesn't get any easier to explore the outdoors from this hotel... All in all, the staff was courteous and professional. However, on several occasions, when walking pass the lobby, two hotel staff members were having a conversation, at the front desk, but they did not bother to look up and acknowledge us or any other guests for that matter...the Contemporary decor that is seen throughout the hotel common areas and rooms gives this hotel a crisp energized feel, that blends in very well with the natural surroundings outside the hotel....At this 75-room boutique hotel, its the little details, such us the numerous in-room charging outlets to the 4 electric car charging parking stalls, that makes this hotel unique and the potential to be a special place to stay.

Yelp
I was blown away at how wonderful this hotel was in this tiny town!! From the great decor to the bar and restaurant it was impeccable! So clean and wonderfully appointed. Even the outside dining was stunning. It included a free breakfast and believe me, we would have paid for this breakfast as it wasn't your typical 3 star hotel free breakfast. We had an amazing view over the river and would recommend this awesome hotel to anybody! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This was a great weekend and we were so pleasantly surprised by how nice the hotel was. brenda and makayla were such sweethearts and made us feel super welcome!!

Yelp
WE LOVED STAYING HERE!!! The hotel is very clean, staff are great! The gal that worked the night of 6/28 (didn't catch her name was fantastic-if you're reading this management give that girl a raise or a management position) she was very friendly and accommodating when I accidentally booked the wrong Sunday. A trip to the hot tub is a must, the water is just right and it's huge and secluded. The bed is extremely comfortable, sheets are clean and cozy.. we got amazing sleep. If you're headed to Salem it's definitely worth the 20 minute drive outside of town! They also have a roof top deck with a fireplace and seating for food. All around great place to stay!

Yelp
I love this place as it's home to me. But I was disappointed to see the staff not enforcing the mask mandate. The couple ahead of me at check in were not wearing masks. When I asked the person that checked me in she said, well it's my first day and I'm not going to fight about it. But she didn't even say anything to them so how could it be a fight? I hope they take this seriously as it's their responsibility to enforce the mandate and ensure guests feel comfortable.

Yelp
Great place from beginning to end. Warm greetings and found the right room for us and our small dog. All rooms are pet friendly. And we were given a price competitive with Expedia. Although opened in 2019, everything is still fresh and new. A great setting by the river. And the restaurant is tops. Amazing food. The complimentary breakfast is tops as well. We know good food and they have it. Highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Everything was a step above, from the oversized coffee mugs to the wine opener in the room. It was very clean and well taken care of. We enjoyed some time on the rooftop and met some great people. In addition employees Sam and Maliya who worked the front desk on opposite shifts as well as Sophia who worked in the restaurant. Hats off to the hiring manager in hiring these wonderful young people. We will definitely return and stay at The Independence again. I highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
On Vaca with kids. This hotel is a great place to stay, right off the river . Sam at the front desk is awesome. He is warm, friendly and curteous. Clean ample rooms , nice decor. Amazing water pressure . Complimentary breakfast is awesome. Breakfast burrito is huge! Yelp
Love this place! I stayed in one of the King suites and was immensely comfortable. I had a full size refrigerator, microwave, sink, coffee machine and plates, etc. Internet was great. The hotel is new, modern and clean. There's a sense of spaciousness to the hotel, so you immediately relax. Not to mention the gorgeous river running right next to the hotel/restaurant and my room had view of needlepoint river and then a park on the other side. Huge birds that looked like eagles would fly by - I think Ospreys. Simply stunning. Also, love the restaurant. I was traveling alone for business, so I sat at the bar for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the bartender, Natalie. She made amazing drinks and had great recommendations. I even had the first Brussels sprout recipe I liked (and many have tried before). They serve a free hot breakfast (delicious), which I feel is a major steal and I'd rather have some of the below items and pay for breakfast. Let me just say, I stayed at the Nine's in Portland when I flew in and was disappointed. I was relieved to check in here. I will be back regardless, but I do have a wish list: * Room service * More variety on the menu or different choices between lunch and dinner. * A smart TV (with Netflix etc) or more stations or movies for sale. I ended up watching my computer because the 40 stations they offered were so limited. * A hook for towels and robes next to the shower * A comforter or more blankets (there's only one blanket covered with sheets on the bed). * Bedtime treat? Many nice hotels do this. The Allison in Newberg serves a bedtime treat - local chocolates. Please note that the current rates are fair without any of the above, but I would pay more if some of the above were included...

Yelp
We visited this new restaurant in Independence yesterday to celebrate our 29th anniversary, and we had a really pleasant time. The waitress was very focused on our needs and was apologetic about several of the available menu items being sold out. We ended-up buying the Tillamook Mac and Cheese along with a wonderful steak, and the food was excellent. What might have been a little nice added touch to the steak plate was more than six long green beans. We shared our entrees, so three green beans a piece seemed particularly underwhelming. Prices seemed a tad high also for the area. As my wife and I have a background in the arts and creating welcoming spaces, I'd like to make four observations or suggestions regarding the interior design. First, the lighting feels pretty antiseptic white with the harsh fluorescent bulbs above. More subdued lighting would create a more intimate environment on cold, dark evenings. (The fire behind us was a nice touch, though.) Second, if the tables were pushed a little closer to the windows, it might also create a more pleasant atmosphere. My wife felt our table was oddly placed as far as distance to the wall--like we were on display a bit. Third, the whole utilization of space seems a little off kilter here. The space next to the windows should be prioritized for tables, but an inordinate of space (in proportion to the the total area) is given to the bar. If the bar were moved from an east-facing direction to a south-facing direction, it might help a lot. Speaking of the bar, the wallpaper behind the bar is already bubbling out a bit already. Fourth, the restaurant could really use some good artwork--especially concealing the wallpaper issues. Glass art featuring bright colors might be especially helpful in lessening the "whiteness effect." Because of the hard floors, sounds also seem amplified in the confined space. Rugs or carpet might help here, but I understand that they'd make cleaning a little more time-consuming at times. In short, this is a great start. Some strategic thinking, though, could turn this into an outstanding space to come for a meal with friends and family. PS. I also vote for a longer Sunday brunch, so people getting back from church in Salem could potentially make it.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have this great place in a beautiful setting in our small community! Everything has been selected with great care - the orientation for the view, the fishing and decor and a thoughtful, if seemingly limited, menu. And really super staff! Lunch was a GIANT piece of halibut and heaps of shoestring fries. The fish was perfect (although I was told it will be leaving the menu soon) and my friend's burger was perfectly done. Looking forward to trying more offerings. **I also got to attend an early days catered party and the food was amazing, but nothing could beat the rooftop view**

Annemarie S.

Yelp
We absolutely love our stays at the Independence Hotel. So many good things to write about it's hard to know where to start. The staff are friendly, gregarious, and truly enjoyable to interact with, especially in the restaurant. We have eaten there many times now, and haven't had a single dish we didn't love (favorites are the pesto sandwich, spinach artichoke dip, and cheesecake). The rooms are beautiful, clean, spacious, and intentionally designed (we especially love how soft the beds are). At present, the hotel has taken many precautions to make sure guests and staff are kept safe, and we have even stayed twice just since the pandemic began and had zero concerns either time. The rooftop and beautiful river views are serious bonuses, and the hotel has a calm, serene vibe that is perfect for a getaway/recharge. We look forward to our future stays in this lovely hotel.

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed here for two nights while she attended a camp at WOU. From the second we got there to the minute we left, we were treated with the highest levels of customer service. Check-in, dinner, breakfast, house keeping were all amazing experiences. I want to thank the entire staff for a great time. If I ever return to that part of Oregon again, with out a doubt, I will be staying at the Independence Hotel. It was hands down the best hotel experience I have ever had.

Yelp
We celebrated new Years Eve with an early dinner and the food was (mostly) lovely. The salmon was perfectly moist with a crisp skin, roasted potatoes were flavorful. The chicken was all right but, as is often the case, a little overdone and a bit dry at the edges (though seasoned well). The polenta and mushrooms were rich and delicious and cheesecake was very nice. Wine by the glass was not good- please improve the choices to include a great red, even if not local (not a pinot fan here). I settled on a weirdly flat and watery tempranillo but would have loved (and paid for) something better. The service was fantastic, knowledgable and friendly. The dining area is nicely done but definitely agree with another review that the harsh fluorescent bulbs overhead should go. Aim for warmer, cozier lighting and you have a winning destination for dinner. We'll be back.

Yelp
The territory restaurant is classy, casual and the food is fresh. The service is great, staff is friendly and overall the place has a great vibe. I think this place will be around for awhile!

Yelp
My family and I have been wanting to try the The Territory Restaurant since it opened and last night we finally did. We were not disappointed! We went in for dinner. We were greeted warmly and sat at a table by the bar. It was already dark by the time we got there so we did not see the view but I'm sure it's great! The service was top notch. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. We started with the Brussel Sprout appetizer and it was amazing! There was 4 of us and we were all able to enjoy it as it was a generous portion. I snapped a photo but only after we had all been eating some already. For entrees we had the Tillamook Cajun Mac & Cheese, the halibut fish and chips, and the pork duo burger. Everyone enjoyed their entrees and felt the quality and flavors were on point. The fish was cooked to perfection as well as the burger. The mac & cheese was so creamy and deliciously seasoned with a Cajun kick. We left satisfied with our first (of many) dining experiences at Territory.

Yelp
Our first time here. We had 4 in our party. Service was great and food was good. We will definitely be back. Beautiful setting on the river!

Brenna K.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful! We went during COVID-19 and the staff and facility worked especially hard to make accommodations and make our stay the absolute best experience it could be! So glad we went!

Marsha S.

Yelp
The best free breakfast at a hotel I have had. Large clean rooms. Pet friendly. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
We were excited to finally have a hotel in Independence to stay when we come to visit our daughter. Didn't have many expectations but can't say enough about this place. Rooms and decor are beautiful and warm, staff extremely helpful and friendly, knowledgeable about the area and more than willing to share. Locale is perfect, right on the river and walking distance to downtown. Breakfast included with homemade Marionberry jam absolutely amazing!!!

Steve H.

Yelp
The Independence Hotel is a one of kind boutique hotel. This is an AMAZING place to stay. We stayed in late October, 2020, in one of the river rooms, which has a great view of the Willamette River! The room was spacious and had room for bicycles in the entry way, with extra space. This is a fun place to stay with a bike trail, view of the river, wineries, and a charming town which is easily walkable from the hotel. The hotel room was luxurious and very functional, and the bathroom/shower was spa-like! In addition, the hotel has a restaurant named, "Territory" downstairs, which is excellent! This is a beautiful restaurant facing the beautiful Willamette River, beautiful bar area, fireplace, patio - gorgeous! The hotel staff, as well as, the restaurant staff, were very welcoming and extremely helpful! Totally enjoyed our stay, and we will be back! This is definitely a 5-star hotel!

Yelp
Just had dinner at Territory, the Independence Hotel restaurant. We live in Salem and heard about the brand new hotel and restaurant. Went with friends to celebrate a birthday. Food was fantastic. Halibut fish and chips was amazing. Super fresh fish and fried perfectly. Big thick piece of halibut with very generous serving of French fries. We had a beautiful cheese plate as an appetizer and I had a burger with no bun because of being gluten free. Cooked perfectly and juicy. Yum. But what truly can't be beat was the service. I had said it was my friends birthday when making the reservation. Every service person said happy birthday to her. They brought her a dessert and the whole restaurant sang happy birthday. It was a very memorable night out. The restaurant is right on the river so beautiful setting. Small and casual looking but very artistic and NW look. Looking forward to our next outing there.
