This was my first visit to India gate . I liked the vibe here , soft music , spacious and dim lights dining and good customer service they provide . Servers are very polite and friendly and make sure you enjoy your food . In St. John’s so far this was the only place where you can get tasty Indian food . Quality and Quantity was pleasant. I would recommend this place for sure 💯

It was tough to imagine that one could and delicious wholesome indian Thali in the far East Coast of Canada. The owner originally from Punjab, india migrated to Canada and have been living here in St Johns over 35 years. The owner is very courteous. After a long travel I reached St John's and I could make it to India Gate restaurant just 10 mins before closing. Owner courtesy welcomed me in and arranged a Indian Thali and a glass of wine The Thali was visually very appealing, with aromatic flavors with perfectly balanced spices in an authentic flavors. If you love indian food, this is a must visit place when travelling to St John's.

We enjoyed a pleasant dinner at India Gate. We ordered a tandoori plate and eggplant dish. The tandoori meats were tender and flavorful. The eggplant was equally well prepared. We also liked the cozy ambiance.

Google
The tandoori chicken, laacha paratha, roti and butter chicken were very tasty. Best I have had in St John’s. Service and ambience is also great. I would go back again. I did not like dessert so much though. The saffron cake tasted like a normal tea cake and the gulab jamun was a bit rubbery. I’m okay with the 18% tip but don’t understand why it’s applied on the total bill including hst.

Google
Lovely! Amazing presentation with tasty food, can’t tell you guys how much yummy it was like malai kofta, pakora, paneer tikka as well butter chicken. Thanks for the great presentation and service. Highly recommended to visit here if someone is missing Indian taste in NL.

I actually got recommended to this place by some of the indians that i met in St. Johns. They told me out of all the indian restaurants in St. Johns that this was the best one. So i went there in the evening as they only open from 4 pm onwards. The atmosphere and ambience of the place are great. Should give them credit where credit is due. They certainly have the space to accommodate a lot of people. The place was not busy as i arrived there at 4:30 pm. I was welcomed by the waitress who took me to the table. Upto now, everything was great, but the moment i saw the menu, i was perplexed! The prices for the food items on the menu are so much expensive. Even if the food is expensive, one would think at least the food would make up for it. So i ordered an aloo gobi masala with butter naan and tandori roti. The aloo gobi masala was just so basic and not worth its price of 23$ I am coming from Moncton, New Brunswick, where the same item would cost less and taste way better. Since this is the only option or the best among the rest would be the reason why the prices are this high, but overall, i am disappointed. Also, apparently, you are required to provide 18% mandatory tips, which i didn't provide because tips are provided on the basis of service, atmosphere, food, and overall satisfaction. I was not satisfied at all.

I have been to this restaurant several times for business dinner, experience was good. I went there twice with my family, they didn’t treat us with respect. One time, the waitress added the tip to the bill, as if they somehow thought that we won’t give a proper tip. I don’t remember doing the same during my official visit. I am starting to think this behaviour is systematic not one off. On another occasion during a summer afternoon we went to the restaurant walk-in. The manager gave us a careful look and said the restaurant is full ( in a disrespectful manner), even though it was very empty we could see. Clearly he assessed, this is a family, from our look - not going to consume alcohol, lot of people in downtown, it’s worth waiting for people who will spend more. From that day I stopped going there.

12 of us spent the evening there, great service beautiful atmosphere. Particularly enjoyed the veggie samosas with the chickpea spicy sauce. Best samosas in the country!

Yelp
Only the best Indian restaurant in the province. Having eaten at Indian restaurants from Vancouver to Paris, this restaurant is still my favourite. The waiters and waitresses are polite and friendly, service is quick, the menu is broad and varied, and the good is excellent !! After a year and a half closed (due to a fire) they are back and better than ever !!

Yelp
We had a delicious work dinner here for a group of 6 and had great service and so many yummy bites. The menu here is vast, so there should be something that will suit any taste in your group. Some of our favorites were the curries and garlic naan - it doesn't get much simpler yet oh-so-comforting than that! The interior is dimly lit so it sets an intimate ambiance - perfect for a special night out.

Yelp
This is the first Indian restaurant I've ever tried and I thought it was great. I would like to go back and try something different. However, what we had was very delicious. Chicken was very tender and the naan was also very delicious. Staff were nice, I felt a little intimidated as I was never to an Indian restaurant and I also lacked knowledge regarding Indian food culture. I called ahead of time to get a place to sit. Over great experience. However a little on the pricey side.

Ken J.

Yelp
Expensive but so worth it , the buffet was brilliant , highly recommended, best Indian food in the city in my personal opinion

Robert R.

Yelp
Great place in St John's. The flavors of the sauces was excellent. My chicken was pretty tough but the lamb was excellent according to my friends. Lot of locals and it seemed a place with good rep. Mango Lassi was also good. My samosa was nicely done. Highly recommend.

Trevor M.

Yelp
We have eaten a lot of Indian food and this was one of our least favorite places. It was very expensive and the flavours were so-so. The vegetable pakora was the best part of the meal. We had heard a lot of great things so maybe we were expecting too much. Staff was super friendly. The food court Indian place in the main Mall beats it hands down.

Panna P.

Yelp
Attitude. 2 hour wait in a nearly empty restaurant. Poor service. This happened once. Thought we would give it a second chance. But then same deal second time. They may be the oldest Indian restaurant in St. John's but the dinosaurs were old as well. Good luck! Good bye!

Tushita C.

Yelp
The worst restaurant, they made me wait for the order 1.5 hours. The treated us very bad when I told him to cancel the order the order because we waited for lobg time then he started yelling at me and said ok cancel the order. Atleast respect the customers man!

Rodney W.

Yelp
Best Indian food this side of the Atlantic! This place deserves notice!! The setting balances relaxation, class, and intimacy. The food is very flavorful, not the dipped-in-sauce-after-cooking blandness that many people pass off as Indian cuisine. If you haven't been, you simply must.

Andre R.

Yelp
It would be hard to find Indian Cuisine, any better in Canada. A gem of a restaurant: quality fresh food, nicely decorated and downtown. Their specialty: naan bread always warm & fresh and tandoori chicken so tasteful & moist. They also have an excellent weekday lunchtime buffet.

Rob C.

Yelp
I've never been a fan of sag paneer but I tried it from someone else who ordered it and it was very good! Paneer had great flavor. Naan was perfect. I got the prawn masala and enjoyed it. Friendly staff.

Timmy T.

Yelp
We went here for my friends birthday lunch, and had the buffet It was plentiful, lots to choose from, and quickly replenished I found the curries to all be a bit too spicy..but other than that, no complaints

TJ Lee W.

Yelp
Best indian food I've ever had. I can't wait to get back to St. Johns and have it again. My girl and I split the dinner for two, and a bottle of wine. We ordered chicken tikka, spicy lamb curry, chana masala, and samosas. All of it was amazing. I even woke up in the middle of the night craving it, and had to have some more. The service was excellent, very low key, and very helpful. I tried to come once before this to sample their lunch buffet, and they were to packed to accommodate us. Now I can see why. Indian Gate, I would give you six stars if I could. Don't change a thing.

Tessa B.

Yelp
For the quality of food, this place is WAY over-priced. $16 for a standard vegetarian dish of poor quality. If this were a cheap, fast place I'd give it a lot more credit, but as is it really leaves a lot to be desired. Good points were friendly staff and pretty good coffee.

Kurt W.

Yelp
Good food but zero value. This is a $$$$ not a $$ restaurant. Good tasting Indian food, comparable to Indian I've had in the San Francisco Bay Area. Decent selection of dishes and ok service. Had to ask for refills. The main thing is the food is good, however I've felt the pricing is excessive. I took 2 friends out for dinner, 3 entrees , 1 appetizer, 2 sides and 3 sodas and the bill came out to $ 150 pre tip. Basically double the price of pretty much any other Indian restaurant I've been to in North America. And that's with no alcohol or seafood.

Garima A.

Yelp
Who would have thought I would find such awesome Indian food in St. John's from all the places. Great vibe, awesome food.

Alison S.

Yelp
Excellent, authentic Indian food. Their lunchtime buffet is a great value and on Friday they have Butter Chicken, one of their most popular dishes, on it. Make a reservation or you will likely be turned away and even with one you may have to wait, especially on Friday. Decor is a little dark but the friendly, efficient staff and the delicious food make up for it.

Rashmi S.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner at India Gate. Coming from Toronto where Indian food is in abundance we were hungry for an Indian meal. The food was superb & the ambiance felt like I was back in India. Thanks to Bobby & crew for an enjoyable meal!

Erin S.

Yelp
As the name implies, Indian cuisine. Very good! Can get very busy and the wait staff isn't the most attentive Kind of pricey :) :) :)

Robert C.

Yelp
I was in town all week and wished I found this place sooner. The food was fantastic. We ordered the lamb vindaloo a chicken tikka Labrador and the Bombay fish! And of course the requisite nan bread! The service was as good as the food if not better as well ! Danielle our waitress offered suggestions and clearly knew the menu. You cannot go wrong here.

Kola C.

Yelp
Spice was good...food isnt the great quality for the price you pay. I am an Indian lives in Toronto, Just wanted to try Indian food in St Johns. Place probably is making of margin of 80-90% for the quality they serve. Service was great though.. Ordered chicken kurma... Was little watery. Then ordered chicken biryani. Its not authentic biryani mixed curry and rice, and its very moist. Very disappointed with the price and quality I got for what we paid...

Yelp
Out for a family dinner in downtown St. John's we decided to try this place. Coming from a town where you can spit and find an Indian restaurant, we are not easily impressed. And we were not easily impressed. Much of the food was very good (not outstanding), but some of the items, the Butter Chicken and saag in particular, were too sweet. It was not bad tasting, but weird and unnecessary. Service and decor were good. Cardamom on the way out was missing the cardamom seeds - so it was just the candy. Again, not bad tasting, just takes away from the authenticity. We'd try it again but....

Sean J.

Yelp
The food is good... Not spectacular, but still very good. Service is Top Notch. Nice atmosphere. Friendly and clean. Prices are actually half decent considering location - downtown. Decent wine and beer selection too! All in all, I will come back here again and I recommended you go too! Get some!!

Daisy K.

Yelp
Really like the food here. Awesome garlic naan, spicy curries (you've been warned), smooth lassi, and crunchy papadums. Like to come here mid-week for a dinner date with the hubby. It is expensive though. Still, when you are craving Indian, this seems to be the place to go. Boisterous take out.

Mark B.

Yelp
Great spot, always consistent, the tandoori chicken is my favorite.

Sarah R.

Yelp
A little pricey for some things. The food is yummy! I recommend it if you love Indian food. I'm a big fan of Palak Paneer... Tandoori Tastes in Sudbury, Ontario (my hometown) has the best and it's hard to compare... but India Gate makes a pretty good one! Mmm. Definitely going back for more. I also love the Gulab Jamun. They make it the way I like here (with syrup)! One place in town I went to didn't have the syrup and I was bummed out, so I would definitely recommend the dessert here. Tasty! :D

Margaret-Anne L.

Yelp
Myself and my parents went to India Gate for the first time last week. I am a vegan and my Mom is celiac (gluten-free). Our waitress was super knowledgable about the menu and what we could eat. We were three people, ordered the dinner for two, were stuffed, and even took some food home! I cannot say enough good things about the service and the food. Simply amazing. (They even did the Naan bread without butter for me!)

Aims F.

Yelp
Delicious! This place is great, the food is exceptional, and the setting is also quite nice. Evening entrees can run a little pricey, but the lunch buffet and take-out specials are very reeasonably priced and also delicious. What's best about this place is consistency, I have never had a bad meal here after eating here upwards of fifty times. The staff are friendly and get to know you quickly - they remembered my name the third time I went there and asked after my family and remembered all their names as well. It is all in all a very welcoming environment with great food and atmosphere.

Craig R.

Yelp
I mostly take out here. I love this place! The owners and staff are very friendly and the food is amazing! Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines and this place is one of the best I've had anywhere!

Vanessa M.

Yelp
I was really excited to try India Gate since I've heard great things, and I truly love Indian food. I went to the lunch buffet on a thursday, the options included butter chicken, beef curry, and a few other vegetable curries. They had pakora's as the app, with some rice and "naan" as a side to the meal. I was extremely disappointed. This was actually one of the worst butter chicken's I have tasted. It seemed as if someone put sugar in it. It did have good quality chicken breast in the curry, but the curry had no flavour . I wouldn't be surprised if it came from a jar and a few modifications were made. The naan was not authentic. I doubt I will come back here, especially for a lunch at $21+. I've been to many places and have tried many different styles of food. This was not authentic Indian flavour. Sorry, wish I did enjoy it.

Louise G.

Yelp
A-OK Lovely Naan. Decent buffet. Can be pricy when you order a la carte, but what the hey, there isn't that many options for Indian food in this town. Parking on street can be difficult at times. Friendly service.

Mark W.

Yelp
I am from Vancouver and moved to St John 's one year ago and I could not believe how good the restaurants in the city are. India Gate honestly is as tasty or better than the best Indian food I've ordered in Vancouver. I'm aware that that doesn't sound right but I stand by it! My partner and I usually get the the Saag lamb, Chicken Tikka labrador, and vegetable Korma. The restaurant ambiance is really cozy but if you are concerned about how much food you are getting you get about 1.5 times to food when you order take out. The dinner for two take out is the best value and you'll have enough for two dinners. I hope you enjoy your time in St John's! Other great places to eat are Piatto, Raymond's, Basho, and Bacalao!

Isaac P.

Yelp
Was recommended to go here by quite a few people in St Johns actually, and found it quite enjoyable. It was certainly popular on a Saturday night so get there early or book ahead. The baji`s, naan, raita, jhalfreji, tikka, were all wonderful and we had a great time.

Amber P.

Yelp
Horrendous service. Which self-respecting restaurant that desires return customers has a reservation system for a buffet? We were nearly turned away, then they self-righteously decided that we could be shafted into a corner and given forty minutes to eat, before their "derserving" customers with reservations began to chow up. Other than initially bringing us drinks, our server never returned except to clear our used plates away, trying to hustle us out of there. Finally, nearly $25 for a buffet, with only Coke to drink? Yeah. No. The food was delicious, however. Maybe the cook should also be runniing the front. Never returning.

Shehzaib R.

Yelp
I called and made the reservation 2 days before. when we went there, they had no record of my reservation. The guy (only indian guy working there) who made the reservation was basically telling me that i was lying about reservation. I had to tell him that i called and asked for a booth by the window and wall. He didnt even let me complete my sentence, "ya, ya, ya, i'll get you a table" he told the waitress to give us a table and the waitress gave us a small table in the dark in the middle of the room. i asked her that i requested a booth by the window as we have a 15 month old. she went and asked the indian guy and he just nodded his head. We decided to leave.while leaving he was on the phone and i tried telling him that how disappointed i was. he didnt even looked at me. the waitress apologized a bunch but he had no worries in the world and didnt even bother to look at us or solve the issue. He's apparently the owner/manager of the place. I have never seen such a egoistic person like him. He shouldn't be in Newfoundland. We had planned to eat there for so long but such bad customer service just ruined our night.

S. N.

Yelp
The food here is delicious - flavourful curries and delicious naan (you must try the garlic naan!). It really is the best Indian food in St. John's, and they know it, which is why the prices are so high. We would go here more often if it wasn't so dang expensive (i.e. $80 for two people). The owners should come up with a quick and inexpensive takeout special for two people - students and the general public would be happy and loyal forever!

Roger G.

Yelp
Excellent! One of my favorite restaurants in St. John's. Compares with the best Indian restaurants I've been to in the U.S..

Frank S.

Yelp
One of my favourite places to eat. The food is consistently delicious, and I have yet to try something I didn't like. I especially like this place because the food is very authentic and way better than anything I could make at home.

Richard B.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our food here. Most authentic tasting Indian food we found in the city. A lot of the items are quite spicy but can be made to taste. Naan bread was delicious and fresh, the masala was very flavourful, same goes for the pakoras, samosas and everything we tried, definitely would recommend!

Tim D.

Yelp
Good but not great food. On the flip side it seems to be the only decent Indian restaurant in the city, and for that reason I will always recommend this spot.

Lesley R.

Yelp
We had India Gate cater a party at work and it was phenomenal. We had them come in and set it up; they brought all their own cutlery and dishes + the warming trays for all the food. Not only did it look great but everyone raved about the food. The butter chicken is sooo yummy! i'd definitely recommend doing this for a catered event.

Peggy W.

Yelp
This restaurant really ought to be investigated for their business practices. I paid $80.00 for my son's Christmas present, as it is a favorite restaurant of his and his girlfriend. On Christmas Eve, yes, Christmas Eve, they went for their reserved dinner and was told by Bobby that there was no proof that I pre-paid for his dinner. My son called me from the restaurant to see what this was about. I was assured by this idiot on the phone when I was paying for this gift certificate that everything was fine, and my son could make the reservation from St. John's, where he happens to live. Nothing to worry about, he said. I am from Orillia, Ontario and I was extremely upset that this happened, called the restaurant and asked for the idiot Bobby and was hung up on twice when I told him I had my Visa statements and banking in front of me and he was paid on Nov 23rd, according to my bank. My son said he was shuffling through bags and finally found a note about this transaction and then said he didn't have any proof - when my son stood firm and said so that's your problem, do you want me to pay and I'll come back with the proof? Then the guy honored the gift certificate. Isn't this embarrassing and shameful? I think something sinister is going on here and I hope patrons are paying closer attention to this guy and how they do business. I also intend to write a review on every site I can since the guy hung up on me twice and would not answer my calls. NEVER, NEVER AGAIN will I do business at any restaurant in St. John's because of this. I will call other people and other restaurants to inform them of this. Not good enough - you wonder what kind of people are running India Gate - either poor business practices or dishonest. Not sure if he is the owner or the manager but I assure you, I will find out. There are many nice restaurants in St. John's, I hear - go and enjoy one of them.
