The Best Indian Restaurants Around Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Indian Kutir is the newest Indian restaurant on East Lake Street, serving a distinctly Northern-style menu of creamy shahi korma, lamb rogan josh fragrant with cumin, beef vinadaloo, and more. (One notable Bengali option is the tilapia, served in a mustardy curry.) The key to a stellar meal here is to order all the necessary sides: Crispy papadum with mango chutney; simple, comforting dal; and flaky paratha or butter naan." - James Norton

We ordered the Lamb Tikka Masala which was excellent! We had garlic naan and coconut naan which compliment the dish very well. I went with a medium spicy level and my wife went with mild. The next time we come here my wife is already saying she will try the next level up. This restaurant is rated high for good reasons and we are glad we chose to come here.

Google
The best India food I’ve had!! The family who owns the restaurant is so nice and accommodating and even brought us a birthday treat since it was a birthday celebration. The curry is our favorite and is so flavorful.

Google
Beautifully prepared and fresh spices you can taste! Vegetarian are well portioned and not overly saucy. I've only had coconut nann at one other place and they are closed. This Coconut Nann could bring you to tears. Pair it with spicy potato& pea AlooMatar and Lamb Samosas and you have a 3course meal....I got a MangoLassi to go...ahhhh perfect lunch.

If you’re looking for a good Indian dining experience, this place should be on your list. The food is fresh and flavorful and the service is friendly and attentive. I ordered the chicken coconut curry and garlic naan for lunch and both were excellent. The curry was smooth and creamy with warm spices, perfect for a cold winter day. The garlic naan was the best I’ve ever had. It arrived at my table warm with bits of garlic fried to the outside of the dough. Each chewy bite was soft and puffy and full of garlic flavor. Also, if you like your food spicy like I do, they will accommodate. I ordered the Hot spice level and it had just the right amount of heat for me.

This is a South Minneapolis gem. All food we tried was very delicious. The Tandoori salmon was a surprise with terrific flavor, spiced perfectly. The service is attentive and kind. We will be coming back often. Great a casual sit down meal or take out.

Google
Delicious food and wonderful service! So many options to choose from on the menu! We ordered several takeout items and were treated to an appetizer of pakora while we waited. The order was prepared rather quickly and everyone was so nice. I've tried many Indian restaurants in the twin cities and this one is quite the hidden gem!! I can't wait to go back!

Google
The food was very good. I had the chicken Dal which was very good. I also like the atmosphere, like how the tables looked and how they had a wall separating the entrance and where people were eating. The place was also very convenient as it was right along route 21 and route 9 buses

Google
A very authentic experience indeed! My husband and I were on a date and chose Indian food for dinner. We were overwhelmed with the many options in Minneapolis, but for sure we wanted something authentic and casual. We’ve both had Indian food before, but a long time ago so don’t remember how the food tastes (aka it was like us trying Indian food for the first time again). Immediately when we got to the restaurant, I noticed that the interior was very “homey”. I wish I got our server’s name, but he was kind, patience, and attentive to us throughout the night. Now, onto the food… it was PHENOMENAL! To start off, we got the lamb samosa which paired with the tamarind and green chutney… so good! For entrees, we got the garlic naan bread, Chicken Tikka Masala, Palak Panner, and Basmati Rice (comes with it). My favorite was definitely the chicken tikka masala! It was a good blend of spice in it and the chicken was tender. Can’t wait to go back again!

Yelp
This place is one of the many hidden diamonds found on lake street. Authentic Indian food and great service! I tried the lamb tika masala, garlic naan, lamb samosa and both deserts and all of it was great! I will definitely be coming back with more of my family. Atmosphere was very cool and we were treated like family as afrolatinos sometimes we don't get the best service at places but this place made us feel at home. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Yelp
The food here is excellent! Incredibly flavorful and large portions! We are so happy to have discovered this restaurant. I would rate this right at the top for us! 5

Yelp
I was a regular customer at India Kutir since it opened a few years ago. It appears to be a family-run modest restaurant. I love to support small local restaurants and always tipped even when ordering carry-out. At first the food was wonderful. My most recent visit was very disappointing. The dish I regularly order - lamb tandoor from the clay oven - tasted like warmed over leftovers from two days ago. The meat was tough and a bit fatty. It was very disappointing. This had happened once before, but I continued ordering from India Kutir, hoping it was a one-off problem. It wasn't, so here I am writing a negative review. The food total with taxes and the online service fee totals $28.00. For this price point, days-old leftovers should not even be considered to be served to paying customers. Expensive food like this should not be so variable in quality. I will spend my eating-out money someplace else from now on.

Yelp
Best Indian food in a restaurant I've ever had. Ingredients are fresh and distinctly flavorful. I'll be happy to return.

Yelp
We order two savory entree dishes with normally very different flavor profiles. They were sweet. And not a hint of sweet - - - barely edible dessert level sweet. So sweet they were almost indistinguishable flavorwise. It was very disappointing. The only thing they got right was the heat level, but when the food is inedible, it doesn't matter.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food. Easy to order online and pick up but could also eat in. We've ordered from there many times. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We went to Fargo ND for the marathon weekend, on the way back to Minneapolis to catch our plane and have a few hours to kill. Came here on the way to see the waterfalls. Great smell the minute we stepped in to the restaurant. Good food, good service.

Anna C.

Yelp
I had dinner with a friend at India Kutir and it was delicious! Excellent pakoras, roti, and chicken spinach mix with herbs that was very fresh and interesting and my friend had a spicier vegetable coconut curry that she also really liked. Friendly service and nice place.

Yelp
Food - Fantastic. I'm no biryani expert, but I do know rice after living in Asia and let me tell you, this place knows how to cook some rice. Every kernel was separate, slightly chewy, and coated in the biryani spices. There were whole cardamom pods in my serving, which is wild considering the cost of those. The mango lassi had a beautiful contrast of thick but refreshing, and wasn't too sweet. I drank more than my fair share. Service - The host and server (same guy) was very kind and communicative when it took my order longer than expected to arrive. This review gets 4 stars from me simply because of the wait time being 30+ minutes. However this place seems to be quite new and I'm confident that they'll work out the kinks.

Yelp
Very good food, fast service. Lots of leftovers. Portions are very shareable. We really enjoyed the Lamb Brianni definitely will be back to try other items on the menu

Yelp
Fabulous Indian food. We did an online order and picked up from the restaurant. The owner was so sweet and charming. He offered me a free mango juice, which was delicious. I thought the food was excellent. We had tandoor chicken, veggie tikka masala, shrimp curry, and palak paneer. We also three varieties of naan, coconut, plain and garlic. we will definitely come back.

Yelp
Phenomenal place. It was completely empty when we went here on a Tuesday evening. The man helping us was very polite, checked in lots and was accommodating with spice, entrees, etc. I added chicken to something that doesn't normally have it and while I got a funny look, he got me exactly that! It tasted so good!!! He gave us desserts after that were included and stuff to pack it all up. Strongly suggest going here! It was nice and calm, setting was relaxing and great ambiance / vibe.

Yelp
Best Indian food in the twin cities by far! Service and food was better than their close competitors in Mpls and St. Paul, and I prefer it. The service was very quick and our waitor was incredibly attentive! They were extra kind and gave us an appetizer on the house. This is the only place I will going to for indian food.

Allie E.

Yelp
Went at like 4 on a Sunday. The owner or manager gave us a free appetizer to try, I forgot what it was but very nice of him and it was very good! Since we were one of the few people there for an early dinner, service was super fast and the server was nice. Food was great, and we got a sent home with our leftovers plus a full mini tub of rice. The signage is kind of minimal, in the dark is a little difficult to see. Inside was small but nice, the neighboring business had some very loud full of bass music, but that's not under this managements control. Overall would recommend !

Yelp
This place has only been open 3 months. I have a go-to Indian place but it's closed on Mondays so we decided to try it out. We got there at 1pm on a Monday holiday and it was empty. In fact, we were the only people there the entire time, although a few folks came in to pick up orders. I'm knocking off half a star (sorry it has to be a whole star) because we waited a long time for our food. At least 45 minutes. I was happy catching up with my friend, so I honestly didn't care, but the 1 year old was not as pleased ;-) However, they made up for it in spades by: 1) bringing out some pakora on the house 2) when it was clear the kiddo was hungry they asked if she could have some mango lassi and brought that out for her 3) it seemed that they cooked everything to-order and 4) it was AMAZING. Plus, they are still new and very small and I never expect perfection from new restaurants. The host/server was so kind and accommodating, he was attentive but was not overbearing. The food came out sizzling (literally) and it was beautiful to look at. I ordered the veggie tikka masala and it was delicious and filling--I had enough left to bring some home. My friend ordered a bunch of food, of which I tried a bite of palak paneer and enjoyed it. Everything looked so well-prepared. I was impressed. I also drank a bunch of the lassi because you can't feed 16 ounces of sugary beverage to a 12 month old and I thought it was great--thick, flavorful, and just the right amount of sweetness, very filling and refreshing. When we packed up leftovers the server took the leftover rice away and brought us a fresh bowl to pack up with our food--I was a little sad to waste the rice we already had, but I recognize that this was considered good service. I wish they had lunch specials so I could get a little less food and save a little money, but I would 100% go here again.

Yelp
Some items are really good, however, a few are just a waste of money (for instance the $42 whatever platter) because not only do they taste average/below par but also not at all worth it in terms of money. Ambience is average. Service is top notch though.

Yelp
Seems like a family run, low key, super cute, no frills restaurant. Great flavors, generous portions and super friendly service.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious! Highly recommend the matar paneer, super creamy and a little sweet!

Yelp
Wonderful authentic flavorful food, excellent service. The owner was so kind to answer all my questions about the food, even give me a recipe for the delicious, sweet creamy rice dessert. So personable and kind, I will definitely be back.

Yelp
The customer service was bang on. Very easy menu to select from. The food was stellar, not too spicy. It was perfect to enjoy the taste.

Yelp
I absolutely love going to a place that's unassuming and an unexpected hidden gem. We were a party of seven and despite a little mix up of one of the orders which they corrected quickly and graciously this place delivered very flavorful food prepared and served with care. Though the atmosphere is far from fancy, the humble environment perhaps enhances the quality of the experience. The two gentlemen that took care of our table were attentive and very friendly. Also the servings left plenty to take home for a tasty second round to enjoy the next day. The next time we come to visit Minnesota we'll be stopping in to enjoy a homey meal at India Kutir! Thanks for the lovely meal.

Yelp
The setting is low-key and the food is fabulous. Everything we had was tasty -- tandoori, curry, palak paneer, shahi korma, samosas, naan -- not a disappointment in the group. Highly recommended. I really hope business picks up (they opened this past winter in the midst of Lake Street construction so I think the opening may have gone unnoticed) because they deserve to have lots of customers with food like this. Will be going back for sure both for take out and to dine in.

Kathy M.

Yelp
Glad I found this place during my 2-month stay in Minneapolis. Indian standards, done very well. Excellent and friendly service as well, with extras brought to the table for us to sample. Once I found the place behind all the Lake Street construction, I went nearly weekly and will definitely go again next time I'm in town.

Molly M.

Yelp
This place is unreal. I'm already planning my next dinner and I still have leftovers. Don't be like me and put off trying them, it's seriously worth it! Service was great too, I didn't wait more than a couple of minutes for my togo and it was still plenty hot when I got home.

Grace H.

Yelp
I just tried India Kutir for the first time and cannot recommend it enough. Great service and great food. The butter naan and chicken tikka masala were the best I've had. The rice was perfectly cooked, and the chicken samosa was so flavorful. I cannot wait to come back.

Yelp
This is a new Indian restaurant in the Longfellow neighborhood - opened around March 2023. Owned and run by a very hospitable man (Shih-mahn, not sure about the spelling). The food was super hot, clearly freshly cooked, and came within ten minutes of our order (we were there at 5 pm on a Saturday evening). Our Tandoori wings were tasty and not overly spicy, the vegetable samosa was fairly typical for the Twin Cities (in other words, a little dense and in a conical shape, as opposed to a pillow shape, which I prefer), the Lamb Coconut Curry was OK, and the Garlic Naan was delicious. Prices are quite reasonable ($42 for two of us for a full meal). It felt like a friendly place - we struck up a conversation both with the other group in the place, and with the owner/waiter. We plan to be back to try some of the other dishes, and to support this new business.

Yelp
India Kutir is located at 3621 E Lake Street. It is relatively newly opened. I tried this restaurant because it is closer than the place I regularly went to for Indian food. WOW! It was fabulous! India Kutir is now my new regular Indian carry out restaurant. I have tried lamb rogan josh and tandoori lamb. The rogan josh was a good medium-heat level. However, the tandoori lamb was a little milder spice than expected. Very good service, kind staff and good prices for the portions. One improvement could be to enable customers to choose the heat/spice level for their order.

Cyndi F.

Yelp
The second time at Indian Kutir was just as great as the first! I tried Keema Naan for the first time, which was delicious, along with the tandoori chicken tikka. So good! The service was super friendly again too!

RJ M.

Yelp
Staff is incredibly welcoming and kind, and the food has always been good. We have been a total of three times, and each has been a treat. It's a little hard to see from the street, but it's worth stopping in.

Yelp
This is my second visit to the restaurant, and the second time surpassed the first which I didn't feel was possible! The food and service is outstanding!!! The décor is simple, but it is exceptionally clean and well organized. Food service is very efficient and everything was served in a very acceptable pace. Another plus for me is that they don't charge the ridiculous service fees like other Minneapolis restaurants and they too don't charge a non-cash service charge. This is simply more incentive for me to leave a larger tip. The one thing I didn't like is that Yelp doesn't provide for rewarding establishments like India Kutir with a rating higher than a 5, as I feel they really deserve a "perfect 10"!!!! My recommendations would be the bread basket (combination of different naans), coconut curry dishes & palak paneer. Portions are more than adequate and on both visits I had sufficient leftovers for a second meal. I encourage you to try out this restaurant and I'm sure you will have a similar experience. I will definitely be back!!!!!! Sorry for all the !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but this place really deserves the praise!!!

Brent R.

Yelp
Food is superior! Amazing flavors across all of the dishes. Our new favorite Indian restaurant in Mn.

Paul S.

Yelp
I really love this place. Great biriyani!

Judy B.

Yelp
We ordered the Chicken Saag and the Chicken Tikka Masala to go and both dishes were fabulous! Great depth of flavor and so aromatic. We love this place!

Christa B.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to this place! The food was delicious and the menu had great options for everyone in our party of 5 (vegetarians and meat eaters). Even though the decor was simple, the atmosphere was very warm with a buzz of conversation at other tables and with the attentive and friendly staff. I live 3.5 hours north of Minneapolis, but this place will be on our list of restaurants to go to whenever we get to the Twin Cities.

David S.

Yelp
Longfellow neighborhood, you now have one of the best Indian restaurants around. In the biryani, i found a clove and cinnamon bark - this is made with whole spices. The rose lassi is craveworthy. So, too, was the coconut curry, and the best naan we've ever had. Even the green chutney - made from herbs grown by the owner in his garden - is exceptional. We'll be back soon and often.
