Quebec’s Struggling Sugar Shacks Devise Joint Takeout Initiative | Eater Montreal

"Offering pick-up at 196 outposts, Metro is serving as the urban collection point for boxed traditional sugar‑shack feasts, helping bring the rural experience to city residents and extending the reach of participating establishments—especially those in red zones still limited to takeout or delivery—so urbanites who previously would have travelled off‑island can access maple ham, fèves au lard, oreilles de crisse and other staples." - Valerie Silva

Google
Multiple issues, first with the prepared food - even after consuming it within 2 hours of purchasing. Second - purchased frozen food, when tried after preparing it, tasted bitter. Upon checking, turns out they sold me expired frozen food. They should have some quality control. The only reason I went there the second time was it’s near by my community.

Google
Huge indian grocery store with a lot of options. Fresh rotis and curries are available for pickup. Not much crowded, even on a Sunday afternoon.

Hari T.

Google
I had a very disappointing experience here. I was sold expired items, and what’s worse is that the expiration date on the bottle was deliberately scratched off and covered with stickers so it wouldn’t be visible. This is misleading and unacceptable. I recommend other customers double-check items before buying. I hope the management takes this issue seriously and improves their quality control.

Subir D.

Google
Possibly the best Indian store in the Bay Area. Spacious, organized and well maintained, the selection of items and brands would be better than most of the supermarkets in India. The vegetable and fruit section stocks fresh produce and a good selection. The chapati making machine is a big draw here with good quality chapatis rolling down a conveyor. Clean toilets are a welcome convenience. Definitely recommended!

Ramya M.

Google
They keep several expired pickles and opened buttermilk bottles in the counters. Despite being regular customers, they refuse to refund us the money for expired goods. A newly purchase rice bag had insects in it. They don't stick with posted price near the items. The rice bag was listed at 11$ at the store but I was billed 15$. They are overly priced as well. One small paneer slab costs 7$.

gehani G.

Google
I called to find out if they had a vegetable in stock and the price because I wanted to buy 8 pounds if the item. The lady on the phone told me they do have the item but can’t tell me the price. I asked to speak to a manager. She preceded to call the manager, told her the story in Hindi, came back on the phone with me and tilt me get manager is not available. I understand Hindi and I told her that. She then decided to hang up on me. Unless your doing something wrong it makes no sense to me why you would have you customers drive to you to find out a price. Shady!!!

Google
India Metro Hypermarket is a best Indian grocery store by far in san jose. They have a wide variety of products, including fresh mangoes of different variety. It's a great place to find authentic Indian food and groceries as well in a very reasonable rate.

Santosh P.

Google
This is the biggest, most spacious, organized Indian store in the area. Has a very good variety of products and brands that you won't find in every store. Prices are also reasonable. New, clean and specious store gives nice vibe while shopping. All the racks and filled with variety and options which are very well organised. Live food and snacks : Love the fact that they are making food right there in front of your eyes. Live making of Hot rotis best part to watch. I recommend its worth to visit store. Store is huge. Easy to walk in store. Lots of product.

Yelp
I wanted to try Mango Shrikhand, which is a strained yogurt which is thicker than Greek yogurt, almost as thick as cream cheese, and flavored with Mango puree/pulp and sweetened with sugar. They have quite a selection of other flavors like pistachio, rose water, pineapple, etc. Eaten with graham crackers, it would be like eating cheesecake. I also wanted to try Alwar ka Mawa, a caramelized cake/fudge made of milk, which they have in their kitchen display case right when you enter the store on the right

Yelp
This review is about the fresh food part of the store. Does not apply to the whole store. I have been buying fresh roti's for more than an year and have seen the quality and size decline. The weight of the 20 packs have almost halved over this time. The rotis have a bad smell many times as if it is prepared with bad flour. I used to recommend my friends to buy rotis from this store but now I myself don't like to buy it from them. Please bring back the quality and quantity of your rotis.

Yelp
India Metro Hypermarket opened in the vacant space next to Bevmo. Extra large store with the usual departments found in India markets. Aisles long, wide, signs note contents in aisles. Every items has up to 5 choices, mostly priced. Pick all that's needed. 3 cashier stations at check out. Wasn't jammed. Quick check out. Large parking lot. Buys: "Tea India" masala chai 80/6.99 -black tea with real ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, clove, cardamom. No artificial flavors/spices. -pretty strong. Milk can be added. As is fine with me. All in one mix (3.49) 14 oz -chickpeas, various nuts, raisins, fried flours of beans... -Daily value: 17% fat, sodium 11%, sugar 1%, protein 7 gm. Fibre 14%. Slightly spicy. Fat level high. Spicy punjabi mix (2.99) 10 oz -not tongue tingling as posted. flours, rice, nuts, spices. -DV: 30% fat, sodium 13%, fibre 12%, protein 7 gm, High fat, highest calorie count Masala moong dal: split mung bean (2.09) 7oz -fried mung bean with spices...slightly spicy -DV: fat 8%, sodium 10%, fibre 14%, protein 8gm Healthiest with lowest fat, sodium 4 stars: wide aisles, priced items, labeled aisles. Pricing on some items higher here...

Yelp
They have a lazy staff. They dont bag your items when you give them your bag and they don't put your stuff in the bag. And keep standing after billing and payment is done. I'd rather go to a store who provides better service! Cooked food from there is a hit or miss. I tried their vada pao, and the vada inside tasted stale and hard.

Kunal B.

Yelp
We ordered two boxes of Khaman/Dhokla (1 lb and 1/2 lb) around 6 o'clock in the evening from Doordash. When we opened them for dinner, we realized that the entire 1 lb box smelled spoiled. To confirm, we took a small bite, and it tasted as if it had already gone bad or had been prepared a day earlier. Ironically, the Dhokla from the 1/2 lb box was perfectly fine

Yelp
The good is they have a lot of items. Prices are decent. The Bad.. the stocking staffs are very rude. If you don't want to interfere with customers then try stocking before opening. The isle doesn't say what is in there. Maybe better signs to help customers find what they are looking for.

S S.

Yelp
their cashiers have the worst attitude . if they don't want to work or help the customer then they need to find something they like to do . girls always have AirPods in their ears and talking on the phone and not caring for customers stuff. I rather go to another Indian store than this . so pathetic

Supriya G.

Yelp
Product line is very good no doubt on that but, extremely rude and disrespectful staff at billing counter.

Yelp
This review is for their ready made food to go specifically the Dhai Vada. Grocery store is fine. I have probably ordered the Dhai(yogurt) Vada probably over 12 times. In the beginning, they were great and the best part was the thick greek yogurt. In the last month or so, things have changed. It is a hit or miss. More than 3 times now, I get watery, bland Dhai Vada. They water down the yogurt and it tastes terrible. Today was the worst and I had to write about this. I will not buy it anymore. I ordered the Khaman dhokla and the khandvi and they were terrible- dry and bland. Also the dhokla are made from flour not lentils. I also did not like their rotis- too dry and flavorless for my taste. The methi theplas were terrible- once again no flavor and they were so dry. I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt but I can't do it anymore. I am really upset today for the watered down, horrible Dhai vada.

Yelp
Went to check out this new market. They place was full on a Saturday morning. This Market has everything India most of the stuff I didn't know about??. All I was interested In finding was my rice for diabetic witch is sold in markets like this. My usual place Is a small store in Fremont. I was in luck they do have it. So I don't have to travel to Fremont. I give it 4 stars since parking can be a challenge. They share the plaza with A 24hr fitness center and beve mo. I really like this store and will be back to try Their snacks.
google avatar

Shalu S.

Yelp
Nothing hyper about this market. This review is from a very disappointed shopper. I did notice the tendency of Indian grocery store to push certain brand down your throat. In case of Indian metro hyper market, Chennai express Idli and Dosa batter. They fill the shelves with this brand. I took home a container and it was full fungus. I am not kidding. Stay away from this brand and hopefully the store will look into it
google avatar

Varuni R.

Yelp
This place is clean. In terms of food expiration they have few about to expire very soon. Much better quality compared to the other stores. Huge variety and unusual selection. Worth paying more money here. So far I have not gotten sick from the groceries here unlike other stores.
google avatar

RJ S.

Yelp
A very clean and spacious place to shop, excellent customer support and not to mention, their fresh roties and subjis! I always look forward to coming to this store!
google avatar

Angelia Y.

Yelp
The front door looks like a small market, they need more decorations haha, but inside is like whole foods Indian market, or Korean Mega market
google avatar

The Mountain A.

Yelp
Huge selection of Indian goods. One thing I noticed was there's some Indian goods I've never seen before and given the size of the store, it will take a while for me to check out everything else they have in stock. Today, I bought some Indian snacks as well as some wheat roti. The snacks I've had before so that part doesn't disappoint. As for the roti, I've never had roti that soft and fluffy before. It was awesome and not long after I got home, my family and I finished off the whole thing (we got 8 pieces of roti). I'll be going back to check out there other stuff
google avatar

Asha C.

Yelp
It's definitely overpriced !! I food at the snack counter is not tasty at all. They say it's freshly made but doesn't taste like it ! I like the veggies and lentils are fine but overpriced than the other store .

Ric B.

Yelp
6 small dhoklas for 6 dollars... but they did do a good job of filling the box with lot of coriander to hide the number or dhoklas

Sridevi C.

Yelp
Me and my husband went to the hyper market today and did lot of groceries shopping. Though it's neatly organized they are selling expired items. We unknowingly picked We realized that at the checkout counter. When we questioned the guy at the counter he is arguing and not accepting that fact .I would request everyone to check the expiry dates before buying
google avatar

N P.

Yelp
I'm surprised a place which just opened recently has products of such degraded quality . Had purchased chings hakka noodles packets from here . Both the packets had noodles which had fungus on it . Even the veges weren't fresh . Also find it overpriced compared to other stores around . The expiry was Dec '23

Preeti R.

Yelp
Unruly behavior and rude customer service by store manager. We ordered samosas, undiyu, paneer curry and rotis for dinner. Samosas were definitely not fresh. Oil was smelling bad. Undiyu was spoilt. When I called the store to notify so they can stop selling a spoilt batch, the owner brashly stated that Icannot tell him that they are selling spoilt food. He also told that he does not have the time to test every order they receive to check if the food is fresh or not. PS: We ordered 2 packs of rotis with 8 rotis in each pack based on what they stated. But when we opened the pack, we were short of a roti which in all fairness could have been a genuine miss. It is very irresponsible for store owners to sell spoilt food and not own up. At the end of the day, if you do not care for the food you serve to customers, why even start such a business?

Hemisha p.

Yelp
Great service. Things are well organized. Their rotis are also freshly made plenty of options for curry and it tastes great.

Ravi C.

Yelp
In the morning, I was going to bring the metro India hyper market grocery, at the time when I was bringing the grocery, I met some of my old friend, so the manager, the way he spoke was not good, his behavior was very bad. i was very disappointed to the store manager .
google avatar

Shameek C.

Yelp
They have good selection of vegetables and spices. Ample parking. Good clean place. Reasonable service.

Fnu A.

Yelp
Their prices are way too high compared to other Indian grocery stores such as Taj Mahal and India Bazar. I was buying 10LB zebra Sela rice, and the price was $19.99, which everyone grocery stores are selling it for $15.99. Also, they are selling other stuff with unreasonable price, like vegetables, sugars, fruits , etc.. I won't t recommend anyone to go to this place for groceries due to their unfair price and customer service.
google avatar

Darshana S.

Yelp
I got sugarcane juice taste is so bitter and manager so rude she never solve problems she us always right just making money and also very bed customer service left their on counter just donation to store
google avatar

Rohit A.

Yelp
Great place to shop for Indian food. Very organized and great variety of foods. Good parking

Pat I.

Yelp
Please don't get any food and chapati from the kitchen there. You needed to deal with a very cringy person at the counter, and the food quality was atrocious. We got Samosa, Vada Pav, Kadhai Panner and Spinach Chapati. The price is very high for the quantity and quality. I asked at the counter if the vada pav was fresh, and she said it was made fresh the same day, It was a lie. The dried bread and foul filling is obvious once you open it.

Irwinder S.

Yelp
Just got here. OMG this store is big but the price is very high compared to new india bazar everything is expensive in new india metro price are high then regular. I am shopping almost 15 years We have big family and I shops a lot on the india store. Only thing is big parking lot that's the big benefit they have other than that nothing. In new india bazar Only problem is parking they have small. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and with my personal experience this store is expensive I don't know how people shop here
google avatar

Simone S.

Yelp
Great new Indian store. Large selection of products at very reasonable prices. Staff is friendly and helpful. Store is clean and stocked.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
I didn't take any photos here, but they really did a great job stocking up with fresh produce, household items, and more. Friendly hardworking staff. Quick and convenient. Pretty spacious inside! There's a bakery to the right side, inside the grocery store. All popular Indian desserts and sweets are noticeable there. Breads looked delicious and good too. Pricing was decent. Squash was cheap. Very clean and organized, but not overly stocked. Beans, rice, frozen foods, fresh vegetables, curries, spices, sauces, soup bases, fruits, naans, etc. I saw some Chinese and Malaysian foods in the back refrigerators. Now, snacks....they have tons of candies and cookies! Snacks below $2.50 USD is considered very cheap in pricing. Some snacks were under $1.50. You can find a variety of goods here, no matter if you are vegetarian, vegan, on a gluten-free diet, or whatever the case might be. Specialty foods. Need personal care or bathroom items? They have plenty of items here. Inexpensive. I saw several brands of toothpastes, soaps, hair dyes, and more. Their shelves had them all, including kitchen items in the far left aisle. The only thing I didn't like was the very strong smell/aroma/odor that was very noticeable inside. Overall, great place to shop for Indian recipes and international items. Huge free public parking lot outside shared with BevMo and the gym. Plenty of space all around. Glad to welcome places like these in Milpitas. Diversity is great!
google avatar

Raj G.

Yelp
Clean, spacious and well organized. Relatively small produce section, but has the largest frozen section. Did not explore the kitchen and what it has to offer.

maitri v.

Yelp
Was really excited when saw the sign of this opening in the neighborhood. But every time I go there, it's usually disappointing and main reason is pricing. Yes, it's larger , cleaner compare to other Indian store in area but it's really not great pricing wise. Their kitchen is pathetic. They recently started 'Veg Thali' but it should be called 'Roti-Rice Thali' because those are main portions. They fill the largest sections of thali with roti & rice and two small sections with veg, daal. Really ? Went there today and in the name of veg they nothing menu was - Paneer butter masala, paneer malai, raja, dal makhani. And worse, their dal makhani wasn't even cooked. Did you even taste once before cooking?

Yelp
Today was the first time we went to this new India Metro Hypermarket. It was a good experience. just open three days ago but well organized Vegetables were Fresh not enough varieties. We bought korma, Aloo Gobi Sabji, Freshly made Roti (Free today), and Sugar Cane Juice. Sushila was the Cashier in the kitchen counter very pleasant person. Over all good experience for me. My wife said, she liked it but prefer New India Bazar as there was some difference in the categories of food. I am sure they will add more varieties as the time goes and they learn about the local needs.

All F.

Yelp
Positives: You can find almost all Indian items you need. Fresh vegetables, Cooked food, utensils, pooja items. It's Clean. Prices are displayed for almost every item. Ample parking. Negative: a lot expensive than New India bazar which is not too far from it.

Dee T.

Yelp
I liked how clean and big it is. The vegetables are so fresh. Hope they will maintain the quality. The customer service was also good.

Praveen K.

Yelp
Do not buy cakes here. They are super expensive, and the taste is not great. I purchased one 8-inch gulab jamun flavor cake for $45+tax. They told me it was made the same day but didn't taste fresh. And the next day, it got fungus, and we had to throw it away.

Raman K.

Yelp
Recently bought food from this place. Simple yellow Dal tadka was a mess and they have put so much salt that we have to throw it away. I dont want blame this shop for the mediocrity but its our community which has lower expectation and accepts low standard/quality food.

Srikalyan C.

Yelp
I wish I could give 0 stars - the attitude of the store service manager was extremely rude. The samosas they serve smelled very bad oil outside and stale inside. When complained about this, forget about acknowledging it and returning the money - the manager says "Can we taste every food that we serve here ?" Never going back here. I would probably complain to a food inspector.

Sirisha T.

Yelp
Wish I could give a zero stars to the food stall, for the spoiled food, bad customer service and zero hygiene where straw was getting picked up from the trash bin to serve with sugarcane juice.
