Shockingly good Indian food in...wait, Kentucky? What?
Yep. I was very skeptical of all the rave reviews. It's like seeing a five-star two-hundred review French joint in Siberia. Ethnic restaurants around here notoriously pull punches to pander to the bland, deep-fried tastes of McAmerica. But not India Oven.
If they say it's spicy, it's spicy. The sauces are rich, not "tomato soupy" but full of discernible vegetables, herbs and generous spices, served as they should be in simmering dishes, family style. The kofta is perfect in texture, in a subtly sweet sauce. The lamb curry, ordered "India Hot" was beautifully flavored and not overcooked...even the chicken breast in the Jungle Kabob was still succulent, almost unheard-of from a tandoor. They take care of their proteins, which warms my little sous cheffy heart almost as much as the curry!
Just delicious! So why the missing star? The dining room was disastrously dirty, piles of dishes on nearly every table, and the staff seemed overwhelmed to the point of having no time left for their customers.
Probably not their fault; this place was crazy busy...and I'll tell you one thing: with flavors like this in an otherwise pretty tasteless place, I'll certainly be back to let them try for a full five stars (like that means anything, really). Highly recommended!
