Best Indian Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Hot on the delivery circuit and equally popular during lunch and dinner hours. Hillcrest’s India Palace serves quality versions of dishes found on many Indian menus like tikka masala, biryanis, channa masala, aloo gobi and more." - Grace Cassidy

Great service great food and great ambiance. Good size shrimp in the shrimp dish. The chicken was nice and tender, and the garlic naan bread was delicious. A very nice portion of rice to go with everything was a nice touch. They also have a separate group dining area that seats about 60 people. My only complaint is no longer do they do buffet style.

Google
I recently was craving Indian food and since moving to San Diego, I Had not tried any Indian food spots. I am so happy this was my first experience because I Was so satisfied with the overall experience and the food. I absolutely love Indian food, and this was the freshest most authentic Indian food I’ve ever tried. The ambience is so cute. There’s even a water feature that makes it very luxurious, but peaceful at the same time. This restaurant is so unique And I will definitely be taking my entire family there when they come to visit me. The staff was extremely kind, so nice and helped me through the menu. Definitely recommend butter chicken, and the cauliflower appetizer and their chai tea is made in house the right way. I’m literally eating my leftovers as I’m writing this review.

Food was delightful. Surface was great. We were disappointed initially that they are not offering the buffet lunch menu anymore. However, we were able to order items that we know we liked and we were not disappointed. There’s a garlic cheese naan that I haven’t seen on other.Menus. We loved the taste. We ordered two main dishes, raita and two breads. Definitely too much for two people next time we would just get one of the entrées.

India Palace in Hillcrest is an absolute gem for Indian cuisine lovers! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a cozy ambiance that set the perfect tone for an amazing dining experience. The food? Simply outstanding. We ordered a variety of vegetarian dishes, and each one was bursting with rich flavors and perfectly balanced spices. The naan was soft, warm, and slightly charred—just the way it should be. The rice was fragrant and fluffy, a perfect complement to the hearty curries. The vegetable curry had an incredible depth of flavor, and the paneer dish was creamy, comforting, and downright delicious. The pickled sides added an extra zing, making every bite even more exciting. Service was impeccable—our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and happy to offer recommendations. The portions were generous, and every dish felt like it was made with care. If you’re looking for authentic, flavorful Indian food in San Diego, India Palace is the place to be. Whether you're a spice enthusiast or prefer milder flavors, their menu has something for everyone. Can’t wait to come back and try more!

My friends and I enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. Some of the food (I wish I had pictures) that I ordered was a first time try for my friends and they were surprised. I plan to visit again and take more of my friends here.

Google
fine dining and budget-friendly! The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was impressively quick and authentically Indian. We ordered the Vegetable Curry, Paneer Tikka Masala, and Chilli Paneer – all of which were flavorful and satisfying. Ambience had rich Indian elements.

Google
After a very long found some authentic Indian food here at India palace. Aloo tikki was so crispy on the outside and soft inside, aloo paratha was soft and Reshami kebab was so flavorful… must try. Can’t wait to go back. A little pricey but worth it. Street parking is little hard to find.

Google
India Palace in San Diego is a gem for authentic Indian cuisine. The food is flavorful and well-prepared, with highlights like butter chicken and freshly baked naan. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is attentive. It's a great spot for anyone looking to enjoy quality Indian dishes.

Yelp
Best Indian spot in Hillcrest, hands down! I ordered the chicken tikka masala and butter chicken. I enjoyed both but my favorite was the chicken tikka masala. I ordered mild/medium and didn't find it to be spicy at all. Next time I may have to go up a step. I also got the garlic naan which was great! Service is friendly and relatively quick. The restaurant is very nice as well as the patio. I highly recommend India Palace!

Yelp
A tough day! GPS wanted us to drive through the hospital on a road than no longer existed. Lots of traffic. So we decided to stop and eat a late lunch. Someone pulled out of a parking space directly in front of us! Perfect. And that was the kind of "it-all-fit" experience we had. The food was exceptionally good. Tried green peas and mushrooms and enjoyed. Naan with cheese and garlic was yummy. We also had chicken strips that were fully of chicken, not breading! All the food was tasty and lovely. A quiet relaxing atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our food and get rid of the stress of traffic. Good value with moderate pricing. Quick service with pleasant servers. I would definitely go back... if we lived in San Diego instead of Los Angeles!

Yelp
Good food Great Service Amazing Ambiance This restaurant still on 5th Ave its a little Pricy for what you get .

Yelp
Outdoor seating, really enjoyed the saag paneer, wasn't a big fan of their fish pakora (dry, overcooked).
google avatar

Andreas P.

Yelp
Amazing spot with delicious food. The garlic naan is chewy and delicious. Definitely pair with papadum, the crunch.... If you're looking for a non meat dish get mushroom mattar makhani. It's a deep red sauce with mushrooms and peas, for nice spice get mild. They are extremely consistent. We get takeout here weekly and it's always hot and delicious.

Yelp
My dining experience at India Palace was a mix of delights and minor hiccups. The staff's warmth was evident as they guided us through the menu, and the cozy yet stylish interior, coupled with vibrant pop Indian music, created an inviting atmosphere. The Chicken Tikka Masala, Aloo Mattar, and Saag Paneer were flavorful and satisfying. However, the one downside was the assumption about my spice preference, leading to all dishes being served on the milder side, even though I asked for medium hot. Despite this, the overall experience was enjoyable, and the staff's attentiveness added a personal touch to the dining adventure.

Yelp
The food is extremely good, service was great but the ambiance was beautiful and clean. Must try the biryanis. Well decorated place to enjoy. Esp dating place.

Yelp
A local gem! I went to this spot when I first moved to SD. They have some of the best curry I've had. Their lamb is also cooked to perfection! I recently went back and had a great date night. Highly recommend the fish korma & lamb curry. Can't go wrong with the garlic naan too. Great staff & and nice atmosphere!

Yelp
What an amazing dinner! My first time dining at India Palace! Everyone was pretty attentive and superb customer service! We started with the Gobi (Kobe) 65 which was a cauliflower pakora! The cauliflower was lightly breaded with tangy tomato vinaigrette sauce and very much flavorful!! We also tried the bread pakoras that came with two sauces. Both appetizers were very delicious and very much shareable!!!! Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Hariyali and Rogan Josh (Lamb) were our picks for the main entrees. All dishes provided a wide variety of flavors with mild spice levels. My personal favorite was the Chicken Hariyali which I never tried before! Not to mention the delicious naan and rice! All the dishes complemented each other, each had their own personality. Mango lassi completed the entire meal with a sweet finish. The restaurant itself was very clean and well decorated with traditional and contemporary finished and touches! I can't wait to go back and try more new dishes!!!

Yelp
I've had some bites here before, but this was my first time having a full meal. We just decided to do a girls' night and I was first to arrive. It was pretty empty and I didn't even know who else was supposed to be here, so I just waited outside LOL. I noticed that they have a painting of Drake on the wall, which doesn't seem to match the waterfall entrance/decor. After everyone arrived, we were seated and browsed through the menu. We decided to just order a bunch of items and share everything. I had to have my mango lassi, which was thick and very refreshing. For food, we got the chicken tikka masala, 2 garlic naan, mango chutney, papadum, shrimp vindaloo, roti, lamb goat curry, butter chicken, and chicken hariyali. Everything came out pretty quickly in these small bowls, but they were surprisingly filling! The papadum was very interesting- they were crunchy lentil crackers that came with two dipping sauces. The roti was okay, but I thought that the food overall was enjoyable and very flavorful.

Yelp
Consistently good! The only Indian restaurant I order from in San Diego! Prices have gone up but the quantity (at least for takeout) is a good value.
google avatar

Rajjin N.

Yelp
Returning for the second time, I started with fish pakora and chicken 65. While the chicken 65 was amazing, the fish pakora lacked fish and was mainly breading. However, the mains--chicken kebab, lamb kebab, saag, chicken curry, biryani, and garlic naan--were all outstanding. The ambiance with Kobe artwork was lovely, and the waiter was very sweet. I'd definitely go back for more! Gotta try the mango lassi tho.

Yelp
SoCal Tasting embarked on a culinary journey at India Palace, San Diego! We tried Mambarita cocktail and Soni Lagdi Cocktail to Reshmi Kebab, Malai Kofta, Chili Paneer, and Mushroom Matar Makhani, every bite was a celebration. Amazing drinks, delicious food, great ambiance and super friendly host and staff. Must visit for Indian food lovers

Yelp
This place is a great place to enjoy North Indian cuisine. The atmosphere is wonderful, laid back, and relaxed. Food is great. You can order the level of spice you like. On weekdays they have a buffet with lots to choose from. Staff is friendly and very attentive. Been here a few times and would totally recommend this joint!
google avatar

Yelp
One of my neighborhood go-to places for Indian togo. The lamb korma is my usual order with garlic naan. Yesterday my friend tried the chicken vindaloo and enjoyed it. He had requested a spicier version, but it was mild like mine which was a little disappointing. The flavors were still delish.
google avatar

Donna N.

Yelp
I door dashed this place and I'm soooo happy with my food. Chicken tikka and saag paneer were some of the best I've ever had. Fast delivery and will def be back!

Yelp
Wow, what a spectacularly cool Indian restaurant! We're big fans of the cuisine and have been in many Indian restaurants over the years, but this is by far the neatest interior I've ever seen. Really unique and fun decor, awesome water feature, and romantic lighting all around. We had the chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, chicken korma, and both the garlic naan and garlic cheese naan, with rice and mango lassis. All very good! The mild spice level on the korma was perfect for me, even has a tiny bit of heat to it still at that lowest spice level. The chicken is all white meat, and I like how the pieces are smaller than the big chunks of chicken you typically see in Indian dishes. The service was also excellent. We were the only seated customers for half of the time we were there; they had lots of takeout orders though. Some people trickled in as we were eating so it got a little busier around 8/8:30. I'd love to come back here when we're in town again!

Yelp
My FAVORITE place to go when I'm in Hillcrest. My husband and I absolutely love this restaurant. The food is amazing every time we visit. We've tried almost everything on the menu and have loved it all. This is a great date night spot and perfect for family outings as well. The ambiance is great we love the way the place is decorated, good vibes! The service is A++, they are always kind, welcoming, and very attentive.

Jason P.

Yelp
Try their lamb, anything with their lamb is amazing. I also recommend sampling all of their naans, so many to choose from. I ordered takeout and they packed each container to the brim.

Yelp
Whoa!! Let me just tell you about this place. So my two sisters and I were kind of skeptical about this place because we have NEVER tried Indian food before in our lives. We are ghetto fab...we eat what we are used to and love it. So from the moment we walked in this place it was a whole vibe!! We started looking around after sat down and my sister said "Is that Drake" and sure enough there was a painting of Drake and we started looking around more and I said " is that Kobe" Man come to find out the son of the hostess painted these paintings. These pics were really good. Ok so ordered a bunch of stuff that I cannot remember you guys but everything we ordered was phenomenal. They give you yogurt on the side if you dishes and trust me I was skeptical but the food can be a little on the spicy side and when you add yogurt it makes it less spicy and it taste so good with it. Honestly I was surprised with how amazing this was. And the prices were reasonable and worth it. For 3 people I spent around 90 bucks and we ate like Queens!!! So I will be coming back to this amazing magical place.

Glenn M.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Even better food - they have some unique dishes you don't find elsewhere. Device is friendly and good.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Came here a few days ago and ordered their mango chicken tikka masala and paneer tikka masala with a side of garlic naan and the dishes came with basmati rice. I think this was probably the best Indian food we've ever tried and the servings were really large and definitely worth the price. Our service was also very fast and efficient and the interior of the restaurant is so pretty. Already planning on coming back and looking forward to trying new menu items!
google avatar

Yelp
We've been coming here consistently for about a year. The decor is beautiful-the chandeliers, textiles, and artwork all give it a unique flair. The music and music videos never disappoint. The food is always delicious and well presented and I always have leftovers. The service from Vishal is exceptional, he even double checks to clarify what we want and makes sure we aren't forgetting elements we like. All of the male employees are super polite and welcoming.
google avatar

Luis R P.

Yelp
Great food and awesome ambiance. I love the punjabi music and videos. Their decor is very nice with the statues and the waterfall. Their food can be ordered spicy or not spicy, depending on your taste. Good list of wines and full bar. I wish they had wines from India. They had just one beer from India (Kingfisher, sold under the Taj Beer name).
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
So good. Very nice sized portions. Fun and colorful atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Food was flavorful. Nice and hot. Staff was friendly. Food arrived fast. I love the ambiance of the place. Will eat here again next time I am in the area.

Yelp
My paneer Tikka masala was good. I ordered it at a spicy level and I thought it would be a bit spicier but was ok. The garlic naan bread was good. Better than some places but not the best I've had but was better than average. I don't eat chicken but the sauce that the butter chicken was in was pretty good. Service was good. Portions were ok for an Indian place but smaller than most restaurants overall.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent Indian spot in Hillcrest. I was craving some curry and decided to stop in. The food is a bit on the pricey side, but the service is good and the ambiance is very nice. I got the choose your own combo and went with the Lamb Vindaloo. I got it "extra spicy", and the waiter asked me if I was sure After the main dish, some veggie samosas, which were a little cold on the inside and some garlic naan, I was set back over $30, but everything tasted good. Parking was a challenge as it always is in Hillcrest so plan accordingly.

Yelp
Food, Service and Ambiance are all very pleasant. Owner and staff are very cordial. Food tastes awesome. Portion sizes are also very great.

Yelp
These folks are absolutely crushing it! Just moved to the area and we were ready to enjoy a night out. We actually intended to go to the Mexican place next door but when we got there and realized they blast club music we quickly looked for an alternative and found India Palace. Service: Attentive and quick. We didn't want for anything and were well taken care of. Could perhaps have been a bit more welcoming/warmer but this could also just be a california thing. Food: high quality, loaded with flavor, and cooked to perfection. This place should be very proud of their food and it shows. Samosas, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, and roti are all 10/10. Ambiance: Authentic & creative. We loved the murals of drake and kobe. Also, their menus are incredible! Chairs are very comfortable and the place is very clean. Kudos to these folks for providing such an awesome dining experience. It seems like they've figured out how to thrive when a lot of other restaurants are failing.

Yelp
The Indian cuisine here is among the best that I have ever had! The dishes are prepared with superior ingredients, and it shows. I tried a variety of menu items in order to sample some of the more traditional Indian fare offered at this restaurant. The Chicken Tika Masala was savory and full of butter. It was the tastiest tikka masala that I've ever experienced. Also, the Garlic Naan was next level! It was soft and doughy, the way that it should be... Dipping the naan into the tikka masala will take you to another world where you won't want to come back! The Lamb Curry was a flavorful combination of finely chopped vegetables in a tangy tomato vinaigrette. Only a few spoons of this luscious stew is necessary to make you feel full and satisfied, because it is so rich. The Raita was a yogurt cucumber rice pudding that is served cold with cardamom. When paired with the rice, it compliments the acid in the spicy dishes with the base in the Raita. I ordered a few sides, namely the Vegetable Samosas and Onion Bhaji. They tasted great with green chutney and plum sauce. The bahji was like onion rings on steroids! After trying this side, you'll never order onion rings again. This was the real deal... The only reason why I gave them four stars instead of five stars was due to the lack of care with the packaging. The cardboard egg crate-like packaging for the sides were not even closed. Also, this packaging got soggy and completely collapsed in the bag. On a positive note, they wrapped everything in Saran Wrap to make sure that it remained piping hot upon pickup. I would definitely recommend India Palace for an elevated Indian food experience!
google avatar

Caroline Z.

Yelp
Vegetable Samosas, Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan Okay, the veggie samosas were awesome and flavorful and the chutneys were great. The garlic Naan was just alright. The butter chicken was just somehow lacking in flavor; it was tender ish but sort of bland. The interior of this place is absolutely beautiful. I would totally come here again and just sit and eat samosas.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. Never dined in, always take out but let me tell you that doesn't mean a thing when the food is this good. Always get the chicken tikka masala with garlic naan, amazing every time. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
Beautiful waterfall inside the restaurant as you walk inside. Food quality is a 10/10! I recommend getting the garlic naan, it's great to dip into the curry dishes. I would come back here again
google avatar

Quita M.

Yelp
Amazing customer service I must say. She was busy doing do many things, but it never felt like she left and she was very attentive, genuine and exceptional. If I'm not mistaken she was the owner. And on a Friday night! No pressure. I will be returning as often as I'm able. The food was amazing I don't know what it was called but it was what was recommended to a new comer like. I was very pleased and pleasantly surprised it made a perfect night out with my sisters. The vibe was light and full of love very memorable. I give this restaurant 5

Yelp
Went there with my brother and his wife and absolutely loved it! Great service, delectable food, and wonderful presentation. We were able to people watch from the outer part of the dining area outside. Loved the cauliflower and fish pakoras, and the ground lamb and mango lassi. No complaints whatsoever and for sure will bring others to this place as they visit San Diego.
google avatar

Miranda D.

Yelp
This would undoubtedly be my death row meal. Specifically, their vegetable samosas, paneer pakora, chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. The chutneys are SOO good (especially the green one). The seasoning on the outside of the samosas is unbelievable. The chicken tikka masala is absolutely perfect. This is the best Indian food I've had in San Diego by far. I couldn't recommend it enough. Apologies there are no photos - I simply had to dig in immediately. The interior is decorated super cool too. Love this place SOO much.
google avatar

Wade Lawrence H.

Yelp
This was a gem of a find. The food was "a level above" and the flavors were amazing. The environment was worth experiencing and a must see. This is a gem if you like Indian food (and probably a great start if you haven't had it before!
google avatar

Finn W.

Yelp
There is a water feature coming from the ceiling which is cool and there is always an Indian music video playing. Food was great and the art in the walls and on the menu was awesome. Get the Garlic cheese naan you won't regret it. I would give this place a 5 but there was a fly in my water.
google avatar

Jasmine K.

Yelp
I'm pretty picky when it comes to Indian food but everything that came out was absolutely 10/10! The malai kofta was beautifully done and the koftas were soft and a great size! The paneer tikka masala had the softest paneer in small chunks and had great color to it. The chilly paneer - I was obsessed!!! Mango lassi was delicious - i ended up drinking the whole thing before the entrees came out. Even the samosas rank high on my list of best samosas ! Service was wonderful, it's a cool ambiance and I would totally come back again!
google avatar

Raman C.

Yelp
The hardest part in San Diego is to find easy parking for a good restaurant. But thats not a problem here. They do have easy parking spots available. Food wise they were one of the best out of many other Indian restaurants nearby. The food came out fresh and taste and flavour was perfect. The service was fast and the staff were kind and helpful. Now talking about the Ambiance, its just done best for a Indian restaurant. They have a smooth water fountain all the way till the ceiling and those big hand painted pictures of celebrities looked awesome. They also have a big room in the back for small gatherings and parties. And the room is very well decorated. A must try place for Indian Food Lovers.
google avatar

Johanna B.

Yelp
Really cool ambience there's an inside little waterfall and wall murals of different celebrities in dhoti or traditional Indian clothing! The lights are dim and different colors which sets a nice mood! The food was really good we particularly enjoyed the lamb saag and chicken tikki masala! The veggie samosas were also super good and the mango lassi was so creamy and delicious! The serving size was so big and the prices were not bad at all! I took home the leftovers and had 2 more meals! service was kind and hospitable!
google avatar

Bridget M.

Yelp
Went with the British Curry Club on Valentines Day! Traffic was horrendous. Upon arrival to the restaurant, we were greeted right away and taken to our table. I ordered appetisers of samosa, onion bhaji, pappads, main course I had the chicken Makhani (butter chicken). I loved all of it! It is quite possibly the best Indian food I've had in San Diego! There were about 20 of us and everyone in our group appeared to enjoy the food. The service and ambiance were also top notch! I was having so much fun with friends, I forgot to take any pictures of the food!
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
This is our favorite Indian restaurant in San Diego! Come here very couple of months and the food is amazing every time!
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
Tried delivery from this Hillcrest Indian spot, but it was not the best experience. Main courses are fairly pricey, around $23-25, and unlike many competitors, there is no option to choose naan as an included side dish instead of rice. I ordered pakora and garlic naan while my companion selected lamb karahi and lamb korma. The pakora breading was tough and too thick. 80% of the "vegetable" was potato, whereas I would have expected a better variety including onion, more cauliflower, carrot, etc. I could have overlooked much of this if the tamarind dipping sauce was on point, but unfortunately it was bland and too watery. So could the garlic naan save the day? Alas! While it looked and smelled appealing, the naan was much greasier than expected so I didn't enjoy it. My companion said that the lamb dishes were OK so unfortunately will have to look elsewhere for our next Indian meal.

Yelp
A great place to get delicious Indian cuisine! The place has great ambiance with soaring ceilings, intricate and fancy lighting, comfortable seating, Indian cultural decor. We ordered 1) tandoori fish 2) chicken tikka masala 3) garlic naan bread. The tandoori fish was perfectly cooked on a bed of onions and bell peppers. The spice level was perfect and the dish came out steaming hot and full of flavor. The chicken masala was creamy, decadent and had the perfect balance of spices. It went perfectly with both the basmati rice and garlic naan (which was chewy and had the perfect char from the oven). The service was prompt and friendly and the restaurant is super clean and well maintained with hand sanitizer at each table. There is metered street parking (free on sundays and holidays).

Yelp
Fantastic Indian food every time, elegant ambience, warm-friendly service. Love India Palace!
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I loved that there were so many vegetarian options, and their samosas are so good!! I had the aloo tikka masala and my friend ordered the mango chicken. Flavor was on point and prices were fair. Seems like the staff work together to serve the tables because we had at least 3 different people check on our table, but they work seamlessly. The service was friendly and well timed, meaning our water was always full and our conversation wasn't constantly interrupted. I love the decor here. There are some gorgeous classic touches mixed with modern themes like there's an image of Drake wearing Indian fashion. You can see from my photos that the lighting is interesting, great for ambiance but not as great for photos. I will definitely be visiting again to try out their other vegetarian dishes!

Erin D.

Yelp
Food is fantastic, service friendly and prompt, and the decor is interesting and fun to dine in.
