The 10 Best Indian Restaurants In Philadelphia

"The menu at Headhouse Square's Indian Kitchen Lovash is long–we’re talking Samuel L. Jackson’s filmography long–so it truly has something for everyone. Bring a group of friends here and pass around lavash wraps packed with ground lamb and bits of green pepper, paneer tikka masala drenched in a mint sauce, or spicy potatoes coated in a tamarind chutney. This casual BYOB is rarely packed, so it can be your go-to for a spur-of-the-moment dinner with fragrant biryani, rich curries, and golden butter chicken drumsticks as big as a toy baseball bat.  " - candis mclean

Google
If I could give this place six stars I would Indian Lovash Kitchen absolutely blew me away the food was so good I genuinely had to pause and appreciate every bite everything was full of flavor and cooked perfectly it tasted like someone’s grandma was in the kitchen making sure you left full and happy the waitress was super kind and polite and made us feel so welcome like we were regulars even though it was our first time the service was on point and the food was beyond worth the price honestly it felt like a steal I would have paid more and still left grinning highly recommend this spot to anyone who loves Indian food or just wants a great meal and a good time this place is a hidden gem and I will definitely be back because that tikka masala was disrespectfully good!!!!!

This place was absolutely amazing. Ordered the Saag Paneer and Mushroom Vindaloo plus a Chai and a Mango Lassi. There wasn't one thing we ordered here that didn't leave us impressed. Service was also extremely good and the ambience was very nice inside. I wish I had found this place near where I live instead of while traveling!

Google
Its was my first time here and I ordered the rack of lamb chops and, man where they delicious, and the sauce was like J.J.Walker from (Good Times ) they where dynamite (as well as). Young man with great ambition and hospitality from start to finish. On South st 236 Philadelphia pa. I will definitely come back to eat and try something else. Everything that I gave five stars - its was true. A South Philadelphia man speaks

Google
FANTASTIC! I have been coming here for decades. My friend Mohan is the owner and is always very nice. The restaurant is very clean. Bathrooms are spotless. The food is fantastic and if you love Indian food without all of the heat, like me, just ask for your food to be prepared "Mild". I have never had a problem here and the waitstaff is knowledgeable. If you want a very friendly environment that is always on their game, please come! Thanks always Mohan! ~Daniel and Yeremiah Pictures: Samosa, Raita, Kashmiri Naan, Vegetable Korma, Chicken Masala.

Google
Had a lovely birthday lunch earlier today with my parents! I got the chicken vindaloo as spicy as they were willing to build it!! 😜 My parents don't do as well with spice but they also dug there food. I like interior especially the red colored walls! Definitely recommend if you're on South Street and craving Indian food! Solid spot!

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with smiles and hospitality. Not only did the food come out quickly, it exceeded all of our expectations. The restaurant is family friendly and overall an amazing place to go. Thank you!

Yelp
this place was SO good!!!! the food was AMAZING! (and very well priced and portioned!) the chicken literally fell apart it was stewed so tender..... so flavorful and delicious sheesh. the ambiance was chill and nice, staff was VERY kind and attentive -- there were not as many people there as there should be!!!!!!!!!!!! MUST TRY (and will go back again)!!

Yelp
Small restaurant and the food was not good. I got food poisoning from eating here and while waiting for food I did notice the cook coughing a lot. He was not wearing a mask. The menu online is different from what you see in person. Again, I would not recommend this place due to poor food quality, taste, and business conditions.

Yelp
I WAS SERVED CRAB SAMOSA WHEN I ORDERED A VEG SAMOSA. so on 11 October, 2024 at around 6:00 pm we visited this restaurant and ordered food ( everything ordered was pure vegetarian ) the first thing in the order we received was the vegetable samosa and to our surprise we were served a CRAB samosa. Here is the video: https://bit.ly/CrabSamosa You can watch the response of the manager when confronted about this behaviour. He literally says they both look the same so the mistake happened and I am very angry and I honestly do not recommend anyone going to this restaurant. I am also raising the complaint with the City of Philadelphia regarding this. Such negligence is not at all acceptable and severe action must be taken against them.

Yelp
reasonable prices, lovely staff, tasty food. This is not a super formal, multi course, date night establishment but this IS a phenomenal (seems to be family run?) authentic Indian restaurant where they will treat you well and feed you even better. No reservation needed, classic menu. I'm not from Philly but if I were, this would be in my regular rotation. Comparable to my favorite Indian places in New York.

Yelp
Lovash is one of our go to's for Indian takeout/delivery. As someone who loves Indian but has a dairy allergy, I love that I can get vegan saag here and the tofu vegan saag tastes just like saag paneer to me...winning! The husband really likes their chicken tikka masala or lamb vindaloo. It's quick, inexpensive and high quality, plus portions are most definitely sufficient. Recommended, especially for those with dietary restrictions.

Yelp
Finally got extra spicy and I'm in love! SO GOOD! Last few times I ordered it wasn't spicy and I was very upset. This time, perfection. Will order more.

Yelp
Great delicious food at very reasonable prices. Has decent seating ambience for about 30 inside and a couple of people outside. Service very quick and has live kitchen counter for those who are interested to see how Indian food is cooked. Great joint if you are passing by south street.

Yelp
we were walking down south street last week and i could smell good indian food in the air (i can tell), saw this place right across the street. we had unfortunately just eaten but knew we'd be back to try it out. got there this past weekend and i'm so happy we thought to come back it was a great experience. we were sat immediately, our server was very nice and attentive. we started with samosas and they were much bigger than i expected! i've had a lot of samosas in my day and these were definitely top 4, very solid and would definitely order them again. for the main dish i had rajma aloo for the first time and it was fantastic, if i didn't want to try more of their other dishes so bad i would come back for it OFTEN. my fiancée got the chicken saag and thoroughly enjoyed hers as well. the only thing i wasn't a huge fan of was the bread we chose spinach parantha, it was alright and served it's purpose as a vessel for our food but i'm definitely trying their regular naan next time we go. they also have a bathroom for customers that is very confusing to find but i'm just happy they had one, most places don't and our waitress was happy to direct me to it. i also got a coupon for checking in on yelp this time so shout out to yelp for that :)

Yelp
This restaurant is easy to miss if you're meandering down South Street. Neatly tucked away between 3rd South and 2nd South Indian Kitchen has a small footprint. Walking aside I'll admit the seating layout left much to be desired but the Chicken Tikka Masala I ordered was incredibly tender. The flavor profile was decent but the only reason this restaurant didn't warrant 5 stars was the service. My server wasn't attentive in the least and one of the line cooks(who's name I can't remember) more than filled in the gap. Still it was precarious sight seeing something have to jumó off the line to check on you/serve your food. A solid meal but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. In a city packed with stellar Indian cuisine I would recommend looking elsewhere for a premier dining experience.

Yelp
Been here a few times. Love the jalfrezi & Rogan Josh curries. So good. Just tried their south indian additions. Will definitely be back to try the new curries and dosas. Way better than other south indian places in the city

Yelp
We recently used Lovash to cater a celebratory dinner for about 15 graduate students here in our home, several blocks from the restaurant. What a success! Everything was delicious and the attention to detail was exceptional. Chef Mohan helped us create a menu to meet the expectations of the guest of honor and then he personally supervised the on-time delivery of the food and help us set it up. Quantities were generous and the cost entirely reasonable. We thought we would have left-overs for the next day, but once we suggested that our guests take a bit of the food home, they eagerly packaged up everything. We've always known that the restaurant was good, but this catering experience added a new dimension.

Yelp
update. this is my fave indian spot in all of philly. my picture sucks tbh but the service is amazing & the food is great. i have to beg them to make my tikka spicy but otherwise loveeee it! i know this is important to some: the bathroom is not accessible to some disabled people. it's on the second floor and there's no elevator.

Yelp
My wife and I traveled to Philly this weekend from NYC. We went to Indian Kitchen Lovash, excited and looking forward to the food, because this place generally has overall good reviews. We ordered the mixed appetizer, the chicken biryani, the butter naan, chicken naan and butter chicken. The appetizers were ok for the most part, but they were not served as hot as they should of been for freshly made appetizers. The main dishes were a major disappointment. Overall the food was lacking flavor and the butter chicken was overly sweet for some reason. We were disappointed with this place.

Yelp
This is my first time at this restaurant and I really enjoyed it! The vibe is great and the staff members are so helpful. I would like to say first that the meal portions are huge, so expect delicious leftovers. We opted for vegetarian dishes today and they definitely did not disappoint. We got the garlic naan which was to die for, it was very fresh and thin which I love. First time trying the Saag with paneer and it did not disappoint. But I have to say one of my favorites was the vegetarian samosa and mixed vegetables biryani, it was beyond flavorable and I would come back for just those!! Highly recommend this place for the vibrant environment and great food

Yelp
A family tradition! Growing up as kids in Philly we were introduced to Lovash, and Mohan's amazing staff. 20 years later they have become defacto family. We are guaranteed a great night and a great meal from people that care, when we visit Lovash. Having this Indian staple in our city will always be a point of pride. If it's your first time, you're in for a treat. Mmm...now I want some cheesy Naan .

John S.

Yelp
I'm a Philadelphia local, originally from London, and I love curry. Lovash is very, very good. Highly recommend!

Yelp
So I travel often and dine out frequently. As a business owner I myself I make certain that I practice fair reviews when rating a business. The food at Indian Lovash Kitchen was great and flavorful. The presentation was also awesome when our meals arrived. My three-star rating is based on the customer service we received while dining. There was a huge party in the rear of the restaurant and two other parties of two. Midway into our meal, a party entered the restaurant. The manager came over and said I have a party for your table they had reservations. We continued to eat as another plate arrived from the items we ordered. My issue is why would you sit us at a table you had booked. There was also know reserved sign placed on the table we were sat. He continued to come over and make us completely uncomfortable during our meal. In closing, a great management staff who was respectful of all of their quest would have handled this issue differently. I also wonder if we would have been treated differently if we were white men and not a black and latino man. I ask this question because there were two white men dining at the table near the front window who were never asked if they were done. Instead, he stood by our table harassing and asking are we done yet. If this is something that is common at this j

Yelp
I may be biased as I've been coming to this spot for 20 years at the ripe age of 29, but lovash is special. I threw a large byob dinner here for 25 people, and it was incredible! This place is super charming, the staff was incredible, and the table was set beautifully with papadum when we arrived. All of the food was delicious and a fair prix fixe price point - all of my guests were raving about the chicken tikka, the chana masala, the vindaloo, the matar paneer. I will 100% return for a large group byob!

Dagny C.

Yelp
I had an excellent meal here. The service was quick and the host/server was friendly. Their naan is delicious... I was hesitant to leave a review because part of me wants to keep this spot to myself, but just know that if you're already thinking about coming here, you're in for a treat. I would recommend it easily and will be returning soon!

Yelp
Dinner here recently began later than usual for me (I had a huge lunch) so there were plenty of open tables. But let me tell you: so many are missing out. The food here is tremendous--and the staff and chef are wonderfully friendly, really into both the neighborhood and their food contribution to it. Portions are perfectly sized (I wish I had been hungrier!) and prices are too, extremely good value.

Maryn N.

Yelp
The absolute best experience and by far the best Indian food I've ever had. The prices are so reasonable so I highly recommend just getting a little bit of everything and doing family style. I was able to try the garlic, plain and spinach naan, samosas, pakora, lamb biryani, and chicken saag. The food was absolutely phenomenal and it paired beautifully with their mango juice which was incredibly fresh. Mohan went above and beyond to make sure every dish was amazing and catered to our dietary needs/preferences. Him and Sophie also consistently checked on us to make sure we always had everything we needed. I cannot recommend this place enough and will definitely be back as soon as possible!
google avatar

Dee K.

Yelp
I can't give one star because of the hospitality. This review is solely based on food. Mines lacked much flavor and spice. I ordered the chicken biryani with a bread basket for takeout. When I got home and ready to eat, I was extremely disappointed. I've been to plenty Indian restaurants in the city and I won't be back to this one. The bread was on the burnt side and the food was just plain dry. I had to add seasoning and half of my bread was thrown out due to the burnt taste. And the meals aren't cheap so the lack of authentic taste of Indian flavor and spices really had me upset. Needless to say, first and last time for me.

Yelp
I'm in a band that travels. The four of us love Indian food. We have it whenever we have a night off . We all agreed that Lovash is our #1 fav restaurant. We tried 6 different dishes and they were all EXCELLENT. Plus, the owner , chef & staff are the greatest. Can't wait till we're back in Philly to eat here again. Thank you for a great meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably my favorite takeout place I've found in nearly two years living in Philly. Every dish we've had here has been great, but here are my usuals: Chicken tikka masala Began bhurta (SO good) Rogan josh Samosas Garlic naan

Yelp
Food was delicious! Service superb!! Also, loving the renovations!! I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a relaxing atmosphere with great music playing and amazing Indian cuisine! They take great pride in providing great food and even greater service!

tarun s.

Yelp
Scam artists.. that's what these guys are running in Philadelphia.. bought 3 Groupons it says clearly in English take out orders only.. so lovely owner says dine in only .. when you dine in .I get told take out only .. SCAM ..SCAM .. can't cook crap serve tomato soups as their curry .. go learn how to cook Indian food. Disgraceful ownership, pathetic who calls their customers liars.. be aware and make sure no one take their business to his restaurant.
google avatar

Melrose P.

Yelp
Good is AMAZING!! And service phenomenal!! They clearly label food allergies and preferences
google avatar

Idi M.

Yelp
Really far from genuine Indian taste. Should have ordered French fries with my orders to go with the ketchup-like sauces.
google avatar

Jennifer Z.

Yelp
The service is phenomenal; all the staff from cashier to chefs greeted me with warm smiles and hello's. The food if fulfilling and comforting with good flavor and the interior is a beautiful, spacious design, perfect for dining with small or big groups. I ordered the vegetable samosa, calamari masala, lamb korma, and chicken vindaloo. I enjoyed every step of the experience from ordering to eating. The only compliant I have is the food wasn't spicy although I ordered spicy, but that was easily fixed.

Bernie B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery via Caviar recently. It was so fast! I swear it was here in 20 min. Samosas and chutneys were great. Tried several vegetarian entrees and they were all good! After so many misses (what's up with Indian food in Philly?), I'll say this is a hit. Not the best ever, but solid! Looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. Their website seems to have lots of different deals and combinations for delivery that aren't available on Caviar, etc. Will have to try ordering through their website next time.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, delicious and very reasonable food, great spot for vegetarians, will be back soon!
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
Grabbed a quick vegetarian lunch box on a weekday and it was delicious! Lovash was quick to fill the order and everything was still hot by the time I was able to eat it.
google avatar

Liam M.

Yelp
Just discovered Lovash and I'm so glad I did! I appreciate all the delicious vegan options, and the website makes it easy to filter just those items so there's no confusion and order online. They've been really quick at putting together my to-go orders, and the staff has been super friendly both times I've been. In my most recent order I got the Spinach Paratha, Dal Special, Baigan Bharta, and Vegetable Pakoras and each item hit the spot. I would love if they're able to find more eco-friendly non-plastic and non-polystyrene alternatives to their to-go containers, but I'm sure that's a challenge for restaurants trying to keep costs down. I'll be back again soon!

Mare M.

Yelp
Giving this restaurant 1 star simply for the service! The food was great, but I would hate to give anymore business to such a rude staff. I ate here today with a friend and at first everything was fine. As the server kept coming back to the table, my friend started to notice that he wasn't addressing me at all. It was as if she was sitting at the table all by herself. When bringing us our drinks, he only gave her a straw. When checking if the food was okay, only asking her. Asking for refills, only talking to her. When it was time to ask for boxes, he only brought them to her. He only brought one bag to the table! When the bill came he handed it to her. I felt invisible. On the way out of the restaurant, he didn't address me at all. When my friend followed behind he wished her a good night. Maybe the staff doesn't address black patrons. This issue wasn't happening at any of the other tables. Racist? Rude! or both?!?
google avatar

Danny P.

Yelp
This is one of the only restaurants I really go to for Indian cuisine and the food is good. I just don't know why they put coupons in the Entertainment coupon book every year and then don't honor them. Obviously they are making a deal with the book to put those in there, and people pay money for those books. So it's surprising they don't accept the coupons when you go to use one.
google avatar

Plamen K.

Yelp
Okay food, pushy and uncomfortable service. Served in a plastic takeout container at the table.
google avatar

Lissette M.

Yelp
This place deserves more than 10-Stars. The food is absolutely delicious. The restaurant is a gem of Philadelphia. I find this place very romantic. Noise level is perfect. Service was wonderful. Enjoyed my date night with my husband this evening and this restaurant was the cherry on top. My husband and I are so happy we found a new restaurant to return to, time after time. Thank you Chef and staff for a lovely evening :)

Yelp
Lovash is, hands down, the best Indian restaurant in Philly. I used to live in south philly and would go to Lovash maybe 1-2 times per week. Just to put it into perspective, it's been 2 years since I've moved to Las Vegas and my first stop when I came home was to Lovash. Not only does Lovash have great food, the owner, Mohan, is a wonderful person who values customer service and making your experience and his restaurant memorable. By the way, my favorite dish is the Chana Masala
google avatar

Bruce C.

Yelp
The negative reviews are just wrong. I was treated like a king and checked on often. I'd never even heard of tandoori tofu before and it was some of the best prepared treatments I'd ever had -- really fantastic. My drink was crafted with pride, if it had come from a boutique bar I'd have been just as happy. You don't last 21 years on South Street without being fantastic, and these guys are.

Michael S.

Yelp
Lovash is my favorite Indian restaurant pretty much ever. Mohan the owner and I have become exceptional friends over the last 20 years of serving his Philly community. Hands down Chicken Tikka Masala is the best of any restaurant! My sons 6,4,2 can get enough!
google avatar

Priyanka R.

Yelp
Travelled to Philadelphia from Hershey and Lovash surely was an incentive to be there! The chicken samosa and pakoda were crazy!!! The green chutney was 10/10.. flavorful and fresh. I highly recommend everyone to try it.
google avatar

Ethan H.

Yelp
Ordered from here a couple times and the food has been great each time. I've been searching forever for a good Indian restaurant in the city since all of them seem to be in the suburbs. So glad I tried Lovash. Definitely recommend the Aloo Gobhi, Vindaloo, and Tikka Masala.

Jenyse C.

Yelp
Who ever made my food put so much love in it. Amazing. I ordered pakoras and mattar paneer sooooo good!
google avatar

Cheryl B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have walked pass this place several times and finally decided to give it a try. The gentleman who greeted us was very polite and professional. The ambience was nice, I loved the artwork and table decor. We ordered the lovash chicken wings, vegetable samosas, lamb kabobs, and mushroom vindaloo. Everything came out in a timely manner and piping hot (which I love). We will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
This is my third time at Lovash, the first two times were great. I always got the Rhogan Josh with chicken and it was always amazing. I finally recommended this place to my friends and we decided to go on a Friday night. We had 7 people in our party so I expected a little bit of a wait. However, when we were seated, it took a long time for the servers to come greet us and we had to go find the servers to take our orders. At this time, there was another table of 7 people, and a table for 2 people. It was literally 3 tables and 3 servers on a Friday night. It took 35 minutes for the appetizers to arrive, and we waited another hour for our entree. I don't know why it took so long for the food to come out. When I asked the server how long it'll take, the service said "sorry we have a lot of people to serve". There was literally 3 tables and 3 servers on a Friday night!!!!!! NO EXCUSE! The food however was great, but it was not worth an hour and 30 minute wait. They were kind enough to give us 15% off the whole bill for the wait, but I just think they can improve on their service.
google avatar

Emanuele C.

Yelp
We stopped here by chance while walking around society hill area. The restaurant is a family owned, they focus on northern Indian specialities while keeping some South influences. I loved eating here, the food was great, the owners were nice and gentle, and the bill was appropriate for the quality. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Super friendly, the food was very good. They menu had a wide variety and they customize everything how you like it (spice level, meat...etc) I would definitely go back
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Very disappointed. When we presented this gift certificate, we were told that it would not be honored. We received it with our Valentine's Day meal a few years back, as part of a package deal (something like two entrees and a desert) and at our time of payment, we were presented with this gift certificate. As it had no expiration date listed, and our meal was only so so, we took our time coming back. First, the reason was that it was not going to be honored was because it was not signed. Then, the owner came out and told me that he NEVER did a gift certificate promotion like that, essentially calling me a liar. How is it my problem that they did not sign or put an expiration date on this printed out gift certificate? I'll never know how many people also received this gift certificate, nor if any were honored, but needless to say, we are not interested in the slightest in returning. This business does not stand behind their promotions, so if you ever purchase a gift certificate or receive a coupon, BEWARE.

Yelp
I've given this place a couple tries but their food is just not very good unfortunately. They do have reasonable prices and are very friendly but that can only go so far when the food quality is lacking.
