The 15 Best Breweries in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Not a typical brewery location, Indigo Reef Brewing sits tucked off of Clements Ferry Road in an industrial area. Pouring both stable drafts like the Razzle Mania, a raspberry wheat, and rotating brews like the Tap 17 beer, Indigo Reef keeps its customers coming back to try new brews. With an in-house kitchen from Florie Dining Group, soft pretzels, tacos, popcorn, and chicken sandwiches are ready to compliment any beer." - Barbara Skidmore

I had a splendid experience here recently for the sip and shop! I tried a pilsner, a lager, and a sour, and my friend had the nachos. We loved everything and really liked the staff and the space! Indoor outdoor seating and great safe parking, not too crowded but not deserted, definitely family friendly.

My niece arranged for us to hold a baby shower for my daughter at Indigo Reef. She said she dealt with the owner and he was fantastic. The staff working the day of the shower, Brooke and Austin, went above and beyond to accommodate us. They were super friendly and very professional. Everyone was very complimentary of them and they made me want to visit Indigo Reef more often! Highly recommend!

My wife and I have been to most of the Charleston area breweries over the past two years having relocated from NY. Each one is unique regarding the location , the venue and of course the beer. Today we decided to try Indigo Reef. Very much a winner. They featured 20 beers on tap with an option for 12 and 16 oz pours or flights. We opted for two flights. Some better than others but all certainly drinkable and good. They have a wide variety of types with many IPA’s to choose from as well as other variety. They also offer bites and burgers in a comfortable setting and a very friendly and accommodating staff. Cans also available to go.

Hidden treasure in the low country. Great selection of different styles of beers. Each style is brewed to perfection. I would recommend a visit here to anyone traveling to the low country. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are very welcoming. And did I mention the beers are phenomenal?

Google
Cool spot with great beer selections and tasty bites. They also sell bags of chips and beef jerky if you just want a little snack to go with your drink. They have a large fridge full of various hard ciders, seltzers, wine and they even offer nonalcoholic options for those looking to be social but not drink. Our food came out quick and the service was great. The jerk chicken quesadilla was bomb and the dumplings were a little salty- but it could have been the sauce.

Great little brewery that is surprisingly hard to find! Worth it though. Quality beers, very personable staff, and usually decently quiet. Great place to read a book and sip on beer. Food was good, not spectacular, but you’re coming for the beer. :)

Yelp
What a wondeful experience! Indigo reef is now on my list of go to breweries! The beer was delicious. Not pictures the flight of 4 beers I tried before landing on the yuzu blonde. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and very dog friendly! The patio is well shaded and clean. They have tons of fans blowing so no fear of bugs or getting too warm.Theyre also dog friendly which is always a bonus.

Yelp
Wasn't busy when we went, bartender was nice and the beers were pretty good. Plenty of office park parking and some not fancy outdoor seating. Music they had on was good (Spotify or playlist). Also looked like there were some other alcohol-related business right nearby, like a distillery.

Yelp
Kids festival on a Friday at 7 pm. I'm talking day care center toddler city...ummm, yeah, no thanks. Beers are fine. About 15 different brews on tap across various styles. 2 beertenders, free and strong wifi. Food truck out front. Skipped that rip off. This place isn't dated at all, and they had the typical solo guitar player singer dude doing the same old cover songs inside. Plenty of picnic table seating outside and maybe 10 to 15 tables inside. Seems like a locals spot and I wouldn't drive out of my way to visit it...beers are fine, but low abvs for the most part and typical craft prices without any real beer creativity. There's nothing wrong with the place, I've just been to way, way, way cooler spots. This place, I won't even remember it a couple years from now other than what seemed like toddler and kindergarten age kids running wild absolutely everywhere to the point that the beer lady apologized to us about it. Soccer mom heaven x10000 and since I'm not even a soccer dad, yeah, no.

Yelp
I stopped in today (Monday) and they were closed, I probably should of read their times before showing up. I was a little bummed and I think the team inside could tell. As I was walking back to my car they walked out and asked if they could help me with something. I explained I just wanted to check them out and try their beer. So, they let me in and let me purchase some of their recommended Duke it out ipa. I can gladly say it was an awesome recommendation. If I'm back in Charleston I will happily be back to their taproom. They seem like a great hard working crew. Cheers mates!

Yelp
Definitely put this on your list of places to visit when you are in Charleston. This family run brewery has a very welcoming environment. Nicole and Chris make you feel like family when you're there. The Food and Brews are worth the trip.

Yelp
One of the best local spots for great beer! It's a little out of the way from a lot of places, but their beer is so good. They've recently added some food to their menu and beware, the portions are huge! We got the pretzel and nachos, both of which were delicious. Beer is always solid and they mix it up a bit too. Great spot for a local stop!
google avatar

Yelp
I love having a brewery so close to where we live on Clements Ferry! It's definitely not as big as some of the more popular breweries in the brewery district, but worth a trip to try! Haven't tried a bad beer here! Love that they have outdoor seating and live music and other events throughout the week.

Yelp
Amazing brewery. Been here a few times now and it keeps getting better. First off they have air conditioning. Hallelujah! The service is top notch, they will never leave you with an empty glass. I was pretty surprised to find such a wide variety of beer here. Typically when breweries do this their beer ends up lacking, not here. Everything is unique with its own personality. If you are ever in the area or just need to take a break from the traffic on 526. Stop by Indigo Reef, they will have something to quench even the pickiest of drinkers

Yelp
Awesome beer selection! Sampled several types and all were good...this place is a gem. They have food as well (which we didn't try this time....). This is a great addition to the craft beer scene in Charleston! Yes

Yelp
I really enjoy this brewery. If you want a nice air conditioned one then look no further. The staff is always great and the beer selection has a wide array. There's a good amount of parking so that's always a plus. I like that they have food trucks too so you can grab a brew and some grub at the same time. It doesn't hurt that it's on my route home to break up those heavy traffic days every once in awhile. Great addition to the brewery scene in Charleston.

Yelp
Nice local brewery and so close to us. We have been here several times, and it is just so busy, we usually wait a small bit to sit at the bar. There are other communal tables inside to sit, plus they have a small outdoor seating area. They have grown in beer selection since opening, and have most of the basics. But I am still waiting for a nice red ale or amber ale to enjoy. Service is good, yet with so many customers there tends to be a small wait, even for a refill. I would suggest they dedicate a small section at the bar for everyone to walk up and order, as for now you have to stand behind a bar patrons and order over/between them. This tends to be intruding (no fault of the customer), and can be improved with such an area. The Charleston brewery scene has steadily grown over the last 5 years, and Indigo Reef is another welcome brewery for all to enjoy.

Yelp
Indigo Reef is one of the newer small breweries in the Charleston area. Its situated off Clements Ferry Road, in an area where there is a lot of growth going on, so will certainly be successful. It's a fairly typical wide open space brewery, but all nicely done and comfortable. They have 12 (or is it 14?) of their beers on tap - leaning mostly to the popular IPAs, but good. The service could be improved a bit. The bartenders (owners?) were enjoying themselves and drinking beer with their buddies rather than hustling and serving beer to the customers. They also have food trucks most nights. We'll stop in again.

Yelp
Really really enjoyed the beers here - very well made, and a really great variety on tap. The taproom was clean, bright and fairly spacious. The staff was awesome! Super friendly and knowledgeable. My only gripe is the location - its kind of hard to find -- its tucked away in a nondescript shopping center, and shares parking with the rest of the occupants so it was hard to tell where I was "allowed" to park. Looking forward to coming back sometime soon!

Yelp
I usually stay away from opening week/weekend but I'm glad I got to check out Indigo Reef when they were fresh! We sat out on the patio since a friend and I had both brought our dogs, and the lovely woman inside (whose name I've forgotten) kept bringing us fresh bowls of water! I wish the gravel area was fully fenced in but it was so chill that it really didn't matter. There were 4 dogs there at one point and I can't really see it being calm with more than that since it's a smallish space. The inside is fresh and light and larger than it appears at first glance. I think they had 9 beers on tap. I tried the stout - very good but not really refreshing on a 90 degree day, haha, and then switched to the raspberry wheat for the rest of my visit. Not only was it my favorite beer there but it's up there on my list of Charleston beers. It was light and had a great flavor balance. I'm a bit worried about the parking situation if they're holding events or something but I'm sure that will be worked out in time. Otherwise, this is a great spot and I highly recommend trekking out.

Yelp
Great Place!. They offered many good selections. The New England IPA was our favorite but we also liked the drifter ale, pelican ale and Dry Irish Stout. They also have a few wine options available. Food trucks are offered a few days of the week, otherwise they have a handful packaged snacks. The Patio looked nice but it was too hot outside for us to use. Owners were extremely friendly and easy to talk to. We are excited to follow them as they join the Charleston craft beer scene!

Yelp
Really awesome brewery. It was pretty packed with patrons when we arrived but we serviced promptly by friendly staff. Beer options were plentiful and tasty. We opted for the white cheddar popcorn for another snack option and were quite happy with then taste, pricing and beer selection. Would definitely recommend and would like.to.visit again to try the additional beer offerings

Yelp
Great beers, friendly staff! This was a nice place to burn some time off on a Friday evening. There is a decent food menu. We ordered the Pretzel and beer cheese as a snack and it was plenty with the beers.

Yelp
Indigo Reef is located very close to where we live. We love that, it is tucked away from the main road, it's worth it! We've been a few times! We recently went for Flights & Bites. This event is a four beer flight pairing with four little bites. I believe they do this event often. We loved this, it's an awesome way to get to tried different beers and also like have a little appetizer! They do have other food as well a little menu you can choose from while you're in there. Their pretzel is amazing too I don't have a photo of that but it's very good and it's awesome for two people cause it's huge. We've been in there a few times and loved every time they have such a good tap list always and they have a lot to choose from. There's lots of seating inside and then they do have a little patio outside with a decent amount of tables! Their beer is wonderful I highly suggest coming here they do lots of unique events especially the flights event come check them out!

Yelp
Finally made it out to try Indigo! Excellent beers. Only 1 bar tender who ended up being very busy due to the unexpected crowd. She did an excellent job considering. All good things, except for how far away from James Island it is. Highly recommend

Yelp
So glad we finally made it to check this place out! They had a great selection of beers on tap. The inside is pretty spacious and they have outside seating. They also have a lot of toys/games for kids and adults to play! I had a stout and a new IPA they released. They both were great! They also had Puerto Rican food available which looked delicious but we didn't get any. Staff was very nice as well! Cant wait to go back.

Yelp
Man we love this little spot. So close to the house less than a mile away. They have some great beers and are always making new ones. Try their New England IPA Mola mola it's delicious. They always have a lot of food trucks out front. And their hours are great. Staff is super friendly. And The service is prompt and polite!!! Fantastic spot and a must stop on your brewery to do list for Charleston.

Yelp
Wife and I went to Indigo during their opening week. Their beer selection is well rounded and there is something for everyone. I lean towards hoppy experiences but also tried my wife's Irish stout. My wife loved everything she tasted and overall I am pretty pleased with their brews. I'm not blown away by their bold flavors nor do I see them really experimenting around, but hey, it was their opening week and my tastes are usually on the extreme end of the scope. Very hazy and hoppy IPAs. Stouts as dark as night with a hefty, velvety head to it, warm with some leaves floating in it. That's my kind of beer. Indigo plays it pretty safe with some middle of the run flavors. I expect they'll get a little more settled and start bringing some bolder flavors to the game. I'll go back and check it out and post another review. Keep going guys, you're doing great. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Yelp
By far the best beer variety in any local brewery. Beer is always good and staff are always friendly. Very kid friendly and a nice bright environment!

Shelbi B.

Yelp
I love that this is a family friendly brewery. I feel comfortable taking my kids here.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite brewery in Charleston!! Quick, attentive service from the bar staff. Creative and delicious selection of brews. They offer a wide array of food trucks on most nights. Truly, you couldn't ask for a better place to grab a beer with friends and family. The interior is rustic and clean. I love coming here and I tell everyone I know in the Charleston area to check this brewery out!!

Yelp
We had a great time here when we visited our friends down in Charleston. One of the beers tasted like Guinness so the men were very happy campers. We will be going back when we visit this weekend because everyone loved it

Yelp
Awesome beer with great variety, be sure to get a sampler to try some different styles. Staff is super helpful. Cool interior and food is awesome.

Yelp
Great little brewery off the beaten track! My son and I were looking for a brewery to go to that also serve wine since I'm allergic to beer. Turns out that's a really hard thing to do. So glad that Indigo Reef was one of the few we could find. The wine was great and my son totally enjoyed the beer. The staff wore masks and there was plenty of room for social distancing. We sat outside at a table and were even treated to a few beignets. Definitely a spot we'll visit again.

Morgen M.

Yelp
LOve the beer here! BEst brewery in town! All the beErs I tried were delicious and the bartenders were super nice

Yelp
beer fresh and smooth. friendliest peeps you will ever meet. my 13 year old... "best burger i've ever had." gotta agree. hidden gem.

Gervais D.

Yelp
One of my favorite Breweries in Charleston, more of a local spot but they have a great beer selection with a lot of variety. Even for people that don't love craft beer anyone could find something they like here. Can wait to see what they come up with next! Definitely recommend checking it out!

Megan M.

Yelp
One of our absolute favorite breweries! So laid back. The entire staff is so friendly and helpful. All of the beers are good. The recent addition of the kitchen and new menu are great! Ham and cheese sandwich is amazing! You will feel like a member of the family going to the brewery. The owner may even take you on a quick tour.

Mandy C.

Yelp
Came in today for happy hour. There was a nice crowd and service was fast, friendly and efficient!! I had three different brews and enjoyed them all, plus one of my favorite food trucks in Charleston, Johnny Poppers, was serving burgers out front. Great place for a group.

Jordan F.

Yelp
Exactly what you want in a brewery: beers were fantastic and every time I come there are new ones, big open space with plenty of places to sit at the bar, long tables or outside, pet/kid friendly, owners and staff were super friendly and spent time to just talk and answer questions. It's so close to 526 so makes it easy to get to from Daniel Island. Love it!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
A little bit out of town. Had a Mola Mola, not bad! No dogs allowed inside. No flights offered, although, they said "not yet" when I asked, so maybe it's a future goal. Prices are normal. Definitely worth trying once. Will try again in 6 months after they've had a chance to establish themselves.

Jeffery M.

Yelp
Very nice place. Good atmosphere. I had the Drift Drive Citra IPA which was refreshing. Will definitely be back.
