Orange County’s International Markets, a Culinary Haven in Southern California - Eater LA

"In 2010, Wati Wolf opened Indo Ranch OC in Lake Forest, southeast of Irvine. A compact market inside offers a variety of Indonesian pantry staples and Southeast Asian-style snacks such as krupuk (Javanese fried crackers) and Teh Botol jasmine tea, both essentials for most Indonesian American meals — but it’s the attached restaurant that is the main attraction." - Jenn Tanaka

Lucky us at least we got to eat here on the last day of our travel back to Vegas. We were there on 4th of july as usual most of the restaurants were closed early on that day. Luckily we went in to this restaurant before they closed.Food was great! Delicious! My wife purchased bunch of stuffs from the store as well. We don't get these in Las Vegas! so why not! We lived in Malaysia for some years before we moved here. We love Malaysian/Indonesian food for life! I had a conversation with the lady probably the owner. She is so down to earth, She was happy to know that we are from k.L! Can't wait to come eat here again!

I ordered the satay ayam. Came out fresh, good overall flavor. The tofu dish was actually really good. I ate it so fast I almost forgot a photo. The dipping sauce is more sweet than spicy. Es cendol was the best out for the two desserts. Highly recommend the es cendol. Es campur was decent but a little too sweet for my liking. Not pictured was the nasi campur. I liked it but my wife didn’t care for it. Some tweaking and I think it would be a popular item.

Do you like asian food? Do you like Thai and Filipino food? Are you adventurous and not lame? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions above, then make your way to this random neighborhood between Irvine and Lake Forest and bring your appetite. Don’t get it spicier than “medium”, though, unless you’re a fire Pokémon. 10/10 would recommend.

I went to Indo Ranch for the first time last night to grab a couple orders of nasi bungkus and to peruse through the grocery section. (Aunt) Wanda was very gracious and personable! She answered a lot of my questions on Indo cuisine AND sent me home with extra servings of sayur lodeh and sayur asem. Thoroughly enjoyed the bungkus at home with plenty to eat the next day.

Hidden between San Diego and Los Angeles this restaurant in Orange County has delicious Indonesian food. We drove up an hour from San Diego to give it a try and were very happy with the menu, tasty food and welcoming service. Everything here is like home cooked Indonesian food. They also have small supermarket to buy Indonesian grocery items which was a bonus.

Google
My absolute favorite Indonesian restaurant in all of socal. So delicious and most authentic Indonesian food I’ve had besides being in Indonesia. Kind of pricey but worth it since it is hard to come across good Indonesian food. Nice add on in the store that literally has everything you need. Workers are extremely friendly. 10/10 would recommend if you’re in the area. A must try.

Google
Amazing halal Indonesian food! Highly recommend trying this place out if you’re craving noodles, fried rice, or anything spicy!! It’s run by some real homies so they hook it up when it comes to flavour and quantity! Many a times I have shared a plate with a homie and have left very satiated. If it’s your first time, get the satay sticks, they be hella moist and tender. Also the fried ride is fireeeeee 🔥🔥🔥You’ll leave happy not hungry.

Google
What a sad sad day when we visited this restaurant. With the new management, no more otak otak, pempek, sate kambing, resoles, pastel, mie baso abang, mie ayam kampung, martabak. Basically no jajajan foods. For Indonesian standard, the mie goreng is not as tasty. Kurang bumbu 😐 I guess maybe they are trying to target "bule" customers. Couldn't finish it after 4-5 bites, took it home. The nasi bungkus, portion is smaller and rendang was a bit on the tough side. Service was super slow. Left the restaurant still hungry 😢

Yelp
Indonesian restaurants are very limited in Laguna Niguel. And to find food that my mother used to make is near to Impossible. But I found Indo Ranch which holds high standards of Indonesian food. They have different kinds of specials each day and they also have a place where you can get Indonesian grocery products. The people there are very respectful and give you that Indonesian culture of hospitality. I encourage people that have never tried Indonesian food to give it a try at Indo Ranch and get that wonderful Indonesian food experience.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place, when they were still the old management. I have to say that the old days of Indo Ranch are much better than this new one. Call me picky, but the Indonesians I know emphasize the customer service and friendliness of their place. We come here to feel at home, to taste the food of home, and to experience a warm welcome as we are the same. Well, my last visit was not great. We came in after lunch, about 2 p.m. Though there were many customers inside, there were no staff around. We had to wait and call one of the staff so we could get our order in. The service: It went downhill from there. First, the person who was helping us did not bother to offer us any drinks--water, soda--none of that. Apparently, you have to go and "self-serve" yourself by picking what drinks are available on the counter. 1. The menu has significantly been downsized; it is no longer exciting. When I tried to order the "mie ayam" (chicken noodle), they did not have it--so why are you even putting it on the menu? 2. Then we have the utensils, which have different shapes and markings! Oddly, you have different spoon sizes, and the forks and the spoons do not seem like they came from the same set - not a dealbreaker, but there are no efforts whatsoever. They give us one piece of napkin to share - apparently, even when two people are dining. The food: 1. Mie goreng is very soggy; it is almost as if it is wet coming out of the wok; I did not even finish it. I took it home and hoped to eat it after, but I ended up throwing it away. The taste is mediocre at best. 2. Nasi campur - the portion was small, some of the side dish, the gudeg is fine, but the chicken was overly salty, the beef rendang was tough - the meat is not tender! I would not even think the rest of the menu would fare any better. It is sad to say that this place hit none of the mark in terms of customer service and food quality.

Yelp
FOOD: I really wanted to love this place because it's so close to my house. However, the portions here are so small. I ordered take out - one of my orders was the lamb curry. For $19.95 there were only two small pieces of meat in my curry (see photo). I thought this was really unreasonable and quite frankly a little offensive. Overall, I spent about $200 for a party of 5 - I don't think I do it again. The little market inside the store, however, is well stocked and reasonably priced.

Yelp
I don't know what these bad reviews are on about because the nasi bungkus is so good!!!! They remodeled the place and it looks a lot cleaner now. Everyone was super friendly will definitely be back :)

Yelp
Decided to give this place another try after hearing about new staff and management, and I had a good experience. Prices are lower than they were the last time I was here, the food was pretty good, drinking water is available, and I had no issues with the check. All of the issues I mentioned before have been addressed. Will be back!

Yelp
Delicious Indonesian food and decent market. Food is made fresh when you order. A bit on the pricier side, but nice sized portions and tastes delicious. Hard to find Indonesian markets and restaurants in SoCal.

Yelp
Very good food. Love it. Ate it all. Taste amazing. Come here every week. Very delicious and fresh.

Yelp
Decided to stop by and had Nasi Bungkus for lunch. The portion was huge! We're talking about fried chicken, beef rendang, hard boiled egg smothered in red chili sauce (sambal balado), young jackfruit stew (sayur nangka) and green chili paste (sambal ijo). They're all pretty tasty and so fulfilling. I'll definitely be back and try other foods.

Yelp
Open under new much improved management! Today 1/15/24 a Nederlander and I had the best lunch of 7 visits over 8 years! For years my wife refused to go back but she would have enjoyed the nasi goreng, gado gado, and sate today. I just came off of a Holland America Cruise where I had Indonesian four times. IMHO today's lunch was as good. I will definitely return soon and take friends!

Yelp
Went to have dinner here last night, and was disappointed! The table was greasy, the food was salty, and was not good; they were served on plastic containers. We didn't finish our food, what waste of money and time coming here since we were from out of state. The bathroom was dirty as well.

Karina H.

Yelp
The food doesn't taste good and is not fresh. I want to like this place as the owner is really sweet.

Yelp
Alas, I must share our first (and probably last) food experience at Indo Ranch. What we ordered: the chicken skewers appetizer, the house special crispy duck with rice and a drink. The Good: the can of juice. The Bad: the chicken skewers were dry, overly salted and spiced. The Ugly: the duck leg was an old and dried out, on a bed of steamed rice that was also dried and old lasting. The bed of crispy crunch the duck was on was a hidden land mine of chili. Instinctively, I went for the sliced cucumbers which turned out to be bitter instead of refreshing. What the ?!? Husband tossed the meal before I was able to grab a mug shot. Takeaways: trust your gut. Above all, trust the crowd. No one. I mean no one was here. The food in the deli case looked older than last weeks leftovers in my fridge. I somehow think, the man who owns this place doesn't really care to have anyone come back or the chef got Covid and lost his sense of taste and smell or both. Sheesh...

Yelp
Great Indonesian food Wanda now has new cooks and lots of Indo Ingredients supplies to make Indo food.

Edwina I.

Yelp
I placed an order to go. The food was delicious, but it took a full hour to get it. There was a lady waiting for her to-go order next to me and she said, yes, it usually takes an hour to get your food. I think they cook each meal from scratch, so it's understandable, but I was not prepared for the long wait. I ordered the beef rendang and the sate ayyam and the cendol. As I said, they were delicious and authentic.

Peter R.

Yelp
Now you can order and eat in, take out is still available, if you need to. The menu is still growing.

Ginger V.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday late morning with my mom and other family, they're busy with the catering order. I looked at the menu and they have Ketoprak. I told the lady in the cash register I want to order Ketoprak but then she asked the owner Natalie if they have Ketoprak. Natalie and her rude answer was like " don't order any weird stuff. We don't have Ketoprak". First of all, it's on the menu. Second of all, why can't you answer without an attitude with a customer? My parents also own a restaurant and never once they give attitude with their customers. Not coming back. There are other Indonesian restaurants that way more better than this place.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
If I could give this 0 stars! This place needs to be shut down! Dirty! Disgusting! Handling food after handling cash money how gross!! Food was absolutely gross! Food poisoning awaits! Omg just close your place! You obviously just can't do this your embarrassing yourself. Yuk yuk yuk

Yelp
This food is awesome. It's super delicious and very authentic. It's a must eat I would say.

Yelp
Used to be our favorite go to indonesian restaurant but now the food wasn't like before, I prefer the taste before they change the management. Ordered Nasi Goreng and you can really taste the difference from before. :( Service is really slow now too. I hope they improve.

Yelp
Small seating area with a few tables next to a little Indonesian grocery store. Had the Nasi Bunkus and Es Cendol. Both were fantastic. I'm familiar with Sri Lankan cuisine, and the Nasi Bunkus was like lamprais but with beef. It was served in a banana leaf. If you like spicy food, you'll love this. The drink was like wattalappam in liquid form. The family had nasi goreng ayam, which was a very tasty fried rice. Overall, great food with friendly service in a small, family owned restaurant.
google avatar

Karma N.

Yelp
Food was very tasty. We tried the oxtail soup, beef rendang, and nasi goreng with pineapple. The wait staff was very nice but spoke only a little English. That was ok with me. I liked the grocery store that's attached. It was small but had some items that's hard to find else where. The only downside of the whole establishment is it was very hot inside. We sat outside to get a little cooler.

Yelp
Although this place is really a hole in the wall, the food is just amazing! The fried chicken and fish had crunch shell and tender juice meat inside. The crunch bits added to its deliciousness. The satays with sauce were yummy, the hot pepper sauce paired really well with the dishes (I was sweating and burning up but couldn't stop eating them!). The beef curry was authentic and really creamy. This one of my family's favorite restaurants and will always come here when we're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Indo Ranch serves the best Indonesian food. The chicken/lamb satay is a must try. All their food are authentic Indonesian. Will be back again.

Yelp
All I can say is WTF happened to their Indonesian food?! My family went to Indo Ranch last year and it was the best Indonesian food! We ordered again tonight and it was the worse Indonesian food! Their quality decreased ALOT. We ordered 5 dishes: -Nasi Kuning Complete -Ayam Penyet -Bak Mie Ayam Kampung -Flying Fish -Kwetiau Goreng The Nasi Kuning Complete was a total let down! There was only one fried chicken drumstick and one piece of beef Rendang and one overcooked egg OMG! This was $14 dish!!! The noodles were very bland and the fried chicken was burnt and tasted like old chicken! Oh man all the dishes except the flying fish was a disappointment! We were so disappointed!!! Looks like we gotta find a new Indonesian place now.

Yelp
I'm Indonesian. This place is good. Highly recommend. Don't knock their paper plates and plastic utensils. You have to appreciate the food and the people. I love coming here and stocking up on supplies.

Yelp
I was super stoked to find an Indonesian place in OC! If you know they are kinda hard to come by. I tried to order online via Yelp but that kept giving me errors so had to actually call & talk to a person on the phone! How dreadful! jk. This place is randomly located in a strip mall in Lake Forest - not where I would imagine a place like this to be. The minute I walked in I was barely acknowledged. I think I got more of the customers attention than the employees working. It took THE LONGEST time for them to acknowledge me. I felt stupid just standing there by he register so I went to look at the "store" to see what was over there. After doing that, I went back to the register & still more waiting. Matter of fact, the lady that came in after me was helped first which was surprising. For what I ordered (mie goreng & paratha), the total was over $20. I would of been fine with that if the portion was larger, but I finished it in one setting. Outrageous! The meal was good but I definitely wouldn't eat here too often as the service was sub par & the prices are expensive for the portion size.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
The restaurant has a few tables for dine in and a "market" inside that carries flavor sauce packs, a few snacks, coconut milk, noodles, and chili. The rice and noodle dishes are on the blander side and could use more spices and/or seasoning. There are other spots, although further, that are much better.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Excellent food and staff. Very standard ambiance but worth going. Outside seating. Indonesian grocery store attached. I would recommend fried noodles.
google avatar

Yelp
Good indonesian hole in the wall. I've came here for a while now and the quality of the flavor has always been consistent. The portions have definitely decreased which is common during covid season in many restaurants which is understandable. I got the number 1 with the jackfruit and chicken over rice in banana leaf. Oh man, they make their chicken with love and their spicy sauce? I could literally just eat that over rice every day! It's so special. The chicken has this unique crunch and flavor-- I'd have no idea how i'd recreate it at home. I'm craving this meal as I type about it. I've also got their curry which is full with flavor. I also recommend their garlic chips they keep in the container. Such good popping crunch and compliments any meal. In the fridge, they have some desserts -- i particularly like the indonesian sponge cake. So light, fluffy and not too sweet. There is also a shared convenient store on the side where you can buy indomie, indonesian snacks and ingredients to bring home. Support mom&pop shops! Highly recommend

Yelp
In Orange County, you don't have much options around Indonesian cuisines. But man, I'm sure glad a good friend took me here for lunch. Asked the server on what she would recommend and there it was, "Nasi Bungkus." If you can handle a little bit of spice, this rice dish will blow you away with new found flavors. Even if you're not a fan of spicy, ask them to leave it out. Not the same but the flavors are still there. Its wrapped in a banana leaf with all the good stuff steaming each and cross pollinating their aromas. They do have lunch specials here as well but so far, I couldn't get enough of this dish. Perhaps one day, I'll venture out to other items. They also have a market on the side that you can get some really good ingredients. If you are making some Asian dishes, they may have what you are looking for and save you a trek to the bigger Asian groceries. Stop in and check out this mom and pop shop. Its good!
google avatar

Girly M.

Yelp
I bought nasi bungus and their price is pretty pricy for having nothing in the warp of the rice. Not worth the price
google avatar

Alice M.

Yelp
Family run restaurant with a small market of Indonesian snacks on one side of the store. The food is mostly Padang style with common traditional dishes. Met my basic expectations for home cooked Indonesian dishes without having to drive to SG.
google avatar

Olga Y.

Yelp
I come here for the location. The food taste is ok, but i give 1 star for the price. There is no price tag for the cakes item on the counter and I feel like I being overcharged every time I shop here, even when I paid, I don't get my listed price items but only the total for the credit card charge to sign.
google avatar

Kenn S.

Yelp
Excellent food. The Nasi Padang was so good. The fried rice is delicious. They have a nice side grocery with harder to find Indonesian goods. The food here is great, you really can't go wrong.

Nz R.

Yelp
The food was amazing service was very friendly The vibe of the place wasjust really cool

Silvy G.

Yelp
If you came here before and disappointed, please give them another try. I came here today and was pleasantly surprised. I think they're listening to their customers and is improving. Ordered Nasi Padang and it was plentiful and flavorful. Hit the spot for sure! I ordered spicy and I got spicy! Service was warm and attentive. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Ambiance: the establishment served as a combination of indo restaurant and grocery store Service: very friendly and fast, patient with orders and questions Food & Drink: simple menu items, and their lunch specials seem inexpensive Nasi Bungkus - **** beef rendang, rice wrapped in banana leaf served with egg balado, fried chicken, jackfruit curry and smbal ijo, very bold taste combo, recommend Soto Betawi - *** coconut curry soup with beef, tomato, potato and green onion, the beef was too dry Lapis Pandan - **** eggs, butter, sugar, flower, milk, pandan flavor, layers cake, recommend Durian Smoothie - *** blended durian smoothie, light taste Price: decent portions and prices for meals, but overpriced for drink and desserts, about $25 per person

Yelp
If there were negative stars would give -5. We had ordered n told them very very clearly we are vegetarians n no egg, no fish, no mwat. When we reached home we found eggs, shrimps in food. This is clike corrupting our religious beliefs. We had to trash the food. We should get full refund.
google avatar

K B.

Yelp
Delicious choices and durian smoothie for the win. Simple but nice food that gives a glimpse of a unique cuisine.

Yelp
Finally, another authentic Indonesian spot! I discovered Indo Ranch while driving around in the area. My girlfriend and I went during an odd hour so there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. We ordered the Sate Ayam, Soto Betawi and the Nasi Padang. The sate was good, I love the rice balls that come with it. The soto was really good too, I wish it came with a bowl of rice. I ended up having to take rice from my girlfriend's dish. The Nasi Padang was really good too, portion was large and I loved the sambal ijo. Overall a great meal, it's a bit out of the way for me, but if I'm ever in the area, will definitely be back!
google avatar

Tr N.

Yelp
A hidden gem. Only disappointment is that the market isn't open on Saturday evening. Bami was awesome and beef satay was very good. Sauce on satay not what hubby expected so they offered peanut sauce (also very different than "moms") but very good. Service was so friendly and attentive. Hubby is Indonesian. I occasionally cook Indo food but he eats it faster than I care to make it. So I found this place in an issue of LA Times. We will return for meals and will be sure the market is open before we go. Note: they do not serve pork. And prices may seem high. But if you ever made this food yourself you'll realize it's very reasonably priced. This food take a lot of time and effort to prepare properly and this delicious.

Yelp
Oh my gerd.. found this place and been craving Indonesian food like crazy. Since moving to San Diego, we can't find any good Indonesian food but luckily this is located in North OC so it's not a bad drive vs driving to LA. Let's talk about the food. I had nasi rames and my daughter had nasi kuning. It was soooo good. We really like the rendang. I love the soup that comes with my meal. But you got to like heat. The rendang wasn't bad but the egg was a little spicy but it was soo good and I would've eat it all but I have sensitivity to salt so it was a bit salty for me. We also order 2 drink es campur and es Doger. Es doger came out like a shake ‍ so it was alright. Now the goodies, we bought so much lol there's a store inside the restaurant also. I bought a box of Indonesian sweet tea. The goodies.. we got terang bulan, bikang ambon, cheese cracker, and lapis surabaya. They aren't cheap but since I haven't had it in a while, I didn't mind the splurge. All in all, we spent about $145 for 4 dishes (we brought home 2), all the goodies, box of tea, and our drinks. But it's so worth it!!
google avatar

Brigitta k.

Yelp
Came here at 11am, right when they're suppose to open. They didn't open up till 11:15. Took an hour for our food to come out. it's definitely not worth the hour wait.

Yelp
Their AC was NOT on and we went there summer day. Service was so slow. Place was not clean. There was food that's display outside and not covered. They charge hidden extra fees and cost for anything without asking. Food was not fresh. Chicken curry was very dry. We felt scammed. We were NOT informed on extra cost and charge. Never coming back. Not recommended

Yelp
Indonesian food, not very popular as most people tend to not understand the ingredients or they can't read the name of the dish. So it's hard to make sense of what it is. A little googling won't hurt, wouldn't it? But this dish is not for everyone. If you do try it, you've expanded your horizons my friend. I love Indonesian food and it all started with Mi Goreng, Nasi Goreng and the introduction of the "Sambal" flavor, it's Malaysian and also Indonesian I think (don't quote me on this). It's how they make their food "hot and spicy". Indonesian dishes tend to be a combination of sweet, savory, hot and spicy with occasional sour and bitter flavors. And the sauces are thick and rich in flavors. It's kinda like curry, the richness not the flavor. Anyway, try their combo dishes which will introduce you to different types of dishes in one plate. A word of caution though if you don't appreciate fermentation and fermented smells then this is not for you. If you like your food to be nicely plated, this is not for you. The presentation looks very homey, home cook like serving. I tried this place out several times just to make sure that the review is just and fair. Id give it four stars for the flavors. It is so interesting some of the flavors cross over from my heritage. Which reminds me of home. The waiting time here takes probably 40 mins even to pick up your order. I tried different methods to just walk in and order and to pick up and order, both are almost the same time. I called in and been told 30 mins and while there I waited for another 20mins. Which probably deters most people. So plan ahead.. and maybe expect delays.. no pun intended. There's also a mini grocery store inside, you can peruse while waiting for your pick up. There's a minimum amount of $10 for you to use the credit card. Just FYI.

Yelp
This place so over rated, with ridiculous portion and over price ! Don't order the drink !, the portion is so little for $ 6 and $7 , mostly just ice and syrup , what they are kidding ? If I can choose no STAR , I would give them that . The food taste very un-authentic . I have taste Indonesian Food in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Oakland , Seattle, Miami and others . Probably this place is at bottom . We tried 15 dishes and different Drinks and snacks , spent about $ 300. It's the worst meals .

Yelp
The place it's dirty, the food definitely horrible being reheated million times expensive for nothing, it's embarrassed to claimed authentic Indonesian food,I rather spend the money for Thai cuisine

Yelp
Just don't come here. Pricey and it isn't good. What a waste of money. Honestly very disappointed at this place.

Yelp
Had a great night here with our Indo-Chinese friend and our new acquaintances! We didn't know anything about Indo dishes, so we let him be the commander. We tried so many different flavors and textures, and most importantly, everything was delicious! Few dishes that I loved were - satay kambing (lamb), soto ayam (soup of the chicken), nasi bungkus (rice with meat), gado gado (salad with peanut sauce) and the homemade chips!!! And don't forget the dessert lapis pandan, the overpriced layered cake that was so dense, so eggy and so good! (If you don't think $16 for a sponge cake-like dessert is expensive, then I don't know what to say...) One thing though - this is a super duper casual restaurant with a small market attached to it. No ambiance whatsoever and they had a panda express type of set up once you walk in, but they did have full waiting service where you can order from the menu. Oooo can't wait to go back!
