Indy's Sandwich - Review - Portland, ME - The Infatuation

"Indy’s Sandwich is a great place to stop for a quick meal. The menu is full of vegetarian options, and most of the sandwiches can be celiac-friendly if you get it on gluten-free bread. We’re huge fans of the Henny Penny, which features a juicy and piping-hot piece of fried chicken, but the katsu curry with rice also works if you’re craving something warm and comforting. There’s plenty of space to sit inside, but you may be tempted to come back to the counter to order more snacks or a glass of nitro Thai tea before you head out." - Anne Cruz

The chicken was fried to perfection! The balance of flavor from the pickled red onions to the teriyaki mayo elevated this sandwich to the next level. Even the lettuce made a big difference. I don’t think I want anything but shredded lettuce on my sandwich’s again. All between the perfect brioche bun this sandwich with is playful name an overall theming don’t let this chicken little fool you it’s anything but!

Bless You

Google
Thank you Lindsey!! Omg! This place rocks. Absolutely wonderful sandwich & sweet coffee. Service was outstanding. Such a thoughtful sweetheart! Truly home cooked boutique food. A true gem. Must see 10 out of 5 stars!! Thank you. Above & beyond.

Google
This is a cute little cafe. All the sandwiches have nursery rhyme names. I had the three little pigs and my partner had the lion and the mouse. Both sandwiches were delicious! The French fries are also delicious but the serving size is large and can be shared. Super friendly staff and a constant flow of people getting to go orders. Parking lot is very small and the dining room is also small so be aware. They do have outside seating as well. We plan to come back here a 2nd time and try more of their delicious food before our vacation is over.

This is my favorite place to go with my dad on the weekends. We’ve been going for two years now and the people working there know us by name! (Well they know my dad’s name because he places the orders.) Our favorite thing to get there is the Egg & Cheese with salt and pepper. And the Vietnamese iced coffee too! Definitely would recommend — 5 stars! ⭐️

Google
Indy’s is a great little sandwich spot in South Portland. The atmosphere was quaint, clean and colorful. Very trendy! There was parking, but it filled up quickly. The staff was friendly, informative and attentive. I got my sandwich to go but there was seating available inside— in fact, if I had the time to stay and eat, I probably would have. Their menu is broad and diverse, so you can find something for everyone. This is also the first time I had Nitro Thai Cold Brew Tea and it was delicious! I will definitely be back!

Google
First meal we had, and it was the highlight of our day. We went specifically for breakfast, and had the Spam breakfast sandwich, Kai Kata breakfast sandwich, Pork Wonton soup (special) and Vietnamese coffee. Sandwiches were astounding. Wontons were good (would prefer a filling with a little more than just pork, but the broth was refreshing). Vietnamese coffee was strong (as it should be). Lots of reviews here for lunch, but really breakfast deserves equal praise.

Google
Was in early, before the lunch rush, and it was awesome! Breakfast sandwich was delicious, and the nitro cold brew Thai tea was amazing. Highly recommend checking them out!

Google
This is such a hidden delight! I am so happy I happened to stop and give it a try, this was the best sandwich I’ve ever had. I ordered the Henny Penny. At first I thought how on earth can I even bite this giant glorious sandwich but gave into the messy deliciousness. Great atmosphere for dining in. Very friendly staff! I got my sandwich fairly quickly also.

Yelp
Great local sandwich shop! We stopped in around noon on a weekday, and promptly ordered a few sandwiches with a side of fries. Both sandwiches were delicious, the highlight being the eggplant The team there was obviously working hard to get out a lot of orders. I'd probably opt for chips over fries next time, but can't wait to go back to try the breakfast too.

Yelp
Stopped by here on our way to Bar Harbor and loved my sandwich! Taking a bite it was clear that it was made with perfection to detail, and the ambiance was clearly going for a cozy, pick up and go vibe that was perfect for travelers like myself. If I ever go back up towards Maine again, I am adding to this my trip for sure as a stop.

Yelp
Did takeout with 2 Henny Penny chicken sandwiches and a Tam and Cam Banh mi sandwich. We also had 2 orders of fries with truffle salt. Order and pick up easy. Friendly staff. We enjoyed the chicken sandwiches a lot. The flavor of the spicy teriyaki mayo was fantastic. Chicken was fried to perfection. The bun was soft and good and I liked the shredded lettuce and tomato. We had 2 complaints about the sandwiches though. I assumed the chicken was white meat, but was actually 2 thighs in the sandwich. Fine with the dark meat although it did change the flavor profile from a typical chicken sandwich. Problem was it made the sandwich difficult to eat trying to keep both thighs squished together without one popping out the side and falling out. Easier to cut the sandwich in half and make 2, each with its own thigh. Other problem was there is a TON of sauce on it. Spicy and teriyaki mayo. Great flavor, but very hard to eat. This is a stack o' napkins type of deal. Made quite the mess and would have been fine with a little less sauce. Otherwise good sandwich. The Tam and Cam was ok per my friend . She has banh mi frequently. Her critique was that the veggies didn't have typical cucumber which she missed and the bread was not the usual. She didn't love the panini style with it. Fries were excellent. Huge portion - we could have done one order. Loved the spicy sauce and teriyaki mayo with them. I would go back to try some other sandwiches.

Yelp
Perfect post surf bite on the way home from Higgins beach. We have driven past this place dozens of times and finally decided to stop in. Nitro coffee- nutty sweet $4.75 Vietnamese coffee- not too sweet $5.75 Thai tea- not so milky Incredible prices. XL - Plenty of bacon & sausage, light on cheese. Needs sauce. Breads good. Thumbelina - creative sandwich. eggplant was crunchy and avo was perfect. Definitely not traditional.

Yelp
Banger of an establishment . Enough said. Additional characters are not needed. Drink water. Stay hydrated.

Yelp
The more I explore South Portland, the more I discover little gems like this one tucked in along Main Street. First of all, how cute is this place? From the cheerful smiley sign outside to the simple yet colorful decor inside--and the very nice people working there--Indy's is welcoming right from the start. It's small, but there are a few tables (including a couch area), so you can eat in or take out. And if you have a hankering for a sandwich, this is where you want to be! I had the Tam & Cam, which is their version of a banh mi: the meats and condiments are pressed instead of being in a large bun. Gotta say, it was perfection: everything melded together wonderfully and the way it's pressed ensures that you get a bit of everything in each bite. Super fresh pickled daikon, carrot, and jalapeños all chopped up help too. Yum! There was a friendly couple sitting next to me who had a cheeseburger and the Henny Penny (a fried chicken sandwich), both of which looked and smelled amazing--so clearly there's more here I'll need to try! Lots of gluten free and veg options, too. There's a good selection of drinks in the case and a few beers on tap too, if that's your fancy. If you haven't already, find a reason to stop by and give Indy's a try!

Yelp
If you haven't tried this spot yet- you must! Conveniently located off of route 1, with a good amount of parking- Indy's is a gem. Very welcoming atmosphere & with dine in option. The service was fast, efficient & very friendly. I ordered a #1 Jack & the beanstalk (vegan & GF)- cauliflower, house made relish, fig spread & mozzarella cheese pressed in ciabatta bread, it was amazing! I devoured it. My friend ordered the #7 Henny Penny - fried chicken, lettuce, Tomato, & pickled onion with terikyai mayo on a brioche bun, Highly recommended! The fries are delicious - they had a truffle sea salt seasoning. I couldn't stop eating them. Can't wait to go back and try something else!

Yelp
Surprisingly good food, inventive, nicely presented. Just don't go at lunch rush. I didn't realize they were that popular.

Yelp
We finally tried Indy's Sandwich, and all we can say is... WOW. These were some of the best sandwiches we have had in a very long time. The flavors they have created through carefully combined ingredients are just unreal. Don't walk -- run to Indy's for one of their delicious creations. We ended up ordering My Father's Dragon and the Henny Penny and honestly, we can't deicide which one was better. Absolutely loved the fig spread on My Father's Dragon; the rest of the ingredients were delicious as well, but the fried chicken sandwich was also impeccable! Service was also top-notch. We called a few hours before to place our order and everything was ready by the time we arrived. They were well staffed, so picking up our order and paying was a breeze. The place also has the cutest vibe and ambiance -- everything was nicely decorated and the restaurant felt welcoming and cozy. Although we did takeout, I'd love to dine-in next time. We can't wait to be back! PS: Good luck deciding on a sandwich! We were overwhelmed by the options; everything looked divine.

Yelp
Defffffinitely a gem. This is the first time I've been in the area and I looked up places to grab a sandwich. Indy's seemed like a great choice based on their ratings and menu items. I wanted to try something a little different since their offerings were a little above the standard deli fare. The #7 Henny Penny (fried chicken sandwich) is a-ma-zing! The first bite was like a hit of crack... not that I would know. The amount of sauce with all the ingredients really works in perfect harmony. Best fried chicken sandwich I've had anywhere. The #11 Mother Goose (Italian-inspired turkey) is like a panini. Definitely had that Italian taste. The pesto and the provolone really stand out. They seem to have an abundance of staff. When I came in around 11:30, there was only one customer eating in, and nobody in line. After waiting about 15 minutes for my sandwiches, there was a line to the door! Lots of customers were picking up orders, so I would definitely recommend calling or clicking ahead so reduce the wait time. The parking lot is pretty small and was a zoo when I was leaving. I'm sure their other items must be incredible and I will definitely come by again. There's something for everyone, even regular burgers! This is the sort of place that is worth a special journey once in a while.

Yelp
Indy's offers an inventive selection of sandwiches in a sunny, inviting space. Many items have an Asian flair, but there's a lot of variety in the menu.

Yelp
One of the best sandwich places I have ever been to in South Portland. The service was quick and they have a lot of cute seatings. It got super busy when we went which is a good sign! Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sandwich in Maine. No competition. Their sandwich combinations are out of this world and are so clearly made with the highest quality ingredients. You will leave here without a CRUMB on your plate. Super cute dining area as well. Come HUNGRY!

Joshua C.

Yelp
This place is killer ! We were staying at the merry manor for the weekend and found this gem. Sandwiches used quality ingredients and were carefully arranged. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Recently checked our Indy's cool little sandwich shop in a really odd location in south Portland. But if a sandwich place can make it there it can make it anywhere! The inside is super cool, open kitchen, bright colors. The amount of tables is slightly limited, I imagine they do a lot of to go orders. I ordered the my fathers dragon (Prosciutto, ham, brie, pate, fig spread, on baguette) it was ok. For something with all of these bold flavors I seemed to only get Brie, pâté, and fig. It was this earthly, jammy sandwich. Which was good just felt sort of one note. My wife on the other hand got the Henny Penny (Fried chicken, lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, teriyaki mayo, on a burger bun). Wow, this is the fried chicken sandwich you should be fighting for. They could run a food truck that just sold this and they would make millions. We both ordered drinks, I had the iced Vietnamese coffee on nitro (very good, extremely smooth) (Again just sell this down in eastern prom!) and wife had the Thai iced tea on nitro. Also really really really good. Fun menu, great drinks, clearly folks that love what they do and it shows in their restaurant. If I could insert a meme it would just be picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger saying, "i'll be back"

Yelp
Surprisingly great find. Was spending the day with my son and we wanted to take sandwiches with us to Fort Williams. The menu is a variety sandwiches names after well known children's nursery rhymes and stories. They have Vegan options and most items on the menu are labeled GF which is always a plus when it comes to sandwiches! My son ordered the Little red riding hood. Bacon, Turkey, Avocado, lettuce, cheddar cheese, spicy Mayo on multi grain bread! He said it was "very tasty" I ordered the Mother Goose, Turkey, arugula, tomato, pesto, provolone cheese, balsamic glaze on rustic bread. Was pressed as a panini! Both labeled GF. Can't wait to go back and try the others!

Yelp
Funny story. I was at Three of Strong Spirits with my husband and was using Yelp to figure out where to get food. When I mentioned Indy's the server turned around and said "I heard you mention Indy's, I go there all the time and it's delicious". The decision was immediately made. Indy's is on Route One which is super convenient and they have parking. It's a cozy spot where you order at the counter and the menu is a physical menu and not posted behind the person at the counter. Being an indecisive person I fully appreciate not being put under that sort of pressure. I think they do this because the menu is fairly large. They have breakfast sandwiches that sound and look awesome plus to-go salads, premade sandos and pastries. Quite a few people were picking up takeout but my husband and I dined-in. I sat on the comfy, distressed, leather couch with the menu for a couple of minutes and picked a sandwich and decided my husband and I also needed to split the chicken wings. We found a table and his local beer and my local boozy sweet pea kombucha were brought to us soon after. Unfortunately our drinks had small bubbles along the inside of the glass which means the glass is dirty and essentially making your drink more flat. That's the reason for the -1 star. Our food came out freshly made and piping hot. My sandwich was cut in half whereas my husband's fried chicken sandwich was on a roll. He found the chicken sandwich was difficult to eat because the fried chicken was 2 small pieces on the roll instead of 1 pounded piece. Because of this he had to eat the sandwich quickly and it still fell apart. My #6 sandwich had turkey, avocado, bacon, spicy mayo, lettuce, tomato and melted cheese and was awesome. In fact, my husband declared he's getting it next time. The fried chicken wings are where it's at. They're fried to perfection and super crispy, l wish you could choose sauces to toss them in my holy mackerel, they are delicious on their own. My husband and I already want to visit again.

Yelp
It's a fun clean place with excellent sandwiches. We ate in, there's limited seating but enough. We had a lobster roll Henny penny and a caul cauliflower sandwich - really really excellent.

Yelp
this place is absolutely fantastic. The sandwiches are tasty and simple and perfect for lunch if you don't want greasy fast food but rather healthy sandwiches this is the place for you. The inside is clean, happy and friendly as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I went for the first time today because I just started working in the area and... I knew it looked good but wow! I was incredibly impressed and look forward to going back and trying several others that I couldn't decide between!

David M.

Yelp
Looking for a place to grab a quick bite before we got our day started. Drove by this place once and after venturing out a few more minutes we ended back here. Folks, don't pass this place up. Breakfast items are simple and delicious. Prices very reasonable- my wife and I both had the regular egg and cheese sandwich. She added avocado and I added sausage. Very tempted to get the XL sandwich which had everything but went with my better judgment. Maybe next time i am in Maine i will get the XL.

Yelp
So happy I stopped at Indy's for a sandwich and a coffee today! I enjoyed a Vietnamese iced coffee and fried chicken sandwich. I dined in about 30 min before closing and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The chef even helped a patron jump his car! You don't see that everyday. First off the Vietnamese iced coffee was the perfect blend of sweetness and caffeine. The sandwich was the stand out! Wow! Can't wait to try more from their menu. The bun was toasted on the outside perfectly and so soft on the inside which was a great juxtaposition to the perfectly fried white chicken meat, tomato, lettuce and delicious sauce. I was licking my fingers! Don't forget to grab a couple napkins. Will definitely recommend this spot to others and be back. I love seeing new businesses like this outside of the peninsula (where there's actually parking!). They put thought and time into their ambiance / aesthetic and their merchandise is also so cute. Way to knock it out of the park Indy's!

Yelp
Excellent, delicious sandwiches and fantastic service! The younger woman who was working the register has got the BEST energy! Service was sit-down restaurant speed, 20+ minutes for food to come out, which would kinda suck if you were running in real quick for lunch. So call/order ahead if that's the case. Onto the food: so good! Try the coffee. All of them. The Nitro Cold Brew Thai Coffee... I wish Yelp allowed swearing because the soft version just doesn't drive the flavor home but, here it goes: Holy fudge, that's some gosh darn good coffee!! So sweet. So delicious. I had the Little Red Riding Hood: delicious. My husband (who doesn't do veggies but was trying to be healthy-er) had the Thumbelina and really liked it. I will be back, often.

Paul K.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch returning from up north in Maine back to Massachusetts. We both had Little Red Riding Hoods. They were both excellent and reasonably priced. The service was fast and cordial. Everyone was extremely friendly. The seats are comfortable and the room is pleasant. Note: the spicy mayonnaise is accurately named.

Yelp
Heard about this place from coworkers and decided to check it out. First, it was immaculate. There was space for eating in but I was doing a pick up. I ordered the Tam and Cam and it was a flavor treat. The other selection was a Mother Goose with avocado which was given a thumbs up by my daughter. What a gem of a sandwich shop. The service was quick, efficient, and personable.

Yelp
Love this place! Unique menu, great food and nice service. Limited seating but an awesome place for breakfast and unique sandwiches. GF and vegan options!

emily h.

Yelp
A little funky snadwhcih shop we stumbled on. Overall good. Loved the nitro Thai tea! I had a turkey sandwhich with arugula, cheese, pesto and balsamic. Start was friendly. A couple places to sit as well. Very busy
google avatar

Rina A.

Yelp
This place is small, but I love the decorations they have for hoilday spirit. They have their own parking lot, so you can pull right in easily. They have a few different areas where you can sit and eat inside too. The menu has a variety of different sandwhichs to pick from and some great combinations. When you walk in, it brings you right to the cashier to order. We were greeted with a smile and helped instantly. Our orders came out fast and were brought over to us. The sandwhichs were warmed and smothered with toppings. I love how big/thick the fried chicken sandwhich was. It has a delicious fried crunchy coating. Both sandwhichs were smothered with sauce too. I just wish the orders would come with some kind of side, though (chips, fries, coleslaw, ect). The food was delicious and would come back to get it again or try others.

Yelp
The mega bomb delicious! I had the Henny Penny and fries and they did not disappoint. Caution - the sandwich came out super hot but very very tasty.

Yelp
Found this place on a very quick whim, and let me tell you what, so worth it! The truffle salt fries are amazing! The "Cuban", so good!
google avatar

Vincent J.

Yelp
This was a to go order and I had the Henny penny and Mother Goose. The honey penny sandwich had a great presentation and good sauce. Chicken was overly fried and kind of dry. Mother Goose sandwich was pretty average and nothing too special. Pricing slightly on the higher side.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Great spot for breakfast sandwiches! Nitro Thai tea was amazing. We had an egg and cheese with avocado and a spinach and feta. The soft buns made the sandwich, so flavorful and tender. Can't wait to go back and try lunch. The inside is so fun and nicely decorated. Love the magnet poetry. And the staff was great! Very welcoming. Order at the counter and find a table, so just a really nice relaxed vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not even a sandwich person, but both of the sandwiches that I've had here have been suburp. They also have good Thai and Vietnamese coffee. Yum!

Carolyn H.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches and fast service. We had the Red Riding Hood and Tuna Panini special

Yelp
My husband and I go to Indy's usually once a month after my doctors appointment down the road.. 10/10 highly recommend!!! We've had both lunch + breakfast and we usually try something new on the menu each time! The fries are delish, the staff is very nice and even though it's a cozy little place there's usually a couple seats open. Henny Penny, Mother Goose and Little Red Riding Hood are my favs so far!
google avatar

Michele J.

Yelp
Nice new sandwich shop in South Portland on Main Street. Fun sandwich names, cool ingredient combinations and daily specials. Some beer on tap, canned wine and cider. For a new place lots of traffic by customers already done in or take out
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, nice people, order outs are always ready on time. Fresh food, great sandwiches.

Yelp
What a Gem!!! This was recommended by a friend and wow did it sure deliver!! The variety of choices was excellent!! The sandwiches were so tasty and flavorful!! Both my wife's choice and mine were excellent!! I had the red riding hood and she had my father's dragon. Service was quick and excellent!! To top it off the oatmeal raisin cookie was delicious and we should have gotten more!!

Yelp
Super unique flavors - amazingly fresh and tasty!! Darling little place with friendly staff ... kudos to the creative minds and hands that craft these delicious sandwiches!!

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch today as I was hungry and wasn't feeling fast food. After looking through the menu I settled on the henny penny. The sandwich was absolutely perfect through every bite! The fried chicken was crispy and juicy! The pickled red onions the perfect amount of acid and the teriyaki mayo was the perfect touch! Can't wait to go back and try something else!

michael k.

Yelp
Food and service were great. Best sandwiches we've had. Highly recommended. Amble parking and seating.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich of my life! I ordered the Kai Kata and added spicy mayo. Served fresh and hot! Absolutely devoured.

Yelp

Yelp
This place is amazing! I love the thumbelina sandwich, it is fantastic. The shop itself also has really cool decor.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and glad we did. This is a great addition to the Portland scene. The sandwiches were tasty and well-prepared. I am sure we will be back here in the future.

Yelp
If I could rate 6 stars, I would. Staff were incredible, the shop is adorable and the food... I had the Tam and Cam, and it was a damn fine sandwich, but my wife had the Henny Penny and it was earth shattering. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had, and I consider myself a connoisseur. The family next to us saw it and ordered one to go after their meal. I considered waiting around for a few hours until dinner to get some more. Fried Chicken Sandwich 10/10 Banh Mi 8/10
google avatar

Madelyn S.

Yelp
I love their Vietnamese nitro tea !I came in several months ago and got it. I've been craving it since. I came back today for the intro tea !The sandwiches are soo good too. The staff is all very friendly. Highly recommend !

Yelp
What used to be Simple Simon's has clearly taken steroids, and received some amazing plastic surgery! This place is amazing! Now, when I try a place that has only been open less than a week, I expect some minor issues. Whether it is long hold times, extended wait times, less than stellar food, confused staff, or any other litany of items that can go wrong. However, this place was, and I don't say this lightly... PERFECT! I meant to get here on opening day, I wanted that coveted First Review, but sadly my week got away from me. I made it here today, Friday, four days after opening (and thankfully I am still gonna get that First Review!!). I was on my way back to SoPo, and called our order ahead, a nice lady answered the phone on the first ring, and pleasantly took the info. We tried a Lion and the Mouse (a cuban), and the curry with egg and fried chicken. I asked for it to be ready in 30 minutes, and she gave me my total and I was on my way. I arrive in approximately 27 minutes, and head inside. It was gorgeously redone, and the lady at the counter had a huge smile on her face as she welcomed me in. My order was ready, I paid, and I head out the door. Flawless service within the first week, well done. Made it home roughly 5 minutes later, and we dug in. My wife's cuban was delicious, the pickles truly made it, they were so yummy and thick. When it comes to cuban sandwiches, Nonesuch River Brewing truly has the king, but this makes a very nice queen. And the curry? Holy flaming flamingos batman, I never need to order from any other Asian restaurant ever again!! (I mean, I still WILL, but the fact is that I don't need to). The flavor was amazing, the rice perfectly sticky, the chicken crunchy and with nicely melted cheese on top, and the egg was perfectly over medium. I ate every bite and was sad when there wasn't more!! I will not be waiting super long before being back. Think Monday... as soon as they open... and then again for lunch.... and I wish dinner! My only complaints are as follows: 1) they are only open until 3! I need this food morning and night! 2) they don't open until 8! I typically eat breakfast well before 8, so I wish it was more like 6, but hey, I will happily wait till 8 on Monday so I can give this a try. That's it, not much else to complain about! I don't say this without thought, and I know it has only been one time... but this may be my new favorite spot. I just hope it last's longer, and is more popular, than SS was before this. This stuff is too good to let go.

Yelp
Such a great addition to the often lackluster food scene in Maine. This place is amazing. The Thumbelina and the spam sandwich were both top notch, and the fries were solid. Inside is cool plus they have beer and wine. Amazing spot
