Essential Restaurants for Casual and Work Lunches in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"It may be a cafe (serving Cafe Moto beans), but Influx is also a magnet for the midday lunch set, especially at its airy Little Italy and North Park locations. On the food side, they specialize in both breakfast and lunch, with simple and well-assembled sandwiches, bagels, and salads. The feta sandwich tastes like a Greek-ish salad between bread, with hummus, feta cheese, sliced red onion, cucumber, tomato, and mixed greens. A few turkey, ham, and tofu varieties means various diets and cravings can get satisfied." - Roxana Popescu

Golden Hill’s Favorite Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"Influx’s Broadway location set the pace for Golden Hill’s renewal in the early aughts with its design-oriented digs. Today, you can still grab your locally roasted coffee or a fresh-made pastry anytime of day." - Mario A. Cortez

Ah-mazing turkey breast sandwiches! 😍 Turkey Nr 1 on focaccia is my fav, sooo good. Everything is extremely fresh, extremely clean and you can taste the freshness and cleanliness lol. Sandwiches are affordable too. Great coffee and super friendly staff, great vibes altogether. I see plenty of folks working from here, so that’s another confirmation that this place is legit. Plenty of seating indoor and outdoor, parking may have to be done on side streets.

Google
This has been my go to place for coffee for years. Easy to get to with efficient service. The coffee is decent but not stellar, and sometimes if I get a latte it’s not hot enough. Great baked goods.

Earlier this morning I took my car into a new and highly recommended mechanic. I will post a review on that later. I did not get to eat anything before leaving to take the car in, so I walked around the local South Park neighborhood in search of coffee and breakfast. Although there are a lot of restaurants in this area, most of them were not open and do not open until 11 AM. Came into influx café and in reviewing their menu decided to try the bagel scramble and an americano. What can I say? OMG. That bagel was so good I think I died and went to heaven LOL. It was perfectly prepared and a very generous size portion for the price. In other words the price was very reasonable for the serving of food that I received. Every bite of that sandwich was tasty and wonderful . I may have to keep bringing my car here so that I can have a reason to come here for breakfast LOL. And, I have not yet mentioned that the Americano tasted great as well. This restaurant uses solar power to roast their coffee beans and I appreciate that because in addition to providing excellent food and coffee, they are working to care for the environment. When you are in so far and looking for coffee or breakfast, stop at influx café and check them out!! I highly recommend them and I will be back.

Google
Their prices have skyrocketed since the first of the year. What a shame. Roughly $6.75 for an iced latte with soy milk not including tip of course for the non-smiling/ barely friendly employees. They brew cafe moto which is my favorite, but sadly, I won't be returning. I can't stomach the cost. It used to be $4. 50 or 4.75 I can't remember and no charge for soy milk.

Google
Everything was better than it looks! Coffee so clean and pure, freshest. And those sandwiches are FANtastic with a capital FAN, cause I am one! Coming back, see you here folks!

Google
It was decent. Let’s talk about the bad first, to get it out of the way. Someone in my party got a bagel scramble that I was able to try. It was an underwhelming bagel-and-egg sandwich that most people can pretty easily recreate at home. I ordered an iced americano, and the roast was a little dark for me. There was a little citrus, but the bitterness was overwhelming. It kind of tasted like an orange peal. Cafés that heavily promote their syrupy coffee drinks tend to over roast their espresso, since the harsh bitter taste of really dark coffee is the only coffee flavor that can pierce through the intense sweetness of all the added sugar, and this is probably why the espresso was so dark at Influx. As a final nit picky thing, the bathrooms are hard to find, but the staff is more than willing to help you. Which leads us into the good. The costumer service was great. The staff answered all of my questions (and helped me find the bathroom) with a smile on their faces. I ordered the traditional bagel (w/o tomatoes). It was really good, and although it was expensive, I’d order it again. The aforementioned party member ordered the iced brewed coffee, which was not bad. It had the same citrus taste, but without the overpowering bitterness of the americano. The citrus was not clear enough to pick out specific flavor notes though.

Google
Pretty nice place, but its niceness ruins by the non-smiling employees. They look like they don't even try to hide that they hate working here. Some people try very hard to get them to smile, but only a few succeed. They don't have a problem laughing with each other, though. Maybe my 5th time in here and my experience is the same every time.

Google
I’m writing this review as I sit in Influx for probably the 58th time. I have frequented this coffee shop every time i’m in San Diego over the past three years, and let me tell you, they are consistently good. Their roasts are strong and affordable. The service is always pleasant and friendly (they always welcome you in when you walk through the door, for example). The atmosphere is super relaxing and plenty of space to sit, including outside. I recommend the orange cushion chairs though, they’re a lot more comfy. Did I mention affordable? I can’t remember the last time I had a large 16oz for $4, especially in North Park. The only downside is having to use the restroom outside, but that’s not a huge deal and it’s always clean. I love you Influx!!!!!

Yelp
Despite some reivews alleging otherwise, I have never had a rude employee encounter here. In fact, several of the morning crew have been extra kind as I struggled with Apple Pay. They never made me feel dumb. It can get quite busy in the late morning, but the line moves. As it is extremely close to my home, I frequent it often on my morning walks. I would give them a 4.5 if possible.

Yelp
The coffee was very good, vanilla latte wasn't too sweet. Nice and hot with good taste. Friendly service and some comfortable seating if you can keep other people's dogs from humping your leg. Literally. One rogue dog owner allowed her canine to roam around long-leashed while she buried her attention in her laptop. Meanwhile, little Fido was on the prowl and his leash attached to a seat leg wasn't stopping his libido. The food is just ok IMO. The gluten free bowl was disappointing but points for the effort. The bagel scramble with cheese was filling and hot, but bland. Ask for some hot sauce. The fruit and granola yogurt cup was good, the yogurt is plain Greek variety not vanilla.

Yelp
Delicious! Lots of space and tables to work during the work day. Love the pba and iced chai. Wide range of open face bagels for different flavor preferences. Fast Wi-Fi!

Yelp
Used to live in the neighborhood so came all the time around 2011ish. I had a strange craving this morning for the mozz 2. So I drove the 8 miles to get it. I also got a decaf blended one and a bagel scramble to go so I can munch through the day. Shop is still cute and looks like it got a lite facelift since I was last here. Yummy!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
The perfect spot to have a coffee and a bite to eat! Had an oat iced latte and the Mozz 1 sandwich. Both were very good! I also brought my dog and they were very dog friendly. Even gave her a treat! The outdoor seating area is spacious and plentiful. Restrooms are accessible from the exterior but a key is required

Yelp
I've been to this Influx a few times and have always had great experiences. The coffee is always good and so is their food. There is ample seating inside and outside which is great as it can get crowded at times. Overall, a great local coffee shop in North Park!
google avatar

Yelp
Hi....Just a note to say how wonderful Influx (North Park) is. The menu is varied, the food delicious, the clientele friendly, and the place immaculate. But the real shining stars are the staff who are as sweet as the brownies and mochas they serve. They are prompt, eager to satisfy their customers, friendly, and very funny. You won't be disappointed.

Alison W.

Yelp
This place is like Cheers for me... they know my name, they know my order. Always the best quality. Always genuine and lovely. When I was in grad school it was a great Saturday morning option for me to get some work done. (I enjoy being near the hustle and bustle when I study.) The food options (breakfast AND lunch) are family favorites. My kids love the breakfast bagel ("eggy sandwich" in our house); and I have a hankering for the Mozzarella #1 at least once a week. (Add the olive tapenade... you're welcome.) And don't miss the desserts! You'll be glad you grabbed one to take with you!

Yelp
I came here on a date- he picked the spot and immediately won points for not picking Sbux. We didn't hang around Influx too long opting to take our coffee over to the park to enjoy. It's a great little walk and a great casual date option. Or you can stay around Influx! They had plenty of seating and were lively on a Sunday morning without it feeling overly packed/crowded. My latte was pretty good- nothing memorable, but I didn't need a "wow factor" coffee. Just some caffeine. They forgot to get my date his drink so we were there a little longer than we expected,. When he pointed it out they were quick to apologize and get it to him. Not a big deal, but speak up if you feel overlooked. I'm sure I'll be back next time I want a coffee for the park!

Yelp
It was a real Jazzy Morning before work. Stopped in for a Bagel and an Iced Coffee. It was everything I wanted and everything I needed.
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding food and great service. My girlfriend introduced me to this place because she love there raspberry muffins. So I go out of my way and get her thoses but lately they haven't had them which is still cool, it might be seasonal and I like there blended drink and it is made just right every time. I'm glad we go there often when we are in the area.

Yelp
I love Influx, they serve Cafe Moto coffee which is my favorite roaster in San Diego, they have tasty bagels (and salads and sandwiches), the atmosphere is very chill and quiet (great place to sit with your laptop and get some work done), lots of seating both indoors and outdoors, and everyone working here is so darn nice! It will take a little time to get your coffee and food so hopefully you aren't in a huge rush, but it's worth the wait.
google avatar

Tita G.

Yelp
8:30 and they are out of croissants????? They didn't have any other bread to make a sandwich other than bagels???? When I asked her for other options she told me to go to another restaurant. Great customer service. Too bad I live near this place and will not be stepping in again.

Taylor B.

Yelp
Definitely one of my new favorite WFH coffee shops! Lots of seating, both inside and outside, strong Wi-Fi, and great food and drink options. I ordered the iced caramel latte and the traditional bagel which were both delicious.
google avatar

Lexy E.

Yelp
I decided to pop in here for some coffee on a walk around the neighborhood with my dog. It's a small place with a good amount of seating outside. I ordered an iced almond milk latte with sugar free caramel. It was really good! The espresso is strong tasting but not too strong. This is in a nice area as well, with a lot of nice streets to stroll down as you enjoy your coffee!
google avatar

Lia F.

Yelp
My fave sandwich is tofu #3. I wish they had a few more vegan options for salads and pastry items. Overall, a great place to get some work done and caffeinate. Great wifi.
google avatar

Warren R.

Yelp
This is a great cafe. They have food choices I really enjoy. Food of substance instead of just bagels or muffins. The Chai is really excellent here. I get it with oat milk hot or iced. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Lyn S.

Yelp
This coffee shop is located across the street from my hair salon. I ordered a coffee and a muffin, and it was ok, nothing special. The customer service was ok. The people working here are not happy at all. They took my order, but no one even called me to pick up my coffee. I had to find it, and it had been sitting on the counter for five minutes. Surprisingly, a man came in with his pup, and the person making the coffee made it a point to go and give the puppy a snack and pet it. I am a furry baby mom, and I love that at least the dogs are getting good service. However, I did not see her wash her hands afterward.
google avatar

KJ C.

Yelp
The food and coffee is great, but they allow customers to not only bring their dogs into the store, but allow dogs into the food prep area. They also pet the dogs while serving food. I love pets, but I don't want dog hair, fleas, ticks, worms etc. in my food just because customers don't have common curtesy.

John L.

Yelp
Came to have a nice breakfast, heard great things about their croissants. Was really looking forward to it but I get there I order and wait for a while only to have them come out later and tell me they have no croissant ... On a Sunday morning... Huh? ‍

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
Food is good, coffee isn't the best unless you're getting something iced or blended, and the service is so lacking it's painful. Idk why I tip here every time. I hate that it's the closest thing to me sometimes because I just know it's hit or miss.

Paige V.

Yelp
I used to like this place but my last two experiences have not been good. :( They are always out of of something / everything ! The previous time I went, I walked in and no one greeted me and everyone was on their phone. I looked at the menu for a few minutes and finally was ready to order. They told me they ran out of what I wanted. I decided to order something else, they were also out of that. I tried to order ANOTHER thing, they were also out of that. I wish they told me ahead of time to save myself the time. I finally decided to order a salad which they had most of the ingredients for. When I finally got my salad, the person who gave it to me had such a bad attitude. Overall the experience was bad. I tried to give it another chance and the more recent time I went they were out of their bread and bagels. I can no longer go here because I never know what they'll have available. huge bummer.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea!! Service was outstanding and made my tea a combination of a few flavors! The Vietnamese coffee was really good they also serve it hot which I've never had before.

Yelp
So randomly my wife woke up wanting to go to a coffee house where the coffee comes in an actual mug rather than a paper cup. What came to mind first was Influx since I had been to the one in Golden Hill years ago and distinctly remember the coffee in a mug with a pretty design. sadly after our dining experience I remembered why it had been years since my last visit. I love to support small businesses but more so, small businesses that appreciate my business! The service we received here was probably the most off putting I have had in a long time! So cold and unwelcoming. Like everything we did, said, and ordered was an inconvenience to them. I ordered the bagel scramble which consisted of bagel, egg, and choice of jack or swiss cheese. I asked for the jack cheese and added bacon for $1.50. When it came, there were several eggs shells (large pieces) that I pulled out. Not too terrible, kind of reminds me that its made from real eggs so not something to complain about since I didn't bite into it. The bacon that was $1.50... they put 1 1/2 piece on my sandwich. The cheese was... oh wait, not there! They forgot the cheese. Thankfully I didn't pay extra for that. My wife had a better experience than I did and thankfully so because we went here for her. She ordered the Feta 3 which was a veggie patty, feta cheese, arugula, tomato, and an olive tapenade on focaccia bread. Hers was extremely salty but so delicious! I remembered having just about the same issues with the breakfast bagel at the Golden Hill location and the same with the employees there. I would love to give this another try though. The focaccia bread and sandwich were good and just about every picture of anything on the focaccia bread looked delicious!

Yelp
This is my favorite coffeehouse where I come to read, write, and think. They also serve the best chai tea lattes in town. They brew their own chai tea, then add milk. Definitely has more caffeine than chai lattes at any other place in town. They also have a great variety of sandwiches, whether you're a meat eater, vegetarian, or vegan. Be sure to order your sandwich on focaccia bread. My go-to is the Moz One -- mozzarella, basil, tomato, and balsamic -- on focaccia. Add bacon if you're feeling decadent.
google avatar

Paulina F.

Yelp
A consistently fantastic experience - good coffee and really tasty sandwiches, salads and bakery. The lemon bars, lox bagel sandwiches and Turkey on focaccia sandwiches have been my go-to's for over 10 years. They are not an espresso drink artisanal place, but they are as solid and delightful of a coffee shop / cafe experience San Diego has - we're lucky to have them.
google avatar

Spencer H.

Yelp
This is a pretty standard coffee shop/cafe. There's a food menu with some breakfast and lunch items, along with a small assortment of pastries. The prices are reasonable, and the service is alright. I ordered the bagel scramble, which is a bagel, egg, and cheese. For a breakfast, it's fine, but not the best thing I have ever eaten. The coffee itself is fine, pretty tasty and dark, and served hot.
google avatar

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Hubby and I've been wanting to try this place out since we live so close. Parking wasn't too bad. It was crowded inside and look or reminded me of Starbucks because people were on their laptop. Hubby got the blended #3 with a pecan bar; I got a Vietnamese Coffee a long with a buttered croissant. I thought that blended #3 was a bit too sweet. My Vietnamese coffee was too bitter... I'm so sad that it didn't tasted the way I hoped it to be because I try other Vietnamese coffee at other coffee places, but it can't beat Vietnamese coffee in OC. Haha I fell in love with the buttered croisant. It was so nice and flaky. Definitely found my place for buttered croissants in SD!!!
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
I had the traditional- toasted bagel topped with cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, red onion and capers. I thought that the open faced bagel was delicious, I was very pleased with the pairing of the items and I'm looking forward to trying more items . To add this place is vegan friendly which is awesome for a lot of people . They also do breakfast, Italian sodas, coffees, chai tea. Over all a very good and a fresh choice if you ask me .
google avatar

Ivan C.

Yelp
Influx is a great coffee spot in North Park right next to a Modern Times Brewery. They serve beans from Cafe Moto, and quality of their drinks is great. It's also great for studying or getting work done because of the ample outlets and seating. They have Italian specialty drinks. They're not but on latte art but the ship has great aesthetics: wooden walls and red seats. Definitely recommend for peeps who want to get some work done or simply come in for a pick-me-up.
google avatar

jessica m.

Yelp
The shop is small, aesthetically pleasing, and has a friendly environment. There's outside and some indoor seating. This shop also has the sweetest people ever. I ordered from the wrong place and they were able to help me get my order as soon as possible. After I got my order, as soon as I walked outside I dropped my coffee. I left to drop off the rest of the order and I was planning to go back to buy myself another coffee. However, Juliana(I believe was her name), redid my coffee with no problems There were 2 other employees who were very sweet too. The coffee is actually good and strong. I'd gladly recommend this coffee shop anytime ! (:
google avatar

Charlie L.

Yelp
Food is ok. How can someone mess up such a simple order. I order croissant scramble with bacon with tomato and onion to go and received ham. Will not return because they can take a simple order.
google avatar

Paris L.

Yelp
Influx is my favorite North Park coffee shop! They have a great menu. My personal favorite is the gluten free bowl with veggie sausage. They have something for everyone from croissants to salads. The service is always excellent. Environment is cute, with indoor and outdoor easting options and a good view for people watching, if you like that. Im sad that they are closed during COVID, but hey it's giving me time to finally review one of my favorite local businesses. Hope the staff is staying safe and can't wait to come back!

Erin B.

Yelp
This is our go-to Saturday morning breakfast. We love the blueberry scones, bagel scrambles on everything bagels and a Blended One for a tasty coffee treat.

Zayn D.

Yelp
Great coffee and food and overall looks nice... the only problem I had was the customer service they didn't seem to enjoy being there. When my bagel was done the dude just tossed it in front of me I said thank u and he just walked away didn't say anything. Good food and coffee but not friendly.
google avatar

Trina D.

Yelp
What a cute coffee shop! This gem of a neighborhood coffee shop was introduced to me by Mari H. on my last morning of YSBSD. We slept in and packed up our belongings to head over to Influx and Perla Tacos. Influx had all sorts of caffeinated drinks. I went with the Vietnamese coffee and a croissant. I asked if they could warm up my croissant a little and they happily obliged. I think I received one of the ones meant for a sandwich since it was sliced through the middle. No worries though, I enjoyed it very much. The numbers you get from the cashier are amusing blocks of wood with numbers on them. The service is great and the coffee is fantastic.
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
Turkey 1 is my favorite and I've not ventured much further than that yet. Make sure you get it on focaccia because the bread is flavorful and really elevates the sandwich. I've also had the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with capers and iced coffee. It's a great place to get a light breakfast or a satisfying sandwich, which is perfect for this area of North Park. The place can get pretty rowdy on the weekend, but there's also outdoor seating which is great if you can snag a spot.
google avatar

Grey D.

Yelp
I really like this spot. Can grab food and a coffee and get great interaction with people and their pups! Which is my favorite. I usually get the turkey 1 on focaccia bread with the Vietnamese iced coffee. It had a good ambience for studying and just casual hang outs.
google avatar

Courtny A.

Yelp
The service was great and they were all very kind. My drink however was not good at all. I got a dirty chai and it did not have a good taste or after taste. My husband liked his cappuccino but I was disappointed with my drink. Maybe it was just what I ordered but probably won't go there again.
google avatar

Tong J.

Yelp
This is such an amazing place!! Great place for studying!! This drink is not on the menu but I asked if the barista could add some foam on top of my cold brew, and he did and he even added some cocoa powder on top for me!!!! It tastes amazing!!!
google avatar

Eddie P.

Yelp
Literally the worst coffee shop I've ever been to. Employees are not friendly. I did not enjoy my experience. I tipped our barista 20% and she was ungrateful. Seemed as if she couldn't be bothered to serve her customers. Later I was scolded for resting my feet on the railing outside while I was enjoying my drink and people watching with a friend. I've been to the other Influx in Little Italy and it was much better. Save yourself the trouble, go elsewhere. Unless you're into it, this pretentious, unfriendly atmosphere is weak.
google avatar

Eileen G.

Yelp
I'm giving influx in north park 5 stars for a few reasons 1. Great space. It's a little loud when there's a lot of people, but it's a great meeting spot and great to get work done. The WiFi is pretty fast for a public space. 2. Great service. I come pretty often and so does my husband and everyone who works there has been great. 3. Great sandwiches and pretty decent coffee. It's not fancy coffee like Holsem or Dark horse, but it's always fresh and I haven't been disappointed. Their bagel sandwiches are my favorite place in North Park. I usually get the veggie bagel and a large coffee. I recently tried an iced vanilla latte and it was delicious 4. It's consistently good and not overpriced. I'm a creature of habit, but I always appreciate consistency in flavor and service. Some places I'm not always a frequent visitor because I'm not sure what I'm going to get. I always know what I'm getting when I come here and usually recommend this place for breakfast or meetings
google avatar

Lia S.

Yelp
Did not like this location. The tall hipster guy working the register/bringing food scowled the whole time, didn't say thank you, or make any attempt to interact like a decent human being with any of the customers. Ordered a breakfast croissant with coffee. The croissant was greasy and nothing like the beauties baked across the street. Asked for Jack cheese, got Swiss. Dead flies in the window and the succulents at each little table were dying. Wow, really? Takes a lot of neglect to kill plants like that. Obviously no general care for this location. Will not be back. Go to Cardamom cafe for MUCH better service and quality of breakfast.
google avatar

Chhai M.

Yelp
In brief (like my visit), the croissant melt was amazing, the bagel with cream cheese was overpriced, and their cappuccino was decent, but a bit too much foam for my liking. This all would have been a longer visit (and review), if the server didn't have such a douche attitude. I nope'd out of there as soon as I got my food.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Have never had a good espresso at this location. They have a great machine, but it's either not calibrated correctly or the baristas aren't trained on how to use it. Shots have been burnt, black, and highly bitter. Have never gotten an espresso w crema. Often a line out the door in the morning - so they've got the location and business going for them. But the baristas seem uninterested in moving It along. One of them this morning (Tues 8/29) was acting like he absolutely hated being there serving customers. So that made waiting 20 mins for amateur coffee drinks super fun. Guess what? Your coffee isn't nearly good enough for the attitude.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Yum Cold brew coffee is strong AF but delicious Love their bagel sandwiches and croissants
google avatar

Danny P.

Yelp
Good sandwiches, bagels, salads and croissants. Decent coffee. Service and staff are the worst. In the three (?) years it's been open this location has had a lot of employee turnaround. There is one or two front of house staff that are great but the rest are horrible.
google avatar

Dale S.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite / most preferred coffee shop in North Park. Small, modern, and because I think it is not as well known (yet) as Holsem, Lestat's, Young Hickory, etc., the place doesn't get packed -- or at least whenever I go -- so there is plenty of room for tables. I mainly come here to get work done for a few hours. As I said above, finding a table was never a problem for me. Each table has its own outlet, and wifi is pretty good. You gotta ask the workers for the wifi password, btw! I just really enjoy the vibe of this place. Quiet, comfy, and all you need is the background noise of 30th Street to really have that "coffee shop" type of vibe. Honestly, I'm not really a coffee type of guy, but I did try their Vietnamese iced coffee (I meant business that day lmao) and it got me goin'! I also tried their bagel breakfast sandwich (forgot what it's called on the menu), and it was really good and filling for a good price! I'm not sure why others complained about their staff. I never had a bad experience with their staff or service. Overall, good vibes and a nice place to do some work or chill over coffee. Another plus, Modern Times is just next door! So if you're tryna get some work done, it's nice to have a beer as a little break. ;)

Yelp
I was early for my tattoo appointment last weekend and needed something for a long tattoo session. This place was close by so I decided to try it out. Turns out it's a very friendly and quality coffee shop with amazing breakfast bagels and other food for a stop in the morning! Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
This is the strangest place I've ever been in. It was like an office. Everyone inside and outside was sitting alone at a computer, no one was talking, so weird. The two employees behind the counter did not greet me, one merely moved behind the cash register to take my order. My cappuccino was good. The breakfast I would call honest food, but not particularly flavorful. Service was good. No response from the employees when I left. A great place to go if you're feeling antisocial. I wonder if it's a millennial thing.
