The 15 Best Restaurants near Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama | Eater

"This Irish pub in the heart of Dixie is a staple for many UA students. It sports all the features of the traditional college bar: wood paneling and exposed brick, walls (and ceilings) decorated with sports memorabilia, and signs for Irish brands and local businesses. There are local touches too, like the 21st birthday stickers slapped on surfaces around the bar (meant to bring good luck to the birthday celebrator), and the TVs are eternally tuned to Crimson Tide games. Whether it’s for drink specials ($5 Irish marys) or a quick bite (try the shepherd’s pies), the Innisfree and its friendly staff offer Southern hospitality with an orange, white, and green twist." - Jen Bowman

Had a great time time dancing until I attempted to close my tab. The girl at the bar informed me that my tab had already been closed. They took and kept my card when I arrived and gave it to a person whose name didn't resemble mine in the least. When I insisted that I didn't have my card, the girl said I looked like I was on drugs. So... regrettably I don't recommend this place as much as I would like.

Fun place to hang and meet new people at. Late nights can get crowded, expect to pay cover.

Went here for Halloween festivities on Saturday and had a blast! It was well decorated and the drink we got was tasty! Our bartender was dressed as a nurse and she was very kind to my fiancée and I as we talked to her about our nursing careers! We danced outside for a little while and then wandered inside for the music there. I loved the different music offered. Inside felt more like an EDM vibe and outside felt more like trendy rap and pop. The bathrooms were clean too from what I can remember. I would go back to Innisfree! Great location close to many restaurants too!

Great bar to hang out with good music.

Google
The security guard at the door charged us full price to get in. $20 a piece just for them to close in less than 30 min. Then he told us we should have looked at the time.. now usually I have a great time but that service right there... def discouraged me from going back. All he cared about was getting our money. He probably didn't even put it in the door fee money anyway. If he was broke he should have just said that

Google
The bouncer outside wouldn’t let me and my boyfriend in (25 and 21). Said he didn’t think our IDs are fake, but it was his discretion and he felt uncomfortable letting us in. This place is not LGBT friendly so save your money for somewhere more welcoming!

If you want to come and party in Birmingham, this definitely is one of the places. My band plays here on regular basis and it gets packed around 11:30 PM and it stays that way past 1 AM. Like I said if you want to party on weekends, this is the place to be!

Google
mostly a college crowd with a mix of older adults. Good music and nice atmosphere. Great place to go dance. Drinks are drinks and it can take a while to get service based on the crowd, especially Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday. Would recommend if you're looking for lots of people and energy

Yelp
My friends and I went out to InnisFree Pub to celebrate St. Patty's Day. They had music going, drinks coming, and all around good vibes. Outside they had a food truck, which after a few drinks, my friends and I decided to grab a bite from. I ordered the "Irish Poutine." It was fries topped with gravy and "cheese curds." While the service and price were great, I was not a fan of what I ordered. The temperature of my food was slightly above warm and the cheese curds seems more like a mozzarella stick that was cut up. The gravy was bland and a bit on the salty side. While this wasn't the best meal, it was good convenient to have outside the bar!

Yelp
Employees were nice. Food was average. People in my group and the group next to use were commenting on the music being too loud.

Yelp
Innisfree is the perfect college bar scene for anyone who lives in Birmingham or the surrounding area. Most people who will be there will be in their 20s and there is no shortage of a great time. If you aren't a prep, this place definitely isn't for you. And the amount of white people who will scream the 'n word' in their favourite rap song is just astonishing, but this is still Alabama- so not surprisingly.

Yelp
This has been one of my go to hang out spots for the past couple of years. I love the option to listen to a DJ or live music. However, the lat few times I've been they've played mostly techno music. I don't have anything against it, but there should be a better mix. The bartenders are pretty good. But slammed at times. I will say they seem to work as hard as they can during rushes. The women's restroom is atrocious. There is never soap and rarely paper towels. The doors are hanging on by a thread and barely provide privacy since people can look over them. The rating could be better if the DJ played a variety and the women's restroom was cleaner and in better shape.

Lynella C.

Yelp
The fake bouncer guy let whoever he wants in the place which is not cool at all but overall the place is cool. Nice music and atmosphere.

Yelp
I used to come here way too often. It's pretty packed on Fridays and Saturdays, but I've been here during happy hour on the weekdays too with only two other people. They have both an indoor and outdoor area to hang out in and to get drinks at. You usually have to pay a cover late at night on the weekends, but I know Thursday nights are lady's nights. Just a head's up this is a bar more for meeting and talking to random 20-somethings, not necessarily a place you come after a long day at work.

Yelp
Apple maps hours said 11 am open time, safari said 4 pm open time. We showed up at 4:50 pm and the bouncer out front told us 10 more minutes; we waited until 5:30 and there was still ropes out front keeping us from entering. There are enough bars to keep us busy but if you have hours posted out front of the bar/on google/safari, I expect the bar to be open during those hours. First time in Alabama, was looking forward to this place but highly dissapointed; downloaded yelp just to place this negative review.

Yelp
In town for the weekend and this place looked fun. We will never return, and will share our experience with friends. People were rude, hands down. If you want to save yourself the trip, just think of being on Bourbon St in the French Quarter in New Orleans in between the businesses where everyone took a piss.

Yelp
"Straight" people in front of us paid $5 cover, they asked for $10 from my obviously gay friend and me. We creeped to see what happened next... straight people paid $5...

Yelp
This place is a little nostalgic to me since I brought Erin here to round out the night of our 1st date with a funk band called Excalibur. It's funny because I remember being impressed by hearing that genre of music coming from Innisfree. I've frequented the Tuscaloosa location enough to know what to expect on a typical night: Greeks, college people, chest-to-chest crowd and great people watching if you can secure a table to post up at. Not my go-to, but any place with Guinness is on my list at some point.

Yelp
Definitely has a great deal of pros and cons Pros: usually has a big crowd, good place to dance and listen to music at Cons: inside area is super cramped, lines can be a mile to get in, they kick people out more than any bar I've seen, service can be snail paces, and they charge high covers.

Yelp
Lived next to this place for two years. Bartenders do their due diligence and provide quick service. Fair deals and cover considering the mass of humanity catered to. DJ plays mixes of all the top chart songs repeating every week varying slightly depending on weeknight and special event. Go here if you're a college kid between 20-24 and want to party. If you want to make friends, make sure you have a group of people, otherwise you'll get the cold shoulder-especially if your not part of the "fratastrophy"

Yelp
Hhhmmm...I think they have an idiot magnet that attracts the crowd in this place. I been a few times, each time a leave asking myself, why do I do this to myself? It's a long narrow bar, which leads to bottle necking of people stopping traffic and causing issues. Nothing is special about the bar itself, other than they have a nice beer garden in the back. I don't recommend coming here. You will find yourself paying a cover for a below average college band and bathrooms overflowing with urine and vomit. Drinks are served in plastic cups and bartenders can do two things: serve beer and make shots. The crowd...don't get me started.

Yelp
Innisfree is so much fun!! The atmosphere is great, the drinks are good! The prices are reasonable. The DJ plays a mix of everything. Everybody is just having lots of fun and really enjoying themselves. It's a nice and safe place to go out with your friends and just have a good time. I've been here several times and I can truly say that I enjoy myself every time I go!

Yelp
Innisfree is your typical late night bar frequented by 20-somethings. It's a fun atmosphere to go and hang out late into the night. On Thursdays they have free keg beer available (tapped around 10, so it's usually gone by around 10:30! You have to jump on it fast) and karaoke. The karaoke songs are way better than I've heard at some other bars around town, so it's fun to listen and sing along. There is corn hole and a stage outside as well as pool tables and ANOTHER stage inside. Two bars to go to and in my experience, the inside one is more crowded than the outside. Thursday nights are pretty informal, everyone goes in shorts/jeans and t shirts, which I like. I always have a great time at Innisfree!

Yelp
Best staff in town, the drink prices are good especially for the area. The patio is a lot of fun especially in the spring and summer.

Yelp
Bar tender Kristen is terrible. Very slow and rude, and her drinks are awful. The atmosphere is nice, I love the back patio.
google avatar

Tad N.

Yelp
Neat place. Dark wood interior and a spacious patio out back. Every drink option you can imagine and friendly staff. It is in a great location for food and entertainment. I don't come here much but I actually want to come more often.

Yelp
Innisfree is an ok establishment on a night where you just want to have a few drinks and dance. They often get some pretty cool bands playing on their stage, and the dance floor is a fair size. The bar is pretty much what you'd find at any college-ish bar. There are no cocktail menus, but the bartenders are pretty knowledgeable if you already know what you want. They also offer darts in the back. The day this place really shines is Saint Patrick's Day, so make plans to visit then for sure.

Yelp
I accidently walked into Innisfree thinking it was Nana Funks. I took a swing on the way in at the first man I saw and instantly got thrown out. This is no Nana Funks, but I still LOVED IT. XOXO P.S. Innis free is not Nana funks P.S.S. Don't forget to hit someone while being thrown out of Innis Free

Yelp
I given this bar three opportunities to make a positive impression on me and I've left all three times asking myself why I wasted my time. This is a fine place for those who doesn't know or want better. Service is good but food is below average and pricing is slightly over priced.
google avatar

Tiger W.

Yelp
The place is packed so dont expect the best service guys. If you want to get drunk with strange women and pound shots of fireball, dance your ass off, and have an all out basic night. This is your joint

Yelp
I honestly enjoy coming to Innisfree Pub for two reasons. (1) It's the best place in Birmingham to get a delicious ice cold Guinness beer at just the right temperature. (2) I like the open back patio area and decent cover bands that frequently play at this particular Innisfree location (I'm also a fan of the Tuscaloosa location as well). By the way, stay out of the bathrooms if you can help it because it's always flooded, out of order, crowded, or in a general disarray. Also, drop in before 10 p.m. if you want to avoid a cover charge. If the bathroom was a bit better this review would have ranked at a four. Overall, just say no to the bathroom break and enjoy a drink, some music, and some friendly conversation.

Yelp
as long as you know what you're getting into, innisfree is pretty solid. yes it's chock full of young drunk people, yes it's kind of dirty, and yes they charge cover. if you are prepared for these things, you can still have a fun night and enjoy the live music, nice outdoor patio, goldentee, darts, and general people-watching. this is a place that we usually take out of town guests after dinner at FIVE, slice, or moe's - and it's possible that sometimes we are the youngest people there. and we're usually okay with that. thanks innisfree for keeping us young.

Scott H.

Yelp
Awful management. I went to pay for my drinks with a $100 bill. The bartender used the currency pen to mark it. The bill passed the test. But he refused it. Then I gave him another $100. He refused it again and told me I was giving him fake money. So then when I tried to use a debit card to pay he told "Go fuck yourself and leave my bar". This was an absolute horrible experience there. He also threatened to call the cops on me for printing counterfeit money. So sad to see incompetent people like him that can't tell what is real money.
google avatar

Yelp
Kristen is the best bartender ever. She's awesome. Go see her. Great bar. Love going there. Always a fun time
google avatar

Morgan Lee L.

Yelp
The door guy let my guy friend in for free and wouldn't let me in even though it's my 23rd birthday and the cops LIED for him and said I said tuff I didn't but that's all I'm saying

S B.

Yelp
Bouncer kicked us out for being s "fire hazard" as We Waited for a friend. So disrespectful towards us I couldn't believe it.

Logan F.

Yelp
It's essentially a giant frat party. Girls who push you out of the way and their boyfriends trying to fight you for being in the way. The staff is rude and drinks are mediocre. Shut it down.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
The bouncers do their job right. They will kick you out for disagreeing with them. Great place to be, unless you have an opinion about... Really, anything.
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
Wa less than impressed. On an empty Tuesday, I shouldn't have trouble getting a drink. That's not, a I'm-so-hot-why-doesn't-a-boy-like-me kind of trouble. It's the bartender is nowhere to be found or is otherwise completely engrossed in a non-relevant discussion with another customer kind of trouble. The back patio is cool, I suppose. I've had a pleasant time out there before, but nothing exceptional. I won't be coming back unless with someone with an inexplicable preference for the place.
google avatar

Yusef S.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and the security they hire are incompetent. I was told that "my pants were too low" and was handled like a "thug" .. me and a business partner were denied entry for no reason ..no professionalism

John Michael W.

Yelp
Let me begin by acknowledging that the ice at Innisfree was among the top five coldest of any bar I've been to. That is always a plus. Aside from the endless sea of Chubbies and Sperry wearing Greek letter trios, and aside from the multitude of 20-something tanorexic blonde girls screaming "OMG KELLY! This is OUR song!" regardless of the song being played, I have two complaints. 1. Why as the DJ so far away from me? How on Earth am I to request Photograph by Nickelback, or How You Remind Me by Nickelback, or Rock Star by Nickelback when the DJ is on the roof? 2. Cell reception was terrible. It took almost ten minutes to get a connection to my LinkedIn profile. I just don't understand what you're expecting folks to do when they are separated from a staple such as LinkedIn. But again, the ice was very cold.

Becca T.

Yelp
Was threatened with arrest for trespassing by the cop. Screamed at by bouncers. We were a group of adults (30 years old plus) waiting to get in. (Had I read the reviews about the clientele and service we wouldn't have even tried to come here). It was pouring down rain and we were trying to decide whether to pay the 5 dollar cover or leave. Well, apparently we stood under the awning too long, and were threatened with arrest unless we left. I understand the need to keep exits clear for safety/access, but we were not impeding either. In the time we stood there, two people left the bar and one went in without us blocking them. Escalation could have been avoided had the bouncer and cop used better judgement. Terrible experience.

Ben K.

Yelp
Needs to definitely work on the level of customer service. ATM was out and when I asked an employee about it he asked to see the receipt no matter the card the ATM would say declined. I was needing cash to pay their bouncer so I asked him to please run the card behind the bar and I would happily show him my account to prove plenty of money was available however the bartender refused to run the card to pay THEIR BOUNCER forcing me to have to leave and walk down the road to find a nearby ATM to withdraw money. Drinks are overpriced and fights are always a normal thing here. If you prefer rough crowds and rude staff this is the place to be.

Matt M.

Yelp
Worst bar in Birmingham. Layout is horrible. Bartenders are probably the worst I've ever dealt with. If you wanna spend your night trying to get a drink and pushing your way past people in a cramped space, then this is your place. Otherwise go somewhere else.

Meredith H.

Yelp
Innisfree is always a good time. Love coming here on the weekends especially. The bartenders are great and very friendly
