Yelp
I'm wide awake for the delectable cookies they are serving up at Insomnia Cookies! Located on Kearny Street which is a busy stretch of the Financial District of downtown San Francisco, Insomnia Cookies is a franchise that is slowly making its way to the West Coast. So named because they are open late and ready to cure any late night cravings for some baked goods, I have been wanting to try Insomnia Cookies ever since they opened a year ago, with this being this popular East Coast chain's first location in the Bay Area. Started by a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Insomnia Cookies is a chain of bakeries/ cookie shops that specialize in both selling and delivering warm cookies, baked goods, and ice cream. Getting to this location was super easy, especially since I had a dinner reservation in nearby Chinatown, so finding parking there and walking over on a warm Saturday evening was a serious possibility. The first thing you notice upon entry, is their location is super small, so small they could only safely have one customer in at a time when attempting to place a takeout order. Thankfully, I was the only customer inside at the time, and I tried getting through my order, as soon as possible, not that their one and only representative in their store was a very personable individual. Upon asking what his favorite cookie was, it was nothing but pert answers that felt I was bothering him with my innocuous routine questions.
Nevertheless, I was here for one thing and one thing only, cookies. And thanks to their menu on their wall, it's pretty straightforward on what they offer everyday and how they package them for takeout. Their menu has nine warm cookies that are categorized as "Classic" and six warm cookies that are categorized as "Deluxe." Served in boxes that resemble pizza boxes no less, for the Classic Warm Cookies you can choose between a 6, 12 or 24 pack, while they have other options for the Deluxe Warm Cookies and a combination from both lists. Since it was my first time at Insomnia Cookies, I was down to try their Classic Warm Cookies, every single one of them and since their Box that they call "Sugar Rush" was a decent price point for 23 dollars for 12 Classic large warm cookies, I was sold. Their server did tell me that they were out of oatmeal raisin as this time, so I had eight cookies to select from, so I ordered the remaining eight of Chocolate Chunk, Classic with M&M's, Sugar, Peanut Butter Chip, Snickerdoodle, White Chocolate Macadamia, Double Chocolate Mint and Double Chocolate Chunk and doubled up on both Double Chocolate Cookies, the White Chocolate Macadamia, and Chocolate Chunk respectively.
I decided to take my cookies home to enjoy and I am so glad I did, as the warmth was no longer in each bite, but there was a creaminess and richness with every bite along with that certain chewiness that tends to come with store bought cookies. I appreciated the size of the cookies, as nowadays the cookies that I buy in stores are getting smaller in size but more expensive in cost, but not at Insomnia Cookies as they are large and almost full meal size. My favorites were both of their Double Chocolate Cookies, whether with mint or just chocolate chunks, they were both exceptional, which was a surprise to me because normally I don't prefer double chocolate cookies, but the ones they make at Insomnia Cookies are first rate. In fact, all of the cookies sold at Insomnia Cookies were delicious, which only makes me want to come back for more, with their Deluxe Cookies sounded quite unique and delicious. They all sell ice cream, which makes for a good old ice cream sundae with a cookie on top, and they also sell cookie sandwiches, which they call 'wiches. And to top things off, they even sell a Chocolate Chip Brownies, smaller cookies called Minis, and larger cookies that they call Cookie Cakes. This just proves that they are so much more than just cookies at Insomnia Cookies, but the star product they sell are some of the best tasting and priced in the marketplace, and I am so glad they've joined the epicurean culinary world that is San Francisco. Here's to hoping that more locations of Insomnia Cookies come in the Bay Area, as we as foodies have our eyes wide open when try new things, especially when it comes to sweets as good as these!
