Chicago Coffee Company Intelligentsia Opens Downtown Boston Cafe | Eater Boston

"A downtown coffeebar on the first floor of the former State Street Bank building at 225 Franklin St. in Post Office Square, this location was designed by international firm Gensler and channels a hotel-lobby-bar vibe with communal seating and finishes like marble, leather, and brass to encourage interaction between customers and baristas. It includes an outdoor patio and sits steps from Norman B. Leventhal Park and within minutes of other neighborhood coffee options. The shop follows a direct-trade sourcing model with longtime partnerships with growers in Central and South America and East Africa, also offering teas from Kilogram Tea. Typical hours are weekdays 6:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturdays 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. (closed Sundays)." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

A Guide to Non-Local Coffee Chains in Boston | Eater Boston

"A Chicago-roasted specialty coffee brand that distributes beans to several Boston cafes and opened a full coffee bar and dedicated training lab in the Watertown area in spring 2017. The Watertown site features a chef’s-table-style pour-over bar designed to foster interaction between customers and baristas and partners with local bakeries for pastries, while the adjacent training lab offers programs for wholesale customers. The company, founded in 1995 with an emphasis on direct trade and sustainability, was preparing a second Boston-area location at 225 Franklin St. in the Financial District." - Dana Hatic

Intelligentsia Coffee Will Open Its First Boston Proper Cafe This Summer | Eater Boston

"I learned the second local Intelligentsia is slated to open this summer at 225 Franklin St. in the Financial District (Post Office Square) on the first floor of the State Street Bank building; because it will be inside an office building it will look quite different from the Watertown coffeebar, described as having a bright, open, and airy design, with customers ordering from a barista and then paying at the register, and it will be the first Intelligentsia location to serve nitro cold coffee." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
Excellent high quality coffee and also well made by barista (tested their macchiato twice). Gorgeous marble “lobby” space with ample seating options (bar stools, table/chairs and sofas). Clean, comfortable and easy esthetically pleasing. Did not try pastries. And yes it’s expensive - but you’re paying for quality.

Google
Super amazing experience definitely an expensive matcha. But worth it, 9/10 plus the gorgeous atmosphere around makes it very pleasant the matcha is creamy thick and very flavorful. I did order it with 2% milk, they sell it with oatmilk but they use Oatly which was sunflower oil as an ingredient so I prefer not to drink oil.

I've never had a better shot of espresso than the one I had today from this Intelligentsia location. The baristas were friendly and the location's ambience and aesthetic were on point. Highly recommend this location!

Honestly, one of the best coffee experiences I’ve had. Warm people, cozy atmosphere, and the coffee is perfection.

August 2022: Stopped by for a drip coffee ☕ and an oatmeal. The oatmeal is a third party and not their own. Coffee was really good. It's been over 10+ years since I've had their coffee in Chicago. Definitely before they got bought out by Peet's Coffee. I'm glad they still select excellent coffee beans and take pride in roasting their beans. Oatmeal was less enjoyable. Probably wouldn't get that again and would try one of their baked goods!

Google
Cappuccino was scalding hot, and bland. Chocolate croissant was overcooked & stale/dry. Had to wait 5 minutes for the batista to come back, but she was pleasant. Space is nice, but a little cold for me (both temperature and atmosphere). I went because of a previous good experience in Chicago, but $11 was too much for what I got.

Google
Nice spacious coffee shop with attractive decor. Not cluttered. Nice sofa seating snd bar stool seating as well. Multiple coffee choices. Aldo a couple of tea choices. Only hiccup - they served the tea in a glass pot a cracked handle!

Google
Great coffee for the "coffee snobs". Great service from Yvonne. She made us some solid pour overs.

Yelp
Awesome coffee place in Boston in Financial District. This was the Avena Latte with oat milk, and some spices. Very good, service spectacular and friendly and very clean. Great place to bring work too!

Yelp
Far superior coffee and tea - compared to the usual offerings = from *that ginormous chain. Gorgeous environment. Friendly baristas. Win - win

Yelp
Super super 5 Star coffee shop around Boston financial district! They make the best coffee latte! Also, the good service keeps me coming back for years no matter how many new coffee shops opened around the area. Worthy for every penny you pay if you are looking for the quality of coffee instead of quantity. Btw they have very comfortable couches if you wanna take a break from the office ;)

Yelp
Great coffee in the cleanest and most modern lobby you will ever await a talented barista as they create your coffee goodness. We enjoyed the setting almost as much as the coffee we were drinking

Yelp
I stopped by here a couple of Tuesday's ago with a coworker for our morning coffee. We were staying at the Langdon next door and so this coffee shop was more of a convenience than something that we actually searched out. Still the inside of it was large and bright with a large coffee bar type area and then some other seating. After some deliberation I ultimately decided on a latte and ordered it with almond milk instead of traditional milk. Our barista informed me that they also had oat milk as a non diary alternative and told me others liked it a lot. So I decided to go with that instead even though it was my first time trying oat milk. As for the taste I have to admit that I liked it. It tasted a little of oatmeal but also had a milk like consistency to it. I can't say that I tasted too much coffee flavor in it but nevertheless I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My latte was good and I am glad the barista talked me into trying the oat milk.

Yelp
Coffee is good. Professionally done. Super expensive. There's a ton more competition out there compared to when this brand was launched years ago. If money is no object, fine, but you could save a few bucks going someplace else for good coffee these days.

Yelp
Stopping in for a latte every morning as become ritual for me. Located in the lobby of 225 Franklin Street tower (across from Langham Hotel), it's close to home, gym and work which is convenient - BUT added bonus is that it is in top 2 best coffee places in Boston. I don't give 5 stars often but they deserve it. Coffee- one of two favs in Boston. Staff- very friendly, efficient, accommodating and knowledgeable. Location- lobby of 225 Franklin Street tower. Soaring space - clean, modern with seating at bar or in lobby. Not open weekends. I miss the coffee but glad to know staff has that time off. I'd urge coffee lovers to try this out. I think you will agree that it's in a class beyond almost all.

Yelp
Does drinking intelligentsia coffee make you intelligent? No, just kidding but I wish it did! Although I didn't become smarter from drinking their coffee, I can tell you that this is excellent coffee from Chicago. I had a normal coffee, and it was delicious, and didn't taste like watered down coffee at all. There is very limited seating, there are a few seats at the coffee bar as well as a few more seats by the window. We sat at the window and enjoyed people watching!

Yelp
Right now it looks like there are only two Intelligentsia "coffeebars" in the Boston area, but this one (Post Office Square) is the only one I've been to so far (since it's right next to my gym -- so convenient!); I've heard great things about the Watertown bar as well, so plan to go ASAP! I highly recommend this location for a few big reasons! 1. Most importantly: the people who work here are super, super nice, are really good at what they do (making coffee and tea and being kind and helpful to customers, plus all the other awesome things I'm sure they do but I don't know about!), and are interesting people who are fun to talk to. A lot of them know stuff about music. I don't know all of their names, but I'm going to give a shoutout to Christina and John (not sure if those are the correct spellings) because I know theirs! 2. Obviously, the food and drink here are incredible! Unfortunately, I'm not a coffee drinker, so can't weigh in on that front, but I am a big fan of their turmeric tonic (see my photo!), their hot cocoa, and all the food I've tried (pastries, oatmeal, granola bars, etc.)! I love Tatte's ham-and-cheese croissant, and the one they have here is next best! 3. The decor / ambiance is incredible. It is a bar surrounding a small square 'kitchen' where the baristas work, but is situated within the swanky, high-ceilinged marble-and-glass lobby of an office building, which has cool furniture and an interesting rotating music playlist! Whoever designed the Intelligentsia space is a master, though... the accent colors on lights around the white-marble bar match the color of the cappuccino machine. There are succulents on wall shelves! And the to-go cups are works of art. You can sit at the bar and order and pay as you leave, European-style, or pay upfront at the register. As you can tell, I freakin' love this place, so go and enjoy!

Yelp
I have been waiting for Intelligentsia to come to Boston for FOREVER. I know, I know - there's one in Watertown - but that's two subways and a bus away from me. This one in Post Office Square is right near my work, which means I go almost every day. It's in the lobby of a large office building, but they've done a lot with the space to make it feel warm and inviting. There's a large counter with seating that allows you to watch the baristas make drinks and a really cool teal La Marzocco with their logo branded right on it. It's a really great space! Every single barista there has been really kind to me, and some already even know my order. And obviously, the coffee is amazing. One of my favorite things about Intelligentsia as opposed the Blue Bottle just a block away is that they offer a decaf pourover option, which is great for those times when I really want coffee, but really don't need caffeine. They have a limited food selection (some sandwiches and a few pastries), and they only take credit cards. Seating is a bit limited (maybe 15 seats at the counter and about 7 near the windows), but there is usually room. Thanks for bringing this amazing Chicago classic to my new city!

Yelp
Hmm not sure what the hype is about. Barista gal was super nice. Price is high for 16 oz iced I think. Coffee was fine but didn't grab me. Someone said the lobby was inviting but seems sterile and they've got to keep it pristine for the companies so vacuum cleaner is annoying at the moment. And for those of us who default to cash for small purchases, you're SOL here.

Yelp
I'm so excited to finally see an Intelligentsia in Boston proper! Whenever I travel, I always seek one out. Their coffee is great: flavorful, smooth, and not too bitter or acidic. Their pastries are also quite good. I visited this new location in the lobby of 225 Franklin St on their first day, Friday Aug 17, and was not disappointed. I had the Costa Rica brewed coffee, which was excellent as expected. My office is a block away so it's a little dangerous to have this so close by. I visited again on Saturday to sit and experience the new space, and it's pretty cool. There is bar seating all around it and some standing tables by the windows. I hope this is the first of many locations in Boston proper. If you're a coffee lover in Boston, I recommend that you check it out!

Yelp
Intelligentsia is what Starbucks should be, a high quality coffee chain. Their espresso is delicious with complimentary sparkling water to clean the palate. I love these in Chicago happy to see one in Boston.

Yelp
I was excited when Intelligentsia came to the Boston area (Watertown) but even more excited when I heard there would be one in Boston proper! I checked out the new location yesterday on their first morning open and was delighted to find the clean aesthetics, great service, and of course exceptional coffee that Intelligentsia is known for. The location is small, but welcoming, with seating at a common bar wrapping around a central work area. I had a pour-over of their Tikur Ethiopia which was clean, bright, and delicious. Even though it was the first day, the baristas were attentive and seemed to be managing the flow quite well. It's great to have yet another awesome coffee spot in downtown Boston and I'll definitely be back to visit again!

Yelp
I am in love with this coffee bar! The coffee while a bit on the expensive side is great and the staff all seem to know what they're talking about in regards to it. The service I've received here has never been less than fantastic and the drinks are always a hit. I'm not a big coffee drinker and often ask the baristas their opinions and they've never steered me wrong. Also the Ham and Cheese croissants are absolutely fantastic.

Yelp
Nope. I went there for the "opening", (the bar was filled with trendy folk drinking coffee. I was told to go away - they were not open. I suspect that these trendy folks were bought and paid for social media guys, describing the wonders of the coffee and the service. "Put that down!" was the only comment I got when I picked up a nutrition bar, to see the ingredients. I went back today with my "free coffee" voucher, which they had been handing out. I was then asked to pay more than $5 for a latte. The "free coffee voucher" is only for drip coffee, which is in keep-warm pot sitting on the counter. Grow a moustache, wear a button-down flannel shirt buttoned to the collar, and some trendy glasses. maybe you are their type of customer. I don't need to be seen there, and I strongly suspect that these 5 star reviews are fake e.g "the location is small" really? It's in a 3,000 foot entry lobby with triple height ceilings! There is counter space for a dozen, seating for 25, and standing room for maybe 300. It's bigger than any Starbucks.

Pedro B.

Yelp
Sipping it every weekday at three. Fact is most coffee in Boston blows. Intelligentsia is worth the premium fee. All that glorious caffeine wiggles my toes. Going there reminds me of the west coast. It's starting to get chilly so I'm not happy. So I gotta enjoy the nostalgia the most. Intelligentsia... my happiness lackey.

Yelp
Server was very rude when i asked about what decaf items they serve. Don't expect good service if you aren't up to speed on the menu offerings.

Bryan R.

Yelp
Unfortunately they do not accept cash, which is Massachusetts state law. They will offer you your coffee for free if you don't have cash, but I feel strongly about being able to pay with US dollars.
