International Bakery is a Greek bakery located in the same strip mall as and next door to Taqueria del Sol on Cheshire Bridge Road. This is an old-fashioned bakery that's been in Atlanta's Lindridge-Martin Manor neighborhood for years. The small shop is stocked to the gills with all sorts of breads, pastries, tarts, cakes, cookies, snacks, and various Greek food products. The owner is an older, gruff, no-nonsense man whose shop has created quite a following.
Two cakes were brought in from International Bakery for an office function. They were both fruit cream cakes. I'm pretty sure this is one of the store's bestselling cakes. The circular cakes were topped with slices of strawberry and kiwi. The outer edges were coated with sliced almonds. The cake tasted fresh and delicious. The slices were moist and delicate, the cream was light and fluffy, and the fruit was ripe and sweet. There was a thin layer of smooth, transparent gelatin on top which seemed to seamlessly meld the fruit to the cake. Each cake was $20 and fed 12-16.
They have what appears to be smaller, single-size servings of this cake in one of their display cases. Strawberry, kiwi, and cream. Other well sought-after baked goods include baklava, cannoli, and spanokopita (Greek spinach pie). The pastries are affordably priced.
They've got homemade Greek yogurt. In a fridge in the back, there are different cheeses, both Greek and Italian. Examples include imported and domestic feta, hard and soft ricotta, and kefalotiri and halloumi cheeses (some purchasable by the pound).
Sort of like a mini Greek supermarket, International Bakery also carries an assortment of imported Greek food products such as Papadopoulos snacks including Miranda biscuits and Caprice wafers with chocolate and hazelnut filling. There are cartons of Amita fruit juice. Orange-apricot-apple, peach, and cherry are among the available flavors I've seen. And there are canned goods and meze (sides) such as Castella-brand Aegean baked giant beans in tomato sauce.
Call ahead if placing cake or large orders.
The storefront sign reads "InterBAKERYnational." Just look for "BAKERY" in all-caps neon red.
