D.C.’s Essential Irish Pubs | Eater DC

"Ireland’s Four Courts made a triumphant comeback last fall after a fiery car crash forced the Arlington institution to close and rebuild. The reinvented menu brings back Irish favorites like house-brined corn beef and cabbage, Guinness-braised beef stew, and fish and chips. For its first Saint Paddy’s Day party since 2022, weeklong festivities indoors and under a tent call for beer bingo (Monday, March 11), Irish pub quiz (Tuesday, March 12), Irish music karaoke (Wednesday, March 13), Guinness pint engraving (Thursday, March 14), and waking up early at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday with Irish dance groups and live music all day." - Tierney Plumb

Where to Eat and Drink Around Clarendon and Courthouse

"Saddle up to this durable Irish pub, a Courthouse fixture for more than 20 years. Draft beers range from Irish classics like Guinness and Magner’s Irish Cider by the pint, plus a selection of whiskey includes four variations of Jameson. Traditional pub grub includes corned beef and cabbage ($17) and beer-battered fish and chips ($16)." - Kalina Newman

One of our favorite local places to grab a meal or watch a match over drinks! Everything is delicious but my favorite is the Shepherd’s Pie: perfect flavor and lots of ground beef, lamb, and veggies. My kids love the wings, too. Highly recommend this place!

Google
We had dinner here with an appetizer and 2 drinks to add. The food was fair and to be expected. Our server was mostly attentive....kind of had to get his attention at the end. Overall, a typical experience.

After a fun night at Quinn’s, we stumbled into Ireland’s Four Courts in Arlington with our tipsy crew—and what a great surprise! The live music was buzzing, the vibe was electric, and the drink variety kept the night going strong. Only downside? A tiny 30ml Fireball shot for $10 felt like a bit of a rip-off. But aside from that, everything else was on point. Big kudos to the team for keeping the late-night energy alive!

Ireland's Four Courts is a great spot for great food, drinks, and a true Irish pub experience. The menu offers a solid variety of classic dishes, and everything I tried was flavorful and well-prepared—definitely recommend the fish and chips, the shepherd's pie, hummus with peta bread. The drink selection is also good, with a great range of beers on tap and cocktails to suit any taste. The service was friendly and attentive, even during busy times, which added to the welcoming vibe. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, with a cozy interior that makes you feel like you’re in the heart of Ireland. Whether you're there to catch up with friends, watch a game, or just enjoy a good meal, this place hits the mark. It was a bit loud and crowded. Overall, a good experience that’s worth checking out if you’re in the area!

I enjoyed this pub. The bartender was polite and friendly. The atmosphere is very rustic and seemed original to the area.

After the Soccer game that Washington DC United had with the New Yorker team, me and my fiancé were late to have some decent food and drinks. It was about 10 minutes before the service closing and we had the best treatment, felt welcomed, not like “oh where did you guys come up from now” … No no… They really made us all the dishes that we requested with the care as if it is not last minute. Plus we are living right across the street from this beautiful place so we are now officially regulars!!! People are so well dressed up, properly conducting themselves, very kind and everybody’s respectful; it is the reflection of the service that is provided here! Plus… The place is filled with regulars. They are all like family. I lived in the UK for 10 years and this place took me where ai exactly wanted to be. Great place to spend time even if it is late, you will feel safe and still taste good food! We ordered classical pub food that we would get in the UK & Ireland.

Google
Solid food, good vibes, has the Irish beers and ciders you're looking for, and great service even when they're slammed - which they have been every time I've visited. The food comes out fast even when they're busy. Pics are of the chicken boxty and the Reuben. Both delish! I've had the fish n chips before too, usually pretty good, sometimes a bit oily.

Yelp
Ultra modern looking Irish style pub. Parking as ever in this area a challenge. Service friendly food pretty standard fare and reasonably priced. Apparently an Uber driver smashed in the front giving the opportunity to rebuild the bar. Irish breakfast perfect for me. Burger ok.

Yelp
Came here for the first time today for the Arsenal Liverpool match and it was packed. The place is much bigger on the inside than you would expect. Every seat was still taken, with plenty of people standing. Nonetheless, I was shocked on how great the service was. We ordered beers. We got beers fast. We ordered food. We got food fast. My friend ordered steak and eggs but we think he got someone else's food bc he didn't order a side of baked beans and his eggs were supposed to be scrambled instead of over easy.. they brought out a small plate of scrambled eggs in less than two minutes. Overall great experience. Would recommend.

Yelp
Decent pub fare but I don't know if I would go back for the food. Definitely would go back for the drinks, soccer games and atmosphere! Service was good even when the tables started to fill up.

Yelp
Ordered take out. The service was great. The food was nothing to rave about but was satisfying. I wish the cheeseburger i ordered had more seasoning and was juicier, but it was fine. I may come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Back for the first time since the fire, and wow-- Ireland four courts looks great! It was always a fun bar but now it feels almost like a more elevated sports bar experience. Food per usual -- phenomenal. We ordered the spinach dip and it appears to be the same recipe as before, and I'm thankful for that. Drinks were made perfectly, owner went out of his way to turn the big tv on for us to watch the game. All in all, fantastic experience and I look forward to more football Sundays to come!
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
We came here to watch sports and the vibes were great. The service was super friendly and fast. They had a nice beer list and the options on the menu were not bad just a little pricey. I got the sweet chili wings and they were not spicy at all but still good. I am not sure if the food and drink prices are worth the price but watching sports is good there.
google avatar

Yelp
The service is great and the selection of food is just as good before they temporarily closed. Everyday has some type event and meal special.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
After having sushi we decided wanting some dessert. We haven't been here in a while, but it was packed for football, and they still have many TV's going, which is a great plus. We got the Irish bread pudding and the Bailey's cheesecake. The Bailey's cheesecake is definitely the winner between the two desserts, and we will be back for more. Great spot if you're looking for a drink, to watch a game, or to hang out with friends.

Yelp
The Courts is now open again. After a year of hard work, what started off as a tragedy has become a demonstration of what a community is capable of doing. This bar has created a family and now that family is back together. My family was attending this restaurant before I was born. Over my 27 years of life, this place has had the kindest staff and the most amazing regulars. It is so incredible to see them operating again. The Washington Post has ranked it one of the Top 10 places to watch Premier League soccer. They have genuine tasty Irish cuisine. I highly suggest everybody should stop by and check this place out. I know it will have the same impact on you that it had on me.

Yelp
Excellent dinner service for a large group of 36 senior citizens on a bus tour. The pre planning was spontaneous on I truly enjoyed my shepherd's pie and my table mates enjoyed the fish and chips. My partner and I had a Smithwick, (pronounced correctly). Our table mates found their drink selections very agreeable. Th wait staff were attentive and friendly. An unexpected delicious vanilla ice cream treat rounded off the meal. Kudos to all. The restaurant was a perfect Americanized Irish pub.

Yelp
Went for Easter dinner with my family. My father went there often many years ago. They were fast, fun and the food was delicious. The server was personable but not obtrusive. We'll definitely go back.

Yelp
This Irish pub and restaurant had a great aesthetic, feeling very well loved, and quaint. The server was very polite, and answered all questions that the party had the food two came out, not taking more than 10 minutes and it was delicious potato pancake was spongy, perfectly paired with the chicken, bacon, and sauce inside the bowl. The only issue is that some of the pieces of chicken tasted a little too well done, but it was manageable. Would recommend if you want a comfy sit down place in Arlington.

Yelp
First Visit (5*) I stopped off for dinner before heading over to the AMC for a show. There are lots of restaurants close by and this is the first time I've been here. It won't be the last. I had a pint of Guinness because "When in Rome..." and I was happy that it wasn't overly chilled. Since Wednesday, I started with their "5-for-$5 Boneless Chicken Wings special. It turns out the joke was on me. They're not wings at all but more akin to Chicken Nuggets. Except for these taste delicious and are nicely crispy--kind of like chicken nuggets for grownups. I followed that with a Farmer's Ruben and fries. I've had Ruben sandwiches that had more meat than this one, but I can't remember any that were tastier. (And don't get me wrong, they gave me a goodly amount of corned beef with my sandwich. Second Visit (1*) The service was terrible. Things took forever to arrive. When I asked for a soda refill, the server refilled my glass where the ice had already mostly melted, resulting in a watery mess. Sadly, he was too busy to come back so we could fix the problem. My food, a burger and fries this time, was meh. The burger was warm and tasted OK, and the fries were cold and greasy. If this had been my first visit, there wouldn't have been a second. Now, I suppose there'll be a tiebreaker but not anytime soon.

Yelp
Went to this Irish bar to watch the Minnesota Vikings vs. Los Angeles Chargers game on November 14th. Arrived at 3:30 PM and got seated near the bar in the back where they had nice TVs. Ordered some food - got the Sliders, Chicken Wings and a Chocolate Cake. Food tasted good. They weren't anything out of the ordinary. Sliders could have been cooked a little more, as the first order was fine. But second batch was a bit undercooked for 2 of the burgers. Wings were good. A little pricey for the Game Day Menu, though. The Men's Bathroom had a Garbage Pail Kids sticker. LOL! Parking across the street was nice, free on the weekends. Went to Dunkin Donuts for a coffee while taking a walking break as well. An alright place to watch the Vikings.

Joe E.

Yelp
Great spot for easy food and a drink. Most of the Irish food items are great and so are the nachos. Would give this place a 4.4 for the food and vibes on karaoke night. Miss the old style they had before the remodel and the car that crashed into it in 2022.

Yelp
There are several Irish pubs in the arlington area and we've been on a mission to try them all! The exterior of Ireland's Four Courts looks homey and inviting and the inside decor definitely has an Irish pub ambience. My boyfriend and I walked in for dinner around 8pm on a Friday night and were able to get a table without a problem. That's not to say that the place was empty though - there were only a few available tables and the atmosphere was lively. I ordered the chicken boxty and my boyfriend got the chicken pot pie. They have all the traditional pub options you could want (bangers and mash, stews, fish and chips, etc.) as well as a nice selection of appetizers and sandwiches. The servers were friendly and it took about 20 minutes for the food to come out. Be prepared to be in a food coma when you're done. The chicken boxty was RICH with a fair amount of chicken and an even more generous serving of potato pancake. My boyfriend really enjoyed his meal, and he tends to be particular about his chicken pot pies! Prices are standard for DMV area ($15-20) but the food is filling enough to leave you satisfied for a while.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots indeed for hanging out with friends or watching some football (it's not soccer, it's football y'all!) I like the vibe and energy. This time I tried some hazy IPA and buffalo chicken wings, all them really good. This is definitely a spot you would go back a lot, and it's close to courthouse metro which is a plus if you don't want to drive.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
I came here on a cold Saturday wanting a quick Guinness. The place is doing quite well considering it's Covid and welcomes you with its warm ambiance. Drinks: Needless to say, we got Guinneses and was a perfect pint for all of us. Cleanliness: The place is socially distancing everyone and it helps to have one-time use paper menus. Ambiance: This place is a good break from Clarendon and the craziness of bars there. There's an abundance of room with booths, high-tops, and bar area seating which gives you ample options for small to large groups. I would come back for food and more drinks.

Molly R.

Yelp
Great food and great people! The beer is great, the entertainment is great! Best Irish pub in Arlington!
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
This is the spot! We love this place so much, best fish n chips in town and the best staff too! We have a great time whenever we visit and hope they recover soon (some bonehead drove their car into the front of the building and forced them to close for a while; we miss you I4C!) Give these fine folks your business, no one deserves it more :')

Yelp
This is a great local irish pub. Definitely one of the best ones I've been to in the DC area, hence why I'm always coming back. They have awesome wings and great happy hour specials and the staff is very nice. The bartenders are super attentive and efficient. If you are looking for a place to have a casual drink or watch a sports game I highly recommend going here.

Dan L.

Yelp
Because I love this place and so happy to see that it's reopened, I visited on my first opportunity earlier this night. I'm a wine drinker and was dismayed to learn that a friendly neighborhood pub least expensive bottle of red wine is nearly $50 (and a glass $12), downtown DC prices at my much expensive places. Otherwise everything else was wonderful, staff as friendly as I remember, the remodeled decor very nice. But...for love of god, please, please rethink your wine prices. Isn't a 100% mark-up sufficient? Why fleece yoru loyal patrons for more?
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
Wholesome & super friendly - love coming here! Service is great and staff is so friendly. I love watching sports games here or just coming by to grab a beer. Feel very safe during COVID.

Yelp
What an amazing place Quiet and private totally recommended Full cares on COVID social distance Doesn't matter to be social (but they cares) Food was on point Server amazingly friendly( Claudia ) Thanks for always having that smile I call "spirit to serve " you are amazing Can't wait to go again Special thanks for kitchen staff See you guys again !!!
google avatar

Yelp
Ireland's Four Courts is a little out my stomping grounds, but it's a cool Irish pub nonetheless. The decor is typical Irish pub all the way, and they serve up some pretty tasty Guinness pour as a proper pint should be poured. I decided to go with their cheesy potato skins, and for the most part, I was quite pleased. They didn't overcook my potato skins which was very nice, as too many bars bake the life out of their potato skins. However, Ireland's Four Courts skins were a hearty snack that really hit the spot. If I'm ever in the area again, this Guinness and potato haven will certainly be my first stop.
google avatar

Shannon T.

Yelp
Came here on March 16th and received a Guiness cup with a free engraving! Also got solid $1 wings on a Wednesday night. For st. Patrick's day tomorrow, there will be live music and I anticipate going back!
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
After walking around in Clarendon and Courthouse area in the summer heat, we decided to reward ourselves with drinks at Ireland's Four Courts. The bartenders were friendly, social, and attentive. My BF enjoyed Smithwick's, Guinness and a shot of Bushmills Irish Whiskey. I enjoyed an Orange Crush and a Buttery Nipple shooter. The Orange Crush consisted of Absolut Mandarin vodka, triple sec, orange juice, and sprite. It was light, sweet, fruity, and refreshing. The Buttery Nipple shooter tasted like a butterscotch or toffee candy.
google avatar

Aggie S.

Yelp
I started going here because my boyfriend drags me to watch soccer. The regular brunch is good from what I remembered and the buffet brunch was definitely delicious and worth your money. Staff is great and soccer fans are wild during soccer games. I was definitely getting into cheering even though i'm not as interested with soccer haha. At buffet brunch, they literally had everything which was so crazy like they even have shepherd's pie and eggs benedict and an omelet station. It was crazy so much food hahaha I loved it. I never been here for dinner or happy hour though so I can't comment much on that but I will certainly try in the future!
google avatar

Rylee C.

Yelp
Literally gave us moldy bread. And then just replaced the bread on the same plate that the mold was on.. I understand Sunday brunch is a busy time but how do you serve mold to customers!?? Do not recommend
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
Really, the main purpose of this update is to inform that the mac n cheese is spicy. I like a good amount of heat, and I enjoyed the mac we received, but anyone who dislikes or can't tolerate spice should pass on IFC's mac. It tastes a bit like they tossed pasta in Tostito's spicy queso. Which, you know, was tasty, but not what you expect when ordering something advertised as mac n cheese. Also, I learned that going forward I should have the person taking my order read the entire ticket back to me. When we got home with our takeaway order, an entire entree was missing. It wasn't on the bill, so no real harm done. It was just annoying that my boyfriend had to step out again to find a burger elsewhere. We were thrilled to see that Ireland's Four Courts had reopened for takeout. I indulged my craving for a full Irish breakfast, and my boyfriend ordered a burger and mac n cheese. We didn't get the burger. I'm not 100% sure the mac wasn't pasta tossed with Tostito's queso. But, at the very least, the full Irish breakfast was a ridiculous amount of hearty food.

Yelp
This restaurant is an Arlington staple. I have been coming here for years and am never disappointed. Their shepherd's pie is the standard by which I judge all other meat pies, and not many come close. The staff knows their whiskey and scotch, and I always enjoy a good conversation with them. A lot can change in 12 years. I would enjoy a scotch written at the same time as I bottled that last review, and they would have the perfect recommendation to pair with this bowl of amazing meat and potatoes.

Patrick R.

Yelp
This comment specifically concerns Wayne, karaoke's host on Sundays. He's very unapproachable and standoffish and, this past Sunday, I decided I'm never coming back because he lets the same people sing over and over again while he makes me and everyone else wait 2-3 hours to sing at least one song. Someone even told me: "I'm angry because he's made me wait an hour-and-a-half to sing my song while he lets the same people sing one song after another." I told her: "Tell me about it! I put mine in two hours ago! Since he did this last week and the week before, I might as well stop coming here." As we were talking, about a dozen people stormed out because they got fed up with having to wait their turns and watch the same people. Bottom line: DO NOT come to karaoke on Sundays. You will waste your time.

Yelp
A pretty good spot The service was friendly but it really seemed to cater to the regulars, which I get. The food was okay. Good selection of drinks. Worth a visit but there are a lot of pubs in the area.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
My all time favorite bar on planet earth. Great Whiskey, Awesome Irish + other great option backed up by a Super Service Team. To top this off, the Air Force Combat Rescue team has held eight Air Rescue Wakes/Mixers with 40-100 people. Ireland's always delivers a great product at very affordable prices. Festus Out.
google avatar

Alexa M.

Yelp
Love coming here for a beer and trivia or to watch soccer games. The atmosphere is pretty cozy (haven't been super late at night though) and the food is better than I expected. It's a place we always end up going when I'm too lazy to cook and we want drinks. It's also an official Tottenham bar which is cool if you're a fan
google avatar

Banu D.

Yelp
Great Irish, especially fun when they have live music.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer, friendly and super helpful bartenders, decent burger too. Visited on a Saturday night and live music started up at 9 or 10pm. Fun local pub!

Yelp
Katie was absolutely amazing for my very large family!! We kept growing and she kept up with absolutely no problem. The live music was also amazing!! We had so much fun we went the next day for lunch and also had great service. Great for soccer fans too. Love this place!!! WE LOVE KATIE!!!

Yelp
I was out on an adventure and had an urge for fish and chips and a Guinness. I've been wanting to try this place for a while but always seem to be close by too early. Today was the day and did not disappoint. Be time I will try the ambiance inside.
google avatar

Carly A.

Yelp
Terribly rude management during St Paddys day. Would absolutely never go back. Food was terrible.

Martha H.

Yelp
The very best. Wishing them all the best. They are a neighborhood gem. Greatest staff and owner and a wonderful place to be. An Arlington treasure.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
this place is a vibe and a half. i had so much fun i did not stop to photograph my food or drinks!! i went with my friend a week ago and absolutely loved the ambiance and food. there were plenty of gluten free options, which is key to making my experience wonderful - in addition to great music and service. will be back for sure!!

Yelp
The famous chef Thomas is totally disappointed in his treatment here. Therefore, the famous chef Thomas can only give this place a rating of 1. Stay tuned and the famous chef Thomas will elaborate. Here is why: The famous chef Thomas was seated and ready to place his order. Next the waiter comes and informs the famous chef Thomas that the room is going to have a party in an hour so the famous chef Thomas has to move. Is he out of his mind? Does he have an idea of whom he is talking to. The famous chef Thomas has to move after being seated. What a way to make a customer feel like a 3rd class citizen. Well the famous chef Thomas decided that the correct response is to leave this vile restaurant and not to spend his hard earned money there period. The famous chef Thomas at this time cannot recommend patronizing this vile establishment.
google avatar

Brigid Mary M.

Yelp
Fave place in town!! Love the staff, vibes and all the weekly events. Great for a drink and the food is good too.

Yelp
So happy with this place during the pandemic. The stayed open and their food is top notch. While making us feel safe every simple Week. Bravo to Dave and Tim for making this work and keeping life normal
google avatar

Yelp
No fan here. Four courts is stale leprechaun farts. The management is rude to customers. Rip-off prices for beers and booze. Guinness tasted diluted. No snacks (again). It's a money pit where your cash disappears. Stay away! Rebel review: 2

Chloe A.

Yelp
Most men I have ever seen in a bar ever. Writing this mostly as a PSA for women anywhere. If you are down to be surrounded by a bunch of drunk Chads having tense conversations and bumping into one another, this is the place for you. They have good fish and chips I think.
google avatar

Nathaniel S.

Yelp
After being weirdly turned away/denied at Tupelo Honey, my hispanic family strolled over to Ireland's Four Courts. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and shown table. A total of 4 different employees came to our table during our breakfast and all were very polite, attentive, and happy to be there. We had breakfast and every one liked their choices (2 French toast, Eggs my way?, and a Traditional Irish Breakfast). A big thank you to the establishment and it's employees for helping our morning get back on the right start. We will definitely be stopping by with more friends and family to catch games, enjoy good food, and support a great business.
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
I came here because I wanted to catch a basketball game and my coworker and I wanted to get a night cap before calling it quits. I just had dinner, but I was thinking... well it was my last night there and might as well go all out and order the Chicken Pot Pie. And even though the pricing was the DC pricing that I'm not usually used to, it was worth it. It was tasty. I felt though that maybe here needed to be more chicken and less potatoes, but hey that's just me. I had several beers, and was feeling quite full at the end of it. The ambiance was great, just like what I would imagine an Irish Pub to be like. I mean my imagination could be completely off, but hey I would think that it has a pretty good set as to what an Irish Pub would be like. Anyways, they have these neat mugs that you can purchase and they engrave your name in there to keep at the restaurant so whenever you do decide to come you can drink out of your own mug. I thought that was really neat. Anyways, it's pub. They have pub food. Chicken Pot Pie was good! Check this place out if you're looking for an Irish pub!
