The Best Bars and Pubs in Ottawa and Gatineau | Eater Montreal

"The platonic ideal of a neighbourhood pub, Irene’s is as much a community gathering point as a bar. There’s a great whisky selection, a mix of craft beers and brews from the big companies, and an all-round great vibe. There’s live music relatively frequently, so take note — it can get pretty loud." - Tim Forster

It was blues night on Thursday evening went we went and it was a lot of fun! Great music and lovely to meet the artist afterwards. The place is large enough to accommodate a lot of people comfortably. The food & drinks are super reasonably priced - not a "cheap eats" but not the crazy prices you see everywhere nowadays. I had the sweet potato fries and it was really nice.

Good food. Amazing brews. Great service. And, the tofu katsu sandwich slaps!

Google
A great place for good beer and pub food, but especially great because of the live music! They have great jam sessions as weak as concerts with great energy!

Google
Warm welcome (and that wasn’t just the heat) and we were seated quickly. Tried their Famous Veggie burger and it was the BEST veggie burger I’ve had so far. Although, I don’t think anyone can make it better. Texture, toppings, buns- outrageously good! Others had the poutine and fish and chips -and salad. Also all good options. Dessert was a delectable cake, so good and homemade. Wow! Will be back

Great fish and chips, beers and service on a busy pre-game (Rugby Canada Women) Friday night

I came for the best chicken sandwich in Ottawa according to a friend. It didn’t disappointed.

Google
A great venue for smaller bands and artists! A little outdated in terms of furniture but the decor is cool. The current art pieces they have all look very nice and add to the music atmosphere. Service is always available and efficient. They are attentive. There are lots of options to choose from but it is your standard pub fare. Check it out if you enjoy music, trivia, and some drinks.

Irene’s Pub Restaurant is a vibrant spot with great food, live music, and a laid-back, welcoming vibe. The staff are friendly, the drinks are well-made, and the atmosphere is perfect for a chill night out. A hidden gem in the city!

Yelp
We come here a few times a year for music and fund raising events. It's always fun. Staff are great. No matter how busy it gets they are on top of things. The kitchen can get a bit slow when it's super busy, but I think it's a size limitation, not a process problem. Luckily they have a good beer and other beverage selection, all of which get delivered quickly, so, hey, my beer is my appetizer. It's a fun music venue. Check the website for what's coming up. The room is rustic and cozy with a well worn floor and carved signatures in the wood tables. Lots of character and charm. In nicer weather there's a pleasant patio off the side. Food is pub fare.

Yelp
This place has the best fries (both sweet potato fries and regular fries) that I've found in Ottawa. The atmosphere is so friendly and comfortable, and the art on the walls is always fun to look at. I've attended the trivia nights that they hold on Tuesdays a few times, and I've seen a few local shows that they put on as well. Irene's is definitely a great place to grab drinks and/or dinner with friends. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Finding a spot for a pre-game bite and a drink on the night of the Ottawa Redblack's ( sold out ) home opener I knew could be a challenge. Large crowds all around. But the two of us were able to grab a table at Irene's. Within a reasonable amount of time we got menus. The place was certainly bustling. We put in our orders. Two of the nights specials. Fish and Chips, and the Redblack Burger. Two beers to go with. I was impressed that the drinks came speedily and the food shortly there after. I ordered the burger and it was very good. The fries were also good. The nice touch is the house made ketchup. It is very tasty and has a subtle spiciness. My guest liked the F&C and was really impressed by the slaw. Seems to not have just been an afterthought but nice mix of crunchy veg and also a subtle spiciness too. The beer selection is quite good and several local craft brews on tap as well as the standard mix. We got in and out in time to get to the stadium and the food was great.

Yelp
As someone who's always in search for the best burger this place definitely impressed me. I definitely suggest getting the blackened Burger! I added help unions and hot sauce to kick it up a notch!!!!!

Yelp
Double Date Night Out! Friends of ours are getting married this summer and wanted to check out the band playing at their reception. We had great seats, wound up with the booth right at the front. Ordered dinner and got caught up with our party. For 6 people, the layout was challenging to get all of our plates on our tiny tables, but we managed. I can't for the life of me remember what we ate, but I was full and sufficiently sufficed. During Earth Hour, they turned out the lights and were lit up only by the candles on the tables. The opening band played sans electricity for the hour and then the headliners came in. Accompanied by some of their mothers and aunties who sat beside us for the show! Great group, the staff as well were fantastic. Good place to see live music, though the venue is awkwardly laid out. The Groom to be is a huge Sens fan and was thrilled to be able to watch the game between performers.

Yelp
This is such a fantastic chill place to spend a weekend afternoon, or evening, or weekday evening, or afternoon...you catch my drift. Fantastic selection of beers, lots of seats, pool tables and a stage...and amazing local art.

Yelp
It is a neighbourhood pub in Ottawa that regularly has music. The front is casual pub like with bar counter and some tables and the back is a rather casual restaurant seating with a large stage. Pints are not cheap at $7 and 7.5 but they have a good selection. Food is not bad, but I would pass on the quesadilla as it tasted like natural gas flame. The southwest salad however was amazing! Mostly for the locals but one can chill there too. Love the Sunday evening bluegrass jam!

Yelp
Best neighbourhood pub ever. Lovely warm down to earth staff, great beer, good pub food. And live music. If a bar can be a community then Irene's is it.

Yelp
We visited this little joint on a Monday afternoon (we were lucky to be off work) for a pint and some lunch. They have a great draft beer list (about 12 taps, lots of local brews too) with a feature tap that changes regularly. The bartender looked rather unimpressed that we walked in, but he warmed up after a little while.. I don't know what was up with that - maybe an off day. I had the Southwest Chicken Wrap ($10) - pretty normal: chicken, cheese, lettuce, spicy mayo and the FRIES - they were unreal. The next best thing to a chip stand that you're gonna find in February. My guest had the chili and chips ($9) which was also pretty standard. Both were super tasty. They have a ton of live music and I'd be interested to go back at night but it's not on my priority list.

Yelp
There are a million bars in Ottawa, and tonnes around the location where Irene's is situated. These bars are well populated all week long. In fact, it can be darn difficult to get into some even during a week night. I have been to Irene's twice now - on a Monday night and a Tuesday night - and both times the place was thinly populated. It is a really neat, tidy and comfortable bar - wood, exposed brick, soft lighting. They have live music on a regular basis. Their menu has all the pub grubs - sandwiches, nachos, chicken fingers. They serve great beers on tap (almost 20 brands available). But, for some reason, it is a little quiet. But, perhaps that is its strength - the idea that you can head in and enjoy a good quiet time without the mad crush or head-thumpin' music other pubs inflict on you.

Yelp
A friendly place to see a live music show. I saw a blue harmonica competition. The acoustic is very good. The beers are great here. Since I didn't have the food during my visit, I can't be the judge on that. Will come here again!

Yelp
Irene's Pub has character. It blends phenomenal blues musicians, local art, darts, pool, community camaraderie and deliciously intriguing social misfits into one dark and exciting space. This pub doesn't have an ounce of pretension; it feels like you've walked into the hot night spot in a small town rather than a pub in the Glebe.

Yelp
Irene's doesn't have a lot going for it. The narrow long space is shaped like a bit of an hourglass. Getting through to the back is hard, but worth it. The venue is a live music hall with beers on tap and moderately friendly staff. The style of the patrons is all about checkered shirts, long beards and earthy hemp girls. We saw Dear Blackwolf and got there late. Some of their stuff is metallic, but there was a good mix of folk and rock and roll tunes to make it mainstream enough for the general public. So despite the challenge of a space that is narrow like a hallway, fight your way to the stage and enjoy a good show and beer at Irene's. BTW, the nice blonde lady with glasses looks like she might be Irene!

Yelp
Irenes Pub is a restaurant pub but is also music venue on the weekends and is situated in the Glebe neighborhood of Ottawa. Over the years many renovations have been done to improve the music venue portion of the bar with the sight-lines being improved and getting a new PA. These days you will find the bar consistently booked on Friday and Saturday nights with both local and out of town bands. A great feature of Irenes is the back patio, it is pretty big and offers ample seating as well as a window into the bar so you can stand outside and watch the bands, smokers seem to particularily like this feature. The food at Irenes is pretty standard pub fare, nothing out of the ordinary but fine if you are a looking for a quick bite. The staff is friendly and the bar prices are excellent.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful music most of the evenings and week-ends. Live shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoon as well. It is a artist's friendly place. A good choice of beers and pub-food. The hamburgers are very good and made with local meet and served with local products. It is not pretentious and the prices are OK and quite competitive. The service is good and friendly. People are very much accommodating. A pub frequented by locals and music (country) lower. A must see place for any one traveling to Ottawa. Highly recommended.
