Whew! This review could have easily been 2 stars, but the food gave it a slight boost.
I'll just start by saying the service left a lot to be desired. Walking into to the downstairs dining area, no one was there to greet our party of 4. No host or hostess at all. We looked around confused before wandering upstairs to see yet again no host. The waitress eyed us but we stood there awkwardly near people eating until I could inform we had a reservation. We were late for our initial time (due to reasons beyond our control), but the waitress did seat us. We were told about the QR for the menu, but as we sat, a good 20 minutes went by with no glasses of water, no greeting or even tableware provided. We seriously debated leaving.
After what felt like forever, the waitress walked over and just stood beside the table wordless, waiting for us to turn and ask her about food. I finally asked "Hi, what's your name?" and we eased into making our orders. Odd. A simple introduction and "What would you like?" I always thought was pretty standard in the service industry, not standing awkwardly making us feel silly for not acknowledging you. When it came time to take our orders I asked what was the pasta seasoning like and she kind of grimaced like my question was weird, and she couldn't really describe the dish. I could have been asking due to allergies. The lack of training/preparedness was astounding.
There's grace for these types of things at a new establishment, but training servers to be more attentive and proactive is an easy improvement. I certainly felt for the team there, as they had a decent crowd (a good problem) with short staff for the bar and tables, but something like providing water and utensils right away is the bare minimum. The fact that I had to flag her down after like 15 mins to get water bottles (a whole 'nother rant because where were the glasses?) didn't sit well.
The food took a while, but arrived in enough time for it not to feel like forever. We weren't really checked on after we were served though and the waitress barely made eye contact with us. Nonetheless, the food was hot and delicious. The virgin Ocho Rios punch also was quite nice, and reminded me of our favorite vacation to Jamaica. I have to say, others at the table enjoyed their meals (ox tails, jerk chicken quarters, etc.). despite our gripes with service. It's just hard to vouch for this place until the serving improves.
To sum it up: the space itself is cool and seems to attract a young crowd, looking for cute IG photos. Indeed the inside is set up very stylishly with some gram-worthy touches. That aside, simple enhancements would be a host at all times, turning down the blaring music which makes it impossible to talk without yelling, and most importantly training of waitstaff. Believe it or not, I want to return, the food clearly smacks. I just hope they can address these things, and I will be sure to avoid peak dining times.
