Iron and Gold is a really special bar. It's sort of hidden away being south of Cesar Chavez, but still such a great place and good drinks. I've been when it was packed and when it was close to empty, either way, it has a certain vibe I really enjoy. A few times I've been they have had really great DJs spinning really good music (not typical DJ sets). This is a good bar to claim as your neighborhood bar, but it can also be a stop on a crazy night out.
I've been once and had a few mediocre drinks, but usually (and more recently) I've had nothing but well-made cocktails from a good, smart bartender. In the cooler months they have a few really good hot drinks (which I'm a bug sucker for) and they always have an interesting selection of cocktails which I assume are unique to Iron & Gold.
Another thing I really enjoy about this place is the way they use space. The front of the place, where the actual bar is, is a pretty typical bar: usually busy, mostly standing room only. But past the bathrooms in the back there are some tables and chairs, a couch or two, and it feels more like a loungey lodge-type place. Plus in the cooler months, they light a fire back there and it's nice and toasty.
