The Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings in the San Francisco Bay Area, Spring 2020 - Eater SF

"Respected SF sushi chef Masa Sasaki (Sasaki) is getting into the burger game — specifically, the tuna belly burger game, opening what may well be a first-of-its-kind restaurant concept in the former Hutch space in Uptown Oakland. For the featured dish, thick slabs of yellowtail belly will be breaded and deep-fried, tonkatsu-like, and then served on a bun." - Luke Tsai

Chef Smelly’s Pop-Up Finds a Permanent Home in Oakland - Eater SF

"Chef Smelly’s Creole and Soul Food pop-up regularly drew hours-long waits every Friday night at a downtown Oakland nightclub, but Alameda County’s wavering stance on the legality of pop-up restaurants forced it to leave in October. In the meantime, chef Edward Wooley has been searching for a new home for his fried shrimp over garlic noodles — and now he’s found it: Oakland’s Very Own Tavern and Eatery. The SF Chronicle reports that Wooley will become the executive chef of the North Oakland restaurant right after Thanksgiving. “We’re two brothers from Oakland,” tavern owner Trevel Adanandus told the Chronicle. “I wanted to give him the opportunity to run something of his own without having to pay his own money for it.” In other words, Wooley will be free to make Chef Smelly’s food — Dungeness crab, blackened shrimp, and not the burgers and caesar salads currently on the tavern menu — free from permitting woes." - Janelle Bitker

Had Mother's Day Brunch there today. Wow! It was the best buffet I've had in a long time!! The food was spectacular! Service was top notch and the atmosphere was great!

Honestly, this restaurant inside of the Marrott City Center Oakland, California is expensive. Unfortunately, I had very little time and due to rainy weather and the holiday there were few selections.... When you hungry, you eat, lol. The fish taco, my order was made without the hard taco shell. I wanted Indian naan flatbread and it was delicious. The fries were too salty, drinks reasonable. Overall my experience was favorable, especially not having much to choose from.

If you are staying at the Marriott the best part of your stay will be Iron and Oak. The drinks are made to perfection, and are honestly a work of art! My friend had the blue lemon drop which is instagram ready, but do not miss out on the old fashioned! It’s one of the best you will ever have and if you request it from bartender Derrick it will arrive in a style unique to San Francisco/Oakland. The drinks are second to only the service from the staff who are educated and make fantastic recommendations. Cheers!

I usually endure the on-site food selection at hotels on business trips but, not this time!!! The vegan curry was so good I had it two nights running! The truffle fries were great as well. The beers on tap are mostly local and good!

Google
As far as hotel restaurants go, this is definitely on the lower end. I got the steak, and it just wasn't good. There's a strange aftertaste with the food. Frankly, the food in the M lounge was superior. I know it comes out of the same kitchen, but regardless it was better. I got the creme brulee tart, and it was awful. Gas station pastries are better.

Had a couple meals here during my recent stay. Food is not bad. Enjoyed the service

This is my second time staying at this hotel and second time having a burger wanted to see if it was just as good as the first time and it is.!! I love the consistency in the food that they put out. Highly recommended when in Oakland.!!

Yelp
Iron & Oak - Oakland Located on the 2nd floor of the Convention Center/Marriott Hotel, this spot offers a solid breakfast experience. The service is amazing--friendly and attentive staff make the visit worthwhile. While the French toast and pancakes stand out, the rest of the breakfast menu leans toward classic staples: good, but nothing extravagant. Since I've only been for breakfast, I can't speak to their lunch or dinner options, so I'll give it a tentative 3.5 stars with room to revisit once I've had the full restaurant experience.

Yelp
I thought the French Toast was pretty tasty. While I normally just have pancakes, my serve did me right by suggesting the Brioche French Toast. They do have breakfast "packages" that include coffee. Decide before you order how important that is to you. I sat at a table, was able to relax and observe. Tommy was one of the servers. Great attitude, super helpful, took care of me well; hot coffee, cream & Splenda. Serving Starbucks coffee means it's hot and strong. Not that many places open on a Saturday before 9 am so this turned out to be an excellent option. Located on the 2nd floor, this might be your next stop when you are in the area.

Yelp
Always great to have a solid restaurant on site at your hotel. They have some great options. The chicken was cooked ok. Could've been a little better, but was solid and hit the spot. Side salad and extra broccoli kept me on course. The service and attention from my server was impeccable. She did an amazing job and really made me feel welcomed in the spot. This was the type of service every restaurant should provide. Great job.

Yelp
We are familiar with upscale casual at a premium and Iron & Oak certainly fits within that price point, but it falls short of fine dining quality. The decor is modern, minimal, and very open. I don't think the architect had customer comfort in mind when designing this restaurant, because the vaulted, open ceiling/side gives a very cold, echoey experience. Do not expect an intimate experience here; rather it feels more like you are on display for anyone who walks past and the other restaurant patrons. The harsh hotel lighting does nothing to soften that impression. In terms of food, there were several flaws that could be acceptable at a lower price point but should not occur at this level. The plates seemed like they were not warmed prior to plating of the food. As a result of that and the restaurant being incredibly cold, the smaller dishes arrived cold (e.g. the sliders). There was also mold on one of the hard cheeses that should not typically be molded due to the low moisture content. I simply cut the molded part off, but the chef should have paid closer attention to notice that before serving the guest. Other than that, the crackers, meat selection, candied nuts, fig jam, and cracked peppercorn mustard were good. The flavor combinations were excellent. The flavor profile of the sliders was off somehow and we did not care to finish them. The steak and Caesar salad were good. The steak was seared to perfection and had a great flavor. It is too bad that the restaurant was so cold, which caused both the steak and sliders to go cold very quickly. Dessert was phenomenal - we absolutely loved the creme brulee-inspired egg tart and the dark chocolate gelato. Our server was very accommodating when we asked for whipped cream on the side to go with our gelato. The service was excellent. Plating was visually appealing and our server checked on us frequently. We received quality service and our food was delivered very quick. Definitely a positive, seamless experience from a customer perspective. Overall there are definitely flaws here that make it a bit underwhelming for the cost. We spent less at Fleming's for better overall food quality / taste, and customer comfort than we did here. Considering the competition in the East Bay for pricier upscale dining, I think Iron & Oak is not the worst place ever but it is a miss for us.

Yelp
I ordered to-go food and ate at the bar while staying at the hotel. Service for both options was great! My food was ready in a reasonable time. The burger and truffle fries were delicious. The burger was well-cooked and the fries were perfectly crispy and flavorful. The blood orange cake was the only thing I did not like. I thought it would be more cake-like based on the description but it had more sorbet inside than cake.

Yelp
I was out running errands and decided to come to this restaurant. When I entered I was greeted by staff and seated immediately. The waiter was friendly and very attentive. I ordered the iron and oak cheeseburger with fries and side salad. The burger was cooked well done. The burger came with house aioli, lettuce, tomato, onion, aged cheddar, pickles, avocado on brioche bun. The burger was delicious and the fries were fresh. The salad was good. Ambiance is very customer friendly.

Yelp
Iron & Oak is the restaurant in the Oakland Marriott City Center. I only stayed in the hotel for one evening and went to the restaurant for breakfast. It was early, and only a few people were there. I was immediately greeted and given coffee (a must for that time of day). As I reviewed the menu, the avocado toast caught my eye. I know it's a cliche today, but it sounded great. (They also have gluten-free bread.) I watched the news on their TV, and the toast was served promptly. It is unique. There was toast, avocado, radishes, green onion, and an egg on each one. I know there was more on the toast, but I don't remember what. All-in-all, the service was great, as was the food. The coffee was also good. And, the price was reasonable for a Marriott Hotel.

Yelp
Pathetic service .. waited one hour and 25 min for a simple order . The manager and waiter just came after one hour and 30 min and recommended to cancel the order because they don't have staff to cook the food

Tony K.

Yelp
Pretty solid spot for a hotel restaurant. A bit expensive, but the food is decent. Service is good, but there weren't many guests, so I expected nothing less. Decent atmosphere. I just wish the bartenders were a bit more knowledgeable. Had to settle for a martini when the bartender didn't know what a tequila sunshine was...only one of the most popular tequila cocktails. Come on.

Yelp
I'm here for a conference and saw they had Starbucks coffee here. I ordered a chai tea latte and for the price, I can't justify what I got. They have a small and medium. I ordered a medium, I paid and thought I paid for a medium size. It was 7.72 plus gratuity. The guy hands me a small 8 ounce cup, I tried to ask about it but apparently it is what I paid for. I really needed at least the medium size (I usually drink a venti). I feel like I got half my order. I left the counter wondering if I can find a Starbucks on way out of town later. Looking at all the prices they are more expensive than any other hotel or airport I have been in.

Yelp
I was extremely pleased with this meal. Due to an onion allergy they had to prepare them slightly different but I loved every bite. I actually overate because my food was so good. The truffle fries were delicious and I couldn't stop eating them. I definitely recommend this place, especially if you're staying at the hotel!
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is located on the second floor of marriot hotel and you see flies flying around your food which was so annoying. I had to stay at the hotel and because the neighborhood is not safe at night I had to go to Iron & Oak; otherwise, I would go somewhere else.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I asked the waiter what he suggested and he said the avocado toast so I decided to give it a try...well, BAD CHOICE! It was basically a very bland guacamole on soggy toast. No flavor and very mushy. Service was excellent but food was not.
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
We dropped in here for a business lunch before an event at the Marriott. Despite the sign asking us to "seat ourselves," the waiter did guide us to a table. Ambiance was very nice. Restaurant had modern seating and big old tv tuned to thee Young and the Restless (without sound or closed caption so you really don't know what's going on). Menu is very limited. Either you get a salad, soup or a sandwich. I ordered a turkey blat. Although they toasted the plain white bread, the turkey was stone cold. The food was underwhelming. It reminds me of hospital cafeteria food. I did like the crispy fries that came with the sad sandwich but it's not enough to make me come back. That sandwich was $18 too. For $18, shouldn't the sandwich be hot instead of just the plain white bread?
google avatar

Kainani K.

Yelp
Excellent customer service and awesome burgers I'm staying at the Marriott hotel for work and stumbled across the restaurant while looking for somewhere to eat. The prices are a little high but the burger was worth it! The bun was nice and toasty, my patty was thick and cooked the way I wanted it, the butter lettuce was nice and crispy, onions were beautifully caramelized, and the cheese perfectly melted
google avatar

Brandi L.

Yelp
Derrick and Ignacio took good care of me and my friend. Even though it was a busy night, they were attentive and engaging.
google avatar

Daphne L.

Yelp
Came for lunch during a conference I was attending at this hotel. The server made a weird joke about them not having water. The food was ok- my turkey sandwich was standard and a little pricey for lunch. Probably won't be back but I can see the appeal of convenience if you are staying at this hotel.

Mario D. C.

Yelp
This is my second experience staying at this hotel and second time enjoying a burger. Wanted to see if it was just as delicious as the first time and it is.!! I love the consistency in the service that they put out. Highly recommended when in California.!!

Yelp
Nice relaxed evening watching the Warrior Lakers game with nice drinks and comfort food. Friendly service. Decent food.
google avatar

Yelp
Iron & Oak is one of the best business hotel restaurants I have eaten at and given our team was at the Oakland Marriott for four weeks, we had a lot of dinners here. The salmon is great - on its own as an entree or as an addition to the caesar or kale salad. The burger is also delicious. It's huge, so be hungry or split with someone. The tater tots were a hit as were the shrimp tacos. The staff is great too! For parties of five or more, be sure to check your receipt because they add a gratuity, which they didn't point out at first and we double-tipped. This is super annoying and would ordinarily reduce the star rating, but when we brought this to the attention of hotel management, it was rectified.
google avatar

Tammy R.

Yelp
I would give it 5 stars just for my new favorite bartender, Karim. That guy is a true mixologist and has the best and friendliest personality. Thank you for making our early birthday night special! The restaurant was decent. $18 for a small Caesar salad (when the menu states $12). The loaded tots were actually pretty good and breakfast was fair. The toast was really good - crunchy exterior with a soft chew inside. Overall - one of my better experiences at a Marriott restaurant.
google avatar

Rose P.

Yelp
The only reason why I gave this 4 in lieu of 5 stars is because it doesn't open until 4p. That's inconvenient for business travelers who are on east coast time. Other than that, the food (I only had the hummus plate to go), the service (I wish I remembered his name) and the cocktails were all 5 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
Easter evening, with the Grace of God, our daughter had a proposal earlier in the day and we were staying at the Marriott, (needless to say, we had a big day) and we wanted to order via delivery, but they do not offer the same selection compared to the "in person restaurant menu." I went downstairs 30 min before closing, a gentleman named Shafi served me. He recommended wine as a I waited for my "to go order" and also offered me the "chef special." The ambiance was relaxing, and I didn't feel rushed even though I ordered 30 min before kitchen closes. Shafi the waiter, was real professional and so was the tall gentleman who re-filled my water. I ended up eating my to go order there since Shafi was so kind that I enjoyed his service. A great waiter can really make a big difference on a relaxing evening. Thank you Shafi...God bless you for helping our evening more pleasant and relaxing.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
Yogurt parfait was a great choice for breakfast. Coffee was good. Servers were great. Prices are high, but everything seems to be a decent quality.
google avatar

Giovanna R.

Yelp
Staff was nice and service was good. However, given it's inside the Marriott and with a convention center, it was not the most inviting/fun energy. The food was also ok, and the place didn't look like the pictures.

Theresa W.

Yelp
Derrick was awesome. Very nice and personable. It was nice to have a smiling face after a long day of traveling.

Yelp
Iron & Oak Restaurant and Bar Located within Oakland Marriott City Center While preparing to attend the Annual Black Joy Parade yesterday, seven friends stopped in the hotel for a quick bite at 10 am After we ordered, paid for our food, and grabbed a seat, we were then told that we had to leave the premises. The staff said that the hotel had been totally bought out and that no one except conference attendees could be in the hotel or eat in the restaurant. . We were the only people of color (other that the service staff and hotel security) and we were pretty much escorted out of the building. As 7 highly educated, professional, and well-travelled Black women (who are Bonvoy members), this entire situation was Unbelievable. As we were leaving, I saw the manager and confirmed that this strange request for us to leave was true. Despite their being no signage anywhere and the posted hours being Hours of Operation: Breakfast daily 6:30am - 11am Grab and Go 11am - 1pm All Day menu/Bar daily 4pm - 11pm It was reminiscent of the days when businesses would take Black people's money, but wouldn't let you actually eat or been seen at the establishment. Do better Marriott!
google avatar

Mamie D.

Yelp
Very overpriced, but I definitely enjoyed their Caesar Salad especially the the dressing. It tastes like it's homemade. It's very good quality and flavor.

Yelp
James was the BEST server!! Thank you for making our friends birthday so special. And good luck in Hawaii when you retire! Marriott, be so grateful to have such an amazing server. -Camryn Moss

Yelp
strong black coffee small but clean breakfast burrito good staples, like bagel and fruit we were in town for a concert and i don't think anything is open very early at all nearby; it's fairly pricey relative to what you'd probably pay elsewhere but is it decent? absolutely the higher than average rating i'm giving is for the staff: they were super nice and allowed us to keep some things in their freezer, until it was time for us to leave and get on our plane home thank you for the hospitality! and for your team's kindness :)
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
For an in hotel restaurant, Iron & Oak was DELICIOUS!!! I was staying at the hotel during a conference and my coworkers and I decided to eat at the restaurant/bar instead of going out and finding a place. The best decision as it was delicious and great pricing! My coworker had the steak, and stated it was really good and ranged around $45. I had the cheeseburger, they made it medium rare and it was JUICY AND TASTEFUL. None of us had any complaints about our foods. The service was great, they were tentative and they were nice and kept track of us when we moved from the bar to the top golf suite. Which is the next thing about it, even though it's a bit cramped in the area, it was still very fun!
google avatar

Yelp
Iron and Oak is a nice little restaurant bar. I've been here several times because of the location, the prices are pretty high and no happy hour. My coworker and I like to go here because it is close by our office. We will come by for a glass of wine, before parting ways and heading home. It's a nice little spot and low key after work, unless there is a big conference. I had a breakfast meeting here once and the food was pretty good. A little more upscale and the fresh squeezed juice was a good eye opener.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
It seems like an upscale restaurant with hardly anything on the menu to choose from. Very disappointed in menu. I truly don't get it
google avatar

Xx X.

Yelp
Menu is very limited. Obviously not much traffic through the restaurant. Service was fine. Food was ok. If you're stuck in house or your company is paying then you could certainly do worse. But you could also do better, I'd hope.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I moved to Oakland in 2003. The first place I visited was the Marriott bar. I love the Marriott and their staff everywhere I go. The staff was quick, helpful, warm and accommodating. I got to know Kiwan, the bartender well. He pointed me to great Oakland spots as well as must sees outside the city. He always took the time to engage with me, comment on a Warriors game, refill my drink, offer an appetizer. This was my go-to place for crowds or groups. After a while I went less frequently. Now, I find out Kiwan is no longer employed due to new management (from the bar staff). I hope Im wrong. Kiwan was everything I loved about this place.
google avatar

Yelp
The pretzel with beer cheese and burger are good choices! I think next time I'd rather dine for breakfast see what else is good.
google avatar

Josh D.

Yelp
Located on the 2nd floor of the Marriott hotel. Seems to be the only hotel restaurant. food here is alright, but a little pricey for the quality. Food from favorite to least: 1. Salmon sandwich: the sandwich was not bad. Salmon was "blackened", but didn't have much flavor (nor did the sandwich as a whole) Garlic aoli also not very strong flavor. was expecting those thick fresh potato fries, but got what I think were thin oven baked fries from Costco, unsalted 2. Breakfast items: the breakfast items were basically eggs, meat or avocado and then a bunch of carbs (hash browns and whole wheat toast). I think I could make the same thing myself for around 5 bucks. Got charged 20 +tip here. Coffee didn't taste particularly appetizing, and orange juice concentrate was alright. Service was pretty good. I've definitely had worse. It doesn't make up for the fact they they are charging quite a bit for cheap food, but I suppose convenience is a factor as well.

Yelp
This vibrant, somewhat noisy but fun pub-like restaurant was a welcome treat after several days of backcountry skiing in the Sierra. The staff were friendly, courteous and efficient. I couldn't have asked for more. The food was great. I selected a rather hardy meal (Chicken Scaloppini) with mushroom gravy and roasted corn-on-the-cob. But there were lighter choices as well. The desserts were also excellent, including a chocolate cake. I was by myself and just catching up on my cell phone messages so the big screen tv and the groups at other tables were background. However, I had brief and enjoyable chats with my waiter (Shari, I believe) and the manager (Martin) when they heard I had been skiing. I felt welcomed and really enjoyed myself. A warm spot in downtown Oakland on a Thursday night!
google avatar

Iyawna A.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite escapes from the hussle and bustle of downtown Oakland. Great drinks, clean and modern atmosphere, never too packed and customer service is always consistent with a friendly and personal vibe. This one bartender made me my favorite Madori Sour ever and I still can't get it out of my head. Madori Sours will never be the same elsewhere.... Thank you!

Yelp
This is a Marriott hotel restaurant/bar. It's quite well decorated and I love the open concept lounge. Took the escalators up one flight and there we were. I got to try here whenever my friend suggested that we have brunch and dinner here. This is my second time I've eaten here. I got caesar salad, cheese platter, burger and fries, tacos, wings beer and mojito and green freshness. Drinks are very good I love it! I enjoyed all the foods and drinks here. Staff has been very nice and helpful. But prices are pretty high and no happy hour. It'a great option if you're staying here and don't feel like venturing out. I would come by again given the chance.
google avatar

Yelp
While staying at the hotel, we decided to go downstairs and grab a bite to eat and watch some football. We were seated immediately. Ordered a drink, Loaded Tater Tots & a Burger. Drink - Alameda IPA was delicious. Tots - Loaded with cheese and bacon bits. Burger - Ordered "medium rare" and got "well done". Awful. Dry. No flavor. Drinks were good. Burger was not!
google avatar

Abbey T.

Yelp
Food was okay and came out fast but the service was terrible and was severely overpriced. we were under the assumption that you'd need a reservation when you actually didn't it's pretty much just a lounge in the Marriott best part of dinner here was the company I had to experience it

Yelp
Alright, Iron and Oak! I think I'm crushin' on you! Man, how am I JUST now hearin' about yo' sexy self? Where have you been hidin'...Humm? Just an FYI: You don't have to stay at the Marriott City Center in order to visit Iron and Oak; it's open for anyone and all! Whether you are staying at the hotel, visiting for a conference or just looking for a place to sit and have a good drink. Now that we got that out of the way, let's get straight to the chase, shall we? Iron and Oak is located on the second floor of the Marriott. It's a pleasant, upscale type of atmosphere with food and drinks slightly expensive, but hey, you're in a hotel restaurant so what does one expect, right? They have TV's all throughout the bar where you can watch the games. I came here on a Friday night with my girlfriends and was quite pleased with this restaurant! It's not your ordinary place to come and sit, eat and chill. It's more of a hip, classy, bar and restaurant lounge with an open feel to it. The menu offers a little bit of everything for everyone and those drinks, Oh Baby. YESSS! Those drinks are off the chain, honey! Let's just say, my bartender/waiter, Willie, was hookin' it UPP! My girlfriends and I ordered the fully loaded tater tots and chicken wings. For drinks, I ordered the La Bamba Margarita and the Tommy's Watermelon Smash. As stated before, the service here is incredible! Our bartender, Willie took very good care of us! Although this place does get quite packed in the evening, we were never rushed to hurry and finish our food. They have a very good drink selection for a small, quaint restaurant. I was surprised to see that. I hear they also serve breakfast, I must come and check it out! This place is packing a big punch! The menu is truly fit for a foodie, come in and enjoy!
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Really nice staff. Not a large selection on the menu but adequate for hotel guests. This is the third time I've eaten here. The cheese quesadilla and the loaded tot starters are fantastic. The drinks are very good. The spicy mule is a nice modification to a regular Moscow mule. James makes it really well. The best thing really is the service. Every visit the staff has been very nice and helpful.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Staying at the Marriott and, even after reading the other reviews, was desperate for a quick bite. Their food is the most overpriced I have ever eaten. I got the burger, 'cheese board', and hummus. You can get a better burger at McDonald's. Not overtly terrible, just not good. The cheese board had melted honey stuck to the bottom of the plastic, most of the cheese stuck in it. The only redeeming part of the meal was the garlic hummus and pita. Staff was great, and the meal came out super quick.
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
Decent food. Super big portion!! Can be a negative or a positive. Since I dislike having leftovers, I would suggest splitting a plate. There's way too much!! Its more on the pricey end for breakfast. Does that correlate with quality? I don't think so, it's the same ol' breakfast that you will find anywhere. If you order OJ, they will pour you some Minute Maid straight for any grocery store. I'd only go here if I was lazy and was staying in the hotel. Bottom line: yummy average food for a big price tag
google avatar

Leyla T.

Yelp
Good food, but it is PACKED. It gives you so much food. It is good though! I would recommend the butternut squash mac n' cheese!

Yelp
Great food and service for hotel. Very friendly and attentive servers. Relaxing and happy energetic vibe
