Where to Stay and What to Eat in Tokyo's Most Popular Neighborhoods

"A popular spot just next to The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo where first-timers should try the porcini soy sauce ramen. It’s open all night; go in the early evening to skip the line." - The MICHELIN Guide

"The chef displays his originality in each bowl as he pursues a unique interpretation of ramen. Broths of clam, spiny lobster, free-range chicken and beef combine to create a soup of satisfying depth. Paste of porcini mushrooms and truffles switches up the flavour of soy-sauce ramen. Salt ramen is infused with yuzu flavoured butter to impart a creamy fragrance. ‘Iruca’ comes from the Japanese for ‘dolphin’, a symbol of peace and a message of friendship to spread across the oceans." - Michelin Inspector

422 restaurants, including 2 new Two Starred establishments, spotlighted in the MICHELIN Guide Tokyo 2023

"At ramen restaurant IRUCA TOKYO, the owner-chef discovered an original soup by researching synergistic effects with umami. Blending dashi from chicken, pork, shrimp and shellfish, he created a soup with layer upon layer of umami. The soy sauce is prepared with mushrooms and truffles, and the salt with ginger and spices." - MICHELIN Guide Asia

Usually I’m not one to leave negative reviews since I know restaurants rely heavily on good feedback. But this was genuinely one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in Japan/ my dining out experience . I ordered two ramen bowls, a rice bowl, a fried side, and extra meat for my group. Despite clearly ordering more than enough food, the staff refused to let one person sit, saying “1 soup per person.” When I decided to leave instead, I asked if I could take the order to-go. They refused. Even though they take payment upfront, they also refused a refund, saying the food was already “delivered,” even though I hadn’t been allowed to take it. They also refused to let me take the rice bowl to-go for the other member of my group. What made the experience worse was the attitude. The staff openly laughed when I asked for takeout (their own POS system even has a “takeout” button in English), and they rushed me through the meal. Not a single sign or posted instruction anywhere in the shop says “1 bowl per person” or “no takeout,” so the inconsistency felt unfair and targeted. I also don’t believe in wasting food (meat)— part of my Buddhist upbringing — so I ate the meat out of respect, but left the rest partially untouched because of how uncomfortable the environment felt. Overall: unwelcoming, inconsistent rules, and not friendly toward foreigners. I won’t be returning, and hope this review helps others avoid the same experience.

This ramen shop is one of the top 20 ramen spots in Tokyo and does not require reservations—all you need to do is queue patiently (which I don’t mind at all; great food is worth the wait!). I’ve visited this shop three times across my last two trips to Tokyo. If it hadn’t been closed during the New Year period, I would have gone even more. The truffle ramen is a must-order. The soup is incredibly rich and well-balanced, and the wontons, along with the chicken and pork slices, are exceptionally flavorful. Sitting at the counter and watching the staff prepare the ramen feels like watching an art form in motion. This is, by far, the best ramen I’ve ever had in Japan. I definitely will visit again in my next Japan trip.

I recently tried Iruca Tokyo in Roppongi, and the ramen was very good ; definitely high quality with a deep umami flavor. I lived the combination of 4 types of broth which was included in the “special” ramen. I could really taste tge different elemnts throughout the eating experience and in the aftertaste. The broth was quite shio-forward, which isn’t my personal favorite since I tend to prefer less salty ramen, but it was still well-made and satisfying. However they do have a yuzu option, which i sadly did not try, which i might go back to try. Luckily, I got in during the first seating, because by the time I left there was a long line of people waiting ; even in the sweltering heat! That said, I wouldn’t wait in line for it. While the ramen itself is solid, it’s not something that blew me away or felt truly unique compared to other spots in Tokyo. Regarding the service, I want to clarify that I understand ramen is typically a quick meal ; you don’t expect to linger or have long conversations with staff. Still, the service felt minimal and somewhat transactional, like they were focused mostly on getting the ramen out the door rather than creating a memorable experience. The staff were polite, but it wasn’t as warm or engaging as some other ramen shops I’ve been to. Overall, Iruca Tokyo delivers a quality bowl of ramen, especially if you enjoy a strong umami and salt-forward flavor. But if you’re looking for an exceptional or immersive experience, it may not quite hit the mark.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It's so good we came back! An unforgettable ramen experience at Iruca Tokyo Roppongi We had two different ramen bowls (porcini mushroom special and Yuzu ramen) at Iruca Tokyo in Roppongi and they were absolutely phenomenal – easily among the best we’ve ever had in Tokyo. Each bowl was a masterclass in flavour: one with a delicate, clear broth topped with silky chashu and herbed butter that melted into umami heaven; the other a rich, shoyu-based beauty with perfectly cooked egg, dumplings, and tender meats. Every element was thought out, balanced, and delicious. We were lucky with the timing – only waited around 10 minutes. The staff were incredibly kind and respectful, and we really appreciated the clear rules. This is a place that values the food and the craft, not just photos or hype. You’re encouraged to savour and respect the meal, and that makes the experience even better. Iruca is not just a meal – it's a reminder of how powerful simple, well-executed food can be. If you're in Tokyo, this is an absolute must!!!

We went to the Roppongi store around 10, made the 1st group Restaurant have around 15 seats, I’ll assume if your arrival before 10:20, you should have the chance go in with 1st round of people The ramen is pretty delicious, it is chicken broth I went to Ginza Hachigo the day before. Both restaurant all have really good favor and all chicken broth base ramen

As a visitor from the U.S., we wanted to have the best authentic ramen experience, and Iruca did not disappoint. Note- there WILL be a line and you will have to wait. We waited 32 minutes after arriving at 5:45pm (just for some context). The entire restaurant is 10 seats, with a side room made for 4. There are no photos allowed in the restaurant so it’s very important to be respectful of that. You will order and pay from a kiosk, which thankfully can swap to English for easy understanding. This is not a restaurant to chitchat with friends and take your time. They expect you to eat, and once you are done you leave. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great ramen that’s lowkey and cheap.

Tried the porcini soy ramen and yuzu shio ramen but definitely preferred the former! The soup base was more fragrant and flavorful compared to yuzu shio. There was a queue during a weekend dinner time and it was because there were few seats inside. The chefs will cook the ramen in front of you.

Possibly our favourite Ramen of all time! A uniquely flavoured soy ramen with porcini mushrooms and truffle. The presentation is second to none. Definitely worth the wait in line.
