The 17 Best Places to Eat in State College, Home of Penn State | Eater

"Located conveniently just a few steps away from both Old Main and the library, this bustling, industrial-looking cafe offers an abundance of choices to keep both busy students and visitors energized throughout the day. Without a doubt, the stars of the show are the bagels, which are made in-house every day. Opt for the ever-popular breakfast special: egg, cheese, and your choice of meat on a freshly baked, buttery bagel. Don’t forget to add fried potatoes to the sandwich or on the side." - Victoria Gough

Google
Great, casual place for a quick, delicious breakfast. It is basically counter service, and then you bring your meal to your table. I had bacon, egg, and cheese on a poppy seed bagel. 🥯 It was fresh, filling, and very tasty. Everything was prepared within a very reasonable time. Place was clean and comfortable. Highly recommend.

A New York bagel shop just across the street from Old Main, Irvings is a great place for incredible breakfast/lunch fare while catching the Penn State vibe. Home of State College’s best and IMO only authentic bagels, they are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, with a selection from plain to Everything. Irvings has lots of cream cheeses and sandwich selections (the Breakfast Special served all-day long), awesome bread and pastries too. Then there’s the drinks, from milkshakes to smoothies, great fresh coffee and plenty of bottled drinks. The main-stay staff knows their stuff; student staff members come and go, and seem to enjoy themselves while working which makes for a better experience. It’s my go-to spot for family breakfasts, coffee with colleagues or clients, or a quick bite with friends. I love Irvings!

Google
I have tried their bagels and muffins. They have great bagels, with option of being served as is or toasted with choice of spreads. Their muffins and pastries are terrific. I am particularly fond of the double chocolate and chocolate chip muffins. The place is very popular and can be quite busy.

Google
Great experience at Irving’s Bagels! I like the atmosphere a lot. Service was friendly and prompt. There are plenty of tables to sit and study a while, and they have additional seating downstairs too, though I believe that is temporarily closed. I had a vanilla iced coffee and an everything bagel with garlic and herb cream cheese. I don’t really like their cream cheese much but it’s okay, I’ll try a pizza bagel next. Prices and vibes are good, and the location is super convenient. I’ll be back!

Google
Irving’s has always been pretty consistent with their quality when it comes to their fresh bread and bagels, smoothies and overall product. All of their breakfast items taste amazing, but I really enjoy going for lunch and getting the pizza bagel. It’s super basic, but they make it taste great.

Google
I try to visit Irving's on each visit to State College, as the bagels are among the best I've ever had, and I often order some extra to take home as well. The Turkey bagel is my favorite sandwich -- real turkey, not lunch meat! Highly recommend!

Google
Good, fast breakfast place in downtown State College, PA. Excellent, fresh sandwiches & wraps. Basically self serve: order at the register, pick up at the counter. Great for eat-in or takeout. A bit more seating would be nice, space is available for it. But we've been there a few times & never had an issue but we tend to be there earlier than the students get up on the weekends.

Google
We were recommended this place on our way to town, and we already had it in our plans to dine here! The service here was friendly and the bagels are very good. There was quite a line and a wait even after we ordered, so just be ready to wait a bit.

Yelp
We had over 20 people in our group and we barely made a dent in the huge capacity of this place. And they have yet another huge downstairs with more seating. Despite the size, it is a highly efficient business serving amazing bagels with all the appropriate addendums, as well as specialty coffee. And different dairy alternatives too. Our group had every possible bagel concoction. I had my usual bagel with cream cheese and lox, quite a breakfast and very tasty Excellent overall.

Yelp
Place was busy this morning around 1030am. No seats were available to eat in but that was OK because my order was to go. It is a place an order and listen for your number to be called type of place so be sure to pay attention. They don't call a number more than once and I saw food sit waiting for the customer for extended periods of time. Food itself is very good, bagels are worth the visit, I went with tomato basil and it did not disappoint. Not 5 stars because I ordered a capacuino with vanilla and there was no vanilla taste to the drink. Would I go back, for sure.

Yelp
Big breakfast spot full of Penn state students. Felt like a Panera but open concept and more affordable. A lot of coffee flavor curious. Everything in the sandwiches tastes fresh. Pesto sandwhich had too many onions.

Yelp
Bagel sandwiches are great here- a true Penn State experience. The bagels themselves are the star of the show, as I believe they're made in house and they're just amazing. Nothing mind blowing but a damn good bagel shop.

Yelp
In 2024 I reviewed Irvings on Google. Now January 2025, they've pared down their offerings and changed their prices, but Irvings remains the best place to get a fresh, authentic bagel in central Pennsylvania. Here's my edited review: A New York bagel shop just across the street from Old Main, Irvings is a great place for incredible breakfast/lunch fare while catching the Penn State vibe. Home of State College's best and IMO only authentic bagels, they are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, with a selection from plain to Everything. Irvings has lots of cream cheeses and sandwich selections (the Breakfast Special served all-day long), awesome bread and pastries too. Then there's the drinks, from steaming coffee and teas to smoothies, soda and plenty of bottled drinks. The main-stay staff knows their stuff; student staff members come and go, and seem to enjoy themselves while working which makes for a better experience. It's my go-to spot for family breakfasts, coffee with colleagues or clients, or a quick bite with friends. I love Irvings!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! My friend and I come every Tuesday after class! Amazing bagels and a super cute spot! Service is quick considering it's usually super busy. Favorite bagel spot in state college!

Yelp
Great place to get a bagel sandwich! Several options to choose from. Great service with a local college town vibe!

Yelp
So damn good. I love their variety of bagel flavors and their cream cheeses are BOMB. Lots of places to sit and the employees here are always kind and welcoming. Couldn't recommend more.

Yelp
I love Irving's breakfast special with garlic cream cheese. Iced latte was a bit light to milk. It's quite noisy around lunch time.

Yelp
Bagels are fresh and tasty. We ordered 2 breakfast bagels (pork roll egg and cheese and sausage egg and cheese), a cup of coffee, and a juice. Sandwiches are made to order, the place was busy, but the service was fast. The in-house coffee blend was really good, as I expected, because on the menu board under Hot Drinks, it is listed as "Really Good Coffee" Giving 4 stars for the bagels and the coffee. Wpuld have been 5 stars, the bagels are on point but one one egg, one slice of cheese, 2 thin slices of pork roll and the sausage was thin and not very flavorful. I'd go back, but I'd order extra meat and cheese.

Yelp
Irving's is a really cute bagel shop and study space. I recommend the bagel sandwiches!

Yelp
I hadn't heard great things about Irving's but that was mostly from folks who had eaten their catered food, not been to the restaurant itself. I decided to try it on a Saturday morning on my walk to work and got a nice big breakfast sandwich (they serve them all day) and a muffin. I think total I spent about $11 for these two items which is a lot, but I enjoyed my sandwich quite a bit. I chose an everything bagel and bacon, then also asked if they could add Mayo to it. The girl taking my order I think got confused because they have pesto Mayo and regular Mayo and in my effort to clarify I just wanted regular, she put both down. The only unfortunate thing is pesto Mayo adds 50 cents to the order, but it tasted good so I wasn't too upset, just something to be aware of. I also asked about mustard because what's a breakfast sandwich without condiments? She said she didn't know if they had mustard so I let it go, and then saw some to go packets of it by the napkins. The sandwich itself was a good size for the price and while it wasn't breathtaking or the best I've ever had, it was delicious and got me off to a good start that day. The muffin was also good, but again nothing remarkable. The restaurant area was a bit busy on a Saturday morning but they still had open seats everywhere and more in the basement. They got my order out quickly and I was on my way (took it to go). I'll probably go back, mainly because it's convenient on my walk to work and good bang for your buck with the food, but it's a solid 3 stars for service and overall food quality and restaurant vibes. Not bad at all, but also not super special.

Yelp
My family came to State College to visit friends, so we decided to take a day to buy PSU souvenirs for our family back home. Started our day here at Irving's with bagel sandwiches and coffee. Omg the tomato and bacon on my bagel was amazing. Loved the coffee, it was perfect for a morning stroll down College Ave shopping. The line goes by fast and if the tables in the main area are full, walk on downstairs for a cool, quiet sitting area. Lots of college students studying and gathering in this area, loved it!

Kayla F.

Yelp
service was actually horrible for someone who works in the high volume food service here in state college. don't bother showing up on weekends or placing mobile orders as it is so out of whack orders take 30-45 min on a previous 30 min wait. not worth the wait for a bagel sandwich. i forgot why i barely come here as a student. Something needs to be fixed about how they prioritize mobiles when they're volume is at peak

Samaria M.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is always great and fresh, even though it's ran by college kids they are respectful and organized

Yelp
Irving's was the perfect breakfast spot for a quick bite (on Labor Day!) Staff was super friendly and welcoming, and despite being crowded our order was out within 15 minutes. We got an iced caramel latte, an iced americano, and 2 breakfast sandwiches for $25. Worth the price for two people. The coffees were both SO good that next time I would probably size up to a medium. The first sandwich (tomato, egg, and cheese on a tomato basil bagel) was good, but the bagel was slightly stale. The second sandwich (Canadian bacon, egg and cheese on an asiago bagel) was delicious. Both of these sandwiches we would order again. The shop was a bit noisy & busy, but they have downstairs seating with nice vibes and it's quieter. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Every time I visit State College I visit Irving's. Best Bagel in State College hands down. Will visit every time I go back.

Yelp
Seeing as there's not much in the way of breakfast in state college, this place is a cheap and convenient eat. For the prices though, the quality should be way better. If you're looking for good bagels, look elsewhere. They have a lot to offer when it comes to wraps, drinks and sandwiches but for a bagel shop, the star of the show is awful. Bagels are dry and tough, and not good at all. $7 for a breakfast bagel here is a rip off. Staff is polite, though they all seem stressed and tired. Dining area is pretty dirty... I know college kids are in and out all day but tables should be cleaned more and there is so much food on the floor. I'd stop in if I was super hungry and there was nothing else around.

Yelp
Best bagel sandwiches in State College!! I get turkey bacon egg & cheese on a sesame bagel and it's incredible every time. Highly suggest ordering ahead online to beat the crowd!
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
At best I'd say 'meh' One of our party liked their bagel sandwich I had a SW salad - lame! Irving could do a lot better! I would not go back.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Definitely good bagels. Rest of the menu looked Good to but all three of us went with a bagel and either cream cheese or butter. C got the salt bagel with butter. It was kind of like eating a pretzel. G got an everything with veggie cream cheese and was a fan. I got the wheat bagel and regular cream cheese and it was very good. Caramel latte was good as well. G had iced chai tea she liked and C a regular coffee -- brand was Really Good Coffee and she confirmed. Seemed to be a family run place with students doing the work and definitely a great place for a quick breakfast.

Keith T.

Yelp
How Irving's does not have a solid 4 stars is a mystery to me. Fresh food, varied menu, convenient location. Efficient and pleasant staff. Reasonably priced, causal atmosphere. Don't pass Irving's up!
google avatar

B Abigail T.

Yelp
Loved Irving's! Not only was the customer service great it was quick! The food was fantastic and the vibe of that place was exactly what I needed when visiting a college town. I will definitely be back again
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Food was wonderful best bagel I've had in a long time it's defiantly worth the trip although it can be a bit crowded.
google avatar

Maryanne G.

Yelp
Good food, great coffee. Place can get packed on the weekends, so be prepared to wait a bit for your order. One complaint - I order the pizza bagel here often - it's very good, but.... three little pieces of pepperoni? Every time? Come on Irving's.... how expensive is pepperoni that you can't put a few more slices on?
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
Pretty decent bagels for State College. Enjoy the tough crust but inside could be chewier.
google avatar

Nicole Q.

Yelp
Great fresh made Bagels and Sandwiches with speedy service! Perfect fuel before our tour of Happy Valley. They even use the creamery schmears!

Yelp
Student at PSU here, Irving's is a place i've been going to quite consistently for the past two semester and can say it's the best place to get a breakfast sandwich in town. Firstly, it's super simple to skip the wait and order online using apple pay. But also Irving's gives you a lot of options on how to do things and that plays into their advantage. For any sandwich whether it's a breakfast sandwich or not you can customize it. I always either get the breakfast sandwich with a toasted poppy bagel and bacon. It's always a 10/10 every time I get it and the eggs are cooked perfectly. I also pretty regularly get a rueben here too with the European rye bread, it's always a good choice and i've never not liked it. They also have tubs of homemade spreads you can get that are really good as well. The only things I can really knock them for is sometimes when you order bagels with butter, they come smothered with way too much butter. Also it's a bit pricey for coffee, but it's not the worst in the world. Overall Irving's is a state college main stay with the best breakfast sandwiches in town. If you're looking for a quite bite anywhere between breakfast and lunch, this is the place to go.

Lori E.

Yelp
When every other restaurant has a 40- to 60-minute wait time to even get to a table for breakfast and it's parent's weekend at PSU, Irving's was our best choice. We ordered one bagel w/cream cheese, one breakfast bagel sandwich, and a breakfast wrap, plus an iced chai, a berry smoothie, and a large iced coffee. It took about 10 minutes to get our drinks....another 35-40 after that to get our food, but kudos to the young lady processing the orders. She was efficient and literally never stopped moving! Ultimately, on busy times like game days and parents weekends they need more cooking staff behind the counter, but overall, our food was made correctly and was very tasty, and our drinks were perfect. Ambiance...well, it was noisy and crowded, but it's a college town, so that's expected.

Makayla K.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast with the family after a game and even though packed, the food was amazing and didn't take too long at all! There's a lot of space for seating inside and a few tables outside. A really nice place to sit and eat or grab food and a coffee to go!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I thought this place was fine. It is nothing to cry home about, and there are much better bagel/breakfast places in the area. Usually has quite the long line, which is understandable due to its' prime location. But the sandwiches I've tried from here just aren't great and are a bit overpriced in my opinion. Try bagel crust, or toasted bagel instead.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
I know there are crumbs when slicing bagels. But take some time every hour and clean this dump. Dirty tables, dirty crumb covered counters. Ick
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
need a quick breakfast sandwich, this place can turn out 100's of them fast,. lox, on thier own various begals, egg and cheese with bacon or sausage. you can even get lunch sandwiches early in the morning. turkey club on house made breade

Emily S.

Yelp
Bagel was not good. Dry bagel with old tomato and had to cut in half myself. Ordered bacon and was only a tiny bit on the other half that I had.

Haley L.

Yelp
Quick service. Usually love it here, but am disappointed with the quality control. My cheese and bagel were burnt and the filings were not properly distributed. Disappointing since I love there bagels.

S P.

Yelp
There are several better places for bagels in State College. The bagel we ordered first came without an egg, even though the order was just cheese and an egg. The crew was gracious and apologetic, and sent out a new bagel that had eggshells in it. That aside, we ordered a veggie morning wrap and it was totally bland. The coffee was also not anything special. It's a huge place and there's a lot of places to sit. It's a shame that the food was not decent.

Jacqueline G.

Yelp
Delicious bagel and yummy coffee! Friendly staff too! Seemed like a really cute local establishment!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Bagels are great but the wait during the morning rush is unbearable. You have to wait 20 minutes plus to get to the register, and then another 20 minutes to actually get your food. There should be an order kiosk type situation in which you self order and then wait. There would be more screens for people to key themselves, and the girls that would've been on register can be re-tasked to fulfilling orders. This place has good sandwiches, don't get me wrong, but the long wait times are sometimes so unbearable to the point where I don't even bother stopping by anymore.
google avatar

Felishia Y.

Yelp
Flavor wise, it is good. The wait time was short too! My only complain is that the bagel i got was very dense. Not sure if i got unlucky that day but i might come back to try again in the future
google avatar

Frank L.

Yelp
I would actually rate this place more of a 3.5 Pretty cool concept of bagel sandwiches. Havent really seen too many of those around. You can also choose any bagel u want when u order the sandwich, and they have a bunch of options. Execution wise everything tasted pretty good/solid. The reason why this joint isnt a 4 is the price is a lil heavy for the amount of food ur getting. Some sandwiches are like 7 bucks. The bagels were around 4-5. I could see everthing goin for bout a dollar less in my opinion. Pizza bagel ($4.25 + .$75 for pepperoni)- Reminded me of a big bagel bite. Obviously it was much better than a bagel bite...very cheesy which is good and good amount of pepperonis. You hafta add pepperonis for an extra 75 cents. It was pretty good but I dont think i'd get it again. Breakfast special ($3.99 + $.50 for each additional item)- I got this with Canadian bacon which is ham lol. I also got it with tomato of which I dont think I got any...(I didnt remember i got tomato till i started writing this...oh well). It was a good breakfast bagel...gooey and cheesy. Kinda wish the eggs were a lil runnier but I still enjoyed it. Overall I enjoyed my food and Ill probably be back to try their other items.

Nsrchofrnr S.

Yelp
Deanna was absolutely amazing in putting together bagels & sweets for my daughter's team. Everyone enjoyed it. Great personalized service!
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
I've only ever had Irving's catering but that still earns them a 4 star review based on the bagels, cream cheese spreads and mini quiches. Typically at events/meetings we have an assortment of bagels - I've never had a bagel from Irving's I didn't like. But their veggie cream cheese, OH MY WORD, I'd give it that alone 5 stars!!! I've never stepped foot in their door but would check it out based on other reviews and my experiences with their catering.
google avatar

Tyrone M.

Yelp
I came here for a casual dinner with a friend. Cool interior and convenient location. Service was friendly and pretty quick. I got a BLT and a Joe Papaya smoothie; both were very good. My friend got a grilled cheese and a Laguna Peach smoothie, and she also enjoyed both. Will definitely return.

Jake E.

Yelp
Usually I would give Irving's a 4/5 stars, but today I came in 45 minutes before they closed and they said they could not do wraps or sandwich's because they already closed those parts of the kitchen off. Because I didn't want to deal driving anywhere else I still ordered a bagel and smoothie. 45 minute early for not ordering certain items is just ridiculous.
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
I grew up going here. And then, having lived in cities around the world, I can say Irving's is my all time favorite bagel breakfast sandwich. I still crave them! They fueled me during college, paired with a smoothie. Their catering is awesome for meetings or backyard parties. Super friendly and fun staff, too. A must-stop when passing through State College.

Alyssa M.

Yelp
I'm not sure who thought this was okay to serve?? Overpriced and slow service for poor food. I was overcharged and they would not credit me back my money. My bagel is burnt, unevenly cut, sloppy. Rude employees and even worse bagels.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
The only reason I come here anymore is because they're the only place downtown that has lox. Take that as you will.
google avatar

Devan H.

Yelp
If you're a Penn State student, you've most likely posted up at Irving's at least once; even if you were just meeting someone who was already there. It's a really spacious area and the high ceilings and open layout really spreads everything out from the tables to where the food is prepared. They are big on quality in their ingredients and the Manager, John, is a hardworking guy to keep everything together. Sometimes the music and conversations can make it loud to concentrate, but perhaps you can try finding a seat downstairs. Awesome Menu! The menu has such a large variety, where it can most likely grab something you're in the mood for. From breakfast style specials, lunch/seasonal sandwiches and wraps, smoothies, coffee and regular pastries, it can be hard to pick. Each option allows you some flexibility to customize what you want. Breakfast Special: I got the standard Breakfast Special (bacon, egg, cheese on a plain bagel). The bagels are great, toasted but chewy. The entire sandwich tasted delicious and would probably eat another because it tasted so good. If you're looking for a breakfast spot, this is a must. One of the best breakfast bagels in State College. Also, I didn't get it this time, but the brownies they serve near the front counter are absolutely awesome. First, they are huge and very filling, but I like brownies to be soft and chewy and that is exactly what these are like. I'll tell you this, the people who work here work HARD. It's definitely not easy with the rush they get from time to time; especially big Penn State weekends. They try to get everyone's order as quick as they can and I think they do a great job. Irving's is always on the list whenever I make it back to State.
