Beloved Burger Spot Irv’s Is Expanding to Orange County | Eater LA

"Expanding to Orange County for the first time, Irv’s Burgers opened a 600-square-foot grab-and-go outlet in Newport Beach on Thursday, February 29; it serves the same burgers, chili cheese fries, soft-serve milkshakes, and playful doodles that made it a legend and will add breakfast in April, including a burger-burrito hybrid with a chopped beef patty, Irv’s sauce, onions, eggs, cheddar cheese, and tater tots wrapped in a flour tortilla. Originally opened as Queen’s Burgers in 1946 along Route 66, the shop is now run by Lawrence Longo with investor Sonia Hong, joins existing stores in West Hollywood, Malibu, Mid-Wilshire, and Las Vegas, and the Newport location is at 600 E. Bay Avenue, Newport Beach, CA 92661; it is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Cathy Chaplin

Google
This is a small burger joint. One of the guys was nice enough to let my dog in to get out of the heat. That was kind. We all ordered burgers and they are big. We should of ordered just two fries and we could of shared since it ended up being plenty of food. Super delicious and the kids were happy.

Google
Paid a whole EXTRA 4$ to have a beef patty added onto my BLT, just to get no patty at all. Honestly ridiculous to miss something that important ESPECIALLY if im paying EXTRA for it. Food was okay but theyll skimp u short for what you pay for. Maybe dont get extras so you don’t get scammed outta your meal.

Google
Great place with great food and friendly service. Grab a quick bite after whale watching and enjoy the outdoor patio a block east of building, plenty of seating.

Google
This is a great burger place but I don't know if it's worth the hassle of finding parking at Balboa Pier. It's a place to go if you already have plans to go to the beach and need a place to eat. Got the best burger and it was great. Their fries are pretty solid too. Now is it worth $17 for the burger and fries? Eh that's totally up to you and how you like your burgers. For me, In N Out is always gonna be in my heart so I would say no it's not worth it but def a good experience! Still a great burger shop and hopefully they continue to do well

Google
Great burger and bun. The chili is really good with fries. Friendly workers. Pretty reasonably priced considering it’s right in the fun zone by the ferry. The fries and tater tots portion sizes are huge. Cool vibes inside too.

Google
Came here for a nice outing for me and the kids and not only was it hot and fresh tasty and fast but it was a bonus to get free Ferris wheel tickets for every combo purchased !

Google
Took my kids for a walk around the Balboa Fun Zone and decided to try this spot—and wow, we were not disappointed! We ordered four of the Best Burgers . Honestly, they were even better than In-N-Out. Each burger is made fresh to order and cooked perfectly well done. The fries were just as good! The customer service stood out too—the staff was super attentive the moment we walked in and quick to take our order. My family and I had a great time here and we’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
The quality and quantity of the food here is phenomenal. We ordered the classic cheeseburger, 2 soda floats, and a turkey burger. The burger was $10 but was massive and absolutely delicious! The fries were perfectly crisp and service was amazing. 10/10 we are definitely eating here again!

Yelp
We did an online order and made a mistake, so we tried calling their phone number but it hung up. We tried multiple times and it just kept happening. A bit frustrating. Our food was ready super quickly. Estimated time was 15 min but it was ready in about 5. I just didn't enjoy this burger at all! It was a very thin patty, which I typically like, but this one kind of lacked flavor. I also didn't like the Irv's sauce. Super tiny storefront with just a few window seats but a nice view of the fun zone/ferry.

Yelp
This review is overdue for 2 years and I'd say Irv's is STILL in my top 5 favorite burger in OC and #1 favorite for "smash" burger! That's saying a lot since there's so many burger places in OC. Our order is always: - the best burger on the menu - the original roadhouse burger combo add extra patty) - tater tots or onion rings The burgers are the best ratio of patty and buns! The patty would ooze with such juice. The buns are soft enough to soak the patty juice and not rip. It's juicy, crispy and soft all in one bite -- combined with the grilled onions, melted cheese and just PERFECTION. Everytime we come here, mostly late nights, the staffs: Isabel, Jaden and Brundon would ALWAYS provide the best experience. Brundon always rang us up and is always friendly. Jaden made great smashed burgers where the ends are burnt to the crisp! Isabel moves fast and would ring us up and then smash the burgers--multitasker! Again, best smashed burger in OC and top 5 in OC!

Yelp
With our oldest son in town from Washington DC, we were in Newport Beach for whale watching and, famished after the sailing but not interested in a full sit down restaurant experience, we opted for Irv's. Worth the try! We ordered a "World's Best Burger" combo and a Patty Melt Combo. The burgers were served smash style, crispy and crackling exterior, beefy interior complemented by American cheese and all the fixings. The fries are excellent- Skinny, piping hot + well (but not overly) salted. For our visit, at least, the fountain Diet Coke was flat. My youngest son ordered an Oreo Milkshake, also very good. Whipped cream sprinkled with minced Oreos atop the actual shake. Our total was $35.92 for two combos plus a shake. Pro tip- Order your food to go. We attempted to eat on-site...but the bar stools are perched thisclose to a very narrow counter space.

Yelp
Irv's Burgers, located on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, is a must for a tasty burger. We had the Best Burger on "The Menu" and Just For You Burger. Both were spot on delicious. We were a little disappointed in the fries, but overall a great lunch meal. The service was excellent. Kathryn was very courteous and helpful throughout. You can't beat the location. This is an ideal place if you are here on a date, with your family, or on your own. You will definitely enjoy the picturesque location.

Yelp
Service was slow (only 2 workers but not at all complaining), but they were hustling and both were super friendly! That's the reason for 1 of the stars. Second star was for the grilled cheese.... It's part of a kids meal coupon I had. It wasn't too hot so my kiddo could enjoy it right when we sat down across the street. Now the cons, I got 1/2 fries 1/2 tater tot's for the meal... both the tots and the fries were COLD!!! I mean, sitting out for a good 10 min COLD! I know they are known for the burgers so maybe I'll try again but I wasn't impressed AT ALL otherwise.

Yelp
We were looking for a snack while in balboa, and came across Irvs. We didn't try a burger, we thought the pastrami sandwich sounded good! The taste of the pastrami itself was really flavorful! However the price for meat and bread was pretty steep, everything was a la carte if we wanted fries that was an extra $7 so we passed. Cashier was friendly, the cook for some reason took my order handled Cash with his gloves on, then went in the back room, Cashier was now prepping our sandwich and when I turned around the cook was back finishing up our sandwich. I can only hope he changed his gloves when he returned. The shop was tiny, with a few seats but not for a family to sit and enjoy, so we took it to go.

Yelp
Irv's has great tasting food and it's always fresh, since you see them making it right in front of you. But it's just so dang expensive for what you get.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
Overhyped? I came here to try their burgers bc Shay Mitchell gave it a 10/10, so I had to come try it myself. The queen usually has good tastes, but I left a tad bit disappointed. Maybe it's this location in Newport? (Not sure). I didn't order a turkey burger like she did, but I did get the original double roadside without cheese and an order of chili cheese fries because why not. The burger was good, but not great. It tastes like any typical burger, but at $12?! I hate to say it, but I will be sticking to my prefer in-n-out burgers. The fries were mid; they did not taste fresh (I think they were frozen & then deep fried). It was not memorable. I also came on a random Wednesday afternoon and there was essentially no line, but there was still quite a wait because the food is prep after you place your order. Still took about 20 mins. Seating is limited to maybe a couple ocounter seats, so I feel like most people order online and pick up, but if you happen to snag a seat, you do get a view of the balboa fun zone. The location is not ideal and/or convenient if you're not from the area, so I won't be going out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
Cute and located right near the water! Def difficult to get seating bc there's only a few seats by the window inside. We ordered the a double irv's original roadside, best burger on "the menu", patty melt, and cheese fries. There wasn't much that stood out to me with irv's original roadside and the best burger on "the menu", so these were pretty pricey imo. The patty melt was all of our favs and the rye was so good,, really good match with the rest of the ingredients. The cheese fries were just fries and melted american cheese, but the fries themselves were good texture. Our favorite part was probably the big ketchup cups LOL,, I probably wouldn't come back but it was a good try
google avatar

Roberto B.

Yelp
The service was quick and friendly! The ambiance, it's a small location with limited seats, but they make it work. Take your food and walk to the beach for the perfect meal. Get the famous burger and chili cheese fries you won't regret it. So much flavor in every bite and the fries are thin and crispy perfect to withstand the chili.
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
If you're on the hunt for an epic burger, look no further than Irv's Best Burger on "The Menu". At $10.50, this is no ordinary burger....it's a double 4oz patty masterpiece. Each patty is pressed to order, so it's got that perfect balance of crispy, caramelized edges on the outside with a juicy, flavorful inside. The American cheese melts over it like a dream, blending with the grilled onions and Irv's sauce in every bite. Add a little tang from the pickles and a soft, toasted sesame bun to hold it all together, and you've got yourself a burger that'll have you savoring every bite. Pair that with their Orange Creamsicle, a mix of fizzy orange soda and smooth vanilla soft serve, and you've got the ultimate treat. It's creamy, refreshing, and the perfect complement to the savory burger. In short, Irv's knows how to deliver the goods...... totally excellent, dude. Party on.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Best Burger on "The Menu" $10.50. Very delicious and tasty burger. Piping hot and crispy meat. Melty cheese. Tater tots is crispy and hot. Not a lot of seatings very bar seating. There are lots of outside seating. Orange creamsicle is really good. Not enough orange soda if you're thirsty.
google avatar

Yelp
Best spot by the beach and Balboa Fun Zone! Grab a burger and a shake. Free shake with review. Bonus!
google avatar

Madeleine L.

Yelp
Solid burger place and a good stop if you have just gotten off a whale watching or similar boat outing. Tasty, decently quick service. Drawback is very limited seating. If it is cold or windy outside, it can be rough to find a spot.
google avatar

Doug P.

Yelp
Added hatch green chili to the Best Burger. Excellent burger. I would definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
2.5/5 $36 for eh food Wouldn't come back cuz there's cheaper for better lol Cheeseburger combo with onion rings The bun was very fluffy, tasted like a different version of in n out, but more expensive. It was filling because it was heavy from the bun and cheese. Patty melt Felt kinda dry .. I normally really enjoy patty melts, but this was whatever. Onion rings Small portion and burnt lol this was like a kid's portion, if that. Service Took about 15-20 min for a weekday lunch.
google avatar

Angie O.

Yelp
Great food great views !!! Always come here for the chili cheese fries that are BOMB !
google avatar

Vincent H.

Yelp
This place rocks my socks everytime with there bomb thick shakesssssss. I love the burgers too

Yelp
Don't be cheated by the 5-star reviews. I walked 3 miles to the newly opened Irv's to try their famous roadside burgers. Well, it was a good workout, to walk. Compare the advertised burger and the actual one. The burger is "junior sized". The fries were not-at-all crispy. Price is fair. $20 and more (plus tips) for the combo and a soda. Three stars is fair too.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
Excellent new location! Service was super friendly and our burgers and fries were delicious! Price is portions are fair and the flavors were spot on. Great new addition to the area, highly recommended!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
There was a pop-up experience at Irv's Burgers today, in which free meals were generously handed out. I was among the fortunate few recipients able to receive one of these coveted meals. The burger was meant to enjoy on the beach, and the fries were delicious, made with natural potatoes. I recommend stopping by to enjoy some simple, classic favorites.
google avatar

Brenda P.

Yelp
I was super excited to try a new burger joint. I didn't even know this place existed until my friend said there was a location in LA they tried and was pretty good. There are about 7 barstools to sit at inside so don't plan to come in a big group to dine in. However, the beach is right outside so you can totally make this a picnic type lunch or dinner. Parking is pretty limited, there is valet around the corner. Our cashier was could've been in better spirits to be honest. Thank goodness the line wasn't long. I came in with such a huge appetite. We ordered the Best Burger on the Menu with double patties, an order of chili cheese fries, and a soda. Altogether it came to $26 with tip. A little steep in my opinion. The burger was rather small, sadly. I was hoping it would have some sort of dressing as well. It did have large amounts of ooey gooey cheese though, that made up for it. The patties seemed like smash style, tasty but tiny. I could've had my own burger... The chili cheese fries were the star of the show though. I haven't had some good chili like that in a while. I could've scarfed down another order. Fries were nice and crisp too.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
This is the 1950s burger joint you would expect in a throwback roadside stand. The burger party was smashed and crispy around the edges, the hotdog was grilled perfectly, the onion rings seemed hand dipped. Great flavors and quality. We'd go back again and again.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Fun fact you might already know - this place created the burger from the movie, The Menu. And that's exactly what I ordered. Mind you, I'm usually a single shack burger or a a single patty protein style type of person, so this huge burger was out of my comfort zone. Or maybe it wasn't because I devoured the entire thing. It was SO meaty due to the double patty but the flavor was really good. I probably wouldn't order this again but I'm glad I tried it and I would come back for the fries. The fries were really great, texture resembles "well done" at in n out, but taste is not the same. Tastes extra premium. It's super small inside, maybe 6 bar seats at most.
google avatar

Chanel Y.

Yelp
We went to get on the ferry and the burgers smelled so good! I knew we'd have to stop here on our way back and I'm glad we did! Burgers were exactly what you want-greasy delicious flavor in every bite. We also got fries which are good! Probably seasoned with lawrys or something like that, and a side of ranch. Best ranch I've had in a long time, actually! Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Anthony A.

Yelp
Irv's is okay. Not bad but not great. Service is decent. They weren't super busy when I was here but based on where they are, it definitely seems like a place that could be super busy during the touristy times of the year. Not much seating inside, but there's a good amount of seating in the area by the arcade nearby. The burgers itself were kinda greasy, which is kind of a buzzkill for me. The fries were and seasoned a lot
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Bland greasy burger and fries that don't taste stale despite being cooked fresh is quite a trick.
google avatar

Dean S.

Yelp
Another one of my 'foodie moments' where we were in the Balboa Beach for a day of just wandering as we've never been here. I wanted to put my feet in the sand and grab some lunch from a place I've never been but was kind of dumbfounded as we walked by this store and I had another moment of, "hey I know this place!?" So stopped in my tracks as my family continued walking down the pathway. The corner storefront is so recognizable. The designs and colors standout rather well. I turn, walk in and this store in tiny but very quaint. Not a lot of room but being able to stand and watch the cook make your burger is just something g you don't get to see anymore. I appreciate this and enjoy every minute of my time standing here. But back to walking in, I simply ask, "Is this the store that the YouTuber converted to make his stance on another corp store?". The nice young lady behind the counter says, "Yep, and I worked that day!" We chatted about this and how I loved the idea of putting it to money hungry corporate behemoth. So ordered a cheeseburger and we continued to chat about the store. Burger came out fast(and hot) and to be honest. One of the best burgers I've had in a long time from a restaurant. Even the lovely Mrs had a few bites and she rarely eats burgers. I don't remember the guy who called the YouTuber back but kudos to him for letting this happen. If we ever get back to Balboa area, I am for sure heading back to this burger joint.
google avatar

Angel R.

Yelp
We ordered from postmates so we could try their breakfast option. I got turkey with hatch chile and I've never tried hatch chile but yeah it was so absolutely delicious! One time we went to get early dinner after work, around 5pm, and burgers and sandwiches were perfect. Every time I've gone it's great food, speedy service. Very limited seating. You're lucky if you get one of the five seats inside, other than that just go outside and sit on one of the patio tables.
google avatar

Ly N.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place & decided to check it out because my friend told me they are famous in West Hollywood. Great tasty smashed burger! I devoured the whole thing in 30seconds. So yummy
google avatar

Young Jean L.

Yelp
We had onion rings and French fries with the burger and ever was so fresh!! Great quick bite before riding the boat!
google avatar

EL Y.

Yelp
Great burgers & fries onion rings! Made all fresh and the owner is so kind. My son loved it!
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
We have now been to two locations, Newport Brach and Malibu. The Malibu location is larger with better seating and quicker service but the food was great at both locations. Newport Beach was out of tater tot's which was sad because they are so good.
google avatar

Henry T.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. Generally I'm typically skeptical about touristy food spots. I always have the idea that it's not going to be good and is overpriced. So we were wandering around Newport beach and were getting hungry, craving something greasy. Stopped by here and had the double cheeseburger/Irv's double. The burger itself was really tasty. Sauce was good, and the burger had a slight char you don't get on other fast food places like In n out. Tater tots were crunchy. And had this old school ambiance. Kind of small inside but they cook the burgers/hotdogs out in front of you. Can see everything that's going on. Overall pretty happy. Price however was higher than I would want, about $11 for the burger. But I get it. You're paying for location and inflation has made everything more expensive. This is a good place to treat myself every once in a while.
google avatar

Alvin N.

Yelp
"A Classic Burger Gem Now in Newport!" So happy to see Irv's Burgers make its way down to Newport! I've always loved the original vibe, and this new location keeps all the charm, flavor, and heart that made it famous in LA -- with a laid-back coastal twist. I ordered the classic roadside and tots and it hit the spot. The burger was juicy, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the toppings were fresh and crisp. The tater tot's were golden, crunchy, and addictive -- definitely get a side! Whether you're grabbing lunch after a surf session or stopping by for a casual bite with friends, Irv's in Newport delivers. Great food, warm vibes, and a true local gem in the making. We'll definitely be the one!
google avatar

Ty M.

Yelp
Irvs is the best! Great staff, great affordable food and just an overall great atmosphere being right on the board walk of the fun zone. Super friendly staff and just a really cool and diverse menu. Definitely check them out!
google avatar

Ivan S.

Yelp
WRONG HOURS. I drove 30min out of my way to make it here to Irvs well before 10pm (their posted hours)...only to be turned away "we close at 9pm. I am SO sick of restaurants having wrong hours on Yelp/maps/website - something SO simple and SO basic...I don't understand how's it's even possible. Anyway you lost a customer for life, I'll never come back again for having my time wasted so badly.
google avatar

Ivi K.

Yelp
Came here to get a burger to-go for my husband. The line had a few people but moved fairly quickly. The cashier/server was very polite and friendly. The place itself is very small and has some seating but very limited on space and seating. It seems as though most people take their food to-go anyways. I got my husband the best burger (don't remember the exact name). He said it was really good. I just didn't really like that it did NOT travel well. It looked smushed and like the cheese had gotten everywhere even though I carried it VERY carefully. I was kinda disappointed in the appearance/presentation but my husband swore it didn't take away anything from the flavor of it. I still wish it could've traveled a bit better, maybe if it had been wrapped a little better or differently? I'm not sure. But for a $12 burger I was hoping for better presentation.
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
We came over on the ferry and wanted a yummy dinner. We weren't sure if we wanted upscale or quick casual. We went for quick and so happy we did. Small location- few chairs to dine- mostly take out. Smells delicious. Ordered pretty classic burgers and onion rings. They were hot and delicious. Good size too. Onion rings were perfect. The guy that helped us seems like a regular. Very friendly! He was training someone else, so I assume that's why it took a bit longer, but nothing frustrating. Spoke to another person ordering and she said it's her favorite spot. Will be back.
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
Awesome burger. Great addition to the peninsula. Had the original Irvs which was a generous size. Patty was delicious!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Nothing beats a smash burger at the beach. Irv's is a recent addition to the iconic Balboa area, right beside the Fun Zone and ferris wheel. We've been hearing a lot of hype about this place and it didn't disappoint. We got the "best burger" and Irv's original roadside burger along with chili cheese fries. Both were incredible and everything you could want in a solid burger. The smash patty has crispy edges like it should and all the ingredients felt fresh. You know it's quality when you don't feel like crap after a meal. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, the best service! This will be a staple for us in the upcoming summer months. See you guys again sooooon!
google avatar

Nikki I.

Yelp
Normally love Irvs and always excited to get it. Tonight however was a huge disappointment. Delivery arrived over 40 mins past what Postmates said it would and makes sense bc the driver let us know there was only one employee working while he was waiting to pick up our food. Upon delivery we were missing my burger, onion rings and a shake. If you're going to only have one employee scheduled you probably shouldn't have delivery service going since that employee clearly couldn't handle it. Food was also beyond cold and we don't live far. Very disappointed in this especially for the prices charged.
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Irv's and they're certainly come a long way since the West Hollywood days. We've eaten her a dozen or so times since they first opened this past summer and generally, I'd rate Irv's a top-5 burger in the area. The Fun Zone location is tiny so it's difficult to get things done for the staff during peak and summer. That's understandable. I've gotten two error orders from Irv's in the past but it's not a deal breaker. They just forgot to do x and y. The best burger on the menu is, phenomenal. The meat is perfect, cheese, sauce and the sesame bun is epic. It's heavy so go for 1 patty unless you want to nap after. The dogs are great, chili cheese fries are amazing; the fries in general are actually excellent. Perfect shoestring size and perfectly fried. They get a 10/10 for fries. I'm impartial to TK as the local OG burger spot as they make a mean burger that always hits the spot. We've got newcomers now, from Matty Patty's (which appears to be in full blown disaster imploding mode as we speak) to Swagyu (no idea what that guy is doing). But Irv's is a contender. They make a solid solid burger. That's all you need to know. I just hope they can organize a bit more during busy season as it's annoying to get home and see that your chili isn't on your chili dog :/
google avatar

Gogo A.

Yelp
Was in the mood for a burger and saw that this place had good reviews. I had an original smash burger double with chili cheese fries. Not bad. Somewhat typical smash burger joint but it hit the spot.
google avatar

Denise H.

Yelp
Service is friendly and food is prepared quickly. I love how the burger patties have crispy edges and the burger buns are perfectly toasted. Milkshakes are thick and tasty. French fries come out piping hot. I wish they offered better/bigger napkins. This is a super fun location. You can have a burger before or after enjoying the Balboa Fun Zone!
google avatar

Dedrick L.

Yelp
Messy burger, but delicious. Smash patties have a nice crisp without being too thin. Cheese was a bit heavy.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
My favorite burger in Newport now. Ordered to-go, ate our food 20-25 minutes after being made and it was still delicious. The only downfall of this location is their inability to efficiently handle multiple guests at once. Their "kitchen" is very small with only one grill. It can take 30-60 minutes to get a few burgers if you get happen to be there during a rush.

Armineh S.

Yelp
They have delicious shakes and food! Love coming here! The Oreo shake is the best. Service isnamazin
google avatar

Kierstyn A.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I wanted to dine in, but the cashier told us they were closing soon and insisted we order to-go. We got there at 8pm and they closed at 9pm, which would have given us ample time to eat our meal there. That interaction left me a bad taste in my mouth from the start. I was also really excited to try this place, but I was extremely underwhelmed with my burger. My burger was very greasy, soggy, and falling apart. Besides the burger, their fries were crispy and tasty, and their Oreo milkshake was yummy.
