Yelp
Was visiting Tallahassee for work, (love the city by the way). Yelp identified this place as the highest rated pizzeria, so I grabbed a Spin scooter and headed that way. When I was in college at UF, we had a 5 Star Pizza that delivered 24 hours and was $5 a pie. At that time in my life there was nothing more I could ask for, but we have moved on to bigger and better things. Not sure if the 5 Star in Tallahassee is affiliated, but based on their ratings, they might be.
Back on task, Isabella's was empty on a Thursday at 8:00 pm. Not usually a good sign, but I put my faith in my fellow Yelper's and their reviews, to my surprise, especially Kara B. who always has reliable reviews back home in FTL.
On Thursdays, they have buy one get one on their drafts. They let me split them up and try the Proof 850 and the Proof Mango Wit. Both were very good, but the 850 actually had a little more citrusy flavor and a higher ABV. Both served in a plastic, but were still ice cold.
Now to the real test, the pies. I ordered the Salisiccia E Ricotta. So friggin good. Thin, with a slight char from the unique wood fired pizza oven that flash cooked my pizza at 900 degrees. I saw some reviews complaining about burnt pizza, but the accompanying pictures showed a perfectly cooked pizza. If a coal or wood fired pizza doesn't have a little char and a little crisp, it is not done right! As far as the selection, the ricotta cheese was a perfect accompaniment to the bold flavor of the Italian sausage. Really excellent.
Many of the menu pictures on Yelp are old. They now offer 10", 13" (traditional size), and a 16". I ordered the 13" for just myself and it was too much to finish, even though I wanted to.
I was hoping to try the gelato but apparently the flavors vary and the vanilla or pineapple/coconut didn't interest me so I passed.
Next time I'm in Tally, I will be sure to repeat. PS - by the times I finished my meal the place was half full. Maybe I just got lucky with my timing. Truly nice service and delicious meal. I highly recommend Isabella's for an excellent pie and cold beers.
